NBC cut 6 minutes from this film for its 1986 network television premiere.
One version that has shown up on UK television in the past has most uses of the F word either deleted or dubbed and the one use of the C word in the film has the sound dropped down so the word is inaudible (Mayo mouths the word but we do not hear it). However most showings since the 2000s tend to have the profanities restored as per the theatrical release.
TV versions typically eliminate the pre-credits scenes with young Zack in the Phillipines, after his mother has died and he joins his father.
In the theatrical version of the movie, Gunnery Sergeant Emit Foley declares that the only things to come out of Oklahoma are "steers and queers". In the television version, this was dubbed to "gays and strays".
TV versions change the chants repeated by the group while marching and by Zack marching in place in the mud. The alternate rhymes contain fewer references to ethnicity and sex.
Some of the music in the VHS version has been changed - namely the ZZ Top, Pat Benatar, Dire Straits, and Van Morrison songs.
