With the premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug rapidly approaching, the airwaves and Internet tubes have begun to fill with those all-important featurettes that films depend upon to remind us of their existence. In the latest featurette from Peter Jackson’s team, we get a tour of the house of Beorn, the big bear/man who will figure heavily into at least a portion of the second Hobbit feature.
Those who have read The Hobbit will remember the incident with Beorn – himself a sort of prototype to Tom Bombadil, whose subplot was unfortunately cut from the Lord of the Rings films. Beorn is a shape-shifter who turns himself from bear to man and back again. He extends his hospitality and his help to the dwarves and their halfling companion, but he’s still a bear and as a bear…well, you want to be careful about turning your back on him.

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Resurrections: Orpheus' own; his myth as Jean Anouilh' play, Eurydice; Anouilh's play into Bruno Podalydès' video adaptation, continuously projected throughout Vous n'avez encore rien vu's screening room in a kind of mystic real-time subtending the latter's recursive chronologies; and this Podalydès adaptation into Resnais' own adaptation, or rather his characters' own, as they recite the lines of the Podalydès video they're watching, or rather the Anouilh play they've all performed, to relive old performances, or rather, as usual in Resnais, to relive the lives of characters that have never been lived in the first place. One actor's performance will in turn be resurrected by another's of the same. Either they ain't seen nothin' or they've seen it all.
Story Of Your Life!
Very academic, except that Vous, like all of Resnais' films, works opposite to academic illustrations by problematizing its "source" text only within the text's terms.

You can keep your FIFA 14s and your Pes 2014, because the end of this month sees the single biggest football release of the year for gamers with the arrival of Si Games’ behemoth management simulation Football Manager 2014. Once more, the curtain will drop on the latest addition, bursting with new features and promising hours of uninterrupted frustration as your star players question your motivation and demand moves, while Leighton Orient unfeasibly stick 4 past you at home against your first team in the League Cup.

Friday night (Oct. 11), PBS' "Great Performances" airs "Henry V," the final Shakespeare adaptation in "'The Hollow Crown" series.
It follows "Richard II" and "Henry IV (Parts One and Two)," but these new film versions of the Bard of Avon's historical dramas about English monarchs weren't shot in order. Right after "Richard II" ended, "Henry V" swung into production.
That meant Tom Hiddleston -- the scene-stealing star of "Thor" and "The Avengers" -- had to play the mature King Henry V before he played the immature Prince Hal in the two "Henry IV" plays.
Hiddleston's first day on location was also a doozy.
To set the scene, it's 1415, and Henry V is on a quest to conquer France, to which he believes he has an ancestral claim. He and his army laid siege to the walled French town of Harfleur in mid-August, and now it's late September, and Henry has had about enough.

After successfully battling ovarian cancer for the second time and sharing her journey on People.com, Diem Brown is back to blogging. This time around, she will not only share updates on her own life, but about competing on her new show, MTV's The Challenge: Rivals II. Twitter is a really amazing way to stay up-to-date on everything from your friends' lives to national and local news, from breaking stories to entertainment. Twitter can also have the power of immediate communication with people you have never met. Sometimes the comments can be nasty, but sometimes Twitter can bring strangers together in magical ways!

Dog Soldiers successfully breaks the traditional werewolf template while staying firmly rooted in the genre. Tonights feature is also one of only two decent werewolf movies (Ginger Snaps (2000) is the other) to be made in the past 30 years. Once more it is probably the most impressive English language horror movie to not receive a Us theatrical release. Beyond its subgenre qualities Dog Soldiers is an homage to many classic horror movies including The Evil Dead (1981) and Night of the Living Dead (1968).

Warning: If you have yet to watch Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 10 premiere, hit the nearest exit. Everyone else, proceed onward…
Although it’s looking grim for Richard as the two-hour Grey’s Anatomy season premiere kicks off — seriously, does it get any grimmer than lying face down in a pool of water after being electrocuted in a hospital boiler room? — is he the doctor who actually winds up in the morgue? If you haven’t seen the episode yet, read on and find out! (If you have seen it, read on, anyway, and try to act surprised.)

I might not be the biggest fan of the superhero franchise genre, but I continue to be a big fan of Joss Whedon. Having finally been given his due by the Hollywood establishment, Whedon has taken every opportunity to advocate for stronger female roles and more original content, ripping on the current Hollywood tendency to bring back franchise after franchise without actually taking the time to develop new ideas. In a recent interview with EW, Whedon said that he’d like to put some original ideas into practice, once he’s finished with Avengers: Age of Ultron.
When asked about what future properties Whedon has ‘always wanted to play with,’ the director had this to say:
There’s probably a dozen. It’s very important I don’t do that. It’s very important that we start creating new content again. We can only build on nostalgia so much before...

In one medium or another, Jim Carrey has been making the world a more enjoyable place for nearly three decades. The Golden Globe winning actor has powerfully expressed his unique life mantra through film, television, art and now children's books.
How Roland Rolls (out today) is deeper than your average children's book as it ponders profound life questions while always providing pure entertainment. Something, when you think about it, all of Carrey's work has impressively accomplished. Although that comes as no surprise given how thoughtful the multi-hyphenate is about all of his choices.
ETonline recently spoke with Jim Carrey about creating his first-ever children's book, working with his daughter Jane, the heartfelt reasons that motivated Roland's inception and how he believes its existence can improve our future.
ETonline: What inspired you to write a children's book?

Somehow, I survived my six-movie day yesterday at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. My mind was amazed to have held firm throughout the day, but my body was basically operating on fumes if today was any indication. I stayed alert and awake through the four films I watched, but there were a couple of moments where I was thankful for the Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline for offering an espresso chocolate milkshake. Anything to keep me buzzing. (Sorry for all the buzzing, Fantastic Fest friends. It’s the only way I can stay awake!) As you’ll see from the end of this post, this was my last day at the festival proper. Before I get into what I saw today, I just want to say exactly how much damn fun I’ve had these past few days. I met a lot of Twitter friends in person and, if I’m lucky,...

All you need is faith and trust, friends. Don’t you want to fly to Neverland? It’s just past the second star to the right, straight on till morning! Ok, maybe Josh and Gabe aren’t exactly Peter Pan and Tinker Bell (or vice versa, though they haven’t decided just yet which role suits each of them best), but Disney’s 1953 version of J.M. Barrie’s classic children’s story Peter Pan is the topic of discussion on today’s all-new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema! Once more, the dynamic duo are guest-free, but they found plenty to talk about regarding the film’s presentation of Native Americans and women, as well as the crocodile with a clock in its stomach, and even more. And you just might hear Gabe admit to–gasp!–agreeing with Josh! Wholeheartedly! No fooling! Just listen to the new show to find out!

That’s right people, you read the headline correctly, the genius and poetic beauty of Shakespeare and his iambic pentameter has found its way into a galaxy far, far away, and not a single Jawa or droid has been overlooked, resulting in this fabulous, albeit awfully familiar, book.
William Shakespeare’s Star Wars is the latest mash-up offering from the independent publishing company aptly named Quirk Books, and is the creation of mega Star Wars and Shakespeare fan, Ian Doescher. Quirk is a company that has been around for some time, and if you are like me, part pop culture fanboy, part literary book-worm, then there is no doubt that you have come across a book or two from Quirk. If you have never heard of Quirk Books then shame on you, because if you love anything to do with sci-fi, zombies, steam-punk or any other fanboy troupes,...

Excuses come easy: it was Man City, a key man was missing, there haven’t been any signings… But the truth of the matter is, even with those considered and disregarded, Newcastle United should have performed better against Manchester City in last night’s season opener. Regardless of context or competition, one shot on target in 90 minutes is a dismal return, and the manner in which City sliced through the Magpies on the break should be as much a matter for concern as it will be a positive for other teams looking to counter-attack in subsequent games.
The defeat was not necessarily hard to take for Newcastle fans, who remained in reasonably good spirits after the game – having written the fixture off as something of a foregone conclusion – but as with all games, it is the manner of that defeat that should provoke thought. Once more Newcastle...

Maybe there’s no magical secret to having the high ratings CBS regularly trounces other networks with. From where I’m sitting, their most successful shows have at least one common factor: making sure that somebody gets killed every week. It works for NCIS, it works for Survivor and Big Brother (with exile being about as close to death as reality TV allows…for now) and it’s worked well enough for Under the Dome to earn it a second season. Cable dramas like The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad might get all the attention for the violence inherent to their vision, but death is no stranger to the FCC-regulated networks either.
All these other shows have natural methods for filling the spaces left by those characters that wind up biting the dust, the transition being more or less organic depending on the premise. So long as there’s murder in the real world,...

Loosely based* on the classic real-life story of the forty-seven Ronin, Keanu Reeves will be returning to the action/genre for which we love him in the long-awaited 47 Ronin.
The film has been pushed back a number of times in recent months, and was originally to head into theatres towards the end of last year. Universal seem to have finally settled on a Christmas Day release in the States this year. And now they’ve launched a very impressive first trailer, via Apple, along with some great new posters.

Today, Francis Ford Coppola is celebrated, and justly so, for his work on The Godfather Trilogy, and being one of the 1970s wunderkinds who helped change the look of movies. But he’s also the same guy who cut his teeth on Roger Corman low budget genre offerings and he seems to have come full circle with Twixt.
Once more Coppola does it all: writing, directing, producing. Unfortunately, the results are visually stylish and emotionally empty. If the lead character is a bargain basement Stephen King, this is Coppola’s shoestring budget The Shining and neither looks particularly good.

Not so long ago, walking around with any kind of hand-held computer was a sure-fire sign you were either struggling for friends, or a visitor from the Enterprise in the future. It wasn’t cool.
But now, with the tablet age driving sales of iPads and any number of alternatives, portal computing isn’t just a right, it’s a daily necessity, and geeks are finding more and more smart ways to make a statement with their tablets. Much like emblazoning your skateboard with stickers, or wearing sloganed T-shirts were the ways younger generations in the past showed their various allegiances and fandoms, we’re seeing it happen more and more with gadget accessories and user modifications.
So why not celebrate the best opportunities to shout out your love of geekdom? Here are five of the very best ways to make your tablet even more geeky…

It’s no secret that both Graham and I are huge fans of American Dad, it’s long surpassed Family Guy in its ability to make us laugh. So when Graham sent me this Deadline article that declared that American Dad was moving to TBS we both said…”huh?”
American Dad has been renewed for a 10th season on Fox which will begin airing on September 29th, but once that is completed the show will move to TBS for a 15 episode 11th season in 2014.
“American Dad! is a great fit for TBS, a favorite of comedy fans who like smart, irreverent humor with ample doses of biting wit and skewering satire,” said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movie, in announcing the deal. “We look forward to welcoming Seth MacFarlane and the rest of his team as they bring this iconic show to TBS.

The upfront appeal of "Kingdom Hearts" is fairly obvious; you've got a bunch of Final Fantasy-esque characters running around with Disney characters. Each new installment offers the chance to interact with the personalities from yet another classic Disney animated feature. Though Kingdom Hearts 2 demonstrated that anything related to Disney was up for grabs, including live action content, as was the case with the Tron and Pirates of the Caribbean levels.
So given Disney's recent acquisition of the Star Wars license, along with their highly successful string of Marvel Comics movies, how does Luke Skywalker and Iron Man fighting alongside Sora and the rest of gang sound? Turns out, it's definitely something Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura would like as well.
In an interview conducted at Japan Expo in Paris by Finaland that VG247 recently highlighted, Nomura is apparently totally into the idea. But not surprisingly, it's also...

Sometimes making a game is more about the process than it is about the end result, but it helps when the end result is a really good game.
"One of our engineers that was on the core team was referencing the one art class that he took in college. 'One of our assignments we were looking at this artist who was doing very abstract color prints and I just feel like there's a game in there somewhere.'"
And with that, the seed of "Color Zen" was planted.
For most people, matching colors together sounds like one of the world's simplest tasks; something that they have been doing since they were in diapers. Taking that kind of a basic human skill and turning it into a game that is both compelling and challenging is no easy task, but that's exactly what Large Animal Games' latest release, "Color Zen" does.

FEARnet is proud to present brand new fiction from Nightmare Magazine. Once a month, we'll be featuring a story from Nightmare’s current issue. This month's selection is “And Yet, Her Eyes” by Brit Mandelo. Please tell us what you think and enjoy!
And Yet, Her Eyes

Sasha came back from Kandahar in pieces, a sack of broken glass in the shape of a woman. She knew her edges stuck out at hard, invisible angles, waiting for an unwary hand to snag and recoil, so she kept her eyes closed through the flight to Chicago, immersed in civilian travel-murmur but not part of it; when the flight attendant offered to help her with her bags after landing, she said no thank you. She read his nod as relieved, the quick turn from her on his heel more so—thought about making a remark, I don’t bite and it isn’t contagious,...

After decades of producing the most hilarious TV ads in memory, including the infamous Tango Slap, the brand are back on TV, sharing the pure intesity locked inside every can. And this time, they’re expressing that orange explosion in an advert that transforms ever drinker into a cartoonish, shouting bodybuilder. Once more it’s top form from the marketing team, and like the Slap, you have to suspect it’s going to be copied all over Britain.
Who needs eloquence when you can just shout Argh?!

We're back in London on 10th July for our latest pub quiz. Details here...
Our London Movie Pub Quiz is returning on 10th July 2013. Once more, it's a pub quiz for those of you who hate answering questions about Coronation Street and sport. It’s a film quiz, possibly with a TV round (you never know) with as many questions as we can squeeze into the evening, and it starts promptly at 7pm.
Important: Please Read We still have a slightly smaller venue than we used to have (it’s a better venue, but a smaller one), which means numbers are restricted. We will try and squeeze in as many people as we can, but please bear with us. It might take us longer than usual to get back to you, and apologies in advance to anyone we disappoint.

In an interview with TotalFilm, Joss Whedon revealed a previously unknown piece of Firefly trivia. In his own words:
"I had planned to do an episode of Firefly with Amy [Acker] and Alexis [Denisof] and James Marsters as part of a travelling Shakespeare troupe. Because it's sort of a staple of the John Ford westerns is that there's always that over-the-top theatre guy, and I thought it would be terrific having them trying to put on a play in the cargo bay. But, I don't know if you know this, but we were cancelled; so I didn't get to do it."
Fred and Wesley and Spike performing Shakespeare on Serenity? Best. Hypothetical. Episode. Ever.
Firefly meets Angel meets Shakespeare? A world of yes.
For Whedonites, this would have been insanely awesome, because not only did Firefly manage to establish itself as one of the best shows ever (if not even the very...

One thing that’s always guaranteed at Download festival is a diverse spread of musical tastes – the fest has attracted criticism in the past for including acts that plainly don’t fit the bill, like Lethal Bizzle (who was unceremoniously pelted with free rice pudding,) Pendulum and Chase and Status recently.
But Andy Copping knows how to cater for diverse tastes, and aside from a few well-publicised missteps, the organiser tends to cook up a good blend for the June festival, offering new bands, niche bands and mega-bands on the same schedule.
And this year, Copping got it spot on, pulling in three huge headliners – Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Rammstein – all falling firmly under the spectacle banner, and each promising high-energy, explosive sets to top off three busy days of music.
Like most years, the weather Gods conspired to wrap Donington in a halo of poor weather,...

Hey gang, we’re back! This is my favorite episode of Pretty Little Liars yet (of the two I’ve seen) and I think it’s all because this episode features a parrot and a dojo. Those two things speak to me. Anyway, let’s get down to it.
The girls are noshing at a coffee house named after a Hitchcock film.Where I grew up in Delaware we just had a place called the Brew-ha-ha. Alas for me…
Hannah (or Hanna? Who is she supposed to be? Saoirse Ronan?) is worried about her mom. The girls are arguing over who the lady in the long black veil was. Also, they are still arguing over whether or not Allison is dead or not. You would think a good autopsy would straighten that all out.
Creepy Mona shows up and whines about not being cool enough to join their girl gang.

Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy and Richard Linklater bring the story of Jesse and Celine up to date with Before Midnight. Here's our review...
Last week, I interviewed Man Of Steel writer David S Goyer. I bring this up because he said in our chat that the reason third films in a series tend to be the weakest is that people tend to have used up their best ideas by that point. A not unreasonable argument. Richard Linkater, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, though, prove that's not the case. The secret ingredient that these three deploy is time: by waiting nearly a decade, more ideas come forth, and a far more satisfying film is the end result.
With that said, there's little point even trying to pretend that I didn't go into Before Midnight yearning, aching for it to be brilliant. Richard Linklater's previous two films in the series,...

★★★★☆ Before Midnight (2013) is the final part of an extraordinary trilogy, directed by Richard Linklater and starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. For those who have watched the previous two films, Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), it will feel as though you have grown and aged with the two central characters, Jesse and Celine. It's a clever concept, brilliant exploited by Linklater and his team. Yet, for those lacking this background, Before Midnight also stands alone as a film about love, loyalty and commitment. In Before Sunrise, Parisian Celine and American Jesse are both 23 when they meet on a train travelling through Europe.
Jesse persuades his fellow passenger to disembark and spend the day with him in Vienna. They chat, laugh and fall in love. When it is time to part they promise to meet again in six months. In Before Sunset, nine years later, it transpires that they never met again.

Once more totally disregarding the film’s popular tagline, “There can be only one guy who should be played by Ryan Reynolds, given that we are afraid of actual Scottish people,” the Highlander reboot has lost erstwhile star Ryan Reynolds. The Wrap reports that the actor has exited the long-gestating film for unspecified reasons, but which likely have to do with watching the attempts of so many writers and directors wither and perish around him—and all the while Reynolds is bound by destiny to just keep going while listening to whatever the modern equivalent of a sad Queen song ...

Joss Whedon is a man of many talents. He’s written and directed some of my favourite TV shows and films of all time, with his latest film, Much Ado About Nothing, opening over the weekend on our shores. So when the possibility arose to attend BAFTA’s Joss Whedon: A Life in Pictures on Friday night, I naturally jumped at the opportunity.
Of all of the people in the industry, Whedon’s work has had the greatest influence on me. I grew up on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and have had nothing but love for everything I’ve seen Whedon do since then.
Talking to a sold-out audience at BAFTA’s Princess Anne Theatre in Piccadilly, interviewed by the BBC’s Francine Stock, the evening started at the beginning, with his childhood.

During Electronic Arts’ E3 2013 press conference this afternoon a PopCap spokesperson kicked off the event by first announcing that EA has converted a version of Plants vs. Zombies into a shooter, and then revealing that Peggle 2 will be released later this year.
The entire Peggle 2 announcement consisted of the spokesman yelling out “Peggle 2″, jumping in the air, and the “Ode to Joy” music playing while the lights when dark. He then ran off the E3 stage without another word.
That is literally all we know at this point, as nothing else was said during the EA’s E3 2013 press conference. Once more details are announced, including what platforms it is coming to, we will update this post.

Barry Manilow says that even if he'd been the only person watching "Smash," he was determined to hang with it.
The pop-music icon will spend most of his summer prepping the relaunch of "Harmony," a stage show about a wartime singing group that he and longtime creative partner Bruce Sussman first produced in 1997. An extensively revised version opens at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre in September, and Manilow appreciates the show-mounting struggles the characters on NBC's recently ended Broadway drama "Smash" faced.
"It's been a very tough road for this beautiful show," Manilow tells Zap2it of "Harmony," maintaining it was "never, ever" because of the content. "It was always because of investors and producers, all the people you need to deal with when you're trying to raise $15 million to $18 million and get to New York.

Blind Detective (Johnnie To, Hong Kong)
Out Of Competition
After the Peckinpah-ian hard-boiled detectives of Drug War and the mist and cold of Northern China, back to another fantasy detective, or rather ex-detective (Andy Lau) paired with a devoted and sentimental woman cop (Sammy Cheng). Is Johnnie To building a personal collection of freak ex-cops? The previous one was "mad" (Mad Detective [San Tam], 2007), this one is blind, yet the two characters share the same capacity to mentally witness and re-enact the circumstances of the murder cases they inquire upon. And the same "theory": if you want to understand how "it" really happened, live it. Like scriptwriters who would examine one option after another of a scenario, and then play out the scenes to test them. Yet this time, To and his Milky Way gang let themselves go wilder in the blending of thriller, action, comedy (if not romcom), burlesque and over the top fantasy.

★★☆☆☆ Opening the Un Certain Regard section of the 66th Cannes Film Festival comes Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring (2013), a teen crime movie/wannabe satire based on the true story of a gang of over-privileged kids (with serious entitlement issues) who burgled a succession of Hollywood celebrity abodes several years back. Marc (Israel Broussard) is the new kid at school befriended by über-popular Rebecca (Katie Chang), who has a distinct taste for taking stuff that doesn't belong to her. The pair graduate from boosting the odd misplaced handbag to stealing cars and cleaning out the homes of A-listers when they're off partying.
Over time, Mark and Rebecca assemble a rag-tag group of fashionista 'gangstas', including Nicki (British actress Emma Watson), Chloe (Claire Julien) and Sam (Taissa Farmiga); a pseudo family home-schooled on pseudo philosophy leached from the banal The Secret. Superman is a science fiction story. What else can you say about the sole survivor of a doomed planet coming to live on Earth? As a result, some of the best stories about the Man of Steel have been science fiction in nature so it’s a wonder that it has taken this long before one of his confrontations with fellow alien Brainiac was brought to the screen. The feature films keep reusing Lex Luthor and General Zod, ignoring the computer construct from the distant world of Colu, who has captured specimen cities from countless worlds, including one from Krypton.
Thankfully, the folk at Warner Animation have recognized his incredible potential, first by reimagining him as a closer part of the mythos in their Superman: the Animated Series and now in Superman Unbound. Today, Global TV was expected to announce that our beloved Bomb Girls was being cancelled after only two seasons.

Some internet genius got ahold of the email addresses of some Global executives, and we pled with them to give some closure, give us just one more glimpse of characters we’ve come to love.

We all knew it would end like this. We all knew what was coming. We all knew the inevitability of how this would eventually all turn out.
And I am sooo not ready for it.
What an episode. What a show! And still two new episodes remain. I’m not sure I can take it. But, as your fearless recapper, I’ll certainly try.
Our scene opens in the swamps of Dagobah. Young Spartacus Skywalker seeks out a short, wizened old puppet for sage wisdom and advice. The withered, wise old creature has a question for you, Spartacus Skywalker:
Wizened Creature: Who your father is know you?
Spartacus: Uhh, the mailman?
Wizened Creature: Batiatus your father is.
Spartacus: Nooooooo!!!!!!!!
Funnily, in a roundabout way, Spartacus gives Batiatus credit for having shaped and created the man and leader he has become, but I’m getting ahead of my self.
We do actually open in a swamp,...
