When Martin Scorsese set to work making "Hugo," a film based on Brian Selznick's children's book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," it immediately got tongues wagging. What on Earth was the director behind films like "Taxi Driver," "Goodfellas," and "The Departed" doing helming a whimsical kids' adventure? At the time, his youngest daughter, Francesca (who's now internet famous for the Tiktok videos she makes with her old man), was only a preteen "We always joke around, my wife saying, 'Make a film your kid can see for once,'" Scorsese told THR. He added that it wasn't the only reason he made the film, "but it did help."
The point is, sometimes filmmakers just want to make a film their kids can watch. Such was the case for Stuart Gordon back in the late 1980s. The late multi-hyphenate had burst onto the horror scene earlier that decade thanks to...

Disney has shared a new trailer for their upcoming Disney+ streaming service and it’s over 3-hours long! I don’t know if you want to spend over three hours seeing what Disney+ has to offer when it launches, but you have the option!
Disney+ also posted all of the films and TV shows coming to the streaming service on a super long Twitter thread, which I included below the trailer. As you’ll see there’s a ton of stuff that will be available that will make Disney fans happy. Gargoyles and several other classic 90s animated series are among them along with a lot of old weird films that have been pulled out of the Disney vault.
If you don’t want to watch the trailer or scroll through the Twitter feed, I shared the full list of titles for you. Check everything out below and let us...

Ho, ho, ho! Patton Oswalt's new wife Meredith Salenger is celebrating Christmas with a tree for the first time, with the comedian and actor and his 8-year-old daughter Alice, her new stepdaughter. The actress, who rose to fame in 1985 with her starring role in The Journey of Natty Gann, was raised Jewish. "My first ever very own Christmas Tree!" Meredith wrote on Instagram late on Wednesday, alongside a photo of her with Patton and Alice in front of a tree decorated with traditional colorful ornaments, lights and a big star on top. "Fun night in: trimming the tree and sending Christmas cards! Also something I've never done! #family." The three were...

This is the first trailer for a new film starring Noah Wyle (ER) called Shot. The story is set in Los Angeles and it follows a sound designer, who is struck by a stray bullet. This event will forever affect the lives of three individuals. I like what I'm seeing in this trailer. It looks like an intense film with an interesting story that's worth checking out.
Shot begins as sound mixer Mark Newman (Wyle), is pumping up the volume on a bloody shootout scene in an action film. Hours later, after an argument with his wife Phoebe (Leal), Mark is suddenly felled by a real random bullet, and lies bleeding on the pavement with a chest wound. With Phoebe desperately trying to stop the bleeding, they both agonizingly wait for an ambulance to arrive as Mark fights for his life. Meanwhile, hidden behind a fence across the street, a teenager,...

Patton Oswalt has found love again.
The 48-year-old comedian is engaged to actress Meredith Salenger, the couple's reps confirm to Et. "They are engaged and in love," Salenger's rep says in a statement.
The bride-to-be cleverly shared the news on Instagram by posting an older photo of herself and Oswalt to Instagram, and photoshopped Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson onto her left hand.
"I don't wanna brag... but check out the size of The Rock on my finger! Hahahah," the 47-year-old actress captioned the selfie on Thursday morning.

From reissued, obscure first films to misleading marketing, here are 12 film covers that exaggerate the role their famous actors play...
Filmmaker William Castle was famous for his movie gimmicks, from vibrating chairs to plastic skeletons soaring over the heads of audiences in cinemas. The marketers of 1958's The Fly, meanwhile, promised to pay $100 to the first person who could prove that its matter-transportation plot "couldn't happen".
Selling movies to cynical punters is tough at the best of times, and using tricks and white lies to get people to part with their hard-earned cash is nothing new. And one of the simplest tricks in a film marketer's tool bag is to exaggerate an actor's role in whatever it is they're trying to sell. So if uncredited bit player number two suddenly becomes an A-list star three years after a movie's shot, you can be...

We're wrapping up Reader Appreciation Month but so many people seem to be enjoying "reader of the day" that we'll keep doing them... just not every single day. Stay tuned...
I thought we'd close the month with Yonatan (you can call him "Jonathan") from Israel. Why? Well because he had a job a couple of years back that I think all of you (not to mention me) would be jealous of: talking about the movies on TV! Sweet.
He started reading The Film Experience due to the foreign film Oscar pages and he was one of many readers who started sending me regular info on their home country so I could keep up the pages. Yonatan and I share a love of really insignificant trivia. For instance, he recently wondered aloud by e-mail if Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days (1995) and Jane Campion's Portrait of a Lady were the longest...

John Cusack would probably hate reading this; I'm told he's a fairly private person who hates dealing with the press. But I grew up with his films and have always considered him something like my cinematic alter ego. He and I are about the same age (Ok, he's two years older), and his characters' concerns and discoveries have often mirrored my own, and I suspect I'm not alone in this. Cusack is very good at this "everyman" character, tapping into the secret self of an entire generation. He's kind of a nerd, but he's capable of tossing a football around. He's good looking, but never really fits in with the good-looking crowd. He's an average student, but still whip-smart. He's funny without ever seeming clownish. He's a loner, but sometimes has close friends. He's cool enough to play a crook, but sensitive enough to be tormented by his duties.

New Line Cinema is gearing up to bring to the big screen the true story of the most successful female rodeo rider in history. The studio is developing Scamper, a feature film about the life of champion rider Charmayne James. Jeanne Rosenberg, who has penned several successful horse-related films, including the 1979 classic The Black Stallion, will pen the script. Titled for the name of James Champion' horse, Scamper will revolve around the relationship between James and her horse and culminate with her being crowned World Champion Barrel Racer for the first time in 1985 at age 15. The story will focus on how Scamper was considered an unridable horse until trained by James, who then went on to win 11 championships, including nine straight on Scamper. There are no producers attached to the project, which is being overseen by New Line production executives Chris Godsick and Mark Kaufman. In addition to penning The Black Stallion, Rosenberg recently scripted the large-format prequel The Young Black Stallion for the Walt Disney Co. and has written such features as White Fang and The Journey of Natty Gann. Rosenberg is repped by the Gersh Agency.
