While Stallone and Schwarzenegger took the 80s by storm with their famous brand of one-man-army spectacles, the latter part of the decade would also see a new breed of tough guys branch out into a different trend of action. It wasn’t only about the ripped muscles and the gunplay and explosions. After martial arts had gone mainstream, stars such as Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal would carve out their own little place at the box office as they brought their expertise of hand-to-hand combat to the masses.
Naturally, other studios would want to get in on the action and the best thing about jumping on this trend is the fact that there is still an aspect of originality since each star would be spotlighting a specific sect of martial arts. For example, Michael Dudikoff would showcase Ninjitsu, Seagal showcased Aikido, Phillip Rhee showcased Tae Kwan Do,...

Since Van Damme and Seagal hit big in the late 80s and early 90s, martial artists started to come out of the woodwork with their own unique brand. As we’ve covered recently on Reel Action, Van Damme collaborator Sheldon Lettich attempted to introduce audiences to both the style of Capoeira and the star power of Mark Dacascos in Only the Strong. Another martial artist that tried his hand at the action title and came away with a cult following was Jeff Speakman as he demonstrated his Kenpo skills in the 1991 film The Perfect Weapon.

Usually, when people think of the greatest decade for action movies, the 80s are what they think of. After all, this is the era that gave us Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, the Rambo movies, and so many more. But, the nineties was just as important a decade, giving birth to just as many legends of the genre, and it was the last significant era for R-rated action flicks. But what are the best action movies of the 90s? It’s tough to say, but here are 10, plus an honourable mention, that we think we deserve a place in the pantheon.
Honourable Mention: Demolition Man:
When this came out in the fall of 1993, it wasn’t considered all that special. It apparently lost money at the box office, but within a few years, this Sylvester Stallone/ Wesley Snipes mashup became a major cult classic, and now it’s one of the...

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

Ralph Ahn, who recurred as Nick’s mostly silent friend on Fox’s New Girl and had credits dozens of credits spanning more than 65 years, has died. He was 95. Korean American Federation of Los Angeles reported his February 26 death but did not provide details.
In his signature role, Ahn played Tran on the Zooey Deschanel-led Fox sitcom New Girl, appearing in seven episodes spanning its 2011-18 run. He was a mostly smiling and nodding grandfather figure to co-lead Nick (Jake Johnson) and spoke only two lines of dialogue — one in Tran’s first appearance and one in his last.
His long list of credits ranges from such 1950s TV series as Terry and the Pirates, 21 Beacon Street and China Smith popular more recent shows including ER, Gilmore Girls, The King of Queens, The Shield, Suddenly Susan and Walker, Texas Ranger. He also had small roles in a number of...

With Lovecraft Country still providing HBO and HBO Max with its horror content through October, the streamer is looking elsewhere for its spooky season offerings. HBO Max’s new releases for October 2020 feature some truly awesome horror library titles.
Jordan Peele’s Us, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and David Fincher’s Se7en all arrive on Oct. 1. That alone should be enough to last you through spooky season. And if it doesn’t, It: Chapter Two is right there as well. October is also a big month for Batman and Superman with Man of Steel arriving on Oct. 1 along with a whole of animated specials dropping that same day.
In relation to the library titles, this isn’t HBO Max’s strongest month from an original perspective. But there is still plenty to like here. The West Wing election special arrives on Oct. 15. That will be followed by David Byrne...

"We don't see the war, but war is taking place." HBO has unveiled a trailer for a documentary titled The Perfect Weapon, from doc filmmaker John Maggio, based on a best-selling book by NY Times national security correspondent David E. Sanger. The doc film explores the rise of cyber conflict as the primary way nations now compete with and sabotage one another. A worthy follow-up to Alex Gibney's Zero Days doc, also about cyber warfare and how it can be used to destroy entire countries. This film features interviews with top military, intelligence, and political officials on the frontlines of cyberterrorism, the documentary brings to light the combatants and innocent victims caught in the crosshairs of a hidden war that has been going on for decades — a war that America started, but has no idea how to finish. This is all horrifying, but if we talk about it, ...

Matt Damon returns to the Bourne franchise bolder, badder and more ruthless than ever. That’s what the promotional materials released so far are leading us to believe, anyway. If you thought there was nowhere else for Jason Bourne to run – you’re wrong.
The fifth installment in the series marks a reunion of Damon and his two-time Bourne helmer Paul Greengrass, for what appears to be another pulse-pounding chapter of espionage. It’s that blend of action and thrills that take center stage in this brief 30-second TV spot. Unlike some of the more spoiler-filled ones of recent weeks, the focus is on Bourne’s raw emotion driving him on to uncover the truth behind more secret government shenanigans.
Thankfully, this teaser doesn’t dally too much with plot reveals; it mainly involves lots of punching. Cast your eyes over this newest clip along with a brand new international poster below,...

Matt Damon talks about returning to the franchise that became synonymous with his name in this featurette called Jason Bourne is Back. In many ways the Bourne series redefined the spy action genre a decade ago, so much so that even James Bond (the original Jb) started to follow in Jason Bourne’s footsteps with the […]

After a trilogy of movies bearing titles such as "The Bourne Identity," "The Bourne Supremacy," and "The Bourne Ultimatum," the fourth film in the saga of Jason Bourne (which presumably circumvents the side-quel "The Bourne Legacy") is keeping things simple with its name: "Jason Bourne." And that choice makes perfect sense when you hear Matt Damon's explanation of where this sequel fits into the puzzle of deciphering his lead character. "This is the completion of this journey that started in the 'Bourne Identity.' It’s part of the first three [movies], it’s not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we’re not saying it’s the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than 'Ultimatum,' basically," he told EW. The Bourne Enemy? Nope. Despite rumours pointing to that being the title of Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon’s next Bourne movie (which, let’s face it, most of us never expected to happen), we now know that they’ve gone with the straightforward “Jason Bourne”. Why? Chances are Universal want to make it clear this instalment is

I’m a huge fan of 2009′s Ninja, as my signed Blu-ray will atest, so it’s safe to say I was super-excited for the UK release of the sequel Ninja: Shadow of a Tear. Whereas the first film saw Scott Adkins titular hero Casey Bowman using his ninjutsu skills on the streets of New York, this film sees Casey return home from some late night shopping to find someone has brutally killed his wife Namiko (Mika Hijii) and their unborn child. Bereft, Casey has only one thing left to live for… revenge.
The only clues to Namiko’s killer are the barbed wire marks left around her neck. So, with the help of his trusted friend Nakabara...

Reading Chris Holt’s recent excellent feature on the death of the local video store, (as well as this week’s release of Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2) I got to thinking about my own experiences of traipsing along to my local video store in search of something obscure but exciting. During my mid to late teens it was all about straight to video martial arts films – my Dad had introduced me to Bruce Lee by way of The Big Boss and I had worked my way through a whole load of Jackie Chan, Seagal and Jcvd, before resorting to just picking up a video that looked like it contained a lot of fighting and seeing what it offered.
Needless to say, a lot of what I stumbled on was deeply, abidingly terrible. Lone Wolf McQuaid was pretty good, but Code of Silence was abysmal. Delta Force II and III were both excellent fun,...

Revenge was in the air on 90210. But the real tragedy in "Greek Tragedy" was that the episode was Not entirely about Naomi.
Every scene this character was in was amusing and fun to watch. From the catty one-liners she shared with Holly to the laser pointer to her chic Greek makeovers, she was on point. Naomi was typical Naomi. Oblivious to Ivy's pain, she simply walked away when she saw something more interesting. Like a magpie spotting a shiny object.
The perfect weapon to wield against her new nemesis, Holly, Naomi made a beeline to Cu's big fat Greek sorority, which was all to happy to help Naomi get revenge. And, after Holly's toga stunt, all I wanted to see was Naomi wreak havoc on that beeyotch's busted weave. Especially now that Holly found Max's love letters and intends to use them to bury her. We'll see about that.

No order of preference, really. Moreover, cars are not included.
#5: The Ericsson mobile phone in Tomorrow Never Dies.
A stun gun of 20,000 Volt that can shock unauthorized users, a fingerprint scanner, a lock pick and a "flip-open" remote control to control a bad-ass car. The perfect weapon for a spy!
#4: The ultrasonic agitator in Die Another Day.
Don't lie! You'd like to break anti-bullet glasses!
#3: The bagpipes in The World Is Not Enough.
Who cares if you know how to play a bagpipe! Just use it for its integrated machine gun and flame thrower. Unfortunately, this is the only gadget on the list that never made it out of Q's laboratory in James Bond's films.
#2: The Omega wristwatch in Die Another Day.
Unlike the watch you saw in the opening scene of GoldenEye, the one in Die Another Day had an explosive detonator besides a laser beam cutter.

Ever since the dawn of science-fiction, robots (along with their off-shoots like cyborgs and androids) have been a part of the genre, and while there’s all sorts of robots, Killer Film has decided to stick strictly to the concept of ‘bad-assness’. What makes a robot bad-ass? Aren’t they already kind of cool to begin with? We looked for robots that did something ultra-cool that when they did something ultra-cool, in the back of ours minds, we could hear Samuel L. Jackson say “That’s a bad-ass motherf’er!”
Here’s our Top 10 Bad-Ass Movie Robots!
