Typical fun 80s movie
MichaelMovieLoft8 February 1999
This has all the elements of an 80s film: 80s music, 80s fads, sex, and plot. The cast is mainly Canadian and really only two names come to mind (Carl Marotte from Beyond Reality and Carolyn Dunn from Sweating Bullets). There are some good shots of some Canadian scenery, and some of the humor is pretty good. If you ever see this film advertised on a local station or on USA (known for showing B-movies), give it a try.

80's parody of the 80's
rlcsljo11 April 2001
Hey, you did not have to wait for the 80's to be over to realize how ridiculous most of it was--except that it ushered in the death of disco. The producers of this movie did a great job of lampooning (and I mean poon!) the vacuousness of that meaningless decade. In the mean time they did a pretty good job of doing a teen coming of age film that equally involved boys and girls.

My favorite part of this film was the up the skirt and skirt hike up shots.

Don't get me wrong though, this is not great film making.

Filming locale
l2488625 August 2009
My brother and I were extras in this movie when it was filmed in 1984. I have a cousin, Andrea Kenyon, who is a casting director. She's on IMDb if you look her up. She got us in when we were visiting that summer.

For the person who was wondering, the amusement park is La Ronde in Montreal. It is still going strong today. It is on Ile St. Helene, a small island between the island of Montreal and the mainland. The island was originally the site of Expo '67 which Montreal hosted.

The movie was originally going to be called 'Fun Park'. I still have yet to see it! Maybe that's for the better?! If anyone knows where I can find it, please let me know.

Junk with some sentimental value....
cintitatorres18 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The first time I saw this movie I was 7 !, I never saw any boobs in TV before so I was kinda shocked, but I thought it was such a cool movie, I loved the chick with the funny hair and the cheeky panties, everything seemed perfect, until today... I watched it again, lol, such a lovely piece of junk, it brings me so many memories though, the acting is awful, starting from the cocky main character who barely convinces me..., the nerdy kid and the bad guy... awful !, the blonde chick it's awesome, still the best character in this movie.

The plot... ridiculous ! why would anyone put a diamond that worth millions inside a freaking stuffed animal lol x 1000. I honestly remember that even then, back in the 80's I thought it was the dumbest idea ever...

The soundtrack... some good stuff, but sometimes all the sudden you can come across to some out-of-place music that has nothing to do with the scene itself, I enjoyed it when I was 7.... not so much now.... that explains most of this review.

A real cool movie!
gwynne410083 April 2005
I loved this movie when I was younger. I haven't seen it in years, but would love to see it again. I was hoping it would come out on DVD. I loved Carolyn Dunn and her cool hair! And the lead guys were so hot especially Thor Bishopric. Anyone who lives for amusement parks and craves that one last day of freedom before school starts should check this movie out. I have never seen any of the actors in other movies so I don't know if anyone else knows who they are, but the acting was fairly good for such a low budget movie. I didn't like the so-called bad guys in the film, but they did add some comic relief. I also liked the final scene when they played the classic 80's hit "Let the Music Play" by Shannon.

Breaking the not viewing rule
videorama-759-85939118 September 2017
You could just pass this off, as another 80's teen T and A Porky's type movie of straight to video status, but boy, you're in for surprise, if you give this one a chance. The movie, not badly made, mind you, is a lot of fun, like the fun park, our young good looking foursome end up at. Truth: part of the film's magic, rests in the head actor's shoes, that of Carl Marrotte as Jack. He has such great, winning personality and irresistible charm, you'd almost want to meet the real actor in a person, or watch him in other movies. Working as a cleaner at a local amusement park, with no time to sleep and one more day of freedom, before high school kicks back in (God, how times have changed where teens were played by older looking actors) he coaxes his best friend to come with him, yeah, back to the amusement park, where on the way, they fall for two hotties, first not really matching. They do a preferred swap, a roller coaster ride/feeling up scene, earlier on in the peace you could say it's titilating, if one sided. Prior, these three, well two, if you want to get more technical, brainless dolts, thieves rip off a diamond, where the other one of higher IQ, but still really pathetic, stashes the diamond, in one of these teddy bears, which Jack's friend David wins it after having a game, with his new found love. Even the thieving characters are so much fun, larger than life buffoons, who prove no much for our young likable four, who you actually get to know and really care. Another hit, is the title song. BTR is one of those overlooked films, a jewel in the rough, if you pardon the pun. Both girls are such cuties, Angie, the cuter one, even offers us an open CU t and A shot, as she frankly checks herself out. You question was that image really necessary? I think "Yes". Fun from start to finish, a cute little, sexy dream, sequence of better days for Jack, opens the film. One qualm. Why didn't the thieves just run off later with the diamond while taking refuge in one the stars, instead of hiding it inside the t.v? Well, we wouldn't have a movie, or such a fun and entertaining film that exists, back in ol' 85.

Typical New World Pictures flick from the 80's but a classic
the93man25 July 2002
I love New World Pictures movies from the 80's,but this is one of my favorites. It's about two guys, one is a wisecracking schemer and one is a mild virgin.Together they meet a couple of valley girls who want to shed their image by dressing new wave 80's.They meet a fun park and spend the day trying to get to know eachother until at night they run into a trio of bumbling jewel thieves looking for the teddy bear with the stolen jewel in it.The main girl Debbie is played by the beautiful and talented Carolyn Dunn,of the Sweating Bullets fame. Her "I Love You"underwear is cute.My other personal New World faves are"Crimes of Passion","Girls Just Want to Have Fun","Night Patrol","Tuff Turf" and many more, but this is one too,it should of been New World's break out hit when first released in 1985 but unfortunately it was'nt due to its ansemble cast of canadian actors.Anyways "Breaking All The Rules"should get more recognition on DVD,its a classic 80's parody and funny.9 out of 10.

Great 80's fun!
nick-2964 September 1999
I saw this movie 13 years ago and ever since it has had very sentimental value to me.

Apart from a quite nicely planned plot, with everything falling nicely into place, if you are a fellow 80's fanatic, this movie has got to appeal to you. The fashion throughout the movie is unmistakably 80's! Especially Debbie!

The small romantic element is so endearing, with a little bit of suspense and quite a few funny moments throughout the movie, make this really a fun movie to watch, with the nostalgia of it all, you just have to like Jack, David, Debbie and Angie's interesting day at "Fun Park"!

Ok, so this movie is no high-budget dreamboat, but the fun and originality of it, more than makes up for it.

I'll admit I'm quite biased when it comes to anything that's got 80's in it, so I'm the first to admit that an 80's sceptic won't be impressed with this movie, but you won't know for sure until you try!

Watch this one, and have fun, or be disgusted but do watch it!

Cute and Clever Innocent 80s Comedy
nicko25200830 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I picked this movie up on DVD I haven't seen it since a long time ago when it was on VHS release. It's really just a simple goofy 80s comedy with a diamond Heist thrown in and kind of a love story. The guys immediately say can I go to a place that begins with "F and ends with k" you guessed it...Fun Park. The story follows 2 young guys who go to a carnival and meet two girls, kind of Boy Meets Girl classic story. At times it's a very funny and very simple movie but also very clever, I forgot just how clever the movie really is, it has a lot of cheesy humor, for instance how the boys misunderstand the girls and vice versa. He tells his little friend when she says "no she means yes" or how the girls think that the guys only wants sex and the guys think girls only want attention when it was actually opposite!! Very funny.. or how really you don't really know what you want but you get what you need kind of thing. I enjoyed it a lot more than I remember. An unbelievable soundtrack and super 80's aesthetic make this unique and enjoyable comedy worth watching. See this movie if you like 80s movies in general or like romantic comedies. 7.5 very funny.

oh mah gah
dahlia-828 July 2000
my friend and i pooled our pocket change and bought this at the drugstore, on tape, for 99 cents. and boy, were we glad we did!

this movie is ungodly bad, i mean really incredibly ridiculously bad. it's embarrassing when it tries to be funny and more so when it gets salacious, which is frequently. the acting is awful, the plot negligible and the fashion? *shudder*

highly recommended for anyone who's glad it's not the 80s any more and wishes to debunk some nostalgia.

The director of this movie should have his ass beaten!
Rayvyn6 August 2002
Yep the director of Breaking All the Rules deserves a good old fashioned Alabama ass whipping. Why? Because anyone who can sit there and direct this train wreck deserves severe bodily harm. BTW I just read that the director, James Orr was arrested for beating his girlfriend Farrah Fawcett back in 1998.

The movie is pure junk. It's about two teenage boy trying to get laid and a diamond thief. The thieves are stupid. They hide a stolen diamond in a stuffed animal at one of those carnival games. Then our two horny teens win the animal for their girlfriends. One of the most stupid moments comes when one guy says "We're gonna do something that begins with an "F" and ends with a "K". The other one says, "Is there a "U" in it?" They wind up gong to "Fun Park". Yes that was a very bad joke and this is one of the main reasons the director needs his ass beat. The only good things in this movie is at the beginning they play "Mannish Boy" by Muddy Waters and at the end they play "Let the Music Play" by Shannon. The sex scenes in this movie are so dumb, nobody these kids age can be that ignorant about sex. This movie should be shown to film students to show them what NOT to do!

Ok I've said enough bad things about this movie. Avoid it like the plague

Uhhnnnn..
-528 January 1999
I am usually pretty tolerant of crap cinema. In fact, I usually go out of my way to ensure that my rental choice is the absolute worst I can find in the store. Big, faded box, hand-drawn cover.. those movies are gems. For the most part. This one wasn't. This vile teen sex comedy made me violently, gut-wrenchingly ill. If by some rare chance you were looking around for a

review of this film, I suppose I can waste a few more precious minutes of my life and give you one.. Beverly Hills brat girl tires of her mundane, sheltered

existence, gets punk makeover (complete with half-shirt

that says "savage") and drags her best friend along for the ride, looking for cute guys to toy with and eventually abandon. Enter typical horn dog jock meathead type and his hapless, virgin buddy. And then throw in a feeble criminal caper involving a not-so-well-guarded rare jewel that looks remarkably like one you'd plop 25 cents in a machine to get. So, these crazy kids and bumbling criminals butt heads, with hilarious results! Not bloody likely.. Not a single thing was funny in this movie. No camp value, nothing. Some 80's skank, typical laundromat recruits,

but nothing of any real note. Just sheer cinema masochism for your hard-earned dollar. Feel like enduring particularly brutal sensory torture? Rent this. (Do NOT, however, watch this back to back with Pistol Packin' Leroy, like I did. A combination with potentially fatal results..)

Absolutely terrible teen comedy
Wizard-817 November 2013
The events of "Breaking All The Rules" almost all take place at a place called Fun Park, but there is absolutely no fun to be found in this dismal Canadian comedy. I was able to forgive the movie for its unanswered questions like why a valuable gem is being exhibited in a third rate amusement park, but not for much else. There are plenty of attempts at humor, and while some are *almost* funny (such as the scene taking place in the bus), in the end *none* of the attempts at humor actually work. The cast seems to know they are in an utter bomb, because their performances come across as labored and with no sense of having any fun. In fact, the director seems to be feeling the same way as his poor actors, because the energy level is woefully low and there is absolutely no feeling of enthusiasm or passion. The icing on the cake is the cheap feeling of the entire enterprise, from the shabby production values to the grating songs on the soundtrack. The Canadian government actually provided funding for this movie, and while I normally like it when the government takes a break from funding boring and pretentious art films as it usually does for something more commercial, in the end this so-called commercial film is almost as tough to sit through as those painful art films.
