The narrator leaves Russia and travels to to an outpost in Tajikistan. He and his fellow soldiers spend time alternately going on patrols and relaxing as they adjust to the hot, dry climate.
The soldiers travel to a remote outpost. They improve the defenses, cook food and go on patrols in the surrounding hills while battling boredom. The narrator wonders if their efforts will make any difference to the people back home.
Tadjik-Afghan border, 11th frontier post improves defenses, welcomes newly arrived soldiers, sends out patrols and repels enemy attacks. Other bases radio in to report casualties. The narrator describes the feeling of battle.
On December 31st, the men cook and gather to enjoy food and each other's company on New Year's Eve. The next day, the narrator and some other soldiers who are at the end of their tour of duty prepare to return to Russia.
