When director Aaron Truss got in touch regarding checking out his latest film, the short Pareidolia, I jumped in feet first with a resounding yes. Why? Well, Truss had produced a great documentary on the VHS era, Cult of VHS, and this short film starred one of my all-time favourite actresses Diane Franklin… a performer whose roles in Better Off Dead, The Last American Virgin and later Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure had, I’m sure, shaped my idea of the perfect girlfriend and whose roles in Summer Girl and Amityville 2 stirred something in my teenage libido too!
For those unfamiliar with the term, Pareidolia is the scientific term for seeing meaningful images in random visual patterns. It’s what the Rorschach inkblot test is based on,...

A day after posting a goofy video for Halloween, Haim have dropped a new song, “Now I’m in It,” accompanied by a video directed by their frequent collaborator, Paul Thomas Anderson.
The clip opens with Danielle Haim sitting in a dimly lit Los Angeles bar in a red leather dress. She takes a shot, exits into the sunlight and rushes to a diner, where she dons an apron and starts sloppily pouring customer’s coffee behind the counter. She runs into a thrift store, leaves with a vintage pink...

When "Country Strong" opens wide in January 2011, Leighton Meester will be seen portraying beauty queen-turned-singer Chiles Stanton. In a recent interview, the Blair Waldorf of "Gossip Girl" reveals that it was the character which first drew her to be a part of the Shana Feste-directed drama.
Asked whether she seeks out a musical, the "Monte Carlo" actress told Just Jared, "No, I mean I initially I fell in love with the character, the script, and the way Shana writes human relationships and interaction." She added, "I loved the character and I felt like I wanted to do her justice, then on top of it Gwyneth Paltrow being involved with it was a huge draw for me."
Recalling the filming experience as "fun", "really different" and "amazing", Leighton detailed how watching live performances in Nashville helped her build Chiles' character. "I did get to go out a couple times, during...

Is Gwyneth Paltrow about to get served? The star of the upcoming "Country Strong" (out Dec. 22) plays a Shania Twain-esque country singer being overshadowed by an up-and-coming Carrie Underwood type (played by "Gossip Girl's" Leighton Meester). And if the actresses are to be judged by their respective first singles off the soundtrack, Meester is the winner in our books.
MTV News has the first clip of Meester's "Summer Girl," a cutesy pop-country jammer espousing the glory of flip-flops, sunshine and not needing boyfriends.
Compared to Paltrow's titular track, which she debuted at the 2010 Cma Awards, we've got to say this round goes to Blair Waldorf.
Judge for yourself:...

A music video featuring Leighton Meester singing "Summer Girl" for "Country Strong" has been premiered. In the clip coming out courtesy of MTV's Hollywood Crush, the "Gossip Girl" beauty gets flirty with co-star Garrett Hedlund when she covers the Jessica Andrews' tune on a small stage.
The video opens with an introduction from the 24-year-old actress, and continues to show her slipping into the shoes of Chiles Stanton and bringing the house down in a white, ruffled mini dress and red boots. Intercepting her performance are footage of her beauty queen-turned-singer character' romance with Garrett's Beau Hutton.
"Summer Girl" isn't the only song Leighton is singing in "Country Strong". Back in November, a clip from the drama movie has given out a preview of her duet with Garrett as they sing Faith Hill's "Give Into Me". Additionally, she has lent her vocal in the film's soundtrack for a song...

Leighton Meester is a summer girl in a music video coming out via MTV from her upcoming movie "Country Strong". The actress who plays beauty queen-turned-singer Chiles Stanton is performing for a bunch of people while scenes from the Gwyneth Paltrow-starring flick are flashing in random.
"Summer Girl" is originally a 2005 song by Jessica Andrews. The revamped version performed by Meester is not listed in the soundtrack album of the movie. Instead, she contributes "Words I Couldn't Say" to the theme songs compilation which went on sale in the U.S. market on October 26.
"Country Strong" itself will not be released in theaters across the country until December 22. It follows a fallen country music singer Kelly Canter (Gwyneth Paltrow) as she embarks on a career resurrection tour with her husband-manager (Tim McGraw) and Stanton.

The 7th annual Atlanta Underground Film Festival is like having four different fests crammed into an exhaustive three days on Aug. 27-29. It’s an outrageous underground fest, an animation festival, a documentary fest and a horror movie festival: The culmination of a month of fests run by Atlanta’s Festival League. There’s tons of short films, documentaries, features and more.
There’s lots of great stuff to recommend, too. On the last night of the fest, there will be a screening of Chris Hansen‘s second feature film, Endings, which tells the touching story of three people spending their last day on Earth together. The film was reviewed on Bad Lit a few months ago. On the short film front, there’s Loretta Hintz‘s wild lesbian bestiality (sort of) tale, The Sheep and the Ranch Hand and two films by the perpetually awesome Neil Ira Needleman, Meeskit...
