As far as investigators go, Jim Rockford (James Garner) is a bit of a departure from the mostly-polished (Columbo excepted) detectives of television's first decade. A slouchily dressed detective who lived in a trailer and served time in San Quentin, Rockford was cool — if not always collected. "The Rockford Files" ran for six seasons on NBC beginning in 1974 and was later resurrected for a series of '90s TV movies. In that time, audiences were introduced not only to Rockford, but to a cast of supporting characters including his truck driver dad Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.), LAPD pal Becker (Joe Santos), and the con artist Angel (Stuart Margolin).
Garner passed away in 2014, and only a few "Rockford Files" castmates are still with us today. Those who are still around include notable recurring guest stars like famously mustachioed "Blue Bloods" star Tom Selleck, Egot-winning multi-hyphenate Rita Moreno, and "Happy Gilmore" director...

Even as he collected his martini, the burly stranger who introduced himself as “Joe” exuded an aura of belligerence. We were standing on the fringe of a post-screening reception, so, hand extended, I blurted, “Did the movie work for you?”
“It was blah,” he replied. “Given what they spent for the script, they should have made a powerful f*ckin’ movie.”
At the time I didn‘t realize I was talking with Joe Eszterhas, who had made $4 million from sale of his script — more an auction than a sale and hardly “blah.” Joe and several estimable writing colleagues were participants in what came to be known in the mid-‘80s as the “Writers Rebellion,” a moment when top screenwriters decided to reinvent what they considered a broken system for propagating their creative product.

9-1-1 is adding a face from Bobby’s (Peter Krause) past for the second half of Season 7.
According to Deadline, Malcolm-Jamal Warner has landed a four-episode arc as Amir.
Amir is a nurse in a hospital’s burn unit with a surprising connection to Bobby.
Details about how the pair come into contact have not been disclosed, but given that we know Amir’s profession, there’s a good chance it will result from a character winding up in that unit.
If Amir’s tie is to Bobby, we expect it to be someone from the 118.
Let’s hope it isn’t Buck (Oliver Stark). He needs a break after his brush with death after being struck by lightning.
Could Malcolm Jamal-Warner become a new series regular?
It’s unclear whether the four episodes could become something more because 9-1-1 has already earned a Season 8 renewal at ABC.

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But eight years have passed, and while Furiosa is ready to go (with...

Typically, when a movie is a box office smash, that means that it makes a ton of money. But for the legendary stars of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, they mean it in a much more literal sense.

In 1985, Cannon Films brought us a Chuck Norris action movie called Invasion USA, which involved Norris’s character – former CIA agent Matt Hunter – trying to stop an invasion of the United States that’s being carried out (in December) by a team of Soviet and Cuban guerrillas headed up by a villain played by Richard Lynch. It’s a violent, explosive shoot ’em up that makes for good Christmastime viewing alongside classics like Lethal Weapon, First Blood, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and Die Hard. It wasn’t a massive hit (it made $17.5 million on a budget of $12 million) and didn’t go over well with critics – but it has its fans, and apparently even helped overthrow the Communist government of Romania!

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jack Reacher’s Alan Ritchson are to co-star in a Christmas movie for Amazon/MGM called The Man With The Bag.
Of all the films Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in across his long career, 1996’s Jingle All The Way was undoubtedly one of them. And, almost 30 years on from that festive comedy, it’s announced that the Austrian Oak is making another Christmas film, this time for Amazon MGM Studios.
It’s called The Man With The Bag, and according to The Hollywood Reporter’s plot summary, sees Santa Claus on the hunt from his stolen, enchanted bag. This leads Santa to “team up with Vance, a reformed thief and denizen of the naughty list” to find it, with Vance’s daughter and a “team of misfit elves” also taken along for the adventure.
We’re pretty sure that the container Santa used to shuttle his gifts around...

While buddy cop movies like Lethal Weapon and Bad Boys have had their fair share of success at the box office, some of the most popular and iconic action films of all time have centered around a lone protagonist taking on the bad guys in an outnumbered and seemingly impossible setting, known as the “One Man Army” genre. Many classic action movies have exemplified this sub-genre, showcasing a single individual facing insurmountable odds and emerging victorious through sheer determination and skill. As the action genre continues to thrive in cinema, the theme of one man rising to the occasion and...

"It's not just a signal. That's a call for war." Warner Bros and Legendary have debuted the second official trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, again directed by filmmaker Adam Wingard, a sequel to 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong (which kicked ass). This next one is set to open in theaters everywhere at the end of March coming up pretty soon. The two mega monsters Godzilla and King Kong having to team up to take on a "colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world" - which seems to be some kind of "Red Ape" massive chimpanzee. GxK also delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while spending more time in the Hollow Earth realm where Kong is from. The cast of Godzilla x Kong features Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Rachel House, and Alex Ferns.

Merian C. Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack's classic monster movie "King Kong" was released in 1933, so the monster turns 91 years old in 2024. That means he's definitely too old for this sh*t.
In Adam Wingard's 2021 film "Godzilla vs. Kong," the 70-year-old nuclear gorilla-whale and the 91-year-old mega-ape, both drawn by an ineffable, in-born monstrous instinct, had to fight. Over the course of many decades, Godzilla movies have taught us that if two kaiju ever appear in the same film, they instantly hate one another and have to start wailing on each other. It won't be until a tertiary monster appears — usually an "evil" one — that the primary and secondary monsters put aside their differences and team up to hang a beatin' on the new guy. This is what happened in "Godzilla vs. Kong." At first, the title monsters were enemies. When Mechagodzilla appeared, however, Kong and Godzilla pounded the interloper into the dirt.

Let’s be real, perhaps the worst thing to happen before the upcoming “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire” is the release of “Godzilla Minus One.” That film proved that you can take the kaiju genre seriously and have incredible results, with a ton of people including it among the very best films released last year. And now, we have ‘Godzilla X Kong,’ which is the latest in the MonsterVerse franchise which sacrifices quality story for lots of big explosions and monster battles.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire didn’t release a big game TV spot during the Super Bowl. However, a new trailer for the film is set to premiere sometime this week. Until then, Empire has teased us with a new unseen image of the two gargantuan monsters as they team up against a new threat. Godzilla vs Kong brought our favorite movie monsters to a head-to-head rumble, and since the release of the teaser trailer, the money shot of Godzilla and Kong running side-by-side on the attack is a memorable image that fans have been gushing over.

Zombies often take the horror-comedy to a new level. In their shambling quest to mine humor from the most horrific circumstances, zombie comedies invert the apocalyptic nihilism that an outbreak of the undead tends to elicit. They also subvert the expectations of zombie horror, frequently going meta to poke fun at some of the most time honored tropes.

Mel Gibson is the Oscar-winning actor and director who has had his fair share of highs and lows, due in large part to several self-inflicted scandals. Let’s look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1956, Gibson and his family moved from New York to Australia, where he first came to prominence as an actor thanks to George Miller‘s original “Mad Max” trilogy, plus leading roles in Peter Weir‘s “Gallipoli” and “The Year of Living Dangerously.” He had equal success in the US, starring in everything from action films (the “Lethal Weapon” franchise) to romantic comedies (“What Women Want”).
He first hit the Oscar jackpot with the 1995 historical epic “Braveheart,” in which he also starred as Scottish warrior William Wallace. That film brought his wins in Best Picture and Best Director. Something about the juxtaposition of the holidays and ultra-violent action has always been irresistible to Hollywood. In movies like First Blood and To Live and Die in LA, the holiday theme makes the desperately violent scenario all the more grim. At the same time, other classics like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard ultimately have Christmas messages about friendship and family that come through just as strongly as in a straight-up Christmas movie like It’s a Wonderful Life.
Yet, not every Christmas action flick becomes a classic, which brings me to this special Christmas edition of The Best Movie You Never Saw, where we tackle the Dolph Lundgren Actioner I Come In Peace,...

Earlier this month, it was announced that Ray Romano, who starred in the incredibly popular CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond from 1996 to 2005, will be starring in an eight-episode dark comedy series called No Good Deed for the Netflix streaming service. Now Deadline reports that Romano is being joined in the cast by another sitcom legend: Lisa Kudrow, who played the character Phoebe Buffay on the incredibly popular NBC show Friends from 1994 to 2004.
Coming from Dead to Me creator Liz Feldman, No Good Deed will follow three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish style villa that they think will solve all their problems. But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare.
Romano is taking on the role of Paul Morgan. “Constantly stressed and flat broke, Paul is a contractor desperate to retire, pay off his debts and escape LA.

A fresh report suggests that the long-gestating buddy cop sequel Lethal Weapon 5 will shoot next year, with Mel Gibson in the director’s chair.
We know that a fifth entry in the Lethal Weapon series has been in the works for a long time. The late, great Richard Donner – director of the first four films – was working on it before he passed away in 2021. Then, in the same year we heard that Mel Gibson, one half of the series’ leading duo was set to take over the directorial reins. Of course, a lot has happened in the world since 2021, with a lot of that turbulence directly affecting Hollywood film production. However, despite all of the uncertainty, Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman (via World of Reel) is reporting that Lethal Weapon 5 will shoot next year.

The heat is back on in this episode of Revisited, as we follow up our last outing with Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop with the inevitable sequel. Part one proved to be such a mammoth hit that not only helped send Eddie Murphy’s career into the stratosphere but it guaranteed that part two wouldn’t be too far away.
If you take a look back at the 1980s, which is something we love to do here at JoBlo, there are many franchises that started in the era and still have longevity or an influence in modern Hollywood. However, when you have a movie as popular as Beverly Hills Cop, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a sequel will match the quality of the first, and it’s been a problem that Hollywood has faced over the years. Just how, exactly, do you keep your inbuilt audience happy while...

In the 1980s, it became common practice for action movies to be set around Christmas time. This theme was arguably made popular with the smash hit 1987 movie, Lethal Weapon. However, the trend carried on and many other classic action movies followed, using Christmas as a backdrop. These movies became classics in the action genre and also cemented themselves into the Christmas movie category. Although Christmas movie classics like Home Alone and Elf can be enjoyed by the whole family, there is a selection of Christmas movies that are aimed directly at adults. Whether they are spliced with crude humour...

Variety has reported that Joel Silver has been fired from several projects being developed for Amazon, including Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House remake and Mark Wahlberg’s Play Dirty. The once-iconic producer was behind some of the biggest movies of the ’80s and ’90s, including Commando, Lethal Weapon, Predator, and Die Hard, but he hasn’t been quite as prolific in recent years.
According to Variety’s sources, Joel Silver was fired for being verbally abusive to two female executives, including Amazon Studios’ Head of Marketing Sue Kroll and Amazon’s Head of Film, Streaming and Theatrical Courtenay Valenti. However, other sources say that Amazon is “retaliating against the producer after he pushed back on the studio’s calls to use artificial intelligence to finish a movie during the strike.“

Updated with statement from Silver’s rep: Iconic producer Joel Silver has been fired from the forthcoming Amazon film Play Dirty, Deadline can confirm. While the decision reportedly stemmed from alleged verbal abuse on Silver’s part toward studio execs over creative differences, Amazon has declined to comment.
The first of a number of projects in the works at Amazon centered on the Parker crime novels by Donald E. Westlake, which were written under the pen name Richard Stark, Play Dirty was at one point supposed to star Robert Downey Jr., sources said, but while he’s no longer involved in that capacity, with Mark Wahlberg now attached to star, Downey remains aboard to produce for Team Downey and had left the project well ahead of the fallout with Silver. The project was set to reunite Silver with writer-director Shane Black following their work together on such titles as The Nice Guys, Predator,...

For the past few years, Joel Silver has kept a relatively low profile, his most recent credit on the little-seen “SuperFly” remake of 2018. Still, the hard-charging producer behind some of the biggest hits of the ’80s and ’90s was attempting to mount a comeback. And his prospects looked promising with a series of feature film and TV projects at Amazon that were based on Donald E. Westlake’s Parker noir crime novels.
Alas, the Silver comeback has hit a snag. Sources say Amazon has fired the polarizing Hollywood figure from at least two films — one starring Mark Wahlberg, the other Jake Gyllenhaal — for being verbally abusive to two female executives. But sources close to Silver say Amazon is retaliating against the producer after he pushed back on the studio’s calls to use artificial intelligence to finish a movie during the strike. Yippee-Ki-Yay, Moviegoers! Die Hard will be back in theaters next week, just in time for Christmas. But it’s not a Christmas movie…is it? It’s debated year after year: does the 1988 action flick qualify as a holiday film or not? According to many, yes. The holiday is even mentioned in AMC’s write-up: “A New York City cop faces overwhelming odds when his Christmas visit to California is interrupted by a hostile invasion of his estranged wife’s office building.”
On the topic, we made our own case a few years ago that Die Hard is in fact a Christmas movie. Personally, I can’t take that stance. Die Hard qualifies as “Christmas-adjacent”, like Lethal Weapon, In Bruges and Eyes Wide Shut. Christmas is part of the films in one way or another – typically being set during the holiday season – but it’s not a big enough part...

The buddy cop genre was made popular in the 1980s with classic action comedies like 48 Hrs, Beverly Hills Cop, and Lethal Weapon. As action movies continued to dominate at the box office, the 90s saw a string of popular buddy cop movies surface. In 1998, Rush Hour was released, and it was a huge hit. Rush Hour follows the story of Lee (Jackie Chan), a by-the-book Hong Kong police inspector. When the Chinese Consul’s daughter is kidnapped, Lee teams up with loudmouthed LAPD detective, Carter (Chris Tucker). The movie was a box office success and spawned two sequels. However,...

Some beloved feature films will be jettisoned from Max at the end of September according to the streamer.
Streaming services removing content is just a fact of life. Oftentimes, one will seek out a movie that they swore was available to stream, only to realize it’s nowhere to be found. It can be annoying, but this is unfortunately just the way things are.
Recently, Warner Bros.’s own platform Max took away various popular movies that had been housed there such as the Lethal Weapon series and Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, leaving viewers with fewer options through which to check out such offerings.

Some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb. In Netflix‘s Obliterated, a team of decorated soldiers find themselves on the business end of a nasty hangover while trying to stop an impending disaster. Recovering from a night of drug-fueled debauchery is challenging on any front, but doing it while the survival of millions hangs in the balance? That’s what I call a rude awakening. Today, Netflix deployed a gallery of first-look images and a release date for Obliterated, a new high-octane action-comedy series from directors Jon Hurwitz (Cobra Kai) and Hayden Schlossberg (Cobra Kai).

William Shatner wasn't always Captain James T. Kirk. Before his breakout part, he starred in two episodes of "The Twilight Zone." The first, and more famous, was "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet." Shatner plays Bob Wilson, an airplane passenger with a fear of flying. Wilson has recently recovered from a mental breakdown and his sanity is seemingly in doubt again when he sees a gremlin messing with the plane's engines. Is the Gremlin just his illness and fear acting up? After failing to convince everyone else aboard of the monster's existence, he takes matters into his own hands.
Shatner wasn't the only future star on board this flight. The episode was directed by the late Richard Donner, future director of "The Omen," "Lethal Weapon," and "Superman." The irony is twofold. In a few short years, Shatner would star as the captain of a ship that flies a lot higher than 20,000 feet.

Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. If you have any questions or comments, or even suggestions of art or other great artists, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.

Exclusive: Keesha Sharp (Power Book II: Ghost) is set as a lead opposite Taye Diggs in BET+ true crime film series Love & Murder: Atlanta Playboy, from Mona Scott-Young of Monami Productions and Eric Tomosunas of Swirl Films. It is set to debut on BET+ later this year.
Courtney Miller will direct, based on Ron Stodghill’s book Redbone: Money, Malice and Murder in Atlanta. Gregory R. Anderson will pen the script.
Atlanta Playboy follows Lance (Diggs), a successful Atlanta businessman, renowned in equal measure for both revolutionizing the city’s 911 system, and his womanizing ways. When he is found murdered in his own home, questions and allegations abound as to who might have wanted him dead. An investigation into the murder is launched which reveals the truths and suspicions behind Lance’s professional and personal life. Was it a business rival, threatened by Lance’s bid for a big contract?...
