Three decades ago, execs at pioneering kids network Nickelodeon realized that wanted to do more than just air old comedy repeats (“Dennis the Menace”) and Canadian imports (“You Can’t Do That on Television”). But this was the early days of cable, and there were no budgets.
That’s how the network’s first game show, “Double Dare,” came to be produced at the local PBS station in Philadelphia. “Nickelodeon couldn’t do [shows] in La and they couldn’t do them in New York because the cost was too prohibitive,” recalled host Marc Summers. “They found out that the PBS station in Philly, Whyy, wanted to open up a production wing, so the station said, ‘If you help us, we’ll help you. Would you put ads in the trade magazines and say, ‘Hey, we had this great experience down in Philly,’ so other people will come knocking on our...

To this day, there has not been a game show that has topped Nickelodeon in the 90s. They had Guts, Family Double Dare, and Nick Arcade, but none of them reached quite the level of awesomeness that was Legends of The Hidden Temple. What wasn't to love? You had a giant head named Olmec quizzing you on history while you battled against other children for supremacy and a shot to enter "the temple."
Get in and out of the temple in 90 seconds (which was nothing short of a miracle) and you won a cruise for your family. Of course, it wasn't that easy. You could be kidnapped by temple guards who could only be stopped by pendents, and you had to solve super tough puzzles that most adults may not be able to solve, let alone kids! It was a show so inspiring that I have a Purple Parrots t-shirt in my closet right now.

Recently, it was announced that Nickelodeon would be launching a new channel dedicated solely to it’s 90’s programming. And most of use who grew up during that time period with that programming could not be more excited! So it got me thinking, what Nickelodeon 90’s shows should be remade? Granted, most of these would be in need of a technological update but they were either so fun, poignant, or engrossing, that they deserve a remake.
Clarissa Explains It All
Clarissa was great to grow up with. Starting in her pre-teens and continuing through her late teen years, we saw her go through nearly everything. From birthdays and friendships to getting her drivers license and sneaking out. We saw her rebellious phases change and grow while she figured herself out like we all do during out formative years. What made the show unique was her reporting on herself style. She broke the fourth wall often,...

The recent rise of Dean Ambrose has coincided with the return of moments of messiness and sloppiness that have led to the humiliation of The Authority’s Randy Orton, Kane and Seth Rollins. First, Rollins caught green slime to the face. Then, Ambrose pulled ketchup and mustard bottles from his pant pockets and douse The Viper and the Devil’s Favorite Demon in the condiments. With his rivals looking like survivors of Nickelodeon’s Family Double Dare, Ambrose has clearly struck a nerve with the most powerful faction in sports-entertainment and his torment of them is likely far from over. Perhaps whipped cream or cheese sauce is in Triple H and Stephanie McMahon’s future. You know, just to complete the concession stand assault.

Remember Marc Summers? The producer of food network shows like Restaurant: Impossible, most people from my generation probably know Summers better as the host of the Nickelodeon television game show Double Dare (and in later incarnations, Super Sloppy Double Dare, Family Double Dare and Double Dare 2000). The show was an 1980′s classic, combining trivia […]

Green monkeys! Orange iguanas! If these unnaturally occurring animal-color combinations don’t send chills down your spine, you weren’t a child of the ‘90s.
Funny or Die has posted a fake trailer for Legends of the Hidden Temple: The Movie, a would-be action flick that finds a gruff former contestant drinking away his sorrows as he contemplates returning (a la Lost) into the cruel hands of Olmec the Terrifying. “You think you’re going to be all right, just ’cause you have a guide,” muses the faded former Red Jaguar as memories of a distant Kirk Fogg appear.

Double Dare: who can forget it? It was the kiddie game show that put children through challenges such as throwing a football to your partner while blindfolded (oh, and your partner is blindfolded, too) or trying to assemble a Mr. Potato Head toy in less than 20 seconds (tougher than it sounds). There were obstacle courses whose stations included a slide slathered with chocolate sauce, and “The Icy Trike,” in which a luckless young person had to negotiate a baby-size tricycle across a surface slicked with vegetable oil.

Good Charlotte choose to film a Funny Or Die video to support their song "Last Night". Benji Madden, Joel Madden, Paul Thomas and Dean Butterworth play "Family Double Dare", taking part in the classic Nickelodeon game show's goofy challenges like "Breakfast in Bed" and "Ready, Set, Go".
The boys are in the red team a.k.a. Cowabunga! and the Twins, facing off the blue team a.k.a. the Cheese Cutters. Unfortunately, they don't make it to the finale and are forced to watch the blue team from the sideline. Hosting the game show is former "Double Dare" host Marc Summers.
"This video takes place in the '90s and we were all '90s kids, so we know it pretty well," guitarist Benji said in a statement. "This was one of our favorite shows growing up. I always wanted to go on 'Family Double Dare,' and...

There's an awful lot of Nickelodeon-related nostalgia in the air at the moment. Not only has the network announced that it will begin airing a late-night block of '90s classics like "Clarissa Explains It All" and "The Adventures of Pete & Pete,"but the men of have resurrected the channel's "Family Double Dare" in a video for their new song "Last Night," a clip that premiered on FunnyOrDie.com on Monday.
The video features a lovingly reconstructed version of the classic game show's set and finds the bandmembers participating in a number of the program's extra sloppy challenges — including a handful of entries on the famous game-ending obstacle course. Also appearing in the clip, in a starring role, is former "Family Double Dare" host Marc Summers,...
