Synopsis (from Rotten Tomatoes)
Godfather of Harlem tells a story inspired by infamous Harlem crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker), who in the early 1960s returned from eleven years in prison to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles. Season 2 finds Bumpy battling the New York Crime Families for control of the lucrative and murderous “French Connection,” the pipeline for heroin that runs from Marseilles to New York Harbor. This story about Giancarlo Esposito first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Few actors have had a more crowded pandemic than four-time Emmy nominee Giancarlo Esposito. His role as the fearsome Moff Gideon in “The Mandalorian,” for which he received a guest-actor nomination last year, expanded to a supporting part in Season 2 on Disney+; he played 1960s congressman Adam Clayton Powell in the Epix drama series “Godfather of Harlem,” which filmed its second season during the pandemic, and CEO Stan Edgar in Amazon Prime’s “The Boys,” which did the same; and he’s currently in production on the sixth and final season of FX’s “Better Call Saul,” continuing the role as fried-chicken mogul Gus Fring that began on “Breaking Bad.”
This is supposed to be a time when things have slowed down and production is difficult. But I guess you’ve had a busy pandemic.

Free’s short film won the Oscar on Sunday night
Travon Free, the director of this year’s Oscar winner for Best Live Action Short “Two Distant Strangers,” has signed a first look producing deal with Endeavor Content.
Free directed “Two Distant Strangers” along with Martin Desmond Roe, and the film that was acquired by Netflix tells the story of a Black man trying to get home to his dog who is stopped by police and killed, only to find himself caught in a “Groundhog Day”-style infinite time loop in which he relives the morning and gets killed by the same police officer over and over again no matter what he does differently. The film starred Joey Bada$$, Zaria and Andrew Howard.

For too long, film has focused on black suffering. Can Radha Blank’s new comedy usher in a new era of representation?
“I’ve been working on this social commentary about the white gaze’s eroticism of black pain,” says struggling playwright and would-be rapper Radha Blank in The Forty-Year-Old Version. That’s great material for her music but it is not what her white theatre producers want to hear. They feel her play about Harlem gentrification could really do with a new white character (“We need to grab the core audience”). And couldn’t the teens do a rap number? And wouldn’t she rather write a musical about Harriet Tubman? Blank channels her rage into her rhymes, not least her song Poverty Porn: “No happy blacks in the plotlines, please / But a crane shot of Big Momma crying on her knees / For her dead son, the b-ball star,...

Bill Withers got a late start. He was nearing 30 when he began writing songs on a cheap guitar between shifts at an aircraft-parts factory. “I figured out that you didn’t need to be a virtuoso to accompany yourself,” he told Rolling Stone in 2015. Star’s Meagan Good, Empire’s Grace Byers, Mother’s Milk’s Jerrie Johnson and I Am The Night’s Shoniqua Shandai are to star in Amazon’s half-hour comedy from Girls Trip writer Tracy Oliver.
Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee is set to direct the first two episodes of the ten-part series, which comes from Universal Television, and Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions.
In July, Amazon Studios has ordered the female-focused comedy, which was created, written and executive produced by Oliver. The show, formerly known as Harlem, is a single-camera comedy following the lives of four black women – friends from their college days at NYU – as they navigate sex, relationships and chasing their dreams.
Meagan Good plays Camille, a stylish, sunny professor of anthropology course “Sex and Love” at Columbia University. While Camille has extensive knowledge about the dating and mating norms of many cultures, she has...

Having been an (albeit relaxed) fan of Dolly Parton for some while, I was so excited to watch her new Netflix original series Heartstrings and the series gave me everything it needed to and more!
Heartstrings completely captures the essence of Dolly Parton through and through. This means that if you are a fan of hers then you Have To watch this series as it revolves around her career, songs and life. Each episode is based on important themes that I know Dolly personally feels passionate about such as religion, the supernatural, family and feminism. The latter being one of the key themes in this series, one very memorable scene on this idea is where an impassioned character gives a strong message about the ‘damsel in distress’ trope. All these themes are very on-brand for Dolly Parton and it was great to see a show that was so specific to...

Exclusive: A remarkable, little known slice of Black American history is coming to light with Boley, an premium event series in development at Universal Television from writer Dianne Houston and producer Rudy Langlais.
Hailed as “television’s first premium Black western,” Boley is inspired by the e true story of an early 20th century black utopia, Boley, Oklahoma, which was established in 1904 as one of the largest and most thriving black towns in the country.
In 1930s Oklahoma, a group of proud Black citizens and businessmen took up arms against notorious gangster Pretty Boy Floyd and his band of outlaws to defend their community. Boley was a bourgeoning, prosperous town in the middle of the American Depression and its citizens were determined to protect what they had built. They were successful.

Twenty-eight years ago, John Singleton’s feature debut “Boyz n the Hood” (1991) opened a cinematic window into the bleak realities of life in South Central Los Angeles. It also created something entirely new: While Spike Lee paved the way, “Boyz n the Hood” arguably made Singleton the first studio filmmaker to find mainstream commercial success while representing a little-represented part of society. By tackling a very thorny subject in a way that had rarely been seen in a film of its caliber, it humanized its characters as victims of larger systemic issues rather than stereotypes.
“When we first did the movie, we felt like we was teaching America about a part of itself that they don’t see,” co-star of the film Ice Cube told MTV in 2011. “We was teaching you about people like Doughboy and why he is the way he is.”

Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings will get a tug from Bellamy Young (Scandal) and Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest), among many other TV stars, later this year.
