Of all the many sub-genres in horror, the slasher is probably my favorite. There aren’t many good ones, but even the bad ones tend to deliver exactly what we want from the formula. They’re horror movie comfort food, and Shudder is offering an entire buffet this October.
Black Christmas (1973, dir. Bob Clark) In many ways the first modern slasher film, Bob Clark’s holiday horror movie is, to this day, a genre masterpiece. From its chilly Canadian atmosphere to the disturbing obscene phone calls being made to a sorority house, Black Christmas is brilliantly constructed and hugely influential. It’s not just one of my favorite slasher movies, but one of my favorite horror movies of any type, full stop.
Blood Rage (1987, dir. Bruce Rubin) There are slasher movies that are tense and scary and stylish. Blood Rage is not one of them. Shot in 1983 but not released...

Happy Memorial Day, everyone! While you’re off enjoying some much-needed downtime with friends and family, we’ve gone ahead and put together a recap of this week’s horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases that are coming our way on May 30th.
For those of you cult film aficionados out there, get those wallets ready, because there’s a bunch of great titles arriving on Blu-ray this Tuesday, including Blackenstein, Evil Ed, The Blood of Fu Manchu / The Castle of Fu Manchu double feature, The Hearse, The Undertaker, Slaughterhouse Rock, and Hide and Go Shriek.
As far as new genre films go, The Blackcoat’s Daughter (one of my personal favorites of 2017) and Rupture are making their way to Blu-ray and DVD, with the Shock-o-Rama box set also coming out on DVD.

Growing up in a small suburban town, the horror fan base was enormous but the festivities geared toward such a crowd were few and far between. The first ever horror film festival in my hometown launched when I was eighteen years old and, although I’ve attended many larger-scale festivals since, this one remains unforgettable. Not only did I get to meet a couple horror icons (there were only two in attendance) and view the works of young horror filmmakers, this festival was history in the making and I was there.
Unfortunately for the townspeople in Midnight Matinee (1989), their first horror film festival also made history… and they only wish that they could forget. But as far as the film itself, it won’t take me long to forget.

VHS collectors seem to be coming out of the woodwork lately. What many thought was a dead format seems to be making a major resurgence, similar to the way vinyl did. We wouldn’t dream of telling you that the quality of a VHS cassette provides superior picture, sound, or anything. But it is certainly a lot of nostalgic fun to revisit some of the more obscure VHS titles that have never been released on DVD or Blu-ray by way of your Vcr.
Be Kind, Rewind is your one stop destination for all the information you could ever want about horror films that have never been granted a DVD or Blu-ray release. We will help you locate and evaluate VHS exclusive titles. Be Kind, Rewind gives you the low-down on the VHS only title we are re-visiting; including where to find it, the going rate, a review of the film,...

Skip Schoolnik is the director behind the 80's slasher Hide and Go Shriek. Hide and Go Shriek is one of those films that featured some up and coming talent along with some actors that dropped off the face of the earth. The cast included Bunky Jones, Brittain Frye (Slumber Party Massacre III), Sean Kanan (The Karate Kid Part III), Ria Pavia (Candyman), Annette Sinclair, Donna Baltron (Shallow Grave 1987), Scott Fults, and George Thomas. Hide and Go Shriek deals with a group of teenagers who sneak into a furniture store to have an after hours graduation party unaware that a killer has followed them and is picking people off one by one as they play a game of hide and seek. Here is what Skip had to say about making his first film, Hide and Go Shriek.
So who is Skip Schoolnik and what are you all about?
I'm all about doing great work.
