Midway through the “Girlboss” premiere, Britt Robertson’s Sophia Amoruso walks down the street, tears pouring down her face, angrily shouting into her phone. She just got fired, and it first appears as though she feels the dismissal unjust. But then, just as she’s about to tick off a third reason her boss sucks, Sophia stops herself, and says, “Why am I such an asshole?”
It’s a question that had been building throughout our introduction to Sophia and asked in a moment that feels primed for self-discovery. In the span of 15 minutes, she’s been inexplicably cruel to her father, invited herself into a free, semi-permanent residency with a stranger, and made herself unreasonably late for work. She was fired not just for being perpetually late, but also for taking a personal phone call on company time, stealing her boss’ lunch, and unapologetically eating it in front of her.

The retrospective Frank Capra, The American Dreamer is showing April 10 - May 31, 2017 in the United Kingdom.Frank CapraFrank Capra has fallen badly out of fashion in recent decades. While still well-known for the extraordinary Depression-era purple patch that produced It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), the critics have rarely been kind. His work is routinely derided as “Capra-corn” for its perceived sentimentality and “fairy tale” idealism while the man himself is written off in favour of contemporaries Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges and Ernst Lubitsch.Elliot Stein, writing in Sight & Sound in 1972, attacked Capra’s “fantasies of good will, which at no point conflict with middle-class American status quo values”, arguing that his “shrewdly commercial manipulative tracts” consist of little more than “philistine-populist notions and greeting-card sentiments”. Pauline Kael found him “softheaded,” Derek Malcolm a huckster hawking “cosily absurd fables.” To an extent,...

Niche subscription video on-demand (Svod) services have become a major trend over the past year, and for American consumers, it is time to another another name to the list of platforms that offer hyper-specific content to viewers. Walter Presents, a UK-based Svod service that specializes in international drama, has announced its plan to launch in the Us.
The Walter in Walter Presents is Walter Iuzzolino, an Italian TV producer who curates his service’s library. To choose the Walter Presents lineup, Iuzzolino reportedly watched 3,500 hours of television, ultimately picking a handful of dramas and comedies from Europe and Latin America to distribute to his subscribers. The select few include Spin, a series described in a press release as the “French House of Cards,” as well as Blue Eyes, which counted more than a million viewers in its native Sweden.

In our peak television age, National Geographic hasn’t made much of an impact. It seems that they’re hoping to change that, however, with Genius, their first dramatic series starring Geoffrey Rush as none other than Albert Einstein. The anthology drama follows the world’s greatest innovators one season at a time, and viewers can now get a glimpse at what season 1 holds in store with the show’s newest trailer.
Adapted from Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography Einstein: His Life and Universe, along with some of Einstein’s personal letters, Genius hopes to become what Mad Men was for AMC and what House of Cards became for Netflix. It’s a high-profile new dramatic series and the network certainly isn’t slouching, even bringing in Ron Howard to direct the pilot. Go big or go home, right?

Netflix's pricy royal family drama The Crown has stand-out performances from John Lithgow and Matt Smith, but lacks story...
Warning: contains spoilers.
The great cliche about the British is that we’re a stoic lot; emotionally reserved and only ever prone to bouts of ‘hayfever’ when Bambi’s mum dies.
Netflix’s £100m production of The Crown tries to buck this trope with a ten-part series dramatising the personal and political events surrounding the first decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign from 1952.
One part Downton Abbey, one part House Of Cards (the original of course), The Crown never quite decides if it wants to commit itself to a political drama or total supposition about the inner workings of the Court of St James's.
Written by Peter Morgan, the identity struggle at the heart of the series is not hard to explain. Morgan made his name as...

Chicago – Separately, you love all these movie star icons and funny people – Daniel Radcliffe, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman, Lizzy Caplan and Dave Franco. Together, they add up to a terrible sequel, “Now You See Me 2.”
Rating: 1.5/5.0
There was no need to make the sequel “Now You See Me 2,” and the filmmakers and lead actors went out and proved it. As a boilerplate, the plot is exactly the same from the first film – a band of rogue magicians (yes, magicians) called The Four Horseman are not only David Copperfield-like entertainers, they are superheroes saving the earth (for some reason). In this outing, they are set up as some kind of anti-heroes, but they are so “above it all” that the outcome for them is exactly predictable. If a screenplays sets out to make its characters all god-like, then what chance does even Daniel “Harry Potter” Radcliffe and the great Michael Caine (portraying villains) have? My wish was for them to have a large sock with manure in it, to at least embarrass the arrogant Horseman. But they were content to be defeated (spoiler alert) with no manure in sight, except the film itself.
The Four Horsemen have fled underground after the events in the first film (as well they should have). They are both the magicians and their facilitators, including Danny (Jesse Eisenberg), Dylan (Mark Ruffalo), Jack (Dave Franco), Merritt (Woody Harrelson) and Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman). Female magic doer Henley has flown the coop, so daffy Lula (Lizzy Caplan) joins the gang.
It seems that an evil tech billionaire named Walter (Daniel Radcliffe) is trying to lure the Horsemen back to the surface, and actually kidnaps them with the help of Merritt’s twin brother Chase (Harrelson, again). Behind all this nefarious activity is Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine), the antagonist from the first film. From China to London the Horsemen ride, until what’s up their sleeve is revealed.
”Now You See Me 2” opens everywhere on June 10th. Featuring Dave Franco, Daniel Radcliffe, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman and Lizzy Caplan. Screenplay by Ed Solomon. Directed by Jon M. Chu. Rated “PG-13”

"Bloodline" might be the best show you haven't watched yet. The Netflix drama hasn't earned the same pop-culture buzz as the streaming site's other shows like "House Of Cards" and "Orange Is The New Black," but it deserves to. It's a terrifically layered, emotionally complex soap opera (that term is not a slight), and it's back for a new season where the members of once-great Rayburn family are now busy burying the dead and the secrets that go with it. One of the greatest movies ever made and arguably the best mob movie of all time turns 25 today. Goodfellas, Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece, is organized crime 101. It redefined the genre and gave way to countless movies and televisions shows that put a spotlight on the anti-heroes we now have the habit of cheering for.
Walter White (Breaking Bad), Dexter Morgan (Dexter), Frank Underwood (House of Cards), and Jax Teller (Sons of Anarchy) are just a few examples of changing ideas of what makes for a “bad” guy. Don’t worry though, that doesn’t mean you’re a bad person, it just means the way we view characters, or rather the way they are presented to us, has changed drastically and for the better.
My first viewing of Goodfellas was on late-night TV. Luckily it was an uncensored version; every other word was “f*ck” and every other scene was more brutal than the last,...

The age of the TV anti-hero may be drawing to a close, but the TV anti-heroine is just getting started.

In a land overrun by ruthless creatures that hunt by sound, even the faintest whimper can lead to your death in Tim Lebbon's The Silence, a new horror novel hitting shelves later this month. Titan Books has provided us with an exclusive excerpt from Lebbon's latest to share with Daily Dead readers, and we also have a look at two recent 31 images revealed by Rob Zombie, as well as details on the zombie series, Fight of the Living Dead, which is now available to watch in its entirety on BlackBoxTV.
Tim Lebbon's The Silence: "In the darkness of a underground cave system, blind creatures hunt by sound. Then there is light, there are voices, and they feed... Swarming from their prison, the creatures thrive and destroy. To scream, even to whisper, is to summon death. As the hordes lay waste to Europe, a girl watches to see if they will cross the sea.

A few weeks ago HBO and then CBS announced that they would launch stand-alone online services in U.S. in 2015. Before that, Netflix had made known that it would start producing features, crushing theatrical release windows once and for all, after it had contributed to the change of the patterns of attention and the way TV series are made by releasing its House of Cards episodes all at once, as a 13-hour movie. ‘Now the real shakeout begins’, wrote Ted Hope in Hollywood Reporter. ‘We are witnessing the march from once lucrative legacy practices built around titles to a new focus on community.’ Michael Wolff, writing also in the Hollywood Reporter, disagrees: ‘Streaming services from the two networks don’t signal television’s capitulation to Netflix and the web; it’s actually the opposite, as the medium expands yet again to gobble up more revenue.’ And in that sense, he says,...

Because it's NBC's turn to air the Primetime Emmy Awards this year, and because the Peacock would understandably rather air its lucrative Sunday night NFL package in September, the ceremony will take place in late August again. And as an added wrinkle, this year's ceremony will actually happen on a Monday, August 25 at 8 p.m., with Seth Meyers hosting. Between now and then, Dan and I will be making our picks for both who should and will win many of the major categories — if you're wagering, keep in mind that Dan tends to be much better at predicting the winners than I am, but also that he was just as flummoxed as I by last year's winners like Jeff Daniels, Merritt Wever and Bobby Cannavale — concluding with our predictions for Outstanding Drama Series. To avoid a conflict with Sunday Night Football, NBC moved the 2014 Emmy Awards telecast up a month, to August 25. But in swerving clear of the football juggernaut, the Emmys steered right into the lane of the landmark cultural occasion of late August: the MTV VMAs, scheduled for one day prior. It got us thinking: What if we took things to their logical conclusion and handed MTV control of the Emmys, as well? Using categories from both the VMAs and their summertime counterpart, the MTV Movie Awards, we've imagined what would happen if the cable network was in charge of handing...

Hey, ever hear the one about how we’re living in a “Golden Age of Television”? Of course you have. It’s a cliché so often repeated by now that it has the ring of well-duh irrefutable truth. And even the staunchest holdouts, proud to not know their Walter Whites from their Red Reznikovs, can’t deny the seismic changes in the TV landscape that have occurred over the last few years. You don’t have to be involved in those watercooler conversations to know that traditional outlets like HBO, Showtime, FX and more recently online services like Netflix, Amazon Instant and Hulu have changed the way we consume television. But while much ink and many pixels have been expended talking about how we access TV, how we discuss it with peers and generally engage with it differently now, not so much has been said about how those changes might...

The Emmys Outstanding Drama category is always a painful experience for any TV addict. How can you possibly choose only one show from all your favourites?
2014's list is even more painful than normal. Normally, you'd expect the final run of something as spectacular as Breaking Bad to stroll to victory.
However, there's the small matter of Game of Thrones season four, the rise and rise of House of Cards and the jaw-dropping True Detective to think about.
Emmys Outstanding Drama 2014 shortlist:
1. The fan favourite...Game of Thrones
More deaths, more destruction, more twists than a King Size Curly Wurly. The HBO fantasy series' fanbase continues to grow every year - how much longer can the Emmys ignore everything about the show, barring Peter Dinklage?
2. The British are coming... Downton Abbey

A few days ago The Wire posed the question of why comics like Amy Schumer, Key and Peele, and "Portlandia"'s Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein were submitting themselves to the Emmy nominations process as supporting performers. Surely the star of "Inside Amy Schumer" is a lead performer on the series that bears her own name, isn't she?
Turns out Emmy rules consider a variety show's cast to be all equals, so none of the performers can submit themselves as leads. But it also looked like a good strategic move, since otherwise, these performers would be competing in the lead category alongside such popular hosts as Jon Stewart and David Letterman.

Last summer, AMC tried to launch a new show in the hour after Breaking Bad, hoping that the millions of viewers watching and tweeting about Walter White would keep tuning in. But Low Winter Sun was a bonafide flop, a critical and ratings fiasco, and the name itself became a sort of punchline to certain snotty TV viewers. Rather than helping launch the new show, its proximity to Breaking Bad only magnified Low Winter Sun’s shortcomings. It became the poster child for poor quality “quality” television, the skeleton of a dark cable drama with none of the skill or soul needed to sustain itself. Since rebranding itself as a prestige TV showcase with the launch of Mad Men in 2007, AMC has hosted its share of critical gems (Breaking Bad), popular hits (The Walking Dead), and forgettable duds (Low Winter Sun). But its most recent series — The Killing, Hell on Wheels, and Turn – have failed to break out — so there’s some additional pressure on Halt and Catch Fire, which premiered Sunday night.
Set in 1983, the show revolves around Lee Pace’s Joe MacMillan, a dynamic former Ibm executive who wants to build a fledgling Dallas-based computer company into an outfit that can go toe to toe with Big Blue.

Starz has picked up a two season, 20-episode order of half-hour scripted comedy series Blunt Talk from Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) and Jonathan Ames (Bored to Death) and starring Patrick Stewart. The series follows British newsman Walter Blunt (Stewart) on a mission to conquer American cable news by sharing his opinion and guidance, even when they are not wanted. Add a dysfunctional news staff, numerous ex-wives and children, and an alcoholic manservant, and you’ve got a recipe for comedy gold.
“I’m beyond thrilled to be working with Jonathan Ames and Sir Patrick Stewart,” said Seth Macfarlane in a statement.

Blunt Talk, a live-action comedy series from Seth MacFarlane and Bored To Death creator Jonathan Ames starring Patrick Stewart (Star Trek, X-Men), has landed at Starz with a 20-episode, straight-to-series, two-season order for a 2015 premiere. The project hails from Media Rights Capital, which yielded a similar straight-to-series, two-season pickup from Netflix for its drama House Of Cards. The comedy project was recently taken out, garnering interest from multiple networks. There was some behind the scenes back-and-forth on who would produce the series as MacFarlane is under a very rich overall deal at 20th Century Fox TV. The TV studio, which is behind all other MacFarlane comedy series, is currently not involved in this one but I hear the issue has not been completely resolved yet. MacFarlane has very strong ties to Mrc, which was behind his YouTube original series Cavalcade Of Cartoon Comedy as well as features Ted and A Million Ways To Die In The West...

Us television in the 21st century has been dominated by the anti-hero - from The Sopranos to Breaking Bad to Mad Men to House of Cards, we love to see leading characters break away from accepted moral codes and stir up some trouble.
Billy Bob Thornton's dangerous drifter Lorne Malvo is one such anti-hero and he's at the heart of Fargo - the new TV series inspired by the Coen brothers' 1996 movie.
Martin Freeman - who plays Lorne's victim and part-accomplice Lester Nygaard - spoke to Digital Spy about two of his favourite anti-heroes - a pair already considered iconic by viewers and critics alike.
Martin Freeman on reinventing Fargo: 'I never thought about the film'
Tony Soprano (The Sopranos)

The 73rd Annual Peabody Awards were announced today, and the winners include some of the highest profile Emmy contenders, among them "Breaking Bad," "Scandal," and Netflix's two hot properties "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black." -Break- Of "Breaking Bad," the Peabody judges said, "Through a stunning brand of visual storytelling and meticulous character development, we were able to explore the darkest chambers of a human heart in a way never before seen on TV. Over five seasons, Vince Gilligan made good on his promise to utterly transform Walter White from Mr. Chips into Scarface." The admired "Scandal" as "an exaggerated, outrageous, fun-house reflection of the real-life political shenanigans," while grittier political drama "House of Cards" was praised for the way it "took binge viewing to a new level and obliterated the idea that a h...

In this wild and wacky season of Archer Vice, Isis matriarch, Malory (Jessica Walter) has endured her role as the plot pusher, but she’s also taken more of a supportive role this season. That doesn’t mean she hasn’t had her set of conflicts to deal with. She is desperately trying to find a way to make money off of the shit-ton of cocaine they have stashed in the Tunt Manor, but it’s dwindling because Pam (Amber Nash) keeps eating it. Now she has been forced her to milk what she can of Cheryl’s (Judy Greer) talents singing country songs as her latest alter ego, Cherlene.
If that’s not enough, Malory has also been dumped by her husband, Ron Cadillac (played by Walter’s real life husband, Ron Leibman), is reminding Lana (Aisha Tyler) of the mistake she has growing in her belly and for...

“I think Netflix kept us on the air.” Breaking Bad creator and executive producer Vince Gilligan said that in September at the Emmy Awards, referencing the struggles his show endured following its second season. On the same night that House of Cards became the first web-only show to win a Primetime Emmy award, Gilligan told Mashable that streaming services such as Netflix have ushered in a golden age of television, allowing audiences to consume their favorite shows at their own pace. His creation, the story of cancer-stricken chemistry teacher Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and his former student/partner Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), now lives on Netflix in its entirety. As of Monday, one of modern television’s great dramas can be watched end-to-end on your favorite streaming device, on your schedule. As Mike once told Walter in season three, “No more half-measures.” For those who have waited until now, I won’t delve into spoiler territory. Though...

Say his name, Hollywood Foreign Press Association: Bryan Cranston took home his first Golden Globe for playing Walter White on Breaking Bad. Cranston was nominated for four times previously, once for Malcolm In The Middle. The AMC drama also took home the award for Best TV Drama, beating out the likes of The Good Wife, Masters of Sex, House of Cards and Downton Abbey. Cranston said his award was a "wonderful honor" and "lovely way to say goodbye to the show that meant so much to me." Breaking Bad ended its five season run on AMC in September. "I'm up here because of Vince Gilligan," Cranston said. "He's a genius." Gilligan accepted the award for...

What happens when you’re the loudmouth who spoils an episode of Breaking Bad for President Obama? Recently, The New York Times did an oddly in-depth piece on the viewing habits of the 44th President of the United States, and though I’m disappointed he’s not working his way though the Mystery Science Theater 3000: 25th Anniversary Edition box set, as everyone should be, his list of series he’s keenly interested in is a solid one nonetheless. Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad is a series the president is late to the game on, where, as noted above, there appears to be a standing order not to spoil his early entry into the world of Walter White. On the opposite end of that spectrum, the entire Obama clan likes to catch episodes of Modern Family and NBC’s Parks and Recreation, thought the president himself has noted that his alone-time viewing habits tend to go...

I’ve avoided saying it outright for a few years as it seems like an overwritten headline but one thing is too clear to ignore when looking back at this past year in television — we are currently in the most creatively vital time in the history of the form.
Coming up with the ten best films or ten best video games for 2013 was infinitely easier than when I had to craft my “Best of TV” list for the year due to the ridiculous abundance of quality choices. With new players like Sundance Channel and Netflix shaking things up alongside the continued creative vitality of HBO, AMC, and FX, I’ve never seen a year like the one below and I’ve been doing this over a decade. How good was 2013? “Homeland,” “Bates Motel,” “Orphan Black,” “The Newsroom,” and “Sons of Anarchy” — five shows that I would highly recommend and be...

5. Orange is the New Black (Netflix)
After the much-hyped release House of Cards and return of Arrested Development, Netflix released Orange is the New Black with little fanfare, seemingly unaware of just how great a series they had on their hands. Based on the true story of a white, privileged thirty-something who is sentenced to 15 months in prison, the series explores the world of the prison that seeming protagonist Piper finds herself in. “Seeming protagonist” because after the first few episodes, the story shifts from showing her experience to instead exploring a different supporting player each week, giving viewers a glimpse of their life and the experiences that led them to where they are. Each of these women are fascinating in their own way and the cast is as diverse as any show in television history. Orange is the New Black is a wonderfully comedic and dramatic examination of life...

The cyborg historians of the future will claim that 2013 was the year that television stopped being television. Not because there weren’t great TV shows. In fact, there was a greater diversity of good shows than ever before, on broadcast and cable and beyond. But I do mean “beyond”: This was the first year when some of the best TV shows weren’t properly on TV.
Netflix launched big with House of Cards and Orange is the New Black and the mosiac reboot of Arrested Development. (Adorably, they’re still producing Lilyhammer, the Remember WENN of this particular revolution.

Sherlock Holmes: Moriarty Lives #1
Writers: David Liss
Art: Daniel Indro
Colors: Josan Gonzalez
Publisher: Dynamite Comics
David Liss is an Edgar Award winning crime novelist and is a perfect choice for writing about Professor Moriarty’s “comeback” after his presumed death at Reichenbach Falls. Moriarty Lives #1 follows the beginning of his journey to regain the mantle of “Napoleon of Crime” in a strange, little Swiss village. Using dialogue and caption boxes, Liss shows literature’s first villain hatching schemes, but ends up making him a sympathetic character as well without making him too much of a hero. He understands Moriarty is a dark, twisted mirror of Sherlock Holmes and even gives him his own “Sherlock scan” moment. However, the art and supporting cast fall short of such a great character. Colorist Josan Gonzalez switches from a darker to lighter color palette for a scene that happens in the same room.

The 2014 People’s Choice Awards nominations were announced Nov. 5, and with fan-favorites like Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, Lucy Hale & Lea Michele all racking up nominations, our heads are spinning!
The People’s Choice Awards has always been one of the stand-out fun awards show offerings, but this year’s ceremony is looking to be a bloodbath. Jared Padalecki vs. Jensen Ackles vs. Stephen Amell vs. Ian Somerhalder vs. Andrew Lincoln? Pretty Little Liars vs. The Walking Dead? (How does one even vote on that?) At least no matter who wins, it’s somebody we like, right? (Wrong. So wrong. This is huge!)
Vampires, Liars, Doctors, and Walkers: The TV Noms
With plenty of viable candidates, the TV nominations are as brutally difficult as ever this year. Some of our favorite categories include “Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show,” which has Beauty and the Beast, Once Upon A Time, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries,...

It’s been an incredible year for television – and that has meant some very tough decisions for Emmy voters. “House of Cards” put Netflix on the map in a big way. “Breaking Bad” exploded – not just in the episodes that are eligible, but in the ones that are airing right now. Kerry Washington has serious heat for “Scandal.” Let’s take a moment to savor what a year it’s been. “Game of Thrones” brought us a shocking “Red Wedding.” Walter White got caught. Don Draper stopped running from his past. “Nashville” and “Scandal” showed primetime how to do soapy drama right.

"Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin weighed in on the Emmys race and the final season of "Breaking Bad" in a new blog post on his website. In the entry, he claims that neither "Game of Thrones" nor any other show has a chance of beating "Breaking Bad" when the show gets nominated at the Emmys for its final season.
"Amazing series. Amazing episode last night. Talk about a gut punch. Walter White is a bigger monster than anyone in Westeros. (I need to do something about that)," Martin writes after the airing of "Breaking Bad's" third-to-last episode, "Ozymandias."
He continues, "This is the final season of 'Breaking Bad.' I think 'Game of Thrones' may have a shot at upsetting 'Bb' for this year's Emmy (only a shot, though, I think they are the clear favorite), which pits us against their previous season ... but there's no...
