Apple TV has produced some top-quality TV shows. Silo, Severance, Ted Lasso, and Hijack are the titles that come to mind when you think of the relatively new streaming service.
But one show that somehow failed to grab viewers' attention was a reimagining of a mid-eighties Steven Spielberg anthology series.
A multi-award-winning original
The original series, which debuted in 1985, was nominated for 12 Emmys and won 5. It also spawned the spin-off animated series Family Dog and the 1987 movie Batteries Not Included, which was originally planned as an episode of the series before it was decided that it would work better as a feature-length film.
There was no complete story arc for the series, instead each episode was a short story in its own right. Think of it as a science fiction version of Tales of the Unexpected and you won't be far off.

The effect of The Simpsons on pop culture can’t be overstated. In the early nineties, the show tapped into the cultural zeitgeist in a way few others had before. Indeed, no other cartoon show could reasonably emulate it- but Hollywood couldn’t help but try. Capitol Critters, Family Dog, and Fish Police were just a few of the shows that tried to be “the new Simpsons.” Still, the only one that really came close was ABC’s The Critic, starring the voice of Jon Lovitz as Jay Sherman, perhaps the world’s least-loved film critic and the subject of this Gone But Not Forgotten episode.
Unlike other wannabe animated hits, The Critic could boast a legit connection to The Simpsons, with it also being a production of James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films. At the same time, creators Al Jean and Mike Reiss had been showrunners on The Simpsons during...

Ralph Eggleston, an animation whiz who was hired by Pixar in the lead-up to the release of “Toy Story,” has died following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 56.
Over the course of his storied career, Eggleston went on to serve in a variety of roles at Pixar, memorably contributing to everything from “Monsters, Inc.” to both “Incredibles” movies to “Inside Out” and “Soul.” (The animation studio didn’t release an official statement but sent an email to staff confirming the news this morning.)

The 21st Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony was billed as a “Return to Hollywood.” Backdrops from classic films dotted the interior of the Ray Dolby Ballroom lobby. Johnny Crawford and his Orchestra kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Hooray for Hollywood.” Even a handful of the evening’s big winners were films that fit the theme perfectly.
As expected, “La La Land” continued its storybook run through awards season, with David Wasco’s team winning for Contemporary Film. In an upset, Wynn Thomas and the team from “Hidden Figures” took home honors in Period Film, despite “Hail, Caesar!” being the only of the category’s nominees to also pick up a nom for Oscars night. “It’s been a long journey to this moment,” said Thomas, who described being nominated at the very first Art Directors Guild award for “Mars Attacks!” “I’m so...

Tomorrowland didn’t do as well as expected this weekend in theaters. Some people celebrated this fact, apparently believing that the movie was the brainchild of George Clooney and that it was a propaganda film about climate change.
They must have seen a different movie than I did.
I’ll admit that, like the Big Hollywood website, I went to the theater with my own set of assumptions and biases. Tomorrowland is my favorite area in the Disney parks, the first place I wanted to go the first time I went (in 1979). I love the work of director Brad Bird, and have since The Family Dog.
And, yeah, I have the hots for George Clooney and I think climate change is an issue deserving action. Only the first of those affects my ticket-buying decisions.
So, the Disney nerd in me loved the movie. But, more important to this column, so did the comics fan.

This may be the hardest review I've ever had to write. After all, I think Brad Bird is a certifiably great filmmaker. I have been a fan of his work as long as I've seen his name on things, starting with "Family Dog," the animated episode of "Amazing Stories." So of course, I walk into his films hoping to like them. The year it was released, "The Incredibles" was my pick as best film, and both "The Iron Giant" and "Ratatouille" have also found spots in my top ten lists at the end of the year. In fact, for years, one of the things I was proudest of in all of the work I've done writing about movies from the early days of Ain't It Cool News to right now involved "The Iron Giant." That film is beloved now, and deservedly so. There was a point, though, when it looked...

Because if it’s not bad enough that the Outlander midseason finale leave its heroine bent over a table with her skirts around her ears and a blade pressed to some very sensitive bits, we now have to wait seven months to see how everything resolves!
Good thing the Starz drama gives us plenty to think about in the interim. Chiefly: Who among us — particularly among those with well-worn copies of Diana Gabaldon’s novel — would’ve thought it possible to feel so much sympathy for Frank, Claire’s abandoned-in-the-future husband?...

It is the day fans have been asking for since 2004, and for many years, it was a day that I was sure would never happen. In the decade since the first film was released, Brad Bird has probably answered the question about whether or not there would be an "Incredibles" sequel a hundred times, and each time, he's been very blunt. The problem was always coming up with a story that was worth telling again with those characters. It would be easy to crank out a dozen movies where we just spend time with Bob, Helen, Dash, Violet, and the deeply freaky Jack Jack, and I'm sure audiences would have been happy to watch those films. But Brad Bird is not a guy who had a lot of patience for business as usual. Before "The Iron Giant," I knew Brad primarily from his work on "Family Dog" and as a screenwriter,...

Survey: Have you ever been eaten by a dinosaur? Yeah, neither have I. Good for us.
From watching each of the three "Jurassic Park" movies, though — "Jurassic Park" (1993), "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" (1997) and "Jurassic Park III" (2001) — it sure looks like getting eaten by a dinosaur hurts pretty bad, doesn't it? Let's just agree that there are better ways to go than being eaten by a dinosaur. Glad we got that out of the way.
But what, you ask, are the worst ways to be eaten by a dinosaur, as demonstrated by the three films? I can't believe you asked that, for two reasons: 1) We coincidentally happen to have a ranking of the nine most horrific deaths in the "Jurassic Park" movies set up for you below, in case you asked, and 2) You're messed up in the head, man. It's hard to say goodbye to a childhood pet, so we can understand why Victor Frankenstein (Charlie Tahan), the protagonist at the center of Tim Burton's "Frankenweenie," would go to such extreme measures to bring his dog back to life. But in typical Burton fashion, messing with the dead is never a good idea, as we find out in this newly released theatrical trailer.
"Frankenweenie" marks Burton's return to animation. The last time the director embarked on a stop-motion project was 2005's "Corpse Bride," and like that film, he's once again bringing the dead to life. "Frankenweenie," a remake of a featurette Burton made in 1984, follows young Victor as he attempts to reanimate his beloved dog, Sparky, after a freak accident claims his life.
Thanks to his very creepy science teacher -- and a lucky bout of lightning -- and Victor is able to bring Sparky back to the world of the living.

"Frankenweenie" is alive!
Tim Burton is returning to animation with his latest macabre movie, "Frankenweenie." The last time the director embarked on a stop-motion project was 2005's "Corpse Bride," and like that film he's once again bringing the dead to life. "Frankenweenie," a remake of a featurette Burton made in 1984, follows Victor Frankenstein (Charlie Tahan) as he attempts to reanimate his beloved -- yet sadly dead -- dog, Sparky.
The film stars a few of Burton's favorite people, including Winona Ryder ("Beetlejuice," "Edward Scissorhands") as Elsa van Helsing, Victor's somber classmate, and Catherine O'Hara ("The Nightmare Before Christmas") as Susan Frankenstein, Victor's Mom. Shockingly, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are nowhere to be heard in the black and white, stop-motion flick.
If Sparky looks familiar, that's probably because Burton borrowed heavily from his design from the central character of 1993's animated series, "Family Dog."

Disney has unveiled a series of character for this Halloween's "Frankenweenie," a black-and-white stop-motion feature from Tim Burton and Disney that was based on a short film of his that got him fired from the studio back in the mid-eighties (seriously). The posters and characters look appropriately Tim Burton-y (maybe a little too much – some of the characters seem like slightly redressed designs from "The Corpse Bride" and the dog looks very "Family Dog"-esque). In other Disney animation news, the studio has quietly slipped a new "Cars Toon" short film onto iTunes and Amazon, which ties in directly to the new Carsland section of Disney California Adventure.
Firstly, the "Frankweenie" stuff – it looks pretty great. We get a look at all the major characters, both human and animal (the titular resurrected pooch is named Sparky) and while this stuff is pretty basic, it is kind of a thrill...

In a story on Kristen Bell joining the cast of Jennifer Getzinger's cinematic adaptation of Neil Labute's play "Some Girls," The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed that the actress-formerly-known-as-Veronica Mars will "provide the speaking and singing voice" as the lead in Disney's upcoming feature "Frozen," which means she will play the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale character the Snow Queen (first published way back in 1845). Additionally, the trade states that Warner Bros. and Weed Road (Akiva Goldsman's WB-based production shingle) have picked up the forthcoming graphic novel "Bolivar" for Irish animator Kealan O'Rourke to write and direct.
Tucked away in the "Some Girls"/"Frozen" story is the tidbit that Chris Buck, a legendary animator who worked on everything from Brad Bird's "Family Dog" episode of "Amazing Stories" to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" to "Little Mermaid," before co-directing Disney's lush 1999 animated feature "Tarzan" (with Kevin Lima), will direct.

Before Pee-Wee or Batman, Edward Scissorhands or Ed Wood, there was Frankenweenie, the 1984 live-action short that would introduce many to the warped innocence of director Tim Burton. After almost three decades, he’s returning to the story of a young boy who brings his beloved dead pet back to life in a full-length 3D animated feature set to release in October.
For those wondering what the film will look like, a new poster just came out and the design smacks of old school Burton. The 8-lb. bear was born Nov. 22 at Denmark's Scandinavian Wildlife Park, but his mother, Ilka, could not produce enough milk to feed her new cub. The zoo stepped in, and with caretaker Frank Vigh-Larsen at the helm, staffers have been hand-rearing Siku ever since. The constant care includes lots of bottle-feeding of the young bear - whose name means "sea ice" - and watching as Siku sleeps, rolls around and sticks out his tongue. I could have put a picture of Alvin and the Chipmunks here. Thank me!
The big story was crowded houses in limited release for the return of Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) in Mission: Impossible 4. (The four is silent or pronounced "Gost Pro•toh•call".) I'm eager to see it myself, not because of that prologue to The Dark Knight Rises that's attached in some theaters but because... director Brad Bird! He hasn't let us down yet: Family Dog, The Incredibles, Iron Giant, Ratatouille! So curious to see how he handles flesh and blood actors instead of drawings and pixels.

My beloved cat has had some health issues this weekend so time has been short and I've been majorly occupied (hence Oscar chart update/ column delay). But here's a quick bit about a beloved fictional pet, "Sparky".
• Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, due in theaters less than a year from now, is a remake of sorts. That's all Burton does these days but at least this time he's reworking something from his own imagination. Frankenweenie was originally a short in 1984 and if you ever get a chance to see that one, do so. It was from the time frame when Burton was The young director to watch, making magic every time... or every other time. Damn. Whatever. From 1982 through 1994 it was all spellbinding. I'd even throw 1996 in there but I realize Mars Attacks! isn't for everyone. Ack!
• I'm so pleased this will be a black and white stop-motion picture. With so...

Celebrating Halloween, Walt Disney Pictures have decided to unleash a sneak peak of Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, introducing Sparky the dog and the hero Victor at work using the power of science to save his furry friend in a hair-raising experiment.
Based on an early Burton short, Frankenweenie is a ‘heartwarming’ tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all turn on the monstrous mutt.
The stop-motion animated film has been shot in black and white and rendered in 3D, which tonally brings it back to the short film, and hopefully the 3D/stop-motion combo will give it the same tactile feel...

There's something incredibly exciting about the phrase "anything is possible." Waiting for something that could be anything is an exercise for your imagination. That infinite possibility, coupled with wild speculation and prediction, is ninety percent of the fun of Mondo's Mystery Movies. Mondo, as you may know, is the ever-growing poster boutique associated with the Alamo Drafthouse. In April Mondo began a project called Mystery Movies. People buy a ticket for a movie that won't be announced until they're in the theater. That is coupled with a limited edition poster that will only ever be available at the event. So imagine buying a ticket to one of these things and speculating what it could be. You throw out suggestions with your fellow attendees, laughing at wild ones and nodding at more likely ones. Finally, you sit down for the film and all is revealed. Does it live up to your expectations?...

Would you like to buy some lemonade ... from a world-famous actress? That's what a few unsuspecting Londoners did over the weekend when Gwyneth Paltrow and her children set up a sidewalk lemonade stand. Yes, it was really her - wearing Wayfarers, but unmistakable. She stood with daughter Apple, 7, and son Moses, 5, and other children over a setup of cardboard boxes as they sold lemonade and what appeared to be chocolate chip cookies. Related: Gwyneth Paltrow Fears Family Dog Will Be Called 'Daffy'a handwritten sign taped over a box read, "Lemonade and Snaks 1 £ each," followed by "Mony raised to Rspca." The Rspca,...

And How Young Sherlock Holmes Unexpectedly Paved The Way For Pixar
The story of how Pixar began is a fascinating one when you consider the creative risks that a young John Lasseter took that ultimately cost him his job at a company he would later (practically) run! This, somewhat Shakespearean tale, can be punctuated quite well by a series of films that all, in some way, lend themselves to the development of the Pixar we know and love…
1. The Fox and the Hound (1981)
In 1975 the California Institute of the Arts set up a new programme for animation, taught by three members of Disney’s ‘Nine Old Men’, whilst that is impressive in itself the students they taught in that inaugural year included John Lasseter, Brad Bird, John Musker, Henry Selick and Tim Burton with artists like Joe Ranft, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter.

Breaking: Zach Galifianakis is much funnier than Miley Cyrus. Nice recovery, SNL. The Hangover star returned to Studio 8H for a second hosting stint last night, gifting us with plenty of fine characters and skits. He also burdened us with the most cliched final sketch in recent memory, and that’s something of an accomplishment. Prepare to cross your eyes and whine like musical guest Jessie J!
Best Sketch: Monologue

Created by Brad Bird, 'Family Dog' is the story of an average suburban family 'the Binsfords', as told through the eyes of their dog. It first appeared as an episode of the TV show Amazing Stories, then was expanded into a very short-lived series of its own which was produced by Steven Spielberg and Tim Burton.
It was written and directed by Brad Bird (who also did the voice of the dog), with music by Danny Elfman and Steve Bartek. 'Family Dog' is often considered to be a landmark production that, combined with films like 'Oliver & Company' and 'The Little Mermaid', led to the 1990s renaissance in animation.

The new trailer to Almodóvar's Broken Embraces is up over at Guardian. Looks terrific and much like other Pedro gems such as Law of Desire and Bad Education it appears to be cinematic in all senses of the word (visually, thematically, environmentally).
It's less than two minutes long but it gives the impression that the whole movie consists of shots of Penélope Cruz through screens, mirrors, doorways and her own hair. Which is maybe the best thing a movie could consist of these days. It opens Stateside in 140 days but many of you overseas readers have already had the opportunity to see it. I'm green with envy but wearing red in keeping with the Almodóvar theme.

President Barack Obama reveals new information about the first family's search for a dog. Obama told CNN's Anderson Cooper during an interview Tuesday that the family is still undecided about what kind of dog to adopt, but said the much anticipated decision won't take place until the spring. Last month, Obama revealed that his girls, Malia and Sasha, had narrowed the list of dog choices to two breeds: a Labradoodle or a Portugese water hound. Photo: Afp/Getty Images
