Charming for both children and adults

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the best Christmas calenders of all time. It was produced long after my childhood ended, but I am sure I would have loved it if I could have watched it when nine years old...

The idea about ghosts who try to scare away people from their ancient family home, but who have to surrender to unafraid and scientific-minded children, borrows very much from "The Canterville Ghost". But - that does not matter. The story still feels new and original, with all the typical modern Swedish issues thrown into it.

This series has (almost) everything: a big, exciting castle to explore, Christmas magic, science fiction, adventure, courage, strange occurrences, a mystery to solve... But it is also grounded in a reality that most children can relate to: parents who are well-meaning, but busy with their own professions and lives and not really understanding... and the same goes for teachers. Sibling rivalry and sibling love. An awakening interest for the opposite sex. Etc..

The reasons I still do not give it 10 stars are three:

  • it is sometimes a bit slow - and my daughter, who is in fact nine, thinks so too

  • there is very little music in it. I would have loved more Christmas songs - that contributes a lot to the Christmas atmosphere

  • the producers were too afraid of the Politically Correct mafia, to enter almost anything at all about the real reason that we celebrate Christmas. Which I find to be an omission in a series for children, as so many children today do not have parents who talk with them or take them to church

"Allt har en naturlig förklaring!"

Featuring special effects aplenty, Mysteriet på Greveholm threw everything at the screen: ghosts, skeletons, rockets, robots, you name it. It was a huge treat to watch every December morning and easily the Christmas calendar with the most SFX in Swedish history. The miraculous thing about the show, however, was that it melded the SFX with genuine warmth and a superb sense of humour. It managed to be kid-friendly, yet never boring - it was intriguing and actually engaging, with a puzzle that the main characters Ivar, Lillan and Melitta had to piece together throughout the course of the 24 episodes. A great cast brought the colourful characters to life - bumbling family father Leif, obsessive dentist mother Astrid, household ghosts Jean and Staffan. As good as the child actors were they were completely overshadowed by Peter Fridh, Anna-Lena Brundin, Gösta Engström and Pierre Lindstedt, who all provided wonderful humour and wit. The show had many great gags and quotes, a fun soundtrack, and a brilliant conclusion. Director Dan Zethraeus has lots of fun with his special effects but he never lets them overshadow the story and comedy. And there you have it: the best Christmas calendar of all time, and a genuine classic.

PS. SPRAK is the coolest robot ever.

Extremely good

Warning: Spoilers
Wow! This Christmas Calender is one of Swedens best ever! The ghosts looks real. The show is a bit scary, but in a cut and humorist way. After all, the show is mostly for kids. Thrills all along makes the series extremely good.

It's about a completely normal Swedish family. (cooking and cleaning mom, a totally nontechnical dad, phone crazy teenager, a smart girl and the girl loving boy) The mom wants to rent a house during Christmas. But after a few misunderstandings, the family accidentally rents a big castle. Out of the castle comes some stupid thief's, who thinks they can find a treasure box in the castle. But when the family comes, they pretend to own the castle, and gets payed for renting it out by the mom. But the thief's saw something in the castle, something they don't speak loud about... Thats the first episode of 24 (one per day from 1 December to Christmas). Definitely worth to see!
