Oscar-nominated actor Ryan O’Neal, who came to prominence on TV’s “Peyton Place” and became a top star of the 1970s in films including “Love Story,” “What’s Up, Doc?,” “Paper Moon” and “Barry Lyndon,” died Friday, his son Patrick said on Instagram. He was 82.
O’Neal was diagnosed with chronic leukemia in 2001 and with prostate cancer in 2012.
“Ryan was a very generous man who has always been there to help his loved ones for decade upon decade,” his son wrote. “My dad was 82, and lived a kick ass life. I hope the first thing he brags about in Heaven is how he sparred 2 rounds with Joe Frazier in 1966, on national TV, with Muhammad Ali doing the commentary, and went toe to toe with Smokin’ Joe.”
In later years, O’Neal’s acting work often took a backseat to media coverage on his personal travails, involving his combative relationship with longtime companion Farrah Fawcett,...

Watch Tina Turner Flip the Rock Script and Usher in the Seventies With ‘Proud Mary’ on ‘Ed Sullivan’
It was all happening for Tina and Ike Turner in 1970. They’d spent the Sixties building a steady head of steam in the U.S., and especially abroad, with hits like “So Fine,” and their rendition of Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” Their biggest smash wouldn’t come until 1971 — though Tina and Ike were already teasing it at the start of the new decade on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought the worldwide concert industry to a near-complete standstill, but it didn’t stop Guns N’ Roses from heading down to Mexico City on Saturday night to headline the Vive Latino music festival. Organizers of the show were harshly criticized for carrying on, and while several acts dropped out, Guns N’ Roses were not among them.
The band played a slightly truncated version of their standard set, but it did contain the first rendition of “So Fine” since the Use Your Illusion tour in 1993. Duff McKagan,...

Duff McKagan doesn’t consider himself much of an activist. “I give to charity,” he says, “but I do it in a silent way that I think is righteous.” Lately, he’s starting to feel more comfortable talking openly about how he makes a difference in the world.

So that's Milo's endgame? Robot children for childless couples? How lame is that?
This was a huge letdown at the beginning of Humans Season 2 Episode 6. I was really expecting something Much more sinister than that.
Granted, it's really creepy to see robot kids, but the whole deal makes Zero sense.
This is just a way for Milo to string consumers along, taking advantage of their grief to sign them up for a constantly upgraded robo kid every year.
So it's basically an IPhone with a face. Weak.
Dr. Morrow: You didn't tell me when you hired me you wanted to create conscious children. That's the plan, right? What you're doing, and what I'm doing. They're not unconnected.
Milo: No, they're not unconnected.
Dr. Morrow: You didn't think I'd have ethical concerns? Synth children aren't the solution.

George Harrison became the first former Beatle to have a solo No. 1 when he released “My Sweet Lord” in 1970. Though slightly marred by a copyright lawsuit — he was found guilty of “subconsciously plagiarizing” the Chiffon’s 1963 hit “He’s So Fine”— the rock hallelujah included on his majestic triple album All Things Must Pass went on to become Harrison’s signature song.
By 2000 Harrison’s strength was fading due to his battle with lung cancer, but he threw what remaining energy he had into supervising an elaborate 30th anniversary edition of his breakout album. “To create something extra for the Anniversary issue,...

Update: Axl Rose has canceled his planned appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "Due to unforeseen circumstances, unfortunately Axl is no longer scheduled to be on Kimmel," a source for the show told Rolling Stone.
After months of rumors, mysterious teases, subtle, but telling, website updates and other evidence, Axl Rose will appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live next week to address the talk about the classic Guns N' Roses lineup getting back together. Multiple sources confirmed Rose's Kimmel appearance to Rolling Stone, but declined to reveal the specific nature of his announcement or taping date.

Previously: Review: 'Doctor Who' Season 9 Episode 1, 'The Magician's Apprentice,' Lives Every Day Like It's The Last Oh Missy, You're So Fine Clara and Missy aren't dead, obviously, and Missy explains it all in a glorious technobabble flashback to the Doctor escaping invisible androids and falling into a nest of vampire monkeys. This would sound self-consciously wacky coming from anyone else, but Michelle Gomez is so naturally bonkers that it sounds completely plausible. She's in fine form here, whittling a pointy stick like Missy the Vampire Monkey Slayer, in the hopes that she can get her Katniss Everdeen on and go hunting. Clara and Missy’s interactions are perfect -- Clara shifts from her automatic state of "dealing with an erratic Time Lord" to remembering how much she hates Missy. And Missy, despite happily using the Doctor's companion as a human shield, clearly loves having someone to riff off.

As I mentioned in its introduction, my Steely Dan appreciation last week stemmed from an email exchange with several other people. And my article was not the last word by a long shot. One of the participants, Tony Alterman, is responding with his own album-by-album review, and his brother, CultureCatch's own Ian Alterman, is pitching in with his own observations. Here, with punctuation corrected and tangents omitted, is the origin of the debate and its continuation.
Tony Alterman:
Katy Lied -- Probably [Steely Dan's] fourth-best album, after Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and Royal Scam, in that order. Of course, fourth-best for Steely Dan is a bit like Beethoven's fourth-best symphony -- shades of difference here.
Ian:
Re: Steely Dan, it might be heresy, but I think Royal Scam is better than Aja. So my order would be Royal Scam, Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and then...well...it wouldn’t be Katy Lied.

Say it ain’t so, Mindy Project!
Last week’s double header of Mindy was all about secretly kissing one Danny Castellano – complete with a Bridget Jones-worthy ending that made everybody swoon. And last night, things seemed to be moving along right on schedule with our 2014 Mr. Darcy. A happy Mindy announced via voiceover that Danny was sleeping at her place and that dating a co-worker? It kind of ruled.

Child radio star of the 1940s and 50s best remembered for playing Richmal Crompton's Just William
David Spenser, who has died aged 79, was the pre-eminent child radio star of the 1940s and 50s and will be best remembered for his portrayal on air of Just William. The author Richmal Crompton cast him in the role, in a series of dramatisations of her novels about the raucous but endearing 11-year-old outlaw.
This was in 1948, when David turned 14 and was already a seasoned radio actor – performing more than one play a week, he once told me. He had come into acting through a ruse set up by his ambitious mother and a BBC friend: he was lured into Broadcasting House and found himself in a studio being auditioned by the Children's Hour producer Josephine Plummer. For playing the lead in Just William he received the standard juvenile fee of four guineas...

Following up his critical and box-office hit Bridesmaids, director Paul Feig has returned with another comedy, which despite the gender of said director, many have referred to again as a ‘female comedy’. Penned by debut feature writer Katie Dippold, and led by Sandra Bullock and Feig’s breakout Bridesmaids star, Melissa McCarthy, the humour in the film is certainly driven by that trio of very talented comedic women. But we don’t call The Hangover, for example, a ‘male comedy’, and if we’re approaching a point where we won’t define female-driven comedy by gender any more, it will be precisely because of movies like Bridesmaids and The Heat. And in that case, we’re going to need a more apt descriptor for them. So fine, call The Heat a ‘female comedy’ for now if we must, but let’s make sure we push that other f-word to the fore.

The shoot may have been long and at times unpredictable, but it looks like Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx got on just fine making "Django Unchained." So fine in fact, they want to work together again, although this time with characters on the same side. Warner Bros’ has snapped up the rights to Craig Zahler's forthcoming novel "Mean Business On North Ganson Street," as a vehicle to re-team Calvin Candie and Django. And the material sounds pretty good. Should it all come together, DiCaprio would play a detective who believes that his wife is actually a hooker, and disappeared on him with the money she made in her line of work. After an incident in the squad room gets him assigned to the crime ridden Victory, Missouri, he teams with a hot-headed detective (Foxx) with his own troubles after being demoted for brutalizing a suspect, and the pair try to...

Saxophonist David S. (Spencer) Ware was a towering presence on the New York free jazz scene, an artist of compelling gravity and musical intensity. Even after health problems that culminated in a 2009 kidney transplant, he came back strong, his post-operation return coming in a completely solo concert that was a strong statement. This year, the kidney problems returned, and he passed away last night after being hospitalized.
As I once wrote here, Ware united two strands of free jazz: the powerfully full-toned tenor sax blower, and the intellectual craftsman. Although Ware was classified as a free jazz player, he was mentored by Sonny Rollins (who among other things taught him circular breathing), and Ware's music looked back to some earlier jazz styles, though almost always in a fully assimilated way that had no revivalism about it.
Ware started playing around age 11. Oddly, while he played alto and baritone saxes plus bass in school,...

Apparently the Upper East Side fell off is axis on Valentine's Day.
Avery single Serena pined for a Blair-obsessed Dan, who kissed Blair, while Chuck, in all his St. Jude's glory (scarf! bow tie!), made moves to bring down the mop-haired Brooklynite, who let's face it, is nowhere in his league.
Charlie and Lola had a run-in with an oblivious Nate not putting the pieces together and Georgina continues to ruin everything for yet another week while her adorable husband cheers her on from the evil sidelines.
Whew. At least the fashion was on point.
Yes! The return of Blair's pretty hair! Pulled back in a loose braid, (Rapunzel reference?) and paired with a lilac and tweed number, B was feeling the love. Although the tweed vest was debatable, the look overall is an improvement of latter episodes, so we'll take it.

“Source” music in a movie can be dicey. This is music that plays within the movie in such a way that we understand the characters in the scene can hear it, rather than music that plays over the film solely for our benefit. American Graffiti wasn’t the first movie to use source music effectively by any means, but perhaps no film before or since has used it as well. If for some reason you’re part of the 67% of Flickcharters who shamefully have not seen the movie, the premise is simple enough: four teenage friends spend the last night of Summer, 1962 together. The whole film spans that one night, from sundown to sunup. The various characters split off and reunite throughout the film, their individual and collective stories told across Modesto, California.
Anchoring the vignettes is the film’s soundtrack. In fact, because the licensing costs for the original recordings were so high,...

This week, the Earth shook. Literally. And Literally, as rumor began spreading that Hollywood Megacouple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith were splitting up. Their camp denied the claim, while other rumors are saying that it was singing sensation Marc Anthony who got between the two. Which is especially easy when you realize that he is a skeleton who can pretty much get in between anything. I took the news like an alien getting punched in the face. How could the one Hollywood couple who actually appeared to be so much in love (not to mention BFFs with the only other super in love couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes) Break Up? Well according to the Smith Camp, things are fine. So fine, in fact, that they’ve hired a legal team to get to the root of this split rumor. But no need to sue us, W&J, because we...

So Phaedra went for the throat tonight on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, but Kim was not the dumb blonde Phaedra presumed her to be.
While Cynthia was prepping her "dinosaur wedding" (you have to love that woman) and Sheree was off buying her eldest daughter $7400 worth of furniture, Phaedra was plotting up coming at Kim the first chance she got for talking about Apollo and her unborn baby. Kandi arrived at Phaedra's house to check up on her, and Phaedra couldn't let Dwight's inaccurate gossip lay to rest. Is it just me or was Phaedra a little too rough on her verbal beatdown on Kim in that scene, especially with Phaedra being a "Christian, southern belle" and all. Phaedra did have some good zingers, namely the whole 'my baby doesn't need a wig' bit, but it didn't help her case to come at Kim the way she did. However,...

Simon Cowell is a big fan of Justin Bieber - he listens to the teen singer's album every night before he goes to bed. The "Baby" hitmaker thrilled TV viewers in the U.K. when he performed on the music mogul's talent show "The X Factor" on Sunday night, November 28.
And Cowell had a bizarre backstage confession to make to Bieber - he relaxes by listening to the Canadian star's music each night. Bieber writes on his Twitter.com blog, "X Factor we had fun. Simon told me he listens to my cd every night before he goes to bed."
And Bieber also praised British women, including "X Factor" judge Cheryl Cole, adding: "London girls, u go hard... Cheryl u looked lovely as usual. So fine."

Time has not worn dull the oddball charms, nor solved the existential riddles of Mickey One. Arthur Penn's much-neglected 1965 film is long overdue for wide reappreciation, which will be a lot easier now that it's out on DVD, presented in a digitized version of a fabulous restored print, one that lends seductive depth and richness to its black-and-white palette. The visual scheme is slyly well-suited to the surreal tilts and spontaneous freak-outs that punctuate the story, paced by saxophonist Stan Getz's improvisations on an imaginative jazz score.
The film remains as curious as ever. Its opening scene establishes a phantasmagorical tone that it rarely departs for long, as a nightclub comic (played by budding heartthrob Warren Beatty, fresh from Lilith and acting his 28-year-old ass off) lights up a cigar in a sauna, sitting fully clothed in foppish finery as a laughing chorus of fat,...

There's so much one can learn from one episode of "Jersey Shore." Ok, hear us out.
They may not have class or common sense or the ability to use complex tools, but they're still people and we can learn something from them.
In fact, they remind us many times of ourselves in our early-twenties - working at the wrong job, dating all the wrong people, drinking way too much, partying until the sun comes up and believing that same sun won't make our skin look like leather in 10 years.
So fine, it's not exactly your life, but there are still plenty of lessons to be learned from the "Jersey Shore" crew.
Here are 10 things we learned from Thursday's Sept. 2 episode:
1.) Friends should tell a friend when their off-again-on-again boyfriend is French kissing two girls at one time in the club. (The whole house)
2.) An anonymous note may seem to solve...

Considered by many to be the greatest electric guitar player of all time, Jimi Hendrix is coming to Rock Band in a big way. The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s classic album, Axis: Bold As Love, along with the new single, “Valleys of Neptune” from the just-released album of the same name, will be added to the Rock Band Music Store next week. Have a look at the complete track list:
“Up From the Skies” “Spanish Castle Magic” + “Wait Until Tomorrow” + “Ain’t No Telling” + “Little Wing” + “If 6 Was 9” + “You Got Me Floatin’” + “Castles Made of Sand” “She’s So Fine” + “One Rainy Wish” + “Little Miss Lover” “Bold As Love” + “Valleys of Neptune”
I can’t help but think of how hard some of these songs will be to play on Expert. Time to get practicing! Of course, all the tracks are the original master recordings. Titles marked with a “+” will...

Have you heard the news -- Robert Pattinson has been robbed! Before we get ahead of ourselves, let'sback up a bit. We just announced the 23rd Annual Kids' Choice Awards, the fun-filled family affair set to air on Saturday, March 27th, hosted by funnyman Kevin James. What we failed to mention is that The Twilight Saga: New Moon star Robert Pattinson was robbed of an orange blimp before the show even began. His buff costar Taylor Lautner is feeling the love along with fellow nominee Zac Efron (17 Again (2009)), Shia Labeouf (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)) and Tyler Perry (Madea Goes to Jail (2009)). Sadly, you will note that Mr. Pattinson is not listed. So fine, he didn't morph into a super cool wolf, he didn't turn back time, he didn't save the world, and he didn’t go to jail. But, come on, doesn't Rob deserve some praise for his brooding...

Question: what's gay about the Winter Olympics?
Answer: traditionally, not that much, which is ironic, because the ancient Greek Olympics, upon which the whole thing is based, were pretty damn gay. Naked male athletes anyone?
Still, there are some signs that things are slowly changing even in the notoriously heterosexual world of Olympic athletics. Here are a few things that might be of particular interest to gay and bisexual male viewers once the 21st Winter Olympics commence this Sunday in Vancouver, Canada:
The Opening Ceremonies
Why is it Gay? Please.
How Gay is it? It's impossible to say, as the performance itself has been a tightly-guarded secret. We do know that it features Vancouver singer Sarah McLachan (founder of the Lilith Fair woman's music festival!), as well as acrobats in harnesses, fiddlers, and tap dancers — and, no doubt, a few surprises.

Why is He Gay? Genetics? Prenatal hormones?...

Sean Paul enters recording booth as captured in the newly-premiered music video for his single "Press It Up". The recording session is then broadcast through a live webcast. As the music is played and more lyrics are bought out, the number of its viewers increases, starting from only 1 to 3,000,000.
"Press It Up" is the second single which comes from Sean Paul's latest studio project "Imperial Blaze". The track is aimed to follow up the album's lead single "So Fine" which has come out since June.
Initially titled "The Next Thing", "Imperial Blaze" peaked at number 12 on Billboard Hot 200 since making its way out in United States on August 18. During an interview, Sean said he had done some duets for the record. In fact, it is only Keri Hilson who lends her vocal to the project. She is featured in the iTunes version of "Hold My Hand".
