The cast for FX’s “Alien” series continues to grow, with Deadline reporting that actor Moe Bar-El (The Peripheral) joins in recurring capacity. More interestingly, the announcement gives a bit more insight to the many of the characters in the series.
The series is “set in a time period before Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley and is the first story in the franchise that takes place on Earth, roughly 70 years in the future.” FX originally noted, “Expect a scary thrill ride set not too far in the future here on Earth.”
Bar-El joins previously announced cast members Babou Ceesay (“Guerrilla,” “Damilola”), Jonathan Ajayi (“Wonder Woman 1984,” “Noughts and Crosses”), Erana James (“Uproar,” “The Wilds”), Lily Newmark (“Pin Cushion,” “Sex Education”), Diêm Camille (“Washington Black,” “Alex Rider 3”), and Adrian Edmondson, Timothy Olyphant (“Fargo”), David Rysdahl (“Fargo”), Essie Davis (The Babadook), Alex Lawther (The End of the F*cking World), Samuel Blenkin (“Black Mirror...

It’s been 20 years since Jennifer Lopez played her most iconic film role: the late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla in Selena. Amid all the Quintanilla amor going on this year, including a Hollywood Walk of Fame star and Google Doodle on the search engine’s homepage, Lopez reflected on the internationally beloved musician during an interview with Spotify’s “¡Viva Latino!” on Nov. 30.
When asked what her favorite movie performance to date has been, the Shades of Blue star told the podcast it was playing the Tex-Mex Queen. “It will never lose its impact,” she said, referring to the 1997 biopic.

Casting Chris Brown as a controversial musician in black-ish‘s third season seemed like a natural fit, series creator Kenya Barris tells TVLine, but some of the reactions the episode garnered “saddened” the executive producer.
Brown played Rich Youngsta in a March installment that found Dre collaborating with the fictional rapper on an ad campaign that played heavily on black stereotypes. After some pushback from Ruby and Bow, and after watching Jack engage in some of Rich Youngsta’s less-than-ideal behavior, Dre revamped the ad.

Amongst staggering aural and visual assault, perhaps one of the quietest aspects of Dunkirk (2017, directed by Christopher Nolan) are its costumes – and this is to its credit. Dunkirk is the type of film that requires you to engage quickly with everything you see on screen. Jeffrey Kurland’s costume design is masterful in this regard. A sea of subtly differentiated green and brown with the pop of naval uniforms and briefly glimpsed civilian wear. This is 1940 at its most spare and rudimentary.
Here, Jeffrey Kurland chats exclusively to Clothes on Film about his process for creating the world of Dunkirk:
Spoilers Throughout
Clothes on Film: How did you go about researching the many uniforms seen in the film?
Jeffrey Kurland: As I normally would do. In the beginning it’s kind of a one man job. I trawl the internet, I go to libraries – I actually have my own library I use.

The Simpsons has pastiched hundreds of movies in its time. From Hitchcock to Kubrick to Disney, we select our top 30 favourites...
The Simpsons has a long history of peppering its stories with pop culture references, and some of the show’s finest gags stem from the world of cinema. These have ranged from the briefest of quotes, to full on shot-for-shot parodies and extended episode-long homages.
Most striking in trying to put this list together was the sheer volume of movie references there are to choose from. In pretty much any given episode of The Simpsons, there are at least a couple, with nods to James Bond, 2001: A Space Odyssey and the work of Alfred Hitchcock proving three of the most regular candidates. The tributes to numerous great horror movies in the show’s Treehouse Of Horror episodes could have been used to fill this list all on their own.

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

Swansea made history by winning at Old Trafford thanks to Wayne Routledge’s early chip and a late Wilfried Bony header. Manchester United fell at the first Fa Cup hurdle despite Javier Hernandez scoring as substitute Fabio was sent off.
Defeat for the Red Devils – their fifth at home in all competitions this term – increases the pressure on David Moyes. United are still in the Capital One Cup, but look short of strength to defend their Premier League title and make a big splash in the Champions League.
Wayne Rooney joined a lengthy injury list for the hosts as Moyes made six changes from the home loss to Tottenham Hotspur on New Year’s Day. Defenders Nemnaja Vidic and Patrice Evra were rested completely whilst Michael Carrick, David De Gea and Adnan Janzuaj dropped to the bench.

Manchester United take on Swansea in the Fa Cup third round knowing they have never lost a home meeting with the South Wales side.
A 4-1 away victory for the Red Devils at the Liberty Stadium on the opening day of the Premier League season ensured David Moyes won his first competitive game in charge. Both he and Michael Laudrup have depleted squads for this encounter as United and the Swans are missing players from their attacks.
The Red Devils saw a run of six straight wins in all competitions stopped by Tottenham Hotspur on New Year’s Day. Home form is a concern for Moyes as his team have only record victory in two of the last five at Old Trafford.
Swansea meanwhile are on seven-match winless streak and picked up just a single Premier League point during the festive period.

Michelle Keegan was left confused this morning during an interview with Lorraine Kelly. The Coronation Street actress - who is rumoured to be dating former Towie star Mark Wright - was asked by Kelly about her relationship with Alex Reid. An uncomfortable looking Keegan responded that she preferred to keep her private life to herself. However, she later realised what Kelly had asked and joked about the mistake on Twitter. She wrote: "Oh my god just realised what Lorraine asked me at the end of that interview. "Alex Reid where the Hell did that come from?! Hahaha!!!! X." (more)...

Swansea City recorded a historic victory against their equally skilled ball playing counterparts, Arsenal, in a fantastic fixture at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.
Thierry Henry‘s potential return to Premier League action was not the only highly anticipated aspect of this game, with many looking forward to the prospect of two of the most effective passing teams in the league locking horns to see who were the true pass masters.
The visitors didn’t take long in stamping their authority on the game with Robin van Persie putting Arsenal ahead after just four minutes. Andrey Arshavin’s perfectly weighted pass found the Premier League’s top scorer, who shrugged off the best efforts of Steven Caulker to dismantle his attack on goal, to fire past Michel Vorm in the Swansea goal.
Van Persie wasn’t finished their either as he appeared to be a threat to the scoreline with every attack he made,...

Chelsea will be desperate for a win in their 3pm kick-off against Swansea this afternoon and trying to forget their loss to Man Utd last weekend as they were beaten 3-1 at Old Trafford. A positive to take out of the game for Blues boss Andre Villa-Boas was that Fernando Torres scored and looked a threat throughout the game. A Super Sunday defeat is always hard to take but they should realistically be getting a win over Swansea which would push them closer to the top 2 Man City and Man Utd. However, they did beat Fulham in midweek in a League Cup tie which will boost their confidence up a little bit more.
Swansea will be heading into this game also full of confidence as they...

What better place to start this week than at the beginning? Kind of like Genesis, nothing to do with Phil Collins mind, I refer to that story of God creating the world in seven days. I’m not here for theological debate mind you, despite being told I am quite the pub philosopher.
Following a similar tack to Genesis, with Arsene Wenger assuming the role of God, the Frenchman plucked Arsenal from the doldrums of Bruce Rioch. Light from where there was once only dark, creating stars from nothing and so on and so forth.
The simile would be even more fitting if Genesis then detailed God’s master plan of removing the stars and replacing them with eco-friendly, energy saving light bulbs, a result of the seventh day resting on transfer deadline day. Why one would only be able to purchase light bulbs during the transfer window I don’t know,...

While The Black List may be getting most of the press from entertainment news circles when it's announced in December, there's another compilation of the best new ideas and writing being offered to Hollywood movie studios and producers. It's called The Hit List (Thl), and it differs from The Black List in one fundamental way: whereas The Black List (Tbl) is a list of the top unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, several of the screenplays on that list have been purchased or are in development.
Take a look at last year's Black List (Part 1 is here, Part 2 is here) and here we are, one year later, and several of the scripts that made the 2009 list will be coming out in 2011 -- or have already been released (like The Social Network or Due Date). The Hit List is different in that it seeks to give attention to spec screenplays -- that is,...
