Since we’re talking about the short films, I’ll accordingly keep this brief. Here are five reasons why “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” will win the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
1. It’s the clear standout in the category.
All five nominees are exceptional — the others being “The After,” “Red, White and Blue,” “Invincible” and “Knight of Fortune.” In a less competitive year, any one of them could easily walk away with the prize. But it’s simply too hard for anything to top “Henry Sugar.” Based on the short story of the same name by celebrated children’s author Roald Dahl, the film is seamlessly adapted to the screen with the same charm, wit and magic of the original tale. “Henry Sugar” features superb acting, exquisite costume and production design, beautiful cinematography and sharp editing. It holds an outstanding 95% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Anne Hathaway has worked hard to establish herself as one of the best actresses in all of Hollywood, as her grace and elegance in every single role have won the hearts and minds of not just fans, but peers as well.

There's an endless debate between film fans on what it is exactly that makes a film "camp." For some, it's a shorthand to mean "so bad, it's good," while others (like myself) view it as a sacred form of presentation. Camp films are often exaggerated to the point of absurdity, tiptoeing the line of the uncanny, and with a sense of humor that is either unintentionally brilliant or delivered with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Of my 15 favorite movies of all time, more than half of the titles could be argued as camp classics. While there are plenty of universally understood camp films, the intentional lack of a formal metric means that a film's camp status will change from viewer to viewer, determined by vibes and a "you know it when you see it" attitude.

Despite how prevalent they are in spooky media, you’d be surprised at how rare it used to be for traditionally recognizable witches to be the main antagonists in scary movies. Sure, we got the eerie crones of the pseudo-documentary Haxan and even a dancing coven in Suspiria, but for the longest time, witches were relegated to humorous stereotypes akin to the Sanderson Sisters rather than anything truly terrifying. It’s only recently that modern classics like The Witch and Gretel and Hansel have made potions and broomsticks scary again, revisiting the disturbing origins of these myths in ways that genre films of the 20th century simply couldn’t handle.
There are a few exceptions to this rule, however, and one of my favorites just so happens to be a bizarre trilogy that dared to ask what would happen if a potion-brewing maniac from the early days of America found himself transported to modern times.

“Nothing is what it seems.” A seemingly offhand remark made early in Don’t Look Now is slowly revealed to be the theme around which the film revolves.
Nicolas Roeg’s directorial efforts may not have always connected with audiences immediately, but his impressionistic approach has aged like fine wine. Don’t Look Now, in particular, was decades ahead of its time upon its release in 1973.
The screenplay — written by Allan Scott and Chris Bryant (The Awakening), based on a 1971 short story by Daphne du Maurier — analyzes the psychological effects of trauma through a horror lens; a motif we’ve seen explored many times over in recent years, from Ari Aster’s filmography to David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy.
Following the tragic drowning of their young daughter, architect John Baxter and bereaved wife Laura travel from their English country home to Venice to oversee the restoration of a church. After a...

Wes Anderson’s new short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, marks the second time the director has made an adaptation of a work by the celebrated author Roald Dahl. So, it’s no surprise that when he held a press conference at the Venice Film Festival for the premiere on Friday, September 1st, he was asked about his thoughts on the edits publishers made to Dahl’s books for a recently released collection meant for kids, which included rewrites intended to remove “offensive” language.
“Certainly no one who is not an author should be modifying somebody’s book,” he said at the press conference. “I don’t even want the artist to modify their work… I understand the motivation for it, but I’m in the school where, when the piece of work is done, we participate in it. The audience participates in it. We know it. So,...

Netflix has landed the feature film rights to Kotaro Isaka’s novel, “Seesaw Monster.” The film version is set to star Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault as rivals forced to work together.
Isaka is best known for writing “Maria Beetle,” which was adapted into 2022’s comedic thriller “Bullet Train” starring Brad Pitt. “Seesaw Monster” is not related to the Japanese author’s “Hitman” trilogy, which includes “Maria Beetle” and “Three Assassins,” the inspiration behind the 2015 movie “Grasshopper.”
Plot details for “Seesaw Monster” haven’t been revealed, but Netflix describes the movie as “an action-comedy two-hander” between Hathaway and Hayek Pinault. Olivia Milch, whose credits include writing, directing and producing Netflix’s “Dude” and co-writing “Ocean’s 8,” is penning the screenplay. It’s unclear who will direct the film.
Hathaway and Hayek Pinault will also serve as producers alongside Akiva Goldsman, Gregory Lessans, Ryosuke Saegusa and Yuma Terada. Executive producers include Jose Tamez,...

It’s easy to take Anne Hathaway for granted. She’s that smart tall girl who always does her homework, raises her hand, and knows the answer. She’s been in demand in Hollywood since her 2001 breakout in “The Princess Diaries” and she’s been rewarded for her doing her best: She earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her recovering addict in Jonathan Demme’s 2009 drama “Rachel Getting Married, and she won the Supporting Actress Oscar in 2013 for her moist and skeletal singing of “I Dreamed a Dream” in “Les Misérables.”
And then, social media slagged Hathaway for her goody-two-shoes perfectionism. At last week’s Elle annual Women in Hollywood tribute, Hathaway admitted that her time in the virtual hate box left scars. “Ten years ago, I was given an opportunity to look at the language of hatred from a new perspective,” she said. “For context — this was a...

The Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR) has unveiled the line-up for its 50th edition, with the Mads Mikkelsen-starring Riders Of Justice set to open the fest.
You can see the full line-up below. The event has had to change its traditional format for 2021 due to ongoing pandemic disruption. It will now run as a two-stage event, initially with a hybrid showcase of films February 1-7, followed by a physical event June 2-6.
The flagship Tiger Competition has confirmed 16 titles, 14 of which are world premieres. There are a further 15 titles in the Big Screen competition, which looks to bridge the gap between popular and arthouse cinema, while the non-competitive Limelight section will feature 13 titles, most of which have played other festivals, such as Magnus von Horn’s Sweat and Jasmila Žbanić’s Quo Vadis, Aida?.

Every year, movies are being produced at faster rates and in greater quantity, and that’s thanks – in part – to streamers like Netflix. Because of their business strategy, customers can now watch thousands of films for the same price as a single cinema ticket. As such, the entertainment appetite of the American public has been growing stronger with each passing season. To that end, here’s an overview of the best new movies coming to Netflix next month.
First off, we got science fiction and fantasy. Fans of visiting other worlds will be in for a treat in July, as Netflix will be adding Cloud Atlas to its library. Directed by the Wachowski siblings – the same ones who created the now-infamous Matrix franchise – this time-traveling epic follows the stories of a handful of reincarnating souls who live their different yet similar lives across several centuries.

How does Netflix determine which titles leave and which enter its dauntingly large library? Do they carefully analyze viewing statistics and find content that caters to our interests? Or do they simply throw an immense amount of content at the wall and watch what sticks?
The answer is probably a mix of both. Like most entertainment companies, Netflix knows full well the potential of mathematics, but it also respects the creative spirit. As such, some new additions may have been carefully chosen, and others not. In any case, here’s an overview of the 81 new movies and TV shows headed to the platform this coming week.

The summer movie season, as we usually know it, isn’t happening this year, with few big releases planning to drop over the next couple of months, even if cinemas are just starting to reopen. Instead, then, it’s falling on Netflix and the various other streaming services to pull their weight and give movie lovers a range of new content to feast on. Thankfully, July isn’t looking too shabby for original films and TV, not to mention lots of classics or underrated gems appearing on all the usual sites.
Of course, Netflix has the most original output coming across next month. TV fans, in particular, have got much to look forward to, including season 2 of The Umbrella Academy. In fact, it’s a good month for fantasy series based off comic books all-round, as we’ve also got Arthurian retelling Cursed and super-powered action show Warrior Nun coming as well.

You know, plenty of streaming services would treat the dog days of summer as an excuse to slow down. At Netflix, however, the content buffet is still open, baby. Despite the coronavirus pandemic shutting down all of Hollywood for an extended period of time, Netflix’s new releases for July 2020 are still jam-packed with a host of familiar originals.
The blockbuster this month is probably The Umbrella Academy season 2. The next installment for the Hargreeves family arrives on July 31. And if that’s too long of a wait for you, Netflix gets the month off to a strong start with a string of originals as well. Unsolved Mysteries arrives on July 1, followed by Warrior Nun on July 2, and The Baby-Sitter’s Club on July 3. That’s not even to mentioned the feminist take on Arthurian legend, Cursed, which premiers on July 17.
There are a couple of intriguing original movies to consider this month as well.

The great cycle of Netflix content continues, and throughout next month a number of horror movies will be added to the digital library, as if real life isn’t terrifying enough right now.
First up is Red Riding Hood, another retelling of possibly the world’s most famous fairy tale, this one seeing a young woman living in a village on the edge of a forest plagued by a werewolf becoming essential in unraveling the mystery of the creature’s identity as the townsfolk attempt to put an end to the threat.
Although far from the first adaptation of Washington Irving’s famous short story, Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow is also on the way and is one of the best, a murder mystery that expands the brief tale into a snapshot of colonial life and superstition, with black magic, brutal death and supernatural mayhem.

“It’s not an easy watch,” says Annabel Scholey of her latest role in BBC One’s The Salisbury Poisonings. “It’s harrowing but it’s an important story to tell.” The three-part drama airing on consecutive nights from Sunday the 14th of June depicts the aftermath of the 2018 assassination attempt on Russians Sergei and Yulia Skripal in the English city of Salisbury.
“You’d expect spies and the political side of things,” says Scholey, “but this is a different angle.” The drama focuses entirely on the local response to the Novichok poisonings led by public health director Tracy Daszkiewicz (Anne-Marie Duff), and on inadvertent victims Dawn Sturgess (MyAnna Buring) and DS Nick Bailey (Rafe Spall).

Tomorrow is the last day of 2019, which means that we’re about to enter an entirely new decade. Fingers crossed that 2020 is something special. With a whole new year about to be upon us, and as such, there’s a ton of new films to anticipate. Fun times, right? Today will be a day to look forward, which is a little different than most are doing here in the final days of December, when looking back is all the rage. Indeed, there’s a whole slate of titles emerging in the weeks and months to come, so that’s what we’ll be focusing on. Even just in the coming days, we’ll see 2020 releases begin to overtake the current 2019 expansions. There will be some rather rough times as studios dump their lesser projects, but look to the independent flicks for saving graces until the bigger films begin to come out,...

First we had Dumbo and now, we’re gettin’ Pinocchio. Disney’s been remaking their old animated flicks into full-fledged live-action productions at an alarming rate and this particular adaptation of the wooden puppet’s exploits has been floating around for an absurd amount of time, at one point even having Paul Thomas Anderson attached back in 2015. Now, we’re learning that storied director Robert Zemeckis is in talks to take over the troubled film and is likely to sign on.
Zemeckis, famous for directing Back to the Future and Forrest Gump among others, comes aboard hot off polishing up a different, spookier tale: The Witches, where he’s going to somehow turn Anne Hathaway ugly, which is no simple feat. From what we understand, Zemeckis’ old pal Tom Hanks was in talks at one point to portray Gepetto in the Mouse House’s remake, but that doesn’t seem...

In the wake of a string of bombs, i.e. last Christmas’ Welcome to Marwen ($13M) and the Brad Pitt-Marion Cotillard WWII spy romance Allied ($120M off an $85M production cost), Forrest Gump Oscar winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis is in early talks to direct a live-action version of Pinocchio for Disney. It’s the same kind of career rebound that Guy Ritchie employed following his disastrous King Arthur: Legend of the Sword: Hook up with Disney on a branded live-action feature toon IP that speaks to a filmmaker’s talent, and the box office riches will take care of itself. For Ritchie, that was this summer’s Aladdin which easily became his highest grossing film of all-time with $1.05 billion.

Robert Zemeckis is in early talks to direct Disney’s live-action remake of their animated classic “Pinocchio,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
“Paddington” director Paul King was originally circling the project but left earlier this year. Chris Weitz wrote the most recent draft of the script, and he’s also producing with Andrew Miano. The film’s original producer, David Heyman, is also no longer involved.
In November 2018, Tom Hanks was in early talks to star but ultimately passed to star as Geppetto, the puppet maker and Pinocchio’s father, but Zemeckis will lead his own search for a cast.

It looks like Disney Studios is ready to move forward with their live-action remake of their animated classic Pinocchio. The studio is currently in talks with Robert Zemeckis to direct the project.

Robert Zemeckis is in early talks to direct Disney’s live-action “Pinocchio.”

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Roald Dahl’s marvelous horror thriller for children (the ones ready for it) knows exactly what it is and doesn’t soft-pedal the scary stuff. Horrible (but sexy) witches plot the wholesale destruction of Hansels and Gretels everywhere, and the only kid that can stop them has been changed into a mouse. Nicolas Roeg runs wild with Dahl’s imaginative, refreshingly un-pc book; the usual softening touches are skipped in favor of unadulterated scarifying Fun. It couldn’t be better directed; we wish that Roeg had been able to create a dozen such outrageous fantasies. Star Anjelica Huston is an amazing Grand High Witch, with Mai Zetterling, Anne Lambton and Jane Horrocks providing able witchy support. Recommended!

Twelve Aussie creatives are off to Los Angeles for Talent USA: La, a week-long program that involves meetings, workshops and networking opportunities.
Talent USA: La is an initiative of Screen Australia and the Australian Writers’ Guild, and participants were selected due to their existing international profile or having already attracted Us interest in their work.

A man arrested on suspicion of wounding another on the set of Anne Hathaway movie “The Witches” has been given bail, and sources say production on the Roald Dahl adaptation has been unaffected.
The incident on Wednesday at Warner Bros.’ studio in Leavesden, outside London, was originally reported as a stabbing, but appears less serious than first thought, with the alleged victim suffering “a small laceration to his neck” during a confrontation with someone known to him, police said.
Sources close to the film told Variety that production did not cease because of the incident and the movie’s schedule remains unchanged. “The Witches,” which also stars Chris Rock and Octavia Spencer, has been scheduled by Warner Bros. for an Oct. 16, 2020, release.
The studio issued a statement Wednesday acknowledging the incident but giving little further information, on the grounds that it was a police matter. A spokesman declined any further comment Thursday.
