Frank Agrama, founder and chairman of Harmony Gold, died on Tuesday. He was 93.
Agrama’s career as an entertainment pioneer saw him founding several production companies including the Film Association of Rome and then Harmony Gold, which launched television series such as “Shaka Zulu” and “Robotech.”
He was born on Jan. 1, 1930, and became a child actor in Egypt with his own TV series. While his father was the Surgeon General of Egypt, Agrama initially followed in his father’s footsteps by acquiring a degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Cairo. By the time he was 23 years old, Agrama was a medical doctor.
Agrama left his medical career to pursue his passion for entertainment production, obtaining a Bachelor of Theater Arts from UCLA. He then moved back to the Middle East in 1964 where he would go on to help establish Lebanon’s movie industry.

Mona Scott-Young had been in the music business as a manager for years when opportunity knocked in the form of a reality TV show about the significant others of hip hop stars.
That was a decade ago. The durable VH1 franchise “Love & Hip Hop” is now the cornerstone of Scott-Young’s Monami Entertainment banner, which has ventured into everything from cosmetics and wine to physical production and post-production assets.
On the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Monami CEO Scott-Young discusses the company’s growth and the building blocks in her professional life that led her to launch Monami in 2008 after leaving the top-tier music management firm Violator. She had wanted to break into television, but hadn’t found the right avenue until the concept for “Love & Hip Hop” came to her from a former protege, manager-producer Yandy Smith, who would later appear on the show.

Killer Joe (Lionsgate) William Friedkin’s film of Tracy Letts’ off-Broadway hit about a family of Texas trailer park cretins (Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon) who hire a cop-cum-hitman (Matthew McConaughey) to take out their troublesome mother, then foolishly cross him, is a stinging satire, given double-barreled audacity by Friedkin’s sure, and fearless, directorial hand. Earning its Nc-17 rating in spades, “Killer Joe” reminds us that daring, frank material like this is why movies exist in the first place. McConaughey gives the performance of his career, hopefully redefined after this. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Commentary by Friendkin; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

For over two years The Camden Stables has been home to London’s premiere African restaurant; Shaka Zulu serves the delicacies of the Dark Continent with live bands, performers and African music to create the authentic African arena to enjoy truly decadent feasts of the exotic kind.
I recently attended the 2nd birthday of Shaka Zulu, which also saw the opening of their Meat Bar. What is a meat bar you ask? It is very much as the name suggests a bar that serves meaty cocktails. If you like your Bloody Mary heavy on the Worchester Sauce then this will be your idea of Heaven. Cocktails with bacon, chorizo and even salmon are on the menu; and if a whole glass of meat fused with tequila or vodka doesn’t rock your boat then there are also shots. In either case I found them too savoury, too heavy for the...

I remember watching “Shaka Zulu” when I was a wee bit lad and really enjoyed it. Then again, I’m a sucker for war epics. I thought we might be getting something similar to that when I heard Orlando Bloom and Djimon Honsou were going to star in a new movie called “Zulu”. Turns out, not so much. But hey, maybe this “Zulu” won’t be so bad, either. “Zulu” has signed up Bloom and Honsou as “two Cape Town police officers who investigate the murder of a 18 year-old girl, the daughter of a member of the championship winning Springboks rugby team. The investigation reveals ties to the country’s apartheid past in the simmering thriller.” French director Jerome Salle, who helmed the thriller “Anthony Zimmer” (which was remade as “The Tourist” with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp), will direct the film from the novel “Zulu” by Caryl Férey. It's being reported that Paramount Pictures is officially developing a new movie with their sister station, Spike TV, based on the network's popular series, Deadliest Warrior. The studio has set Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps Entertainment to handle the project.
In the series, legendary historical warriors face off to see which of them is the best of the best. In the episode, groups of experts representing the two warriors bring many different weapons that were often used in battle, and then complete tests on dummies, pig carcasses, and complex ballistic bodies, complete with skeletal structures, internal organs, and blood. The tests, while often shockingly messy and violent, enable doctors and specialists to study precisely which of the weapons would prevail in a real battle, and then a sophisticated computer program runs one thousand simulated battles using the input they incorporate to determine who the winner would be.

Amy Winehouse's father was rushed to hospital with chest pains. Mitch was taken to see medical staff with chest pains after a holiday in Spain and on Tuesday, August 10, doctors were carrying out a series of tests on him at the London Clinic on Harley Street to discover what is wrong.
"Mitch visited a Spanish doctor and after flying into London he went straight from the airport to the hospital," as source told the Daily Star newspaper. "The whole family have been to visit him and trying to calm him down."
The 59-year-old taxi driver recently released an album "Rush Of Love" but has canceled all of his work and promotional commitments for the LP and his upcoming tour. A spokesman said, "Mitch's manager is now on his way to see him in hospital."

Amy Winehouse and her date Reg Traviss look nice from a distance, don’t they? The couple was out in London last night at a Shaka Zulu launch party (who hasn’t been to one of those, am I right?). But really, Amy is what Cher from Clueless refers to as a “Monet”, nice from a distance, but up close she’s just a big old mess. That’s because Amy was not only rocking the full-on nip-slip pretty much all night long, but she was also doing the oh-so-2006 move of exiting her ride while revealing what lies beneath. We’re thankful she wore underwear, but still, by this point there should be a school for celebrities where they learn how to demurely get out of a car. Check out all the pics in our gallery which is not terribly safe for work. [Photos: Splash News Online/WENN]...

Treating herself to another night on the town, Amy Winehouse joined boyfriend Reg Traviss at the Shaka Zulu launch party in London on Wednesday (August 4).
Showing off her ample cleavage in a low-cut black frock, the "Rehab" singer doted affection onto her latest beau as she gave him a few smooches at the Sables Market soiree.
The outing comes after the troubled singer partied her way into the morning hours the previous night, as she was photographed asleep at a pub table in London at 9.30Am.
Always keeping things interesting, Winehouse is said to have awoken and stumbled across the street towards home - nearly getting clipped by a passing car along the way.

Everyone’s had the “who would win in a fight” discussion, whether you’re speculating about Batman and Spiderman or ninjas versus pirates. Now, the television network Spike looks to settle the score once and for all with Deadliest Warrior. The concept is simple, pick two historical combatants, bring in experts to assess their strengths, weaknesses, weapons, and fighting styles, and then run the results through a computer program to determine the winner.
With matchups like Spartan vs. Ninja, Viking vs. Samurai, and Green Beret vs. Spetsnaz (Russian special forces), the show seeks to pit dissimilar backgrounds and combat styles against each other. It’s apples versus oranges in a hypothetical battle for total domination.
But of course the simplicity of the system is what makes it inherently flawed. Hiding behind the veneer of “science” (the show’s methods are actually conspicuously unscientific) Deadliest Warrior works from some vague archetype...

Ah, Spike TV, the male programming response to Lifetime. All killing, sex, and low-brow humor all the time. If you remember back to when Spike TV first got its start, it had little more in terms of content strategy beyond buying up the rights to the entire James Bond catalogue and broadcasting them 24/7. It may have made the holders of Ian Fleming’s estate ecstatic, but after about a month the channel was in dire need of something new. Gradually the channel began to produce its own content and eventually it got to the point where its unique content was marginally watchable, if you were bored or drunk on a Saturday. Deadliest Warrior represents the current pinnacle of the channel’s programming. It’s that great? No, but it’s perfectly aimed at the testosterone-infused audience thanks to the use of weapons and the wholly ridiculous nature of its concept.

The public face-off between Adobe and Apple just got serious. How serious? Full page Washington Post ads serious. The ads reuse the same material we've seen before...but they're so slick someone is helping Adobe finesse this stuff.
Adobe's campaign includes a two-pronged attack: The first, which is nastily spiky in a sarcastic way, features a straight and simple "We heart Apple" tag, followed by the hook: "What we don't love is anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web." That's a direct, unadorned stab at Apple's closed iPhone development platform.
The other prong of Adobe's attack constitutes an open letter to the world's netizens from Adobe's cofounders and chairmen Chuck Geschke and John Warnock. This explicitly addresses how Adobe embraces open Web thinking, and suggests that Apple's closed platform may be undermining the future of future mobile computing paradigms.
