A sad and moving drama with thrills, intrigue and full of strange characters
ma-cortes25 October 2023
Gabi (Najwa Nimri), is a marginal and manipulative young thief who lives in a sordid world, has a lover, Gema (Carla Calparsoro). Babi is a really marginalized young woman, a thief who subsists within a gang and whose life consists of avoiding the police. Gaby carries out some robberies with her band made up of petty criminals: Manu (Alfredo Villa), Butano (Ion Gabella) and Gema (Carla Calparsoro). In her world, Gabi manages to always control her companies, exerting rare control over her cronies. Although after a robbery she is attracted to a mature woman, Carmina (Charo López) , a cleaning lady, alcoholic and without a job and whose man is in jail thinking that when he gets out she will have a child with him, Gabi identifies her as woman of her dreams and the feeling of being someone in life. Gabi tries to convince her to become a wonderful woman, who cares for her and loves her, and gives her a roof over her head and human warmth.he hook she uses is her overwhelming personality and green marble shoes.

A romantic song to the imagination as a means of subsistence in an absolutely predatory world. A surprising exercise in style that relies heavily on a peculiar relationship established between the two protagonists: Gabi and Carmina, based on Gabi's fantasy that Carmina becomes someone she is not. Produced by El Deseo, the prestigious production company from by Pedro and Agustin Almodóvar, it is the second film by Daniel Calpalsosoro, the drama of some miserable dreamers who attempt to survive in a world invented by themselves and who deceive each other under the leadership of the strongest. Good interpretations from Najwa Nimri as the young who looks for someone who fills the void of her senseless life, giving her a house as well as human warmth and Charo López as an unemployed alcoholic who turns her into the woman of her dreams. The starring Najwa Nimri was the director's wife when the movie was filmed. Tha two protagonists are well accompanied by a nice support cast, such as: Alfredo Villa, Ion Gabella, Carla Calparsoro , Kandido Uranga, and brief appearances from Ismael Martinez, Mariví Bilbao and Aldo Sambrell

The film is acceptable and passable but he director lets himself be carried away by the force of the images, leaving aside logical exploration and delivering an unfinished end with many questions without resolving. Calparsoro shoots efficiently , though it is weighed down by a script with a abstract and quiet vocation.

Atmospheric and evocative cinematograhy by cameraman Kiko de la Rica, being urgent a perfect remastering because the film copy is wornout. As well as enjoyable and stirring musical by Alberto Iglesias, Pedro Almodóvar's regular. This is his secod film, after ¨Salto al Vacio¨ , and belongs a trilogy set in Basque Country and starred by Najwa Nimri formed by ¨Salto al Vacío¨, ¨Pasajes¨ and ¨A ciegas¨, though a bit later on Daniel dedicated himself to a preferably commercial cinema in which thrillers and action films predominate. Calparsoro was born in Barcelona, though he is considered to be a Basque director .At the time he married Najwa Nimri , subsequently he divorced and married actress Patricia Vico, both actresses have interpreted his films . Calparsoro has become an expert and prolific filmmaker, preferently on thrillers and action , including them dramatic elements, such as ¨Ausentes¨, ¨Asfalto¨, ¨Guerreros¨ , ¨Invasor¨ , ¨El aviso¨, ¨El castigo¨, ¨La ira¨, ¨Inocentes¨ , and two very successful : ¨Combustión¨ and ¨100 años de perdón¨. Rating 5.5 , average , but decent and acceptable .
