Brad Dourif has had an incredible acting career that stretches back more than fifty years – and back in the early days of that career, he even earned a “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1975 classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Over a decade later, he started playing the role he is best known for, that of Charles Lee Ray, a.k.a. Chucky, a serial killer who uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the body of a doll. Dourif is now 74 years old, so when we hear that he has decided to retire from acting, it’s totally understandable… but while talking about his retirement, Dourif has also made sure to assure fans that his days of Chucky are not over. He will still continue to work on any Chucky projects that might come up.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Child’s Play is one of the precious few mainstream horror franchises to maintain its original continuity, even overcoming a remake and making the leap to television. A lot of credit is due to Don Mancini, who wrote the original script and has continued to shepherd the series ever since, but there would be no franchise if the first installment wasn’t successful. In that regard, master of horror Tom Holland deserves endless recognition for his direction as well as work on the script.
Child’s Play: A Visual Memoir by Tom Holland is, as its title suggests, a look back at the production through the filmmaker’s eyes. The 152-page hardcover book collects close to 150 behind-the-scenes photos — many of which are previously unreleased — accompanied by Holland’s running commentary plus his original treatment for the film. Presented in black and white, the images are...

It was a time when horror reigned supreme, when slasher icons stabbed their way through cinemas, when practical effects oozed from the pores of mind-bending creations that had to be seen on the big screen to be believed. It was the ’80s, and this magical era of horror is dissected with more than 40 top-level interviews in the new documentary In Search of Darkness.
With just a few days remaining on the documentary's final Indiegogo campaign, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of talking with one of the key interviewees from In Search of Darkness, legendary filmmaker Tom Holland, who discussed some of the main themes that will be covered in the new documentary, including the industry's mindset of horror in the ’80s, the decades-long endurance of the genre, and the groundbreaking practical effects that were used in Fright Night and Child's Play.

Australian actress Emma Hamilton is set to star in Fatal Beauty, a Mar Vista Entertainment indie feature written and directed by Joel Soisson. It follows Trevor and Michelle Gustafson (Hamilton) who have what most would think is the typical suburban life. When new neighbors move in next door, tensions between Michelle and Trevor build up, and sinister motives from neighbors turn this quiet neighborhood into a place of chaos, shame, and fear. Margret Huddleston, Michael Leahy, and Lori Leahy are producing the project which will begin filming this month. Hamilton, whose credits include the Australian series, Hyde & Seek, and Showtime’s The Tudors, is repped by The Rosenzweig Group, Abrams Artists and Troika in the UK.
Kimberly Hebert Gregory has signed on for the indie drama, Miss Virginia, joining Uzo Aduba, Matthew Modine, Aunjanue Ellis, and Vanessa Williams. R.J. Daniel Hanna is directing the inspired-by-a-true-story pic about a struggling...

Vin Scully, the voice of the Dodgers, is calling it a career this weekend after 67 years in the booth. If you will indulge me, I’d like to tell you about one of my favorite moments from Scully behind the microphone, and about one night at Dodger Stadium that will make me miss him even more.
But first, a little background. I was never a big baseball guy growing up, even though I played a couple of seasons on a local Little League team. (Our squad was called the Firemen.) During those days, when I wasn’t playing the game, either in Little League or somewhere on my grandma’s farm with my cousins, the presence of a baseball broadcast usually meant that something I’d rather have been watching on TV was unavailable to see because someone else wanted to watch the damn game. (I tried to sit down,...

I first became acquainted with director Peter Medak’s work in 1983 when I saw his 1980 masterwork The Changeling, one of the most frightening ghost stories shot in color. Also known for 1972’s The Ruling Class and 1990’s The Krays, Mr. Medak made the film noir Romeo is Bleeding, shot in 1992 and released on Friday, February 4, 1994. The film is told in an elliptical narrative fashion, starting with the end and going back in time to show us how the protagonist got to where he is. We first see Jack Grimaldi in a dilapidated diner, his voiceover indicative of a man full of regrets who is probably in the Witness Protection Program and forced to lead a life bereft of any true purpose or feeling. Once upon a time, he was a police officer in New York City and his partners are comprised of actors we know well today:...

On Nov. 9, 1988, the horror character Chucky debuted as Child’s Play hit theaters. While the technical aspects of the film were praised, the characters and material were not. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below:
Many horror films tread a thin line between the frightening and the absurd. Child’s Play, United Artists’ new horror film directed by Tom Holland (Fatal Beauty, Fright Night), wobbles too often on the wrong side of that line.
As a result, its box office take is likely to be equally erratic, with its best prospects being for a quick smash-and-grab, a la the method ...

With the arrival of the brand new Child’s Play Blu-ray box set today and the 25th anniversary of Tom Holland’s original film just one month away (almost to the day in fact), it seemed only fitting to sit down and chat with the film’s co-writer and director about the project, especially considering we don’t often get the opportunity to hear from Holland about this modern horror classic which introduced to the world a new icon of horror- Chucky.
Daily Dead recently conducted an extensive video interview with Holland in honor of Child’s Play‘s upcoming anniversary and because there was so much incredible stuff that we were able to discuss with the Master of Horror, we came back with three video interviews chock full of awesome to share with you.

It’s been 16 years since Tom Holland‘s last feature film, Thinner, hit screens. It came at the end of a career of writing work like Class of 1984 and Psycho 2 and directing Fight Night and Fatal Beauty. But now, it’s not the end. According to Deadline Castle Rock, Holland is going to make Stephen King‘s “Ten O’Clock People” his next feature film. Beyond this and Thinner, Holland also adapted King’s “The Langoliers” for TV and appears in The Stand. The story for Ten O’Clock People focuses on a man quitting smoking, who discovers that he (and others trying to kick the habit) are able to see hideous monsters who have disguised themselves and made their way to prominent positions in society. Just like we all knew all along. These Batmen pose a great threat, and it will be interesting to see Holland flesh out King’s short story which is, admittedly...

As I stated in a S & A piece I wrote about Whoopi over a year ago or so, it’s hard to believe it now, but there was a time during the early 90′s when she was the highest paid actress in Hollywood making $10-12 million a picture. And if you translate those 90′s dollars to current 2011 dollars, she still would be the highest paid actress ever.
However, after bursting on to the scene with The Color Purple, Whoopi went on the make a whole slew of really crummy pictures like Burglar (Yikes!) and Jumping Jack Flash (Groan!). But for me the 1987 MGM film Fatal Beauty stood out in its own unique way.
Now granted, it’s not by any measure a good film and is basically a routine 80′s cop action movie with the requisite lousy, tin-eared dialogue with bad 80′s synthesized music, bad 80′s hair and bad 80′s clothes.

We know it’s snowing outside (for most of you, anyway; for Empire, all the snow was washed away from Oxford Street by the time we got in, upsetting our plans to arrive three hours’ late, armed with snow shoes and flimsy excuses about the Victoria Line), but here’s something that should cheer you up: six new character one-sheets from Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief.Look at them. Just look at them. Pretty, aren’t they? Well, kinda – we like the actual character shots, but there’s a fundamental flaw here: none of the characters are actually named on the posters, which might scupper chances of increasing Percy Jackson’s name and brand awareness by the time the Chris Columbus movie comes out in just over a month. For example, while we can put names to ‘Daughter Of Athena’ (that’s Alexandra Daddario’s Annabeth Chase), ‘Son Of Poseidon...

Monstrous Feminism and the Avenging Amazon By Paula Graham
On the whole, feminists and lesbians tend to treat the figure of the Amazon as a positive trope for lesbianism and/or feminism. On the one hand, she has the 'masculine' characteristics of strength, physicality and activity and, on the other, she is female-oriented. Her combination of male and female characteristics apparently undermines the exclusivity of gender categories. Her 'chastity' combined with her 'phallic' physicality has obvious lesbian implications. She is perceived by many lesbians and feminists as both 'positive' and 'subversive'...
Representations of the Amazon or female warrior in patriarchal culture, however, may acknowledge a perceived 'threat' of female aggression and seek to neutralise it. Narratives of female militancy tend to enjoy a resurgence in Western patriarchal cultures precisely at historical moments in which there has been an exceptional opening out of gender categories under pressure of social change and political contestation.

A few weeks ago I peeled open my rib cage to reveal my raw, beating heart and the sound of that heart was (to the tune of “thump-thump, thump-thump”) : Fright-night, Fright-night, Fright….
Yeah, I worship writer/director Tom Holland’s 1985 vampire gem and I fly that fanged flag with pride.
But outside of the ace performances from Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowell, outside of Holland’s sharp, affectionate script and tense – yet playful – direction and outside of Richard Edlund’s gorgeous special effects, one of the major hooks that Fright Night jabbed into me was the soundtrack, a sexy, atmospheric synth score by Brad Fiedel and a motley collection of 80’s pop and metal tunes that fit the material perfectly, almost as if they were written specifically for the action on screen.
Well, it turns out for the most part, they were.
See, shortly after I published...

Horror buffs beware! A new production company has been formed by a couple of the most influential minds in the entertainment industry.
Dead Rabbit Films reunites Tom Holland, the legendary writer/director responsible for some of the most successful films in the horror genre such as Fright Night and Child's Play, with music biz empressario David Chackler (Queen, Buckingham/Nicks of Fleetwood Mac and 2Live Crew), whose resume also includes film production credits such as John Carpenter's Village of the Damned for Universal. Dead Rabbit Films will develop and produce feature films as well as scripted episodic television for emerging networks and mobile platforms.
The combination of the Holland and Chackler resumes reads like an insider's list of who's who in Hollywood. With associations from Stephen Spielberg to Stephen King, Tom Holland serves as the creative genius behind Dead Rabbit Films.
"Tom was at the forefront of creating and directing the contemporary horror genre.

DreamWorks is developing a remake of Fright Night, the 1985 horror-comedy flick written and directed by Tom Holland that starred Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse, Stephen Geoffreys and Roddy McDowall. The original Fright Night centered around a teenager who discovers that his neighbors are vampires. No writer has been hired, but the updated version will keep the comedy-horror tone while modernizing the effects. Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig (Windtalkers) of are producing along with Michael De Luca (Ghost Rider). Rosenzweig, who also is setting up remakes of The Reincarnation of Peter Proud and Angel Heart with De Luca, brought the project to him. Fright Night marked the directorial debut of Holland, who went on to helm Fatal Beauty, Child's Play, which is also in the process of being remade, The Temp and Stephen King's Thinner. A sequel, Fright Night Part 2, opened in 1988.
