Zack Snyder May Just Have Left These Clues That Connect His Rebel Moon Franchise to Army of the Dead
Zack Snyder is unarguably one of the biggest masterminds in the entertainment industry, having helmed masterpieces like the Snyder cut of the Justice League. Not only does he beat everyone’s expectations with his out-of-the-world storylines, but he also sometimes leaves behind clues in his universes, which end up connecting them irrespective of how different their storylines may be.

That being said, his Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon sagas were no exception to this fact. In fact, as it turns out through a new set of threads shared by a fan pointing out the similarities between the two universes, Snyder just may have left these clues behind for fans to figure out just how perfectly his AotD and Rm worlds collide and connect. And fans? Well, they’re as baffled as ever, indeed!

From historically accurate costumes to expensive set designs, it takes a lot of money to shoot a believable period piece, with these films requiring an additional level of planning in order to feel true to life. That’s why it’s so rare to see non-blockbuster productions take on this challenge – especially when it comes to monster movies.
That being said, there are still some brave genre filmmakers that try and experiment with different story settings without the benefit of a super-hero movie budget, which often leads to incredibly unique horror films. That’s why we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best period-piece monster movies, as creature features shouldn’t have to be limited to any particular era.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining “period piece” as any movie that takes place in a time period previous to when it was filmed.

Before Harrison Ford dusts off his fedora and rethreads his trusty bullwhip for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, we’re looking back at the film that launched one of the most iconic action adventure franchises in Hollywood history, Raiders of the Lost Ark. The brainchild of George Lucas and his close friend, Steven Spielberg. Their collective vision for Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones Jr. evolved from their love of old adventure serials. They saw Indy as an American equivalent of James Bond, an explorer who uncovers artifacts and punches Nazis instead of fighting for his queen and country and sleeping with the enemy.

There are certain success stories in the history of cinema that serve to inspire filmmakers for generations to come. Existing right alongside Kevin Smith's low-budget comedy "Clerks" and Robert Rodriguez's "El Mariachi," there is Sam Raimi's all-time horror classic "The Evil Dead," which was made on a shoestring budget with his pals, producer Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell, in the early '80s. It ultimately found success despite its lack of resources, having earned more than $29 million in ticket sales to date. Not bad for a movie that was made for a mere $375,000.

Zack Snyder’s zombie movie Army of the Dead spawned the Netflix spinoff movie Army of Thieves in 2021, but what about an actual sequel? Last we heard, Planet of the Dead will be Snyder’s official sequel to Army of the Dead, and Snyder provides an update this week.
The basic gist? Snyder is currently hard at work on another Netflix property, his sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, which is taking up the bulk of his time. Planet of the Dead will have to wait.
“As far as the Army Universe goes, it’s still alive and well in my mind,” Snyder tells The Nerd Queens. “I know exactly what I would do. It really depends on how we try to figure out how we go forward with Rebel Moon and the Rebel Moon Universe. It’s not a small-time commitment. A sci-fi thing at this scale does require a lot...

A few years ago, Zack Snyder started building the Army of the Dead franchise at the Netflix streaming service. His zombie movie Army of the Dead was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves. An animated series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works, and Snyder himself was expected to direct the Army of the Dead sequel Planet of the Dead. He was developing the Planet of the Dead script with Shay Hatten, who co-wrote the first film with him… But we haven’t heard anything more about that project in a while, because Snyder has shifted his focus to building another franchise at Netflix. The sci-fi franchise Rebel Moon. Now, in an interview with The Nerd Queens (as reported by Collider), Snyder has confirmed that Planet of the Dead will have to wait until after they know exactly where the Rebel Moon franchise is going.

Jack Neo’s comedy proved the leading local feature over Chinese New Year.
Jack Neo’s Ah Girls Go Army has crossed $1.49m (S$2m) at the Singapore box office, making it the top grossing local film since the outbreak of the pandemic.
Released by mm2 Asia on February 1, the first day of the Chinese New Year, the comedy follows the first batch of female recruits going through national service because of a shortage of men. It is a spin-off from the hugely successful Ah Boys To Men franchise, which has spawned four films all directed by Neo, the most bankable Singaporean filmmaker.

This Star Wars article contains spoilers.
Disney’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series will not only bring back Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to their iconic roles but also unlock a new era of storytelling for these beloved Star Wars characters. From a certain point of view, the show will walk a similar path to The Book of Boba Fett, exploring the lost years of the Jedi Master before his fateful meeting with Luke Skywalker in A New Hope, just as Boba Fett used flashbacks to flesh out the bounty hunter’s untold story after Return of the Jedi.
But some might say Obi-Wan Kenobi is at a disadvantage compared to The Book of Boba Fett‘s relatively blank slate. Since the character’s overall story is already set in stone — we know where he’s going and where his journey must end — how high can the stakes really get in the new Disney+ series?...

While it’s true that we’ve had quite a few releases of the Evil Dead films over the years, this writer somehow never really got into collecting all those releases, so I think the last time I even bought the first two Evil Dead films on home media was sometime in the early 2010s. That’s why I was pretty stoked to check out The Evil Dead Groovy Collection, which features both The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, as well the entire run of the Ash vs Evil Dead series and a ton of special features, making this collection a terror-filled treasure trove of demon-fueled fun. The lack of Army of Darkness is a bit of a bummer, but I understand that its exclusion is due to rights, so I’m not really surprised that it didn’t make its way into this set.

Coming less than a year after its predecessor, Army of Thieves is a prequel to Zack Snyder’s recent Netflix hit zombie movie, Army of the Dead. But Thieves is not an action-horror hybrid like that earlier movie, which was directed and co-written by Snyder. Instead Thieves is a heist thriller and set in the early days of Dead’s zombie pandemic. Hence the new film focuses on one character we met in the previous film and what he was up to before the zombies struck: Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer), the savant-like safecracker hired in Dead to break open a vault at the center of that film’s storyline.
What makes it all the more interesting is that Snyder didn’t direct the movie either: Schweighöfer did. A director and producer in his native Germany as well as an actor, Schweighöfer finds himself helming his first major international production for...

Netflix’s zombie smash hit “Army of the Dead” has a prequel coming this fall from the original film’s star, Matthias Schweighöfer. He’s the director and star of “Army of Thieves,” the set-up film to Zack Snyder’s wildly popular zombie movie. Schweighöfer plays small-town bank teller Dieter, who gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe. Watch the official trailer below before the movie arrives on the streaming platform on October 29.
The screenplay comes from Shay Hatten, who co-wrote “Army of the Dead” with Joby Harold. The cast of “Army of Thieves” includes Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, and Jonathan Cohen. Producers are Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller, Dan Maag, and Schweighöfer, from a story developed by Snyder and Hatten.

Watch the first trailer below.

Zack Snyder’s Las Vegas-set zombie heist movie Army of the Dead was the clear winner in U.S. streaming for the week of May 17 to 23, according to Nielsen.
With an audience that was 60% male, the action outing easily won the week with 913 million minutes of streaming. It went on Netflix after a one-week run in about 600 theaters, the most ambitious launch yet of a pure streaming title. The theatrical run grossed less than $800,000, according to industry reports, which was far lower than forecasts. Netflix has said it was a strong performer globally, with an estimated 72 million views in its first four weeks on the service.
About 18% of those who watched eight-episode superhero series Jupiter’s Legacy also watched Army, Nielsen said. Based on a Netflix-owned Millarworld property, Jupiter’s Legacy has been reconceived as an anthology, effectively canceling the original show. Its first season plunged from No. 1 in its debut week...

Zack Snyder’s zombie epic “Army of the Dead” is off to a strong start on Netflix, as the streamer reports (via Deadline) that the movie is expected to be viewed by 72 million households over its first four weeks of release. That number puts “Army of the Dead” in the number 10 spot on the list of biggest Netflix original openings. “Army of the Dead” opened to the same household views as George Clooney’s “The Midnight Sky,” which launched over the Christmas holiday last year. It’s important to note that Netflix recognizes a “view” as any subscriber who watched two minutes of the movie’s runtime.
The strong opening for “Army of the Dead” is good news for Snyder, who intends to launch a new franchise for the streamer with his Dave Bautista-starring action movie. Two “Army”-connected films are already in development at Netflix, one is an...

Exclusive: Netflix has another feature hit on its hands in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead which is on its way to becoming one of the streamer’s top 10 most watched movies, bound to notch 72M viewing households in its first four weeks.
Army of the Dead, which repped the streamer’s widest theatrical release in 600 theaters prior to its drop on the service last Friday, May 21, ties with George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky as the 9th most watched feature on Netflix. The zombie ensemble movie was No. 1 overall in 70+ countries and the top film in 90+ countries.
One has to give credit to Netflix: At a time when streamers including Disney+, Hulu, Amazon, and HBO Max are shielding their viewership figures, the Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos led entertainment company, and Scott Stuber led film studio, is actually disclosing results on the success of its movies and TV series.

Yet again, BTS proved they’ve got that superstar glow.
Just after releasing their new single on Friday, BTS graced the Billboard Music Awards with a performance of “Butter.” Broadcasting live, BTS performed remotely from Korea. The group, comprised of Jung Kook, V, Jimin, j-hope, Suga, Jin and Rm, took viewers along to a backstage dressing room and onto a red carpet fitted for the BBMAs.
“Butter,” already primed to be an upcoming summer hit, is the K-pop group’s second English single, right behind last year’s earworm, “Dynamite.” It broke multiple records within the first couple hours of its release. Breaking their own record, “Butter” became the fastest YouTube video ever to reach 10 million views, hitting the mark in just 13 minutes. Within two hours, the song hit No. 1 on Apple Music. A day in, “Butter” logged the most single-day streams of any song ever on Spotify.

[Editor’s note: This article contains major spoilers for Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead.”]
Many movies arrive with dreams of a franchise, but “Army of the Dead” lands on Netflix with one already intact: Zack Snyder’s stylish and gory zombie action-thriller hits the streamer with two prequels already in the queue, 2022 anime series “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” and a standalone feature, “Army of Thieves,” based around Mattias Schweighöfer’s kooky safecracking character that’s already finished and coming out later this year.
“Army of the Dead” covers a lot of plot in its staggering credits sequence, when the walking corpses are battled and trapped in Sin City by a team of mercenaries. It’s clear that Snyder envisioned quite the complex timeline leading up to the gory heist at the center of his movie. But for all the intrigue surrounding where these undead came from and what happened earlier in the timeline, “Army of the Dead...

This Army of the Dead article contains spoilers.
There’s a moment during Army of the Dead when a team led by former mercenary Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), on a mission to recover a casino owner’s cash from a vault in ruined, zombie-ravaged Las Vegas, comes upon the remains of a previous team seemingly sent into the city for the same reason. Ward’s right-hand man, a philosophically inclined “zombie killing machine” named Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick), muses that perhaps this is their team — and that they’re caught in a time loop, repeating the same disastrous actions over and over again. What a concept, bro!
Of course, that’s not the case (this isn’t Doctor Strange or even Boss Level) and the bodies are simply those of a different team. But it does foreshadow the very end of this movie, which adapts the same nihilistic view of the...

Evans revolutionized treatment for Neuroblastoma, a deadly form of pediatric nerve cancer, and co-founded Ronald McDonald House Charities, an organization that provides housing and support to millions of families around the world.

It seems strange to call a Zack Snyder movie nostalgic. Over the last decade the director has spent all his energy operating within the superhero industrial complex, dunking his caped crusaders into the same slow-motion, washed-out dye that defines his grand and mythically inspired aesthetic. Snyder’s spectacles repeatedly grapple with the burdens of power and sacrifice on a global scale; they depict heroism soaked in a bath of self-seriousness and hypermasculinity. It’s a water weight that comes with the price of admission. Which is to say Snyder’s movies—from the blood-spattered murals of 300 to his cult-backed, four-hour Justice League director’s cut—have become rather predictable affairs, blurred together by their sepia-toned iconography and brooding subject matter.
But Army of the Dead, his new zombie-heist, Netflix-produced carnival ride, offers something of a callback to the filmmaker’s monster-genre roots. For the first time since his Dawn of the Dead retread,...

“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
The final line in “Casablanca,” with Humphrey Bogart’s Rick commenting on the marriage of convenience with French Vichy Captain Renault, might serve for theaters and Netflix. The movie that’s testing that bond is not a cinema classic; it’s Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead,” an action-zombie movie made for Netflix, which will debut May 14 in nearly 600 theaters.
These include major chains led by Cinemark, which until now largely avoided the streamer’s films, and gives “Army” deeper nationwide theatrical access than any previous Netflix film. With its one-week jump ahead of home viewing, that’s a week more than “Godzilla vs. Kong” or “Mortal Kombat,” both of which were concurrent with HBO Max.
By current standards, it resembles a normal film release. It even comes with Thursday-night previews, just like other studios’ high-anticipation movies.

It’s the director’s best film since his “Dawn of the Dead,” but like so many Snyder movies, it’s both too much and not enough
“Army of the Dead” is that rare film that will unite two disparate audiences — both the hardcore fans of director Zack Snyder and the viewers who can’t stand his superhero movies but wish he would make another film like his 2004 remake of “Dawn of the Dead.”
Granted, this latest saga has no direct narrative connection with that earlier film, telling a brand-new and totally discrete tale of the undead. It also overextends its welcome at nearly two-and-a-half hours, but after the bloated excess of Snyder’s extended “Justice League” cut, “Army” feels lean and brisk.

Zack Snyder dominated the spring movie season with the HBO Max release of his “Justice League” director’s cut, and he looks to do the same with the summer movie season thanks to “Army of the Dead.” The filmmaker’s Netflix debut brings him back to the zombie genre 17 years after “Dawn of the Dead” served as his studio breakthrough. Netflix has a lot riding on “Army of the Dead,” and the film is just the beginning of a larger franchise that is set to include both an anime series and a prequel movie.
Led by Dave Bautista (no stranger to franchise filmmaking thanks to his role as Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), “Army of the Dead” follows a group of mercenaries who plot a heist on a Las Vegas casino during a zombie outbreak. Based on a recent interview between Zack Snyder and Deadline, it doesn’t sound like Zack Snyder will be returning to Warner Bros. to make a new film anytime soon. Warner Bros. was Snyder’s home studio for 15 years, but the writer/director has nothing in development there following this week’s streaming release of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” on HBO Max. Snyder jumped to Warner Bros. in 2006 with “300” after making his feature directorial debut with Universal’s “Dawn of the Dead.” Since “300,” Snyder has made all of his movies with Warner Bros, but his upcoming Netflix zombie epic “Army of the Dead” sounds like it could signal a more permanent shift away from Warners.

For years, Zack Snyder’s fans have yearned for the chance to see what the filmmaker would have done had he had the chance to release his version of “Justice League” into theaters when the film opened in November 2017. Instead, the superhero movie has endured one of the most tortured journeys a modern-day blockbuster has ever taken: After battling with Warner Bros. over his darker and lengthier version of the film, Snyder ultimately stepped away from the project in the wake of the death by suicide of his daughter Autumn. Warner Bros. then tasked Joss Whedon (“The Avengers”) to re-write, re-shoot, and re-edit Snyder’s film into a shorter, less angsty and funnier film. But when that “Justice League” ultimately opened in theaters, it pleased almost no one, lost money, and mired the studio in years of bad press — first from noisy fan discontent with Whedon’s version, then from...

The rediscovered 1972 documentary – directed by Francine Parker, a pioneering female filmmaker – is an acronym for “Free the Army” and other variations of the phrase. Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland – right after they did the film Klute in 1971 – organized an anti-war “entertain the troops” show for army bases in Hawaii, the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan … the very places being used to conduct the Vietnam War. The idea was to gather performers, including Fonda and Sutherland, to help mobilize the anti-Vietnam War effort.
