Last week, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. With the studio celebrating its 100th anniversary, we figured now would be an opportune time to look back at the studio Disney launched to distribute their more grown-up fare, the now shuttered Touchstone Pictures.
Jump back to 1983, when Disney put out a now obscure comedy called Trenchcoat, starring Airplane’s Robert Hayes and Superman’s Margot Kidder. A comic mystery, it was produced by Walt Disney Productions...

In 1988 Tom Cruise was arguably the biggest star in the world. Top Gun came out in 1986 and was the year’s top-grossing movie. It wasn’t only a hit – it was a cultural phenomenon, and Cruise became a rare kind of movie star. He was a sex symbol for the ladies, but the guys liked him too. Speaking personally, having been born in 1981, I vividly remember owning the VHS tape of Top Gun and playing it on a loop. Cruise was my first concept of a movie star; to kids like me, he was like a cool Big Brother-type figure. He was the guy we all wanted to be with him riding motorcycles, rocking fantastic hair and an attitude which was never too threatening while blasting awesome 80s rock music and having the girls go crazy for him. He was the man, and if any movie ever cemented his big-screen stardom,...

Exclusive: Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to take Puppy Bowl to another level as a live television event by simulcasting it across linear networks and streaming platforms from both sides of the merged company.
In its first post-merger edition, Puppy Bowl will run on its home network, Animal Planet, where it has been a staple for 19 years, as well as on TBS, the unscripted-leaning brand of the TNets, Discovery Channel as well as soon-to-be-combined Discovery+ and HBO Max.
Last year, Puppy Bowl Xviii streamed on Discovery+ in addition to its Animal Planet run; the event’s footprint has been vastly expanded this year by adding networks, TBS and Discovery, as well as a streamer, HBO Max, with wider reach.

Great Big Box Office Hits:
The comedy Three Men and a Baby, the erotic thriller Fatal Attraction, and the Eddie Murphy action comedy sequel Beverly Hills Cop II, and the Robin Williams vehicle Good Morning Vietnam were easily the four biggest hits of the year, box-office wise. The enduringly popular Moonstruck wasn't quite in their league in tickets sold back then but still very popular, rounding out the top five. The other top ten hits of that year were the acclaimed mobs vs feds costume drama The Untouchables, the now arguably forgotten comedies The Secret of My Success and Stakeout, and the buddy action movie Lethal Weapon...

Let me start off by saying this: I am keenly aware that Maximum Overdrive is not a very good movie at all. In fact, it's a downright terrible movie if you take into consideration its various plot holes and nonsensical conditions established in the film coupled with some very awkward performances and characters that couldn’t be more stereotypical if they tried.
But, for me, what ultimately saves Maximum Overdrive from itself is the fact that at the end of the day, the story as a concept is ridiculous fun, the action is over-the-top crazy with tons of destruction and explosions, and it just seems like director Stephen King had a helluva lot of fun making it (he has since admitted to being under the influence of drugs throughout production, which explains a lot). Despite its imperfections, I still adore this deeply flawed film and you have to admit, there...

The Stephen King series The Outsider is very much not a comedy but it will come to HBO on January 12 all the same.
The list of movies coming to HBO in January 2020 are surprisingly action-packed as well. John Wick...

A look at the pre-Grimm work of co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, a screenwriting partnership that’s lasted over thirty years…
A poker table in the late seventies, a bathroom in the mid-noughties… television shows have many birthplaces. Had screenwriters David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf not been introduced at a card game over thirty years ago, and had producer Todd Milliner not taken a 2006 shower in which he pondered what existing stories were in need of a modern update for TV, then Grimm might never have existed.
First, that poker game. Greenwalt and Kouf’s friendship began a couple of years before their first official screenwriting credit on 1982’s horror spoof Wacko, a job for which the pair were paid the princely sum of fifteen thousand dollars…

John Badham, director of film favorites such as “Saturday Night Fever,” “Wargames” and “Stakeout,” over a dozen other films and many more television shows, is coming out with a new book entitled, no surprises here, “John Badham on Directing.” Now a lot of “how to” books have crossed my desk, but this is something special for several reasons. One, he has reached out to other directors such as Martha Coolidge, Christopher Nolan, Paris Barkley, Oliver Stone and Steven Soderbergh (and a couple who are no longer with us such as John Frankenheimer and Sydney Pollack) for their stories, suggestions and insights.
It’s like being in a master class on directing from the best in the business, along with commentary from actors, cinematographers and producers. It covers everything from what you want out of storyboarding,
strategies behind effective action scenes and, most of all, getting the best possible performances from actors.

The star of Jaws and Close Encounters made another early film, but it never got the credit it was due. Its rerelease reminds us that the young actor really had something special
At 65, with the big hits well behind him and the star retinue long since dissipated, Richard Dreyfuss still burns with the righteous fire of the Hollywood player. He fixes me with a beady eye and says: "Acting is an ennobling experience and if it's something that you're capable of, you're lucky. I enjoyed and am proud of everything I ever did – except maybe two or three films whose names you'll never get from me. I am proud of my life and proud of my body of work."
These days, Dreyfuss cuts a very different figure from the bundle of nervous energy that made him a massive star in the early 70s, and one of the key faces of...

Veteran filmmaker John Badham is ready to get back on the feature saddle again. He’s in talks to take on In The Rough, written by Leslie Boehm (the man who’s given us Dante’s Peak, Daylight and The Darkest Hour). Rough is an action-adventure concerning a retired hunter, a female Red Cross employee and a CIA agent searching for priceless jewels in the Indian jungles. Adventure ensues [Moviehole].
Badham began his career in the early 70s directing television, both episodes and movies, until 1977, when he broke out as a film director with Saturday Night Fever. Since then he’s helmed a vast variety of entertainment, at least one of which you probably love. His films range from Short Circuit to WarGames to Stakeout to the Point Break-wannabee Drop Zone (which is a personal guilty pleasure).
In the mid-90s he gave us Nick of Time, a mildly interesting Johnny Depp...

Hey, we'd change the script if it meant that Robert Pattinson could be in our movie, too.
Madeleine Stowe, who once wallowed in sin with Kevin Costner in Tony Scott's "Revenge" and made Richard Dreyfuss' job harder in "Stakeout," is now closer than ever to making her longtime dream project a reality. "Unbound Captives" is an epic western that Stowe is set to write and direct (maybe she's trying to erase the memory of "Bad Girls?"), and Pattinson was attached to a role when the project was first announced back in 2009. The "Twilight" star might be too old for the role now ... but Stowe might be willing to make some changes to accommodate the years that have gone by.
"The character was conceptualized as an 18-year-old," Stowe acknowledged, but when asked if she would be willing to age up the role so...

Actor/Director Says He Got Script Notes From Clint Eastwood On Project, Talks Working With Ji-Woon Kim On 'The Last Stand' After early supporting roles in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "The Color of Money," "Platoon," "Stakeout" and "Good Morning, Vietnam," Forest Whitaker finally landed a leading role, winning Best Actor at Cannes in the process, in 1988's "Bird" the biopic of jazz legend Charlie Parker directed by Clint Eastwood. Nearly 25-years-on, it looks like the actor-director is finally returning to another jazz icon, stepping behind the camera this time, although enlisting the help of his old collaborator on the film. We caught up with Whitaker this week at the Marrakech Film Festival, and he revealed he's got two directorial projects on the way or in the works: "Better Angels," a project focusing on Ugandan child soldiers in which he'll also star, and "Getting To...

With a few notable exceptions such as Insidious and Paranormal Activity 3, it's been a dismal year at the multiplex for horror. So what are fans supposed to do, especially on this holiest of all holiday weekends, Halloween? Turn to television of course, where the likes of "The Walking Dead", "Dexter", "American Horror Story", "Supernatural", "The Vampire Diaries", and even "The Secret Circle" and BBC America's "Bedlam" are kicking all sorts of genre ass. And a new entry arrives this Friday, October 28th, vying for your attention: NBC's "Grimm". Is it worth your time considering everything else there is to choose from?
We say resoundingly, "Yes!" From the minds of Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt, "Grimm" is everything a fan of both police procedurals and monster movies could want -- with a healthy dose of fairy tale magic sprinkled in. Greenwalt worked on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Angel", "The X-Files...

NBC is gearing up to premiere its latest foray into genre programming on Friday, October 28th: "Grimm," a new police procedural inspired by the classic Grimms’ fairy tales that centers around Portland homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli; Turn The Beat Around, Camera Obscura), who discovers he is descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as "Grimms" that have been charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures of the world.
As Nick struggles to hide the dangers of his newfound calling from his fiancée, Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch; "Quarterlife"), and his partner, Hank (Russell Hornsby; "Fear Itself," Stuck), he becomes ever more entrenched in the ancient rivalries and alliances of the Grimm world.
With help from his confidant, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell, "Prison Break"), a reformed Grimm creature himself, Nick must navigate through the forces of a larger-than-life mythology while facing off with Hexenbiests, Blutbads and...

Steve Carell is no slouch. Since leaving his breakout gig at 'The Office,' the actor has lined up about a dozen projects, has finished 'Crazy, Stupid, Love,' which is due July 29, is filming 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World' and has roles in 'Great Hope Springs' and 'Burt Wonderstone,' both in pre-production. Now, Universal has salvaged another project for him by acquiring rights to an untitled FBI wedding comedy out of turnaround from Warner Bros.
According to Variety, the studio has tapped Phil Alden Robinson ('Field of Dreams' and 'The Sum of All Fears') to write the project, and Carell will be one of the producers through his Warner-based Carousel Productions.
The logline on the project hasn't been revealed, but it's believed to fall somewhere between the 1987 Richard Dreyfuss-Emilio Estevez 'Stakeout...

There is probably no comic leading man in Hollywood right now hotter than Steve Carell. It seems each week there is another project announced with the actor/comedian attached and this week is no different. Variety reports that Universal has picked up an untitled "FBI wedding" comedy in turnaround from Warner Bros. as a potential vehicle for the funnyman. Details are under wraps for now, but the film is said to fall somewhere between that 1987 Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez movie "Stakeout" and "My Best Friend's Wedding," which is two of the oddest comparison points for a project in recent…...

Every once in a while a trailer comes out that makes you think to yourself "oh my goodness that looks like nonsense... I Can't Wait To See It!"
In my social circles that has been the reaction to the trailers and commercials for "Piranha 3D" (which is hitting AMC Theatres everywhere this weekend)! To us, the film looks like a throwback to the great cheesy horror/gore movies of the 80's much like "The Expendables" is for 80's action films. It also looks like it aims to deliver that kind of fun.
But aside from the beastly little fishies with the big teeth, a lot of us are also looking forward to seeing this particular cast in action together. Most of them have been huge at one point (and for good reason) but these days don't often get the recognition they deserve to get.

Today marks the official opening of the new Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy "The Other Guys" at AMC Theatres everywhere!
Cop comedies area staple in Hollywood and for good reason. So with the film opening today I thought it would be a good opportunity for us to look back at some of my favorite all time cop comedies and share the with you here.
So let's dive into it:
#1 - Police Academy (1984)
Ok, just to be clear here I'm not talking about the 49 sequels that followed, but rather the original masterpiece that still makes me laugh to this day whenever I have the chance to see it:
"The city is in need of more police officers, so the mayor decides to alter the requirements for acceptance into the Police Academy. Among the new cadets is Moses Hightower, a gentle giant who was a florist. Leslie Barbara, who is tired of being picked on.

That master juggler of the high concept and the low budget Larry Cohen has had a bit of a late surge of telecommunications-themed thrillers. The latest example is Messages Deleted, and you can check out the trailer here.Cohen of course, is the director of It's Alive, Return to Salem's Lot and Q The Winged Serpent, but he's as well known for his screenplays as his talent behind a camera. Phone Booth was directed by Batman villain Joel Schumacher, and Cellular by former stuntman David R Ellis, who went on to Snakes on a Plane and The Final Destination. Time will tell if such dizzy heights await Rob Cowan; lately a producer by trade, although he's credited as First Ad on Stakeout and Cocktail.Messages Deleted stars Deborah Unger, whose presence doesn't help this not feel a bit like The Game, and Matthew Lillard as the screenplay writer (and college lecturer,...

Wow, two gunslinger movies in one day? I must be in heaven! Okay, so maybe Madeleine Stowe’s “Unbound Captives” doesn’t really sound all that much like a gunslinger movie, but it’s got bloodthirsty Commanches, a mysterious cowboy badass, and it’s got a damsel in distress. Sounds pretty good to me. The film will star Hugh Jackman as the (probably) dashing cowboy who comes to the rescue of Rachel Weisz, whose husband has been killed and her children abducted by a Commanche war party. The film will be set in 1859, cause, well, Commanche war parties in 2009 would be kind of weird. The film will mark the directorial debut of Madeleine Stowe. Yes, Madeleine Stowe. You know, the actress? She was in a ton of movies in the ’90s, including “Unlawful Entry”, “Twelve Monkeys”, “The Last of the Mohicans”, and the “Stakeout” films. She was also in “Revenge” with Kevin Costner.
