Barry Jenkins isn’t necessarily feeling the love from every social media commenter over his involvement in Mufasa: The Lion King after the Disney prequel released its first trailer this week.
After screening footage at CinemaCon earlier this month, the film’s trailer was released online Monday and features narration from Rafiki (John Kani) explaining that the movie offers the origin story for Mufasa, the lion patriarch featured in 1994’s animated The Lion King and Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic remake of the same name.
Jenkins took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to share the trailer, and his post was greeted with both favorable responses and also some negative ones, with the criticism apparently stemming from backlash to Disney’s trend of reimagining its previous animation hits. One user wrote, “Barry, You’re too good and talented for this Iger’s soulless machine,” referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

When Marvel Studios was searching for its Doctor Strange in the mid-2010s, a lot of very interesting names were in the mix. Chief among them was Joaquin Phoenix, an actor it was hard to imagine ever joining the MCU.
Ultimately, it didn't happen, and Benedict Cumberbatch landed the role. It's hard to imagine anyone else playing the Sorcerer Supreme now, of course, and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson revealed just how close the Joker star came to being cast in an interview with Slash Film.
"Well, all I'll say is I spent some time with him. I spent a couple of long afternoons with him and really was really impressed with him personally and his thought process," the filmmaker explained. "This is what I'll say: I think he was giving, I think he was opening his mind to the possibility. I think he was investigating the possibility."

Bruce Timm, the co-creator of the animated series revealed that he had to make Conroy forget everything he knew about Batman to land the role.

Surprisingly, Kevin Conroy knew nothing much about the Gotham Knight when he went for a script reading for the role. In 2014, Gayle Rankin made her Broadway debut in Sam Mendes’ revival of Cabaret, playing the supporting role of Fraulein Kost. Now, exactly a decade later, Rankin is playing the lead role of Sally Bowles opposite Eddie Redmayne in a new Broadway production that opened April 21.
“I feel like a completely different person,” says Rankin, as she sits in her dressing room in a red dressing gown, with her blond hair clipped back. “It’s so rare that you get to see your life marked by something so actual, by a piece of work. And what a piece of work to be able to gauge where you are as a human being.”
In recent years, the Scottish actress — who grew up south of Glasgow — rose to prominence with a series of film and TV roles, including The Greatest Showman and HBO’s Perry Mason, and most notably as Sheila the She-Wolf...

When Ilana Wolpert was studying English literature at the prestigious Duke University, she never imagined that one of her first loves – Shakespeare – would lead directly to writing R-rated movies.
But the writer found her life changed when she took a screenwriting class in her senior year, and her love for the classics led her to adapt Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing into a contemporary rom-com. The enemies-to-lovers romance became Anyone But You, and it's coming to streamers this Tuesday.
What's It About?

Wes Anderson provoked chatter at this year's Oscar ceremony by not being there to accept his award for Best Live Action Short Film for The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar. But he had a good excuse — he was kicking off work on his next film. While some the cast included the predictable likes of regulars such as Bill Murray and Benicio Del Toro, we now also know that Riz Ahmed is among their number.
Anderson's latest is still largely under wraps, with no official word on a plot yet. But the director has cameras cranking away in Berlin, working from a script he wrote with Roman Coppola. Production was supposed to kick off last year, until the dual strikes put paid to that plan. And while it has yet to be confirmed, the title for the new project is rumoured as The Phoenician Scheme. One of Hollywood's most frustrating recent news stories is that Francis Ford Coppola is having trouble finding distribution for his self-funded passion project, "Megalopolis" (via The Hollywood Reporter). In a just world, making "The Godfather" would grant Coppola a lifetime blank check, but that has never been the world we've lived in.
What you may not be aware of is one of Coppola's influences for his magnum opus. Like his friend "Star Wars" director George Lucas, Coppola looked to Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. While Lucas took after Kurosawa's Jidaigeki (historical) films, Coppola looked to one of the director's contemporary-set films: "The Bad Sleep Well."
Released in 1960 and starring his go-to leading man Toshiro Mifune, the movie is one of Kurosawa's (comparatively) more obscure ones. It was especially overshadowed by "High and Low," the masterful kidnapping thriller that Kurosawa and Mifune released in 1963. Both movies are set in the world of...

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

With his victory on Monday at the Critics’ Circle Theatre awards, Andrew Scott has made history. Neon, the studio that backed Oscar-winners “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Parasite,” has ironed out a deal with Waypoint Entertainment, the production company behind “The Favourite” and “The Nice Guys,” to bring more mid-budget movies to the big screen.

Neon is bolstering its production and distribution capabilities with a new financial investment from the producers of its most recent film, “Cuckoo,” which just screened at the SXSW Film Festival.
Indie-studio Neon has formed a strategic financial partnership with Waypoint Entertainment, a production company led by producer Ken Kao that’s been behind films like “The Favourite” and “The Nice Guys.” Together, the two companies will work on a slate of genre films intended for theatrical release.
The deal is non-exclusive, and no details on the slate of films were announced today — but the films will be indies in the $10 million+ range. The investment should give Neon a bit more financial firepower to compete with the likes of A24. Neon will handle global distribution on each of Waypoint’s titles via its newly-launched international sales division.

In 1989, "Weird Al" Yankovic released a song called "Isle Thing," a parody of Tone Lōc's 1988 hit "Wild Thing." In Yankovic's version, the song's narrator met an attractive woman at the Circle-k and went back to her place, presumably for some active coitus. Instead, however, the woman eschewed sex for a marathon of "Gilligan's Island" reruns. The narrator immediately began to recognize the logical inconsistencies in Sherwood Schwartz's beloved 1963 sitcom, notably that the Professor (Russell Johnson) could build a nuclear reactor using only coconuts, but wasn't able to construct a boat to escape the desert island he and the castaways were stranded on. Yankovic also noted that "those homeboys brought an awful lot for just a three-hour tour."
The premise of "Gilligan's Island" is made clear in the show's opening theme song. Two sailors and five guests were to take a three-hour boat tour around Hawai'i when they hit bad weather,...

Xoxo, Upper East Siders. Chuck Bass is getting married and Lily Van Der Woodsen is invited.
“I miss that character, but I am still in touch with almost everyone from the show. I am going to Ed’s [Westwick] wedding and I am so excited,” admitted “Gossip Girl” star Kelly Rutherford at French TV festival Series Mania.
In the “still relevant” show, she played the impossibly glamorous mother of Blake Lively’s Serena.
“It was before this whole super politically correct time. We were on the verge of it and there is just a different energy about it. After the first season, we knew [it was huge].”
“Gossip Girl” ended in 2012.
“The women I grew up with were very chic, but I hadn’t really seen a mother like that on TV. I didn’t realize how much people loved Lily – until now. At first, it was all about these kids. We were just parents.

"Grand Theft Auto V" is one of the biggest video games of all time, which in turn paved the way for a huge player base in "Grand Theft Auto Online." For a couple of out-of-work actors, it provided them a space to do the thing they missed the most during the pandemic: acting. While "GTA" is a place to commit crimes in a carefree, digital environment, a couple of guys named Sam and Mark turned it into the most unlikely venue to play host to some of William Shakespeare's work.
"Grand Theft Hamlet" is a new documentary that chronicles Sam and Mark's journey from merely playing "GTA" to hatching a plan to put on a production of "Hamlet" staged entirely in the game. The film recently premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and I am here to tell you that it's unlike any other movie you've ever seen before.

While there are still several days of buzzy film premieres remaining at SXSW 2024, all of the films playing in competition have screened for audiences and critics. The film festival’s jury announced the winners of the festival’s major awards on Thursday, giving out prizes for narrative feature, documentary feature, and a variety of short, episodic, and Xr categories.
The narrative feature competition was won by “Bob Trevino Likes It,” Tracie Laymon’s dramedy that stars Barbie Ferreira as a young woman who seeks to heal wounds from her relationship with her abusive father by befriending an unrelated man with the exact same name (John Leguizamo).
The top documentary prize went to Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls’ groundbreaking documentary “Grand Theft Hamlet,” which followed a group of actors staging a production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” inside “Grand Theft Auto Online” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

For all of the artistic challenges posed by filming an entire documentary inside a video game, you’d think that it would at least be a lighter logistical lift for filmmakers. There’s no need to acquire permits, haul heavy equipment to remote locations, or wrangle large film crews. But when Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls decided to stage a production of “Hamlet” inside of “Grand Theft Auto Online” during the final months of the Covid-19 pandemic and make a documentary about the experience, they quickly found that making art inside of the game was more complicated than it looks. The biggest challenge? Convincing online strangers playing the famously violent game not to shoot them while they rehearsed and filmed.
“It’s as challenging as it would have been when Shakespeare was putting on a new production at the Globe,” Grylls told IndieWire in a recent conversation. “He didn’t...

To be or not to be. That was the question facing so many artists at the height of the Covid pandemic (let’s call it January 2021), when the crisis seemed as if it might continue forever, and the absence of an audience threatened to chip away at the creative spirit itself. Suddenly unemployed and unable to support his family after landing the biggest role of his life (the titular wizard in the London production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”), British actor Sam Crane couldn’t help but wonder — to quote a certain Danish prince — “whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing end them.” Crane may not have shared Hamlet’s attraction to suicide, but he certainly entertained the idea of laying his career to rest before he was...

Cody Rhodes has one of the most intriguing WWE storylines, one that has had fans captivated ever since its debut. However, despite the twists and turns that plague the story, fans have found a very unusual connection between the story that Rhodes is playing out and the storyline of Dinsey’s most popular animated story.
Cody Rhodes
Fans have equated the beats of the storyline that Rhodes has been following with Lion King, the seminal Disney classic that adapted William Shakespeare’s Hamlet for its young audience. The plot beats and the characters have been mapped out by audiences in a fun instance of comparative storytelling, something that has taken X by storm in the wake of this realization.

Since 92 films have won the Oscar for Best Costume Design, it stands to reason that there has been some overlap when it comes to their casts. Indeed, hundreds of actors have each appeared in at least two of those movies, with 31 having played credited roles in three or more. Scroll through our photo gallery to find out which 23 men and eight women have donned the most Oscar-winning outfits.
Costume designers were first honored at the 21st Academy Awards in 1949, when “Hamlet” and “Joan of Arc” were respectively chosen as the black-and-white and color films with the most impressive garments. After being temporarily combined from 1958-1959, those two categories permanently merged in 1968, the year that vibrant musical “Camelot” took the prize. Eight of said 31 performers (including half of the actresses) are on the roster thanks to their appearances in films shot in both styles.

Suzy Eddie Izzard bowed for each role on Sunday after the opening night of her one-woman show of Hamlet.
The show opened in the Greenwich House Theater in New York City. The script, a rendition of William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet was written by her brother, Mark Izzard. Actress Selina Cadell directed the play.
Izzard was met with applause and positive reviews. In the show, Izzard played a diverse ensemble of characters, including kings, queens, soldiers and ghosts. Hamlet is said to be one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays to perform.
In 2023, Izzard, Mark and Cadell produced a separate one-woman show of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. The show was performed on Broadway and London’s West End.

The 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Eternals,” directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao, was among the first in that series to meet predominantly negative reviews. It currently ranks at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and 52 on Metacritic. And one of its stars, “Big Sick” co-writer and Oscar nominee Kumail Nanjiani, took that criticism to heart.
“The reviews were bad, and I was too aware of it,” he said on a recent episode of the podcast “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum.”
“I was reading every review and checking too much,” Nanjiani added, confessing that when the press tour for the film concluded, he ended up on a therapist’s couch.
“It was really, really hard because Marvel thought that movie was going to be really, really well-reviewed,” he explained. “They lifted the embargo early and put it in some fancy movie festivals and they sent us on a big global tour to promote the...

It’s rare for a hit TV show to end quite as definitively as Top Boy. The London-set crime drama finished in September 2023 with a full stop instead of a comma. After five acclaimed series (two on its original Channel 4 home before cancellation and three after its Drake-assisted revival on Netflix) the series came to a close, and fans had to wave goodbye to the Summerhouse Estate.
But not for too long. Soon after the final series concluded, Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett published a tie-in novel Jaq: A Top Boy Story, which is out now in paperback. It’s the story of the Summerhouse gang as told from the perspective of one of its lieutenants who climbed the ranks all the way to a major confrontation with the gang leaders – Jaq, as played by Jasmine Jobson.

One of the most quoted pieces of Hollywood wisdom holds that 90 percent of directing is casting. You bring the right actors together, and you're off to the races. This is, of course, laughably simplistic. You could argue that 90 percent of directing is writing because there's no movie or show to make if there's nothing on the page. And many directors will tell you that their films don't truly come together until they're hunkered down with their editor in post-production.
The truth, obviously, is that film and television production is a collaborative process that requires numerous people with expertise in different disciplines to do what they do at the highest level possible. And when it comes to casting, there is absolutely an art to finding, after untold hours of reels and cold reads, the ideal actor for each role — especially if you're trying to launch a successful television series. The determination was made by the Writers Branch executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and when Oscar nomination voting begins on Jan. 11, voters will only be permitted to consider “Barbie” in the set category.
The film will join a fairly crowded field of strong contenders of adapted works, including “Oppenheimer,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Poor Things,” and “All of Us Strangers” just for starters. It is assumed that Warner Bros., the studio behind “Barbie,” assumed the Original Screenplay would be less competitive and the property is based more on IP than a previously-produced work.

To be or not to be a troublesome theatergoer? That is the question Andrew Scott tackled head-on during a 2017 production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
The Fleabag and Sherlock star has revealed that he halted his Olivier Award-nominated Almeida Theatre performance after he spotted that an audience member had opened his laptop.
Scott told Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused that he paused in the middle of Hamlet’s famous soliloquy to stare down the distracted ticket holder, despite colleagues urging him to continue.
“When I was playing Hamlet, a guy took out his laptop — not his phone, his laptop — while I was in the middle of ‘to be or not to f***ing be’,” Scott said. “I was pausing and [the stage team] were like, ‘Get on with it’ and I was like, ‘There’s no way’.”
Scott said the audience member was nudged by the woman next to him and recognized the error of his ways.

The current Oscar frontrunners for Best Actor and Best Actress according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users are Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”). However, they both face serious competition from the stars of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan. If the co-stars both win, “Maestro” would be the first film since “As Good As It Gets” to win both lead acting Oscars.
SEEBradley Cooper (‘Maestro’) makes Critics Choice Awards history
“Maestro” chronicles the decades-long relationship between conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and actress Felicia Montealegre (Mulligan). Their love story spans over 30 years from the time they met at a party in 1946 and continuing through their quarter-century marriage. But winning matching Oscars isn’t easy. To date only seven films have won both lead acting awards. They are:
“It Happened One Night” (1934) – Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) – Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher...
