Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. If you have any questions or comments, or even suggestions of art or other great artists, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.

Animation and fantasy go hand in hand. In the 80s, there was a boom of fantasy epics in the land of cartoons that had nothing to do with the House of Mouse and everything to do with adult content. This was helped along from the previous decade by creator Ralph Bakshi, who had started things off with Fritz the Cat and would be the first to do a feature-length version of Lord of The Rings with his animated film and the trippy flick Wizards (and later – the cult film Cool World).
During our fave decade, Anime would find a welcoming home in the US with several classics that would be released during that time. Canada would also get into the mix with Heavy Metal (which we’ll get to.) But Ralph Bakshi decided to join forces with one of the biggest names in fantasy art for a new entry into...

Brad Pitt celebrated his second Oscar win thanks to his stuntman role in the Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Although he’d previously won a Best Picture victory for producing “12 Years a Slave” (2013), the Best Supporting Actor trophy was his first for acting, despite three previous nominations (plus an additional two in Picture).
He could easily have become just another pretty Hollywood face – a flash in the pan romantic lead or action star. However Pitt studied acting and worked his way up the ladder to become one of the industry’s most versatile and most well-recognized actors, as well as one of the most influential as the owner of a successful award-winning production company.
Born in Oklahoma, he was raised in Springfield, Mo, where he participated in a variety of sports and activities in high school, and went on to college with a major in journalism.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Clint Might Be Complicit in an Orangutan Date Rape
By 1978, Clint Eastwood had starred in Sergio Leone’s Man With No Name trilogy, headlined three “Dirty Harry” movies, and directed six feature films. He could have pulled an Alexander the Great and wept because there was nothing left to conquer. Instead, he teamed up with a monkey.
Against the advice of his agent and manager, Eastwood used his Hollywood clout to force a weird little comedy script called “Every Which Way But Loose” into production. He stars in the film as Philo Beddoe,...

Every now and then, an actor is vocal about disliking a film they once starred in.
While the question “Do you have any career biggest regrets?” may be one of the more obvious ones a journalist can ask an actor. the answer can sometimes be extremely revealing.
Many Hollywood stars have spoken negatively about their past choices, and have even poked fun at the role during an appearance in another one of their films.
Others – for example: Charlize Theron – have admitted accepting a film purely based on the director’s filmography, only to then be let down by the final results of their collaboration.
Below, The Independent looks at 27 actors who have been vocal about disliking films they have starred in.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: "I Married a Strange Person!")
In the 1990s, MTV ran an animated showcase called "Liquid Television," which was a groundbreaking collection of early computer-animated shorts, highly-influential hand-drawn shorts, and was the launchpad for several high-profile originals, like Mike Judge's "Beavis and Butt-Head" and "Æon Flux." MTV snagged some of the most adventurous and experimental shorts from seasoned animators and designers of the era, including Charles Burns, Richard Sala, David Daniels, and Bill Plympton.
The latter was behind the 1987 Academy Awards-nominated short, "Your Face," which featured a man singing about the face of his love, as his own face begins to distort into increasingly unusual positions. He would go on to direct the animated musical feature, "The Tune," which was self-funded and incorporated footage from his shorts "The Wiseman,...

I hope Gabriel Byrne likes ballet because he’s the latest actor to join Ana de Armas for the John Wick spinoff, Ballerina. At the start, Ballerina was a twinkle in the eye of John Wick fans worldwide. No one ever imagined the project would explode into a full-on spinoff starring some of Hollywood’s greatest players. Famous for starring in The Usual Suspects, Miller’s Crossing, Hereditary, Cool World, and much more, Byrne is a seasoned film industry vet who brings charisma and gravitas to every role.
Byrne is one of many stars joining Ana de Armas for the film, including Keanu Reeves, Norman Reedus, Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Catalina Sandino Moreno.
Len Wiseman directs from a script by Shay Hatten. Ballerina focuses on a young woman (Ana de Armas) with killer skills who sets out for revenge when assassins kill her family. You know, that old chestnut.

“What are your biggest regrets?” This might be one of the more obvious questions a journalist can ask an actor, but the answer can often be hugely revealing.
Many actors have spoken negatively about their time spent as a superhero, playing a teenage heartthrob or starring in films they believed had been written by somebody else.
Others, including Charlize Theron, have said they took a job solely due to a director’s filmography – only to then be let down by the final results of their collaboration.
Most recently, Jennifer Lawrence revealed that she did not look so favourably upon 2016 science fiction film Passengers.

It's genuinely shocking that "Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers" exists. Every single frame of the film is littered with industry satire and references to some of animation's most iconic characters -- and we're not just talking about characters owned by the House of Mouse. The film is a hilarious takedown of the way animation has evolved and been exploited, with the hybrid style of filmmaking feeling reminiscent of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" or Ralph Bakshi's "Cool World." When the first teaser for "Chip 'n Dale" dropped, people were flabbergasted with just how many animated characters the filmmakers managed to get the rights...

You don’t have to be a gamer to appreciate the traditional animated stylings of Cuphead. That’s the first thing Dave Wasson – showrunner behind the upcoming Netflix TV adaptation – makes clear to us. Limited videogame experience aside, with credits on Space Jam, Cool World, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, it’s hard to think of a hand better equipped to bring this madcap world of anthropomorphic crockery, vegetables, and slot machines to life.
“There was buzz about the Cuphead video game,” Wasson recalls about the early days, before he was even involved in The Cuphead Show. “Even within the animation community… because it was all based on a 1930s, rubber hose style of animation.”
Originally developed by the Moldenhauer brothers, known as Studio Mdhr, Cuphead first launched in 2017, before achieving success on consoles. Classic run-and-gunners had existed for decades before, but as Wasson notes, what made Cuphead...

There's a hybrid animation-live action movie you might remember that came out on the verge of the Disney Renaissance. It's a kind of edgy comedy — one that features a human detective, an animated femme fatale, and a surprisingly disturbing climax. No, I'm not talking about "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" I'm talking about its evil twin of sorts, "Cool World," the 1992 box office bomb that's now mostly remembered as one of Brad Pitt's first roles.
"Cool World" is a relic of a specific time in animation history. By virtue of its release four years after "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" the film garnered negative comparisons to Zemeckis' 1988 blockbuster. But...

Happy (Good) Friday, everyone! Brad Pitt is an Oscar winner but has never taken one home for his acting career. That could change this year as he’s already won a Golden Globe for his stuntman role in the Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” He’s now nominated for the seventh time at the Academy Awards, this time as Best Supporting Actor. It’s his fourth as an actor along with three for producing and “Cool World” (1992). These two flopped so badly they could have derailed his career; however, he proved he could handle meatier roles with “A River Runs Through It” (1992) and could hold his own with blockbuster powerhouses like Tom Cruise in “An Interview with a Vampire” (1994), and Pitt gradually became of the most critically and commercially successful actors of his generation.

He could easily have become just another pretty Hollywood face – a flash in the pan romantic lead or action star. However, Brad Pitt studied acting and worked his way up the ladder to become one of the industry’s most versatile and most well-recognized actors, as well as one of the most influential as the owner of a successful award-winning production company.

Born in Oklahoma, he was raised in Springfield, Mo, where he participated in a variety of sports and activities in high school, and went on to college with a major in journalism. However, restlessness and a love of movies spurred him to move to Los Angeles.

In early July 1992, Paramount decided to drum up publicity for its PG-13 animated/live action hybrid film Cool World by placing a likeness of Kim Basinger's cartoon character on top of the iconic Hollywood sign for one week. Area residents weren't amused, picketing the unveiling and enlisting a plane to fly over the site with a message for the studio. The scene was recounted in The Hollywood Reporter's July 7 article.

Chicago – In one of the most natural pieces of voice casting in cartoon history, Alec Baldwin portrays the title character in Dreamworks Animation’s “The Boss Baby.” The director is animation veteran Tom McGrath (“Madagascar”), and the producer is Ramsey Ann Naito, and they were both in Chicago to promote the film.
“The Boss Baby” is fast, loose, funny and full of heart. Based on a children’s book by Marla Frazee, the animated version combines baby brother jealousy with Mad Men-era business self help, in a crazy visual landscape. Alec Baldwin is at his “30 Rock” best as the Boss Baby, delivering lines like the parody of his famous movie quote, “cookies are for closers.” There are many layers in the film, but mostly it is a hilarious metaphor on how families adjust when new siblings are added to the mix.

Tim Curry has stolen my heart and he’s taking it into Communist space.
Full-Motion Video games were a mid- to late-1990s fad that were either semi-playable movies (where you shot at bad guys running on screen) or incorporated live-action cutscenes into otherwise animated games. Think Who Framed Roger Rabbit? but on your grandma’s PC. They’re usually all as silly as you’d imagine, either aimed at a younger audience delighted to watch some over-the-top fantasy or an older audience wowed by the possibilities of technology. It seems like the perfect home for character actors and infomercial escapees to camp it up with little career risk and some quick cash, right?
The weird thing is how many A-list actors — or at least people you’d never expect — appeared in these games. What’s even weirder is how crazy most of their roles were. Nobody’s a heartfelt dramatic lead, they...

As the major studios tinker with photorealistic character designs, can Hollywood find the future of animation in its past?
This weekend, families with hit their local multiplex to relive the wonder of Beauty and the Beast in its new live-action format. And whether the film is a runaway hit or only a modest success, Disney shows no signs of plugging its pipeline of live-action remakes. According to this 2016 Time piece, Disney is currently working on no fewer than twelve (that’s one-two) remakes of their popular animated films, meaning twelve more movies featuring up-and-coming actresses, revamped musical numbers, and CGI creatures that take a deep, deep dive into the uncanny valley.
While this brand new surge of Disney movies are likely to each be a technical wonder, for my money, there’s something oddly pedestrian about converting the beautiful Disney animated character designs into a series of photorealistic CGI models. While...

To mix action and comedy together is difficult, as an audience one cannot know if one should laugh or take the story seriously, such as "Cool World" from 1992, "The Last Action Hero" from 1993, or any Jackie Chan movie. but there are those who knows how to make a serious movie with some comic relief, such as the classic "Karate Kid" movies and very much comedy with some excitement in it like the "Police Academy" movie series. However in the Thai movie "Extreme Game" it is probably one the most confused movies from the 90s, with mix of 80s action style and Home Alone comedy. Story: A group of teens are enjoying themselves, playing paint ball. Their female leader (Suttida...

“Sausage Party” may be a film about a hotdog that wants to have sex with a bun, but it still represents a watershed moment for Hollywood. The raunchy comedy that’s grossed $65 million after two weeks in theaters is the first R-rated CG animated movie. Co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, “Sausage Party” has sex, violence and curse words in a format that has always been reserved for family-friendly fare.

The movie features the voices of comedic stars like Rogen, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, James Franco and Paul Rudd playing anthropomorphized food items who discover their only reason for existing is to be eaten by humans. Directors Conrad Vernon (“Monsters vs. Aliens”) and Greg Tiernan (TV’s “Thomas & Friends”) have backgrounds in traditional animation aimed at children, but there’s nothing traditional about this deranged dark comedy.

After Charlie Kaufman’s R-rated, stop-motion drama “Anomalisa” failed to make a box office dent last year despite critical kudos, we’ll see if Seth Rogen’s raunchy, CG-animated “Sausage Party” (opening August 12) has a better chance of commercial success.
“One of the biggest reasons I wanted to do this was for the industry itself, just to be able to knock down the door and prove that R-rated animation has an audience,” admitted director Conrad Vernon, who first met Rogen as a voice actor on DreamWorks’ “Monsters vs. Aliens. “It just depends on how you tell the story and we think animation’s not just for families and kids and that it’s a medium and not a genre.”
Vernon has been aching to do an R-rated animated comedy ever since he saw Ralph Bakshi’s “Heavy Metal” in the ’80s. He wound up working on Bakshi’s “Cool World...

Six years ago, way back in July of 2010, I started The Not Just New Movies Podcast, a movie review show in which my co-hosts and I watched a seemingly random film that wasn't currently playing in theaters. It started out as a way for me to talk about movies while staying in touch with my friends on the East Coast after I moved out to Los Angeles, but over the course of two years and 100 episodes, it took on a life of its own. We had a bunch of guests on over the years, from entertainment journalists to writers, actors, and directors, and talked about a truly crazy breadth of films: Pulp Fiction, The Fly, Once Upon a Time in The West, Big Trouble in Little China, Paper Moon, Charade, Cool World, Marathon Man, Wet Hot American Summer...the list goes on. (You can find all of our episodes archived here.

Helena Bonham Carter & Cary Elwes star in Lady Jane (1986)On this day in history as it relates to the movies
1553 Lady Jane Grey takes the throne in England. Her reign is just nine days long and Helena Bonham Carter plays her in her feature film debut (filmed just before A Room With a View though it was released second)
1856 Nikola Tesla, famed inventor and futurist is born in the Austrian empire. He's later played by David Bowie in Christopher Nolan's The Prestige (2006) but isn't it strange that he has never received his own major biopic given his fame and eccentricity and pop culture relevances (bands named after him, characters based on him, etcetera)?
1871 Marcel Proust, French novelist is born.
1925 The "Monkey Trial" in which a man is accused of teaching evolution in science class, begins in Tennessee. It's later adapted into a famous play and the Stanley Kramer film...

We’re talking remakes again, and this time we’re dissecting not one but two popular films which were done previously as a single movie. This week, Cinelinx looks at Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
Ever since J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic book trilogy first came out in the 50s’ there had been talk of adapting it into film but the epic scope of the story often deterred filmmakers of the era from taking on the task. In the early 70’s, director John Boorman (Deliverance, Excalibur) wanted to do a condensed 100-minute version of the whole trilogy but that plan fell apart.
Then, animator/producer Ralph Bakshi (American Pop, Cool World) unveiled his idea to do a two-part adaptation of the trilogy in animated form. Since Tolkien’s daughter was a huge fan of Bakshi’s previous...

1988 was a landmark year in animated cinema for a single reason: "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" The blockbuster showed human characters and cartoons interacting like old chums, and even if you're not the biggest fan of "Cool World" or Mc Skat Kat, that remains a pretty rad idea. That's why it's too bad Charles Schulz had to sully the good name of "Peanuts" with an awful '88 CBS special that makes "Opposites Attract" seem like "Casablanca." The problems begin with the title: "It's the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown." The CBS special, which took years for Schulz to put together, was intended to be his "Citizen Kane." (His words, not mine.) But it's actually a dreadful 50-minute dirge starring, of all characters, Snoopy's brother Spike. He spends quite a bit of time in a live-action, totally boring desert around saguaro cacti. The special also a strangely obvious family affair,...

Juan Navarro is an artist and co-founder of the small press indie comic book company Creature Entertainment located in Miami, Florida. He writes the supernatural crime drama Rez and draws the psychological horror story Tommy. He also runs his own website Fwacata and has his own webcomic The Zombie Years about a futuristic zombie apocalypse.
I first met Juan at Collective Con in Jacksonville, Florida. I bought both issues of Tommy, a psychological horror story about a child whose pet rabbit is a serial killer. I fell in love with Juan’s art style. It is in the same vein as Sam Keith and Skottie Young that combines a cartoonish style with dark grittiness. Think an unholy cross between Looney Tunes and Tales From The Crypt. Since then, I have followed Juan’s work and always look forward to hearing about the next project he is involved in.

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.
On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production...

On April 29th, 2014, the entertainment community lost a truly gifted and likable performer. Robert William “Bob” Hoskins was an English actor, director, and comedian who had a wonderful and diverse career spanning more than 4 decades. Known mainly for his film roles, Hoskins’ on-screen personas were often that of gruff, down-to-Earth individuals who would get themselves into sticky situations. He is perhaps best known for the Robert Zemeckis film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, where he acted alongside cartoon characters. This 1988 film noir comedy blended live-action Hoskins with animated characters, a very revolutionary form of film technology at the time.
Born in England in 1942, Hoskins had a humble beginning. His father was a bookkeeper and truck driver and his mother was a cook and nursery school teacher. After leaving school at age 15 and taking a string of odd jobs, Hoskins eventually found his calling for acting at the Victoria Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent. He...

Margot Kidder was Lois Lane in Superman, Kim Basinger was Vicki Vale in Batman. But what happened afterwards to their careers, and those of other well-known love interests?
Had been a Hollywood siren since 9 1/2 Weeks in 1986, and cheerfully satirised herself in Wayne's World 2 and Cool World but disaster struck when she pulled out of Boxing Helena, Jennifer Lynch's directorial debut, and had to pay back more than $3m (£1.8m). Her career high point came in 1997 when she won best supporting actress Oscar for La Confidential for, essentially, impersonating Veronica Lake, one of the greatest of all Hollywood sirens. Since then it has all gone a bit flat.

Footage from Ralph Bakshi's animated rendition of the "Lord of the Rings" (1978) has been recovered. Back in the 70s, fans of the filmmaker were left hanging on the rampart's of Helm's deep when the filmmaker-known for "Fritz the Cat," "Wizards," "American Pop" and "Cool World" was not allowed to conclude his animated take on Tolkein's epic story. He got roughly through two-thirds Tolkien's three-part story. Thankfully, Bakshi's son, Eddie Bakshi, has been hard at work rescuing footage from the cutting room floor, restoring and releasing excellent relics of his father's opus. The clips below come from the moment in the story when Gandalf takes an unfortunate tumble, grappling with the Balrog in a violent free fall. The first clip is titled “Gandalf recalls fighting the Balrog” (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.

Terry Gilliam, the man behind such trippy, outlandish cinematic voyages as The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and 12 Monkeys is at it again. The trailer for his latest, The Zero Theorem, has hit the web…and it’s a doozy. The movie looks strange. I mean, really strange. Looks like Clockwork Orange by way of Cool World, with Verhoeven’s Total Recall thrown in, a bit of Blade Runner, a dash of Inception, and props and costumes that were on loan from the local porn studio.
But at least you can tell that it’s by design. Gilliam, with his eccentric eye, knows exactly what he’s doing with this bizarre mish-mash, even if the trailer struggles to summarize what the film is about. Go ahead, take a peak and see how you feel about it.

In Grudge Match, the legendary screen star plays Sally, the heart of the film who is the catalyst for a three decades-old feud between Sylvester Stallone’s “Razor” Sharp and Robert DeNiro’s Billy “The Kid” McDonnen. She sees the good in both men, even if they, and everyone else around them, can not.
Basinger is an Academy Award-winning actress for her work in director Curtis Hanson’s L.A. Confidential, but fans know her for many cult favorite hits of the 80′s through the 90′s including Tim Burton’s Batman, Cool World, Blind Date and Wayne’s World 2. At 60 years old, she also just signed a brand new modeling contract — not bad.
We sat down with the ageless star to talk about Grudge Match, working with heavyweights like Robert DeNiro and Sylvester Stallone, and also her favorite co-star of the bunch. As expected, she’s as lovely as you’d expect her to be.

First man ever to be named “Sexiest Man Alive” twice by People Magazine (1994 and 2000), thrice nominated for acting Oscars for Moneyball, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and Twelve Monkeys, producer of The Tree Of Life and The Departed, and family man to the children he shares with actress Angelina Jolie, versatile actor Brad Pitt latest endeavor is this week’s wildly anticipated World War Z.
Starring in, as well as producing Wwz, Pitt’s other starring vehicles have ranged from Greek hero Achilles in Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy to George Clooney’s forever-eating friend Rusty Ryan in Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’S 11, as well as superhero “Metro Man” in the animated Megamind and Death in Meet Joe Black.
Gee-whiz, we even have a soft spot for his dead-beat – “Don’t condescend me, man” – Floyd in True Romance.
Presently Pitt is working on his next project,...

Last year, word got out that Disney was looking to develop Big Hero 6 as Marvel's first big screen animated film. Since then, the movie has progressed forward with its director Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Disney has given the CG-animated film a release date of November 7th, 2014!
Hall pitched the idea to John Lasseter last year, and apparently he loved what he heard and saw. The 1998 comic series was created by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau, and the story is set in Tokyo. It's about a group of government-sanctioned heroes, specifically “a robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada and his robot companion BayMax, who join a team of superheroes.”
Some new details on the project have come to light thanks to the La Times. It explains one of the big changes in the adaptation is that the story will be moved from Tokyo to the fictional high-tech city...

Gosh, zombies. Never really understood the appeal. I only like horror movies where babysitters run around in high-waisted jeans, and even then, I prefer horror movies that make fun of babysitters in high-waisted jeans. World War Z isn't really a horror movie, but it is a very expensive zombie spectacle (so whatever, it's horror to me).
Brad Pitt stars as a U.N. employee named Gerry Lane who has to stop the fast-acting undead folks from killing civilians, defeating armies, and collapsing governments. I assume he's going to be pretty humorless about the whole operation.
But hey, wait, did I just mention Brad Pitt's name? Because he is an important part of why I bring up this movie. Did you know he is still hot? Dig the trailer below.
First of all: Always nice to see the very talented Mireille Enos. Secondly, wish I could fight it, but the hardened,...

“Hey people, Ralphie needs money to draw. Let’s give him some so he can make a fool of himself again.” — Ralph Bakshi’s Miss America, in the Kickstarter campaign video for his new animated project
Making films has never been easy for Ralph Bakshi. The maverick cartoonist and filmmaker, who became famous — and infamous — after 1972′s smash X-rated ‘toon, Fritz the Cat, never liked to color within the lines, so to speak. He was the anti-Disney back then, filling his stories with provocative themes, raunchy humor, and curvacious broads that would make Russ Meyer blush. His bold 1975 blaxploitation satire...
