- Mili Joshi (Urmilla Matondkar) comes from a middle-class family, but has dreams of making it big on the silver screen. Encouraged by her childhood buddy, Munna (Aamir Khan), she works on this big dream, and gets a break when movie star Kamal (Jackie Shroff) watches her perform. He decides to be her mentor, and recommends her to Movie Director, Steven Kapoor (Gulshan Grover) for the lead role in the movie titled "Rangeela". In the process, Kamal and Mili get really close, and Kamal plans to ask her to marry him. Munna is left in the cold, away from the colorful and glamorous world of movies and actors. How can he possibly compete with an established movie star like Kamal?—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
- A street-toughened orphan by the name of Munna (Aamir Khan) is befriended by some kind folks (father Mr Joshi (Achyut Potdar) and Mother (Reema Lagoo)), whose effervescent daughter Mili (Urmila Matondkar) soon grows to be his best buddy. Both gravitate toward the Mumbai movie industry. While Mili finds occupation as a movie extra, Munna earns his livelihood selling movie tickets in the black market. Pakya (Rajesh Joshi) is Munna's best friend. Steven Kapoor (Gulshan Grover) is a director who aspires to win an Oscar. P.C. (Avtar Gill) is a producer. Steven is irritated with the star tantrums of current actresses. Raj Kamal (Jackie Shroff) is a professional actor and the hero of the movie. He understands Steven's frustration with star actresses and their mothers, who tend to be over-protective. Raj is considered to be a serious and brilliant actor.
Mili doesn't like Munna's unsophisticated ways and wishes that he be more "normal" and that he doesn't pick up fights with everyone on every small little thing (with the banana stall owner, in the movie theatre for creating too much ruckus and so on).. Munna realizes that he loves Mini..
Mili has ambitions of becoming an actress. Fortune glances her way when she dances her way into a movie star's attention (Raj sees Mili practicing her dancing on the beach). This actor, Raj Kamal (Jackie Shroff), arranges for her to be auditioned for the heroine's role in his upcoming movie called Rangeela (as the current heroine Gulbadan is getting married and is leaving the film industry). Mili's shortcomings amount to distractions, but thanks in no small way to Munna and Raj (Raj gives her space and confidence after she fails her first 11 takes. Munna helps her to rehearse all night for the audition the next day), she lands the role. Munna decides to take Mili out for a date at a five star hotel.. But Mili goes to a party organized by Raj instead. Not to give in, Munna dresses up in gaudy and flashy clothes and takes her to the five star hotel the very next day. But he only ends up embarrassing Mili with his crude and raw behavior. Mili leaves when she sees Raj in the same hotel who had come to meet a director for a new movie project.
Raj and Munna both fall for Mili, but Mili is too busy making the movie to notice any of this. She starts spending a lot of time with Raj during the filming. Raj tells her how he lost his girl friend when he had an accident in his first car, which he was driving too fast. He also takes her to his isolated places in Bombay, where he plans to build a new house. He beats up a few fans who were passing lewd comments at Mili during an outdoor shoot. Munna tries many times to tell Mili that he loves her, but he is unable to, or Raj gets in the way. Munna even speaks to Mr Joshi on the topic of love and learns that if he truly loves Mili, he will have to tell her asap. But, Mili leaves for a shoot in Goa.
Munna goes to visit Mili in Goa. Munna wants to propose to Mili with a small ring, but Raj had gifted her an expensive diamond necklace. Eventually, feeling inferior, Munna decides to leave Mili to Raj, who can give her a better life than he can. Raj seriously considers proposing to Mili at a private screening. Meanwhile PC insults Munna by throwing him out of the theatre. Munna fights PC and Mili sees this.. But she believes Munna started the fight and sides with PC. Munna leaves humiliated. The film is a monster hit and soon the Joshi's are ultra rich. The matter is not resolved though, as Mili hears of this (from a letter that Munna writes to her before leaving Mumbai) on the film's opening night. She asks Raj to help her find Munna, which he does after realizing that Mili seems to love Munna and not him.
Mili stops Munna midway, misunderstandings get cleared up and the lovers unite.
