Sex & Nudity

  • A man bares his rump to receive a medicinal shot. Only visible from the side.
  • We see Claudia's underwear through a nearly transparent nightgown in the introductory scene of the film.
  • A main character describes how his "asshole hurts" and his "dick burns", impling that he has had sex with multiple prostitutes.

  • A couple instances of sexual dialogue in the first half of the movie.

Violence & Gore

  • We see what appears to be a mass grave full of bodies; Mexican civilians cry as they sort through photos, identifying loved ones lost. Some skeletal remains are seen. It is also implied that there is a rotting stench in the area, as characters hold scarves to their noses and make faces.
  • A character and his friend get into a fight with a gang; we see punches thrown, as well as a drunk man attempting to aim a broken beer bottle like a gun.
  • A dog is euthanized (off-screen). A main character is upset by this.
  • A man is injected with an enormous needle in the buttocks by an elderly woman (this scene is played for comedy; see "Sex & Nudity").
  • Boyle and Doc come across the charred body of a man on-screen. The man's screaming, blackened face is seen, resembling a skeleton's. It is revealed that a student was killed by the troops, and that the two protagonists have unwittingly driven into the conflict.
  • A soldier says "the fiesta is just beginning!" just before a group of women are gang-raped and killed.
  • We see the protagonist's rather bloodied face after a supposed beating. We also see a few shootings.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Someone says Boyle slept with Maria, then left her to a life of poverty in Mexico to raise the baby after she became pregnant. The dialogue implies that Boyle has left multiple pregnant women behind to raise children out of wedlock.

Violence & Gore

  • Women are pulled from a van and gang-raped; breasts are shown briefly.
  • Maria's little brother is killed. Boyle and Maria are visibly distraught in separate scenes. The brother is covered in blood and laid out on a concrete slab after appearing to have been tortured to death.
  • Four women, including an elderly woman, are dragged from a van, told "the fiesta is just beginning!", then gang-raped brutally. One man drools over a woman as he forcefully thrusts over her, another woman screams as her blouse is torn off. Each woman is shot point-blank afterward. Their purple, bloated bodies are discovered a short time later. A man and child cover the women's faces in palm fronds to preserve some of their dignity.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The ending features Maria and her two children being deported back to El Salvador, upsetting Boyle greatly, who tries to tell the guards that she'll be raped and murdered if they send her back. The film fades to black, leaving the story ambiguous, then text reveals that the real-life Maria and her children have since been confirmed to be alive in a refugee camp.
  • Archbishop Romero is shot 2-3 times in the chest.
