Ed Ames, the deep-toned baritone pop singer and actor who portrayed the faithful Cherokee sidekick Mingo on the 1960s NBC series Daniel Boone, has died. He was 95.
Ames died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles after a battle with Alzheimer’s, his wife Jeanne told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of Massachusetts and a son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, Ames starred as the Oxford-educated Mingo opposite Fess Parker as Daniel Boone on the first four seasons (1964-68) of the TV Western.
His most memorable night on television, however, came in April 1965 during an appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show. Demonstrating to host Johnny Carson how Mingo would expertly handle a tomahawk, he hurled the weapon at an outline of a cowboy drawn on a wooden board — and it stuck right in the crotch.
As the audience howled, Carson left his desk and said to Ames in now-classic ad-libbed lines,...

In the immortal words of Greedo: "Maclunkey!" "Star Wars" has given rise to plenty of one-liners and other memorable movie and TV quotes, from classic mantras like "May the Force be with you" and "I've got a bad feeling about this," to more recent expressions like "This is the Way" and "I have spoken" from "The Mandalorian." In the annals of franchise history, though, perhaps no "Star Wars" quote is more controversial than "Maclunkey!" As of 2019, it's the last thing Greedo says before Han Solo shoots him dead in the Disney+ edit of "Star Wars: A New Hope."
If series creator Jon Favreau had his way, Pedro Pascal's protagonist would have also said "Maclunkey!" in "The Mandalorian." Favreau can be heard floating the idea to co-executive producer Dave Filoni in the "Making of Season 2" episode of the docuseries "Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian," streaming on Disney+.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the second episode of "The Mandalorian" season 3.
The single most sympathetic droid in the "Star Wars" galaxy is R5-D4. Search your feelings; you know it's true. And if you're not sure which one R5-D4 is, well, that's kind of the point. R5-D4 is every actor who ever failed their audition and lost out on the role of a lifetime. He's every person who was ever passed over for a job in favor of another candidate. Even Luke Skywalker mistakes him for a generic "R2 unit" when they first meet.
To date, R5-D4's biggest claim to fame has been that he was originally chosen for purchase over R2-D2 back in 1977 in "Star Wars: A New Hope" ... before he malfunctioned, and his life took a different path. In season 3, episode 2, "The Mines of Mandalore" (chapter 18 of the series overall...

We’re back, with the penultimate episode of “The Book of Boba Fett.” After last week’s somewhat polarizing episode, which left many viewers channeling their inner Ian Malcolm to ask, “Is there going to be any Boba Fett in this Boba Fett show?,” and the threat on Tatooine seemingly still looming, how exactly would the show tie up all of its loose ends? Would it be another episode of “The Mandalorian,” or would it return to focus on our main characters, namely Boba Fett himself (Temuera Morrison) and his trusty sidekick Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), who at least showed up for a few seconds last week?
With this week’s episode, “From the Desert Comes a Stranger,” some of those questions are answered, many more posed, and the stage is set for an epic showdown. But before we say more, let’s get to our recap.
Major spoilers follow...

Being typecast is rarely described as being a good thing. But in the case of Timothy Olyphant, whose career over the last two decades has been punctuated with multiple roles in which he’s played impossibly cool lawmen, an exception simply must be made, if for no other reason than he seems to be in on it. After portraying a reluctant sheriff on HBO’s “Deadwood” and a U.S. marshal on both FX’s “Justified” and the network’s fourth season of “Fargo,” Olyphant thrilled fans of Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” when he guest-starred in the Season 2 premiere as yet another marshal (and seemed to have a wonderful time doing it).
Like “Deadwood’s” Seth Bullock before him, Cobb Vanth is a lone lawman attempting to bring some semblance of law and order to what is essentially a lawless town. In this case, because “The Mandalorian” is a “Star Wars” series,...

This story about “The Mandalorian” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The second season of Disney+’s The Mandalorian debuted in the fall of 2020 in the throes of a worldwide pandemic and an unprecedented presidential election. But it still managed to be one of the biggest TV sensations of the year, providing loyal fans some clarity on burning questions: Will Mando take off his helmet ever again? What is Baby Yoda’s real name? Will any Jedi make key appearances?
The eight-episode season opened firing on all cylinders with “The Marshal,” an aspect-ratio-bending mini-adventure written and directed by creator Jon Favreau, employing a grand set piece that sits among the Star Wars franchise’s most ambitious eye-poppers: a tense standoff in which the Mandalorian, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), agrees to help town marshal Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) get rid of a livestock-destroying cave...

If you haven’t yet caught up on “The Mandalorian” Season 2, we suggest staying away from the 2021 Emmy ballots. They are chock-full of spoilers, including the fact that Mark Hamill has been submitted in the guest star category for playing a de-aged Luke Skywalker in the finale. Plus, fired cast member Gina Carano contends for the last time for her supporting role as mercenary Cara Dune. In all, 22 “The Mandalorian” cast members have been submitted for Emmys, including lead actor Pedro Pascal as the titular masked bounty hunter who seeks to protect his cute, green sidekick, Baby Yoda (aka Grogu).
SEEGiancarlo Esposito is trying to pull off what only his own co-star has done at the Emmys
Last year, this “Star Wars” offshoot turned out to be a surprise Emmy magnet, winning seven below-the-line trophies. It also received high-profile bids for drama series, guest actor for Giancarlo Esposito and voice-over performance for Taika Waititi.

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
The Mandalorian‘s latest episode, “The Siege,” is a mostly entertaining action romp through Nevarro that gives fans more clues as to what the Empire is planning for the Outer Rim. The episode is also an opportunity for Mando and Baby Yoda to reunite with season one allies Greef Karga and Cara Dune (Gina Carano). But, while the “getting the band back together” feel of the episode generally works in its favor, many Star Wars fans are dismayed by Carano’s return to the show.
The actor and former Mma fighter has quickly become one of the most controversial figures currently working in Star Wars, which has left many fans conflicted about how to celebrate the importance of her character while also separating Cara from Carano herself. Much of the debate between fans who support Carano and those who are petitioning for...
