The Prank. Those delightful, seemingly harmless little tricks we play on others for a laugh. But tread carefully, for the line between playful jest and horrific disaster is perilously thin. These seven horror movies with pranks gone wrong take the concept of the lighthearted prank and twist it into something lethal. We’re talking about more than just whoopee cushions and fake spiders; these are pranks with consequences so severe they’re measured in screams, not giggles.
From high school gags that end in gorefests to sinister plots with deadly outcomes, each prank horror movie in this list shows how quickly the fun can turn fatal. So, prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of deceit and dread, where the next laugh might be your last, and the punchline is always death.

New month, new recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features random picks as well as selections reflecting the month of March 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s horror offerings include a killer robot, a haunted mini-mart and more.
The Telephone Box (1972)
Pictured: José Luis López Vázquez’s character talks to a boy inside the namesake of The Telephone Box.
Directed by Antonio Mercero.
An obvious rec for International Find a Pay Phone Booth Day (March 10) is La Cabina (a.k.a. The Telephone Box). This Spanish, made-for-tv short-film turns a silly situation into surreal horror. José Luis López Vázquez‘s unfortunate character enters a freshly installed phone booth, only to then learn it neither works nor allows him to leave. As onlookers gather around and fail to help him,...

What’s the scariest creature the world has ever known? If you said the sloth, you’re not alone. Some may find these furry bundles of lethargy charming, but a closer look reveals a devious predator lurking amidst the trees just waiting to attack us with those long, blood-soaked claws. Matthew Goodhue’s Slotherhouse pits this tree-hanging menace with another fearsome fiend: the ambitious sorority girl.
Animal lover Emily (Lisa Ambalavanar) has set her sights on the Presidential Suite of her lavish sorority house as she begins her senior year of college. Unfortunately, this means she’ll have to take down incumbent mean girl Brianna (Sydney Craven) and her team of frightened minions. Hoping to boost her social media cred, Emily adopts a three–toed sloth she names Alpha from a sketchy animal poacher and unwittingly unleashes a blood bath as the tiny assassin slices her way through the Sigma Lambda Theta sisters.

Ah, the '80s! A time of neon leg warmers, cassette tapes, and some of the most gloriously over-the-top horror movie slashers ever to grace the silver screen. While the decade gave us iconic killers like Freddy and Jason, it also birthed a slew of lesser-known but equally thrilling slashers that have been gathering dust in the dark corners of horror history. These hidden gems are brimming with inventive kills, wild plot twists, and enough suspense to make your hair stand on end (and not just because of the hairspray).
So grab your VHS player, pop some popcorn, and let's dive into 10 forgotten and underated slashers of the '80s that still have some stabs left in them!

Mark Rosman‘s The House on Sorority Row (1982) and Stewart Hendler‘s Sorority Row (2009) feel shoved aside in their respective horror classes. Titles like Pieces, Black Christmas, and The Dorm That Dripped Blood get more frequent mentions when discussing pre-90s sorority or dormitory slashers. Remake debates rarely include Sorority Row in their reassessments of unfairly stigmatized 2000s horror revamps based on nostalgia biases (among other reasons). It’s interesting how both seem equally less popular despite their amassed cult followings after meager box office openings.
It’s almost like Hendler attempted to shake the original’s mojo by deeming Sorority Row an adaptation of Rosman’s screenplay Seven Sisters — the earlier iteration of what would become The House on Sorority Row. Don’t mind the trickiness because Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger write their re-imagining indebted to The House on Sorority Row. Maybe late-2000s remake fatigue led to...

It’s kind of a wonder just what might happen if anyone brought Harley Jane Kozak’s name into a conversation during any discussion about one movie or another, especially from the 80s or 90s. That’s about when she was in her prime and was still someone that might be noticed by a great number of people, and if you think back to certain movies such as Side Out, When Harry Met Sally, The House on Sorority Row, and a few others you might get an idea of where you’ve seen her before and what she’s done. With Halloween nearly two weeks away now, we have another great new batch of horror and sci-fi Blu-rays and DVDs coming out this week that genre fans are undoubtedly going to want to add to their home media collections, as they are not only perfect to enjoy for the remainder of October, but pretty much any time of year. The two biggest highlights for me personally are Scream Factory’s absolutely stunning Steelbook editions of Halloween II (1981) and Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Kino Lorber has also put together a brilliant Blu-ray presentation of Trilogy of Terror as well.

Before she was one of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or ruling daytime soaps on The Young and the Restless and Days of our Lives, Eileen Davidson starred as a sexy sorority sister with a sinister secret. Of all the many sub-genres in horror, the slasher is probably my favorite. There aren’t many good ones, but even the bad ones tend to deliver exactly what we want from the formula. They’re horror movie comfort food, and Shudder is offering an entire buffet this October.
Black Christmas (1973, dir. Bob Clark) In many ways the first modern slasher film, Bob Clark’s holiday horror movie is, to this day, a genre masterpiece. From its chilly Canadian atmosphere to the disturbing obscene phone calls being made to a sorority house, Black Christmas is brilliantly constructed and hugely influential. It’s not just one of my favorite slasher movies, but one of my favorite horror movies of any type, full stop.

Slasher movies have always flooded the Dtv marketplace as they are quick to make and cheap to produce and ultimately the go to sub-genre for student filmmakers. With this easy access, the vast majority of these films are bound to be either completely unwatchable or so devoid of talent that you end up wondering why you bothered. I’d be lying if I told you Fox Trap breaks new ground or plays outside the box, it doesn’t, but what it does well is emulate the best aspects of past slasher favourites and provides a thriller that will surely please genre fans.
Keeping with tradition, Fox Trap opens with a prologue. It’s prom night and a group of friends prank one of their fellow classmates, naturally the stunt goes horribly wrong. Fast forward eight years later, and the same group of friends have all received invitations to a reunion...

Based upon the 1983 horror The House on Sorority Row, this remake loosely takes the original’s idea of a prank gone horribly wrong and delivers a new take on the moral dilemma among its cast of colourful characters.
So after a prank to get back at a cheating boyfriend of one of the sorority girls goes wrong and she’s accidentally murdered, the other sisters and the boyfriend all vow to keep her death a secret and label it to the authorities as a disappearance.
Eight months later, something or someone is not too pleased with the secret, as they are killing off the group of girls one by one in rather nasty and effective ways. But which one of them is the killer? And have they lost their mind with guilt?

Sorority Row has a lot of things going for it. It’s...

Our Us chums were at the world premiere of Ryan Murphy's crazy, fun new horror comedy series, Scream Queens at Sdcc 2015...
Before the world premiere of the Scream Queens pilot at San Diego Comic-Con, Jamie Lee Curtis emceed the event like it was last call the night before the Navy leaves the Golden Coast, and there was still plenty of partying to do. By the time Curtis had introduced the cast, including Emma Roberts and Lea Michele, and paid her respects to Scream Queens creator Ryan Murphy, the mood in the room was wild, jubilant, and maybe a little nuts. So in many respects, it reflected the tone of the maniacally entertaining television series they were about to watch.

Back in August, Shock first introduced you to the works of Travis Falligant, an artist who introduced the Scooby-Doo gang to a variety of horror movie villains in a series of fun illustrations. He's still at it, recently revealing three new pieces that draw inspiration from My Bloody Valentine, The House on Sorority Row and Maniac Cop 2. Check 'em out in the gallery below along with his previous art.

It’s impossible for me to hide the fact that Scream Factory is one of my favorite boutique media labels. As far as content goes, they give me the type of films that I really want to see on the Blu-ray format. They’ve had a strong first couple of years, and I see no signs of them slowing down anytime soon. Two of the biggest… neigh, The two biggest releases of the 2014 Halloween Seasons is coming from these guys. I’m speaking, of course, about the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed, as well as the Complete Halloween Collection. But you’ve already heard about those, and pre-ordered them, right? Well, here is their entire fall(Sept/Oct… And some November, cause shut up.) lineup, in case a few have slipped by you.

We all know by now that slasher villains just love to kill young, scantily clad babes, which is why sorority houses makes for the absolute perfect playground for those with a penchant for wearing masks and carrying around sharp objects. Not surprisingly, many horror movies over the years have indeed used sorority houses as their settings, from Black Christmas to The House on Sorority Row. The latest addition to the sorority slashers sub-genre is Sorority Party Massacre, which Anchor Bay is putting out on home video early next year.
Directed by Chris W. Freeman and Justin Jones, Sorority Party Massacre centers on the slashings of beautiful sorority babes on an isolated island town, where one girl has gone missing for each of the last 20 years. When a big-city cop and the small town's local sheriff begin to investigate the string of mysterious disappearances, they soon realize they're dealing with a...

The fantastic thing about the VHS years is that the poster art was frequently hand drawn and frequently had very little or nothing to do with the actual film. If you picked a film based solely on the box cover, you had a pretty good chance of being disappointed or at least surprised. Distributors seemed to see a snazzy box cover as a good way to get some mileage out of a subpar film. That still goes on today, but it seems to happen less frequently and the artwork just isn’t the same. In spite of the trickery that duped more than a couple of horror fans in the late ‘70s through the early ‘90s, there are some terrific and legitimate films that have terribly misleading – albeit awesome – cover art. For that reason, we present to you ten more examples of awesomely misleading film artwork.

We frequently disagree with movie critics on their critiques of horror films. It seems that the majority of mainstream critics are not able to accept horror films for what they are intended to do: scare the audience and entertain. Not every horror film is meant to be taken seriously or to make a profound statement and we think that’s ok.
We are left wondering if mainstream film critics dismiss horror films as a lesser art form and perhaps tend to view them as not worth their time. In light of that, FEARnet has been running a recurring a piece exploring good horror movies that received ‘rotten’ reviews on the aggregate film rating site Rotten Tomatoes. Since the series has proved popular, we are bringing you a third installment.

One of the best things about horror film posters is the obligatory tagline. Some of them are catchy and increase your interest in watching the film, others are silly, some are unforgivably campy, and others are outright ridiculous. The best horror film poster blurbs, however, are typically a blend of all the aforementioned components. Many of our favorite taglines are almost a lampoon of themselves, but somehow, that has become part of the magic. It’s almost as if the worse the pun, the better the audience response. The heyday of the outlandish promo blurb was at its height when the slasher film was at its peak, but that’s not to say that contemporary horror cinema hasn’t brought us some dandies. With that in mind, we present to you 20 of our most favorite horror poster taglines from the 1970s to present. House "Horror has found a new home.

Confession time, y'all: I have no idea what the f*ck is going on. This week's American Horror Story: Asylum has had the effect on my wee brain of a Jolt Cola-sponsored 48-hour horror movie marathon held in an operating steel mill. I'm no longer able to discern heroes from villains, the dead from the living, or a fake Boston accent from a real German one.
Asylum, you have finally broken me with these four simple, yet impossibly beautiful, words:
We begin with a bit of background nunsense: two smiling nursing sisters titter about Lilies of the Field as they arrive for their shift through Briarcliff's front doors. I'm half expecting them to punch a clock on the way in as a sheepdog punches himself out. ("Mornin', Sam." "Mornin', Sister.") They arrive in the medical ward, where a very grey, very sweaty Grace (Lizzie Brochere) lies barely conscious under a sheet.

Note: The film I'm about to review is not a remake of the obscure 1986 Klaus Kinski psycho thriller Crawlspace. I feel silly even having to mention this, but Hollywood has remade The House on Sorority Row, The Crazies, and The Toolbox Murders, so I don't even know what qualifies as "obscure" anymore.
If you combine the phrases "Australian," "science fiction," and "horror" into the description of a new movie, I'll be the first guy in line to see it. Attribute my affection for Aussie cinema to childhood screenings of films like Patrick, Razorback, and Mad Max 2 (aka The Road Warrior), but I've always appreciated the indie Aussies' approach to mood, tension, action, and enthusiasm for car chases, fist fights, gun battles, crazy monsters, and violence with an outback attitude. I say all this because the most recent export from Australia's genre department is more or less a disappointment. The...

The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?
Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.

*here be minor spoilers. Director/writer: Justin Russell. Cast: Brittany Belland, Tiffany Arnold, Riana Ballo, John Bloom, Jessica Cameron, Jason Jay Crabtree, and Ali Ferda. There have been many films in the past that involve serial killers and sororities. From Black Christmas (1974) to The House on Sorority Row (1983) and even to The Sorority House Massacre (1986), there are sorority sisters living in fear of a nameless killer. Justin Russell's debut is reminiscent of all of these. However, The Sleeper is most similar to When a Stranger Calls (1979). You just never know were the killer is in these films. That killer brandishes a smallish looking claw hammer. He babbles into his rotary phone of "girls" and "coming to get you." The girls at the sorority house, to whom he is talking, take little interest. There is partying to do after all. Oblivious to his actions, the killer gets closer and closer to the sorority house.

Hence this “rebuttal” – a list of 50 films (in no particular order) that Didn’T make Eslf’s Top 100 that I think are some of the best of the 80s, including some that might surprise you…

There are a few slashers out there that have achieved cult status but fully deserve to be real classics up there with the likes of Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Hey, little piggies! Is everyone ready to pull back the shower curtain on the latest episode of American Horror Story? Careful - there's a big bad Persian Armenian wolf set to blow the house down and an undead housekeeper set to blow - well, I'm getting ahead of myself.
We start the episode, as usual, in a flashback. Constance (Jessica Lange) is crying in front of a crackling fire. Speaking of fire, a pre-burn Larry the Burn Man (Denis O'Hare) walks in and hangs up the phone behind her. She tells him that they're charging her with criminal child neglect or something like that - is she talking about Tate shooting up his school?
She makes an offhand reference to the child in question, noting, "Now you know how he is when he's not supervised" and mentions a name - Carl? Gal? Bowl? Damn you and your Old Dominion whispering,...
