Pablo Larrain’s “Jackie” roused what’s been a sleepy market at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. Starring Natalie Portman as the former First Lady, the film covers a four-day period that begins just before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and Portman turns in an Oscar-worthy performance that received a standing ovation at the film’s screening Sunday.
Fox Searchlight has first and last look on the movie, but distributors also understood to be in the hunt include A24. EuropaCorp, French mogul Luc Besson’s U.S.-based upstart led by former Universal co-chairman Marc Shmuger, made initial inquiries but stopped short of a bid. CAA and Insiders are handling the sale.

Is Netflix set to dominate this year’s headlines?
Wild Bunch has launched its new La-based sales company, Insiders, a cluster of new American funds are about to enter the market and Robert Simonds’ high-profile Stx is in exploratory talks to move into international sales.
Heading into Cannes there is plenty to chew on, including currency fluctuations, anxiety over the proposed European Digital Single Market and a diverse Us distribution landscape offering more opportunities than ever before.
Yet there are no prizes for guessing who everybody will be talking about when the fun and games kick off on the Croisette this week.
Ted Sarandos hits Cannes
Netflix’s $17m swoop on all worldwide rights to Jadotville in Berlin served as a timely reminder of the streaming giant’s ambitions and, in the run-up to Cannes, the company had already made at least one offer on a major agency package. The outfit has gone from a beast with a...

In another aggressive foray into original feature acquisition, Netflix is nearing a $12 million deal to pick up Beasts of No Nation, the Cary Fukunaga-directed African drama starring Idris Elba.
Insiders say that the streaming service is planning to make a big awards push for the pic, which Fox Searchlight and Focus Features were also angling to snag. Elba stars as the commander of a West African guerilla force, which dehumanizes young children in order to turn them into effective soldiers. Fukunaga, whose star rose when he directed the first season of HBO’s True Detective last year, also penned the script and produced.
Grabbing Beasts of No Nation is just the latest victory for Netflix, which acquired Jamie Dornan-powered siege drama Jadotville for $18 million during the Berlin Film Festival. Additionally, the streaming service has secured four Adam Sandler movies, a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel, a new Pee-Wee...

The owner of one of the country's largest maraschino cherry suppliers fatally shot himself on Tuesday after authorities allegedly discovered his Brooklyn factory was a front for a drug operation. Dell's Maraschino Cherries owner Arthur Mondella, 57, was initially cooperative when investigators showed up at the facility at around 8 a.m., ABC News reports. But he became nervous when authorities asked about some suspicious-looking shelving and excused himself to go to the bathroom, insiders told the New York Post. It was there that Mondella turned the gun on himself. "Take care of my kids," he shouted to his sister, who was standing outside the bathroom,...

Bryan Singer’s Jack The Giant Killer has been retitled by New Line and Warner Bros. to Jack The Giant Slayer.
Jack The Giant Slayer is in 3D and will be released on March 22, three weeks earlier than previously scheduled, filling in the empty spot Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium vacated when it was moved to August 9.
Based on the fairy tale, Jack The Giant Slayer stars Nicholas Hoult in the title role; the rest of the cast includes Ewan McGregor, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane and Bill Nighy.
Insiders say that the title was changed to make it more family-friendly. I suppose “slayer” is more friendly than “killer”… The movie will be rated PG-13.

Ken Branagh is a dead ringer for Jean Gabin, and Idris Elba has a date with destiny
Gift of the Gabin
Watching the crystal-clean restoration of Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion released in cinemas last week, I was struck by how much the great Jean Gabin looks like Ken Branagh. Or the other way around, I suppose. Gabin is young and dashing as Maréchal, the French airman held in the prisoner of war camp, but as he allows his stubble to grow he looks increasingly like the Branagh who was so charming and chatty on the awards carpets this year. Obviously Branagh made much of his admiration for Laurence Olivier, to whom he has often been compared and whom he plays in My Week with Marilyn, but even in that film he actually looks more like the later Gabin, in particular in Renoir's sumptuous French Cancan from 1955.
Liar, liar,...

Yes, the remake of Clash of the Titans was pretty terrible, and we've gotten some really big promises for its upcoming sequel, but we have to admit we're kind of surprised by this latest bit of news. A third film in the now franchise is already in the works.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers, which is in post-production with Legendary Pictures on Wrath of the Titans, is developing the next installment of the franchise which was inspired by the Greek myths, even though Wrath doesn’t open until March 30, 2012.
Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson, who co-wrote Wrath’s screenplay with Steven Knight and also share story credit with Greg Berlanti, have been enlisted to develop and write a treatment for the threequel, which would continue the adventures of Perseus, played by Sam Worthington.
Insiders say that Agenor, a sidekick-like character played by Toby Kebbell, may also figure into the new story,...

Fans of The Vampire Diaries are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Klaus — the oldest, most vindictive, and so far unseen vampire who’ll want to sacrifice Elena to break the curse that keeps most vampires from walking in the sun (and thereby seal the fates of werewolves to forever change on the full moon whether they want to or not). It’s a killer part that the exec producers aren’t taking the casting of lightly, even if Kevin Williamson did joke with us earlier this month about wanting to just dye Ian Somerhalder’s hair blond. Ep Julie Plec...
