Taiwan cinema has presented some of the best entries in the realistic/arthouse gangster film genre, with movies like “Dust of Angels”, “The Great Buddha+” and “Godspeed” highlighting the fact quite eloquently. Another standout of this approach is definitely “Goodbye South, Goodbye” a film, however that was the last of the Taiwanese auteur that was not successful.

In 1986, Hou Hsiao-hsien concluded the “Coming of Age” trilogy with “Dust in the Wind”, which was however, a commercial failure, despite the excellent reviews it got. The script is based upon the life experiences of Wu Nien-jen, co-writer of the movie along Chu Tien-wen, who is considered as one of the most important and prolific artists of New Cinema, as scriptwriter, director and actor.

Phil Ehart, the original and longstanding drummer of classic rockers Kansas, recently suffered a major heart attack. While he’s stepping away from performing for the time being, he will continue his role as the band’s manager.
Eric Holmquist, who has filled in for Ehart previously, will man the drum kit when Kansas’ ongoing 50th anniversary tour resumes March 1st in Richmond, Virginia. The North American leg is scheduled through a May 18th show in New Haven, Connecticut, with tickets available here.
Kansas issued the following statement on Friday morning (February 23rd):
“Kansas original drummer and band manager, Phil Ehart, is taking time away from touring as drummer for Kansas while he recovers after recently surviving a major heart attack. There is no timetable for his return to the road. While not on the road, Phil is remaining in a prominent role with Kansas during his recovery, serving as band manager,...

Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” was controversial in the 1970s. The band’s song “Carry On Wayward Son” received pushback for the same reason as “Dust in the Wind.” “Dust in the Wind” and “Carry On Wayward Son” were both big hits.
Some classic rock songs were controversial upon their first release. For example, Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” received negative press in the 1970s. A member of the band felt the criticism wasn’t legitimate.

The Monkees’ supervisor worked with Kansas before “Carry On Wayward Son.” No one else was interested in Kansas at the time. Only one song by the band was more popular than “Carry On Wayward Son.”

Kansas founding member Kerry Livgren hesitated to bring “Dust In The Wind” to his bandmates, thinking they wouldn’t like it. In a surprising twist, the song was a huge success and helped launch the band’s music career. Even though the song wound up being Kansas’s only top-10 hit, it almost didn’t happen.
Phil Ehart recalled hearing ‘Dust In The Wind’ for the first time
What started out as a chord pattern Livgren used as a fingerpicking exercise turned into Kansas’ most popular song. However, for several reasons, the “Dust In The Wind” almost didn’t exist.
In a recent interview with Ucr, Kansas drummer Phil Ehart recalled the day Livgren showed them the song.
“When Kerry played ‘Dust In The Wind’ for us. We had never really done an entire acoustic song,” Ehart explained. “I think we had some acoustic interludes and stuff in some of our music.

In the mid-’70s, Kansas rose to fame with the hit “Carry On Wayward Son,” featured on the classic rock band’s fourth studio album, Leftoverture. The group followed that with two big songs off its fifth album, Point of Know Return, making Kansas a household name. However, drummer Phil Ehart says releasing three back-to-back hits was unintentional.
‘Point of Know Return’ featured 2 hit songs
Kansas released Point of Know Return in 1977. The studio album featured the band’s biggest hit, “Dust in the Wind,” and other fan favorites, including “Sparks of the Tempest” and “Closet Chronicles.” In a January 2023 conversation with Ultimate Classic Rock, Ehart explained how the title track became an unexpected hit.
“[Point of Know Return] was a title I came up with. I had no idea that Steve [Walsh] was going to base the song around the title. He said, ‘You mind if I use that title?’ I said, ‘We’re...

Before the members of Kansas found their sound, they had a very different approach to rock music. Guitarist Rich Williams went so far as to describe their playing as “aggressive” and untrained. However, that changed when outside influences inspired the band to take a more orchestral approach.
Rich Williams credited the introduction of prog rock for Kansas’ sound
Fans may have a hard time imagining the band best known for hits like “Carry on Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind” having a heavy sound. But according to Williams, that was common for the founding members who played together as teens. In a recent interview with Guitar World, he recalled their playing style, saying:
“Prior to Kansas, Dave Hope [bass], and I had played together previously in a band. And we were playing the rock hits of the days, and because none of us were trained, we didn’t understand a delicate approach to anything.

Since its release in 1977, Kansas’s most notable song has inspired dozens of covers and adaptations. Musicians have transformed the hit “Dust in the Wind” into nearly every genre imaginable, including rap and electronica. While some bands wouldn’t find the constant rewriting of their music flattering, Kansas drummer Phil Ehart has a different opinion.

Kansas fans may find it hard to believe the band never had a number one hit song, despite releasing catchy tunes that would still play on the radio decades later. The progressive rock band is best known for their hit single “Carry On Wayward Son,” but even this classic song didn’t crack the Top 10. Instead, it was another track by Kansas that reached number six on music charts and became the band’s highest-charting song.

Stephen Herek's 1989 time travel comedy "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" was one of the stranger hits of its decade. The film followed two affable but none-too-bright teenager layabouts from San Dimas, California (site of the water park Raging Waters). Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are flunking out of school, having spent most of their free time focusing on their rock band Wyld Stallyns. If they cannot pass an upcoming history exam, they will be split up and their band will be abandoned. This, it turns out, would be disastrous for the entire planet, as Bill and Ted's music is destined, in the distant future, to usher in a Roddenberian sci-fi utopia.

The official video for Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” is typical of many music videos from the late Seventies: There’s an endless amount of hair, a few questionably ruffled tuxedo shirts, and some more hair. In the same way that Journey’s 1978 video for “Lights” humorously featured light literally beaming out of the band members’ extravagant outfits, the Kansas clip uses a fog machine to dramatically represent all that dust in the wind.

Although he recovered and was about to be released from medical care, he suffered another bout with sepsis.
In a statement today, the band wrote: “The members of the band Kansas, past and present, wish to express our deepest sorrow over the death of our bandmate and friend, Robby Steinhardt. Robby will always be in our souls, in our minds, and in our music. What he brought to us as bandmates, to the fans who attended our concerts, and to the sound of Kansas,...

“I’m near the bottom/Name the blues, I’ve got ‘em,” the National frontman Matt Berninger sings on the delicately despondent “Oh, Dearie,” from his debut solo LP. It’s a song about being completely asphyxiated by fear and doubt — certainly a message for our times. But don’t call the crisis hotline just yet. The music is more reassuringly cozy than last-ditch dire, with the singer pouring his enveloping, care-worn baritone over softly illuminating piano and a “Dust in the Wind” acoustic figure. The sound is par for...

One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. Hou Hsiao-hsien's Dust in the Wind (1986) is showing September 18 — October 18 in the series Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and New Taiwanese Cinema. A clock at the train station signals Wan (Wang Chien-wen) and Huen's (Xin Shufen) fated arrival in Taipei. The two wide-eyed sweethearts, who innocently confuse familiarity for true romance, have together moved towards the light at the end of the tunnel stretching far beyond their small mining town. But after a series of hurried introductions, their first day ends in fury when Huen opens a gift from Wan's father: an expensive watch paid for in installments. If viewed with trust, it stands as a symbol of life as a sparkling cycle of opportunity, rotating endlessly against your skin. And it is also "100 percent waterproof," his friends exclaim. But...

The Monday April 15 episode of the ABC revival of “American Idol” saw the Top 14 reduced to the Top 10. Seven of the singers continuing on in the show — Alejandro Aranda, Laci Kaye Booth, Walker Burroughs, Wade Cota, Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg — learnt that they numbered among America’s favorites and earned places in the Top 10 based on their performances on Sunday’s show.
The other seven contestants were told by host Ryan Seacrest that the judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — would choose just three of them to move forward in the competition based on the songs that they sung on Monday’s show. The trio of talent that the panel put through to the Top 10 were: Dimitrius Graham, Alyssa Raghu and Uche.

No one expected Monday’s episode of American Idol — which narrowed its crop of finalists down to 10 — to be easy, but I don’t think anyone expected it to be this messy, either.
From Ryan Seacrest’s uncomfortable walk-and-talks with the contestants (most of whom responded with one-word answers in a desperate attempt to move on) to his super awkward announcements of the individual results (those fake-outs were… bad), the season’s first official live episode was… kind of a mess. And that’s not even including the times that the judges literally discussed how awkward this show’s elimination process is.

The April 15 episode of “American Idol” will see the Top 14 cut down to the final 10 artists still in contention for the season 17 title. Each of the remaining contestants sang one song on Sunday’s show. On Monday, host Ryan Seacrest will reveal which seven number among America’s favorites and have earned places in the Top 10. Upon learning their fate, each contestant will then have to sing one more song. The three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — will confer and choose the three to go on in the competition (and the four to be sent home).
The season 17 finalists are: Alejandro Aranda, Laci Kaye Booth, Walker Burroughs, Evelyn Cormier, Wade Cota, Dimitrius Graham, Laine Hardy, Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, Ashley Hess, Eddie Island, Uché Ndubizu, Alyssa Raghunandan, Riley Thompson and Madison VanDenburg.
Be sure to make your predictions so that the contestants can see how they’re faring in our racetrack odds.

It took director Yang Li-chou 10 years and a stream of producers to complete his documentary project “Father”, charting the disappearing of one of the traditional Taiwanese performing arts, Budaixi, the glove puppetry, and the destiny of a family. “Father” had finally the international premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and is at the moment touring the Festival circuit.
“Father” is screening at Taiwan Film Festival UK
The documentary focuses on the elderly puppet master Chen Hsi-huang and his determination in preserving this form of art and passing it on to the next generation. In the opening of the movie, we see his beautiful old hands showing the movements that animate the puppets in a mesmerising graceful dance. The fervour in teaching and coaching for free anyone willing to learn is the relentless engine behind this man.
Budaixi has often been politically charged, banned during the Japanese occupation, resuscitated as propaganda later,...

“The last thing I hate is that life always forces us to keep moving forwards.”
In the aftermath of the New York Film Festival, reporter Vincent Canby wrote an article about the films of the festival he aptly named “Why Some Films Don’t Travel Well”. Works such as Zhang Yimou’s “Red Sorghum”, Andrei Konchalovsky’s “Asya’s Happiness” and Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s “Daughter of the Nile” are mostly relevant thanks to their “sociology factor” Canby begins his article, an aspect that these works are and have been applauded for around the world while as films themselves they are not that interesting. Hou Hsiao-Hien, one of the most popular directors of Taiwanese New Cinema along with Edward Yang, was still trying to find a cinematic language for his films, one which strongly resembled the works of Yasujiro Ozu in terms of style and content, the sense of resignation, as...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Avengers: Infinity War,” in theaters now.]
“Avengers: Infinity War” continues to dominate at the box office, taking the number one domestic spot for the third week in a row, and grossing $1.6 billion worldwide making it the fifth highest-grossing film of all-time. To put it more simply, Thanos rules. But his shakeup of the McU we’ve grown to know and love over the past ten years has a lot of people asking, just what exactly happened to the characters who were off-screen during “Infinity War”?
While directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been tight-lipped about the plot details of “Avengers 4,” they have been candid about who survived Thanos’ snap, which wiped out a bevy of beloved characters, including Black Panther, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Drax, and many more. In a recent interview with IndieWire’s Kate Erbland, the filmmaking brothers admitted that the decision wasn’t an easy one, but that it needed to be done.

The original title of Yang Li-chou's latest documentary, which means “The Red Box” in Chinese, alludes to the small artifact which represents the spirit and traditions of Taiwanese puppet maestro Chen Hsi-huang and his art form. Its English counterpart, meanwhile, points to Chen’s troubled relationship with his father, the legendary puppeteer-actor Li Tian-lu, best known for his starring roles in Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Dust in the Wind, City of Sadness and, of course, The Puppetmaster.
While there are overlaps between these two themes, Yang struggles to make them evident within Father's 100-minute running time. With his archival research and interviews conducted...
