It might be hard to believe, but it has been 30 years since the world lost one of the most beloved screen presences in modern times, John Candy. And while we can honor his too-short life and career by watching some of his greatest movies, we’ll never get to experience what his children did. But they are at least letting fans in on their personal feelings for their father, who died on March 4th, 1994.
Posting on her personal Instagram, John Candy’s eldest daughter Jennifer shared a photo of the two with the caption, “30 years ago today … feels like both a lifetime with and without you . Miss you and love you always”, along with a heart emoji. Jennifer had previously said, “He was your everyday kind of guy and a great dad and very lovable…Very much similar to characters that he was on film.”

Annette Bening is an actor’s actor. Like many of the greats before her, she began her career in the theatre. Through the 80s, she quietly compiled a library of rich, complex characters before making her Tony-nominated broadway debut in 1987’s “Coastal Disturbances.”
Bening then made her well deserved transition over to Hollywood with John Hughes’ “The Great Outdoors.” The film didn’t perform as well as hoped, nor did Milos Forman’s “Valmont” which was released the following year, but they both paved the way for Bening’s eventual Oscar-nominated breakout as Myra Langtry in Stephen Frears’ “The Grifters.”
She got particularly close to Oscar gold with “American Beauty” in 2000. Annette bagged the BAFTA and SAG award for her iconic portrayal of the colourfully volatile wife-in-crisis, Carolyn Burnham. She lost to Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) though, who had edged her out at the Globes.

The episode of The Test of Time covering Silent Night, Deadly Night was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Wading through the many aspects of a movie to decide if it stands the Test of Time is one of the fun parts of this journey. Often times, we’ve looked at classics that are genuinely seen as good in most aspects and decide if it was good just for its era or if it was able to transcend its place in time and still be a good time today. Last year we looked at Christmas Evil, a movie that still is underseen, but is a true holiday classic. While Black Christmas is probably on the Mount Rushmore of both Slashers And Christmas Horror and doesn’t require a re-evaluation, what about Silent Night,...

Update: Variety is reporting that the Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks John Candy documentary will likely be picked up by Amazon’s Prime Video, with the comedy said to be in negotiations for the film. Colin Hanks will be directing the documentary, with Reynolds on board as a producer. Hanks, whose father Tom Hanks memorably co-starred with the late comic legend in Splash and Volunteers (which also starred Hanks’ future wife Rita Wilson), apparently has the full corporation of the Candy family. This includes his widow, Rose and their two children, Jen and Chris. The film will reportedly contain home videos and never seen footage from the archive, as well as interviews with Candy’s friends and family. No release date is set yet, although given that John Candy is a Canadian icon, maybe a fall TIFF debut is in the cards?

Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire a John Candy documentary from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds, TheWrap has confirmed.
Hanks, son of Tom Hanks and star of “Life in Pieces,” “Orange County” and “A Friend of the Family,” will direct the project while Reynolds, star of “Deadpool,” “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project,” will produce alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The documentary feature will explore John Candy’s life and career, including starring roles in “The Great Outdoors,” “Spaceballs,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Uncle Buck” and “Cool Runnings.” The actor was on the verge of establishing himself as a comic actor who could also handle dramatic roles in weightier fare like “Only the Lonely” and Oliver Stone’s “JFK” when he died in 1994 of a heart attack at the age of 43.

The late comedian John Candy is getting the documentary treatment from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds.
Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire an untitled film that Hanks has been quietly directing. Reynolds — who, like Candy, hails from Canada — is producing alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The film will explore the life and legacy of the iconic funnyman Candy, who died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 43. But insiders say the film will go beyond the persona and delve into the inner life that Candy kept private off-screen. With the full support of Candy’s widow, Rose, and their two children, Jen and Chris, Hanks will utilize never-before-seen home videos, archives and interviews with the family to explore the man behind the movie star. People forget how movies were consumed in the eighties and nineties. Now, you can stream millions of titles, which are available at the click of a button. But, back in the day, you had to rely on whatever was playing on TV or, if you were lucky, a trip to the local video store. One of the films that were ubiquitous was The Great Outdoors, a John Hughes-penned family comedy, which paired his favorite actor, John Candy, with the great Dan Aykroyd. The story of two feuding fathers spending time at a summer cabin, it has all the hallmarks of a great John Hughes movie. It has the slapstick, the silliness (the subtitled raccoons crack me up), and yes -even some heart in the unexpected climax.
Indeed, this became a staple of cable tv, and in fact, AMC still shows this movie pretty frequently. There’s something endlessly rewatchable about Hughes at his best,...

The 1987 comedy "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" is one of the late John Hughes' best movies. On the project, Hughes pulled a triple duty: he wrote, directed, and produced the film. That, however, wasn't suppose to be the case; Howard Deutch, who had just collaborated with Hughes on "Pretty in Pink," was originally set to direct the Thanksgiving classic, but once Steve Martin came into play, Hughes had a change of heart. "He loved Steve Martin," Deutch said in "John Hughes: A Life in Film," a 2015 biography written by Kirk Honeycutt.
In "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," Steve Martin plays Neal Page, an impatient and snobby ad executive who's in a rush to make it home to his wife and children for Thanksgiving. Page's assumingly straightforward trip from New York back home to Chicago becomes a convoluted -- and hilarious -- disaster after repeated unfortunate encounters with Del Griffith (John Candy), a slob,...

One of the more minor asterisks in writer/producer John Hughes' canon is the 1988 comedy "The Great Outdoors," which paired Dan Aykroyd and the late John Candy as mismatched brothers-in-law whose two families come together at a Wisconsin lake resort.
Slapstick hilarity ensued, including water skiing mishaps, a steak-eating contest and a giant bear attack. The movie, which was the third pairing of Hughes and director Howard Deutch after the teen pictures "Pretty in Pink" and "Some Kind of Wonderful," got lousy reviews and broke even at the box office.

To mark the release of Restless Natives, out now, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Fans of Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero would do well to add Restless Natives to their collection. First released in 1985 this spirited, establishment-mocking caper movie remains a much-loved and thoroughly enjoyable comedy gem featuring a soundtrack by Big Country. It’s the story of two under-employed Scots who achieve wealth and notoriety as modern-day highwayman holding up coachloads of tourists wearing a wolf and a clown mask and armed only with a puffer gun! Their exploits make them a bigger tourist attraction than the Loch Ness Monster, much to the annoyance of the inept local police.

A gleeful sense of humour powers Michael Hoffman’s 1985 crime caper, part of Scotland’s cinematic response to Thatcherism
“Guns are for Lassies! Nobody seems to put the Boot in any more!” This rousing manifesto for muscular non-armed crime of the traditional sort comes from one of the hardened villains that surreally pop up in this intensely likable Scottish caper from 1985, with a soundtrack from Big Country. It was part of a boom in Britmovie comedy of the era when Scotland was becoming caustically alienated from Thatcherite England, and which gave us Bill Forsyth’s Gregory’s Girl, Comfort and Joy and Local Hero. The script from Ninian Dunnett was originally the winning entry of a screenwriting competition and it was directed by the anglophile and caledonophile American Michael Hoffman.

“Minari,” from Plan B and A24, is writer-director Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical tale of a Korean-American family starting a new life in 1980s Arkansas. The characters, played by Steven Yeun, Yeri Han and Yuh-jung Youn, among others, live in a small mobile home on isolated patch of land; one of the challenges was to convey both the sense of home and the vast, green area. Praising his artisan team, Chung says, “This film wouldn’t have been possible without them. I think they know that, and I hope they get the recognition they deserve.”

Mid-June is prime summer-movie playtime, a period that launched massive hits like “Incredibles 2” and “Jurassic World.” That’s not our world now, and the top performing films look very different: “Da 5 Bloods” on Netflix, Universal’s “The King of Staten Island” on premium VOD, and a weird little Kevin James movie like “Becky” from Quiver Distribution.
Spike Lee’s latest, one of the best-reviewed films of the year and Netflix’s first potential awards contender, is listed at not only #1 among the streamer’s movies, but also tops their overall content list. It reached that its second day out, and remained so for three days running. The durability will count: Netflix represents mass-audience tastes, similar to wide-release movies.
Pete Davidson’s semi-autobiographical “Staten Island” hit #1 at the top spots, as expected including FandangoNow and Amazon Prime, which lists by transactions. Spectrum should show up next week, while iTunes...

Ryan Reynolds is paying tribute to an actor and comedian who will always have a special place in his heart.

Thanksgiving is all about the buildup.
You wait for it, that long weekend that you know will include family, maybe some football, plenty of food, and then leftovers and sales the day after that. Everything looks great in those weeks leading up to the fourth Thursday in November, until it all goes to hell, with that long drive probably filled with holiday traffic and the drunk relatives whose opinions you really don’t care to hear about. The anticipation of the holiday is fun. The drama that ensues during it is not.

Kevin Hart‘s scary car accident over the weekend has a lot of people worried. While the star’s health is obviously first and foremost, studios must also consider the long-term ramifications of his ongoing recovery. For example, the extensive physical therapy he’ll have to endure on his way to a full recovery is expected to throw a lot of his upcoming projects into limbo. This isn’t the case for Jumanji: The Next Level, though.
From what we understand, Hart’s completely finished working on his next two movies, which includes the aforementioned sequel. The follow-up to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle wrapped in May and it sounds like the comedian has already concluded any reshoots necessary for the December premiere.
The actor has also done all the work needed to complete his new film Fatherhood. The flick’s expected to be released in April of 2020 and tells...

The superhero movie genre is getting Kevin Hart comedy Night Wolf, which comes from the writers of Detective Pikachu.
Night Wolf is joining the seemingly-ceaseless deluge of superhero cinema, with Kevin Hart set to star-in and produce the comedic cinematic genre offering.
STXfilms announced its acquisition of the script to Night Wolf, which is being described as a “high concept comic superhero” offering. The early details of the plot describe a scenario that’s initially akin to Meet the Parents, in which a man (Hart) meets his prospective father-in-law, eventually discovering the secret that he’s the film’s eponymous superhero, the Night Wolf.
The Night Wolf project was pitched by writer Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, a duo who did some work on the screenplay for this past May’s live-action/animated hybrid film, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, as well as television comedy work on episodes of...

Oscar nominated actor Michael Shannon is now on board the movie Swing that is described as a “romantic coming-of-age drama set in the world of elite varsity rowing.” The movie is being directed by Howard Deutch and written by Vojin Gjaja, “a former armor officer in the United States Army, the screenplay is based on his experiences as an oarsman at Columbia University.”
The story is said to be similar to Friday Night Lights and Dead Poets Society. “Set in 1999, it centers on a group of friends and crew teammates in their last year of college whose lives are changed forever when a Vietnam vet (Shannon) takes over as coach of their dysfunctional team.”
This sounds like Shannon will be playing sort of a heartwarming role. I think this will be a stretch, as he is generally super creepy. If he can pull it off, I’ll be impressed. I...

Monday marks the 25th anniversary of the death of the iconic actor John Candy and Hollywood took to Twitter to pay their respects to the Emmy-winning actor, one of them being fellow Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds. The Deadpool star posted a video on the social media platform which included highlights of Candy’s memorable career.
“It’s the 25th anniversary of John Candy’s passing,” Reynolds wrote on Twitter. “We cooked up a small tribute to a comedic genius and Canadian hero. If you haven’t seen much of his work, take a look at his films. He was a treasure.”
Candy’s children graciously responded to Reynold’s post. Chris Candy thanked Reynolds saying that the video was “lovely” while Jennifer Candy wrote, “This made me cry. It’s so amazing and sweet!” She continued, “He has so many people that absolutely love him, he was one of the best.

Hollywood actress Annette Bening was 30 when her first film, the John Candy comedy, The Great Outdoors, was released in 1988. Thirty years later, she's still making movies — she currently stars in The Seagull, based on Anton Chekhov's play — but she's now been married to Warren Beatty for more than 25 years and raised four kids. And she's still taking on new challenges in her life. "For so long, you feel like you're teaching your children about the world, and now they're teaching me," Annette tells NPR. Among the lessons she's learned as she celebrates her 60th birthday on May 29: compassion, understanding, and patience. She says to NPR, "There's a whole new universe opened up to me" by her oldest son, Stephen, 26, who was born a female and is now transgender. Youngest son, Ben, 23, encouraged her to take a role in the female-superhero movie Captain Marvel. "She's thrilled this is keeping her relevant,...

John Hughes is pretty much a legend to those who grew up through the 80s. He was the man responsible for coming-of-age classics such as Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day off and many more including one of which is getting a remake, The Great Outdoors which originally starred Dan Aykroyd and John Candy.
Almost twenty years after the Howard Deutch directed original was released, it has now been confirmed that a remake is in the works with the pint-sized force of silly comedy nature, Kevin Hart well and truly attached to star. In what capacity of character, we don’t know as yet, but we dread to think which character he could possible ruin.

I can’t believe I’m actually saying this but a remake of The Great Outdoors starring Kevin Hart isn’t that bad of an idea. Hart’s established himself as one of the leading comedic actors and the idea of him heading to a lake house with his family to fight the elements and a crazy relative isn’t bad. While part of me thinks the 1988 classic starring John Candy and Dan Aykroyd, written by John Hughes, should be untouchable, it’s been nearly 30 years and I could see this working. The main question I have is, “who is going to play Roman?”

Kevin Hart is set to star in a remake of the classic 1988 John Candy and Dan Aykroyd comedy The Great Outdoors. I love the original film that was written by John Hughes. For me, it's one of those timeless classics that always makes me laugh.
The story centers on Candy taking his family on a relaxing vacation up in the woods when his annoying brother unexpectedly shows up and ruins it. I imagine the remake will follow the exact same plot.
As much as I hate seeing movies like this get remade, it seems like the kind of film that Hart would be perfect for. I can see him in this story. I have no idea if the remake will end up being better than the original, but as someone who enjoys his comedy and films, I'm sure he'll bring on the laughs.

The Great Outdoors isn’t the greatest movie that John Hughes, Dan Aykroyd, or John Candy ever made. But it does hold a certain nostalgic appeal (especially the iconic scene where Candy pits himself against a massive 96-ounce steak, with Aykroyd as his impromptu ringside coach).
Now, Kevin Hart will step up to tackle a similarly huge challenge, with Variety reporting that the comedian will star in a remake of the 1988 film. Universal is currently looking for a director to take on the project, while Randall Green, who writes on Showtime’s Billions, will pen the script.
The biggest question, of course, is who the studio will find to star opposite Hart, a tried-and-tested veteran of buddy-dynamics movies. Assuming Hart sticks with his usual niche and steps into the relatively straight-laced Candy role, there are any number of actors who could play the irritating brother-in-law driving him to distraction ...

The 1988 John Candy and Dan Aykroyd comedy The Great Outdoors is getting a remake, starring Kevin Hart.
We’ve not had news of a newly-announced remake for a little while, and we’d assumed that the contents of the 1980s and 1990s had been thoroughly mined. That’s not the case, however, as Universal has settled on a new version of the 1988 comedy, The Great Outdoors.
