- Duncan: And you whose places are the nearest, know We will establish our estate upon Our eldest, Malcolm, whom we name hereafter the Prince of Cumberland.
- Macbeth: [aside] The Prince of Cumberland. That is a step on which I must fall down or else o'er leap... for in my way it lies. Stars... hide your fires. Let not night see my black and deep desires.
- Duncan: No more the Thane of Cawdor shall deceive our bosom interest. Go, announce his present death, and with his title greet Macbeth!
- Macbeth: What's he that was not born of woman? Such a one am I to fear, or none.
- Macduff: Turn, hell hound, turn!
- Macbeth: Of all men else I have avoided thee. But get thee back. My soul is too much charged with blood of thine already. Thou losest labour, I bear a charmèd life, which must not yield to one of woman born.
- Macduff: Despair thy charm, Macduff was from his mother's womb untimely ripped!
- Macbeth: I'll not fight with thee.
- Macduff: Then yield thee, coward!
- Macbeth: I will not yield! Yet I will try the last. Before my body I throw my warlike shield. Lay on, Macduff, And damned be him that first cries, "Hold, enough!"
