Ole Bornedal follows up his 90s suspense thriller Nightwatch and goes back to the same creepy building
Thirty years ago, just before the Dogme 95 movement raised the profile of Danish film-making, Ole Bornedal’s suspense thriller Nightwatch was what success for the country’s cinema looked like. Basically a modest but moderately clever genre exercise, it starred a young chiselled-cheeked Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, later cast as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, as a student called Martin who gets a job as a nightwatchman at a municipal building that contains a morgue. Partly because of a dare by his reckless buddy Jens, Martin ends up becoming a suspect in that most 1990s of cinematic plot devices, a string of murders of sex workers by a serial killer. The last act is all Wtf-twists, blue-hued lighting and stabby strings on the soundtrack, but the cast, which also includes the always-great Sofie Grabol as Martin’s girlfriend Kalinka,...

As a recent new grandfather, Mads Mikkelsen couldn’t be happier, but he doesn’t smile much in his new movie. An earthy 18th-century period piece, The Promised Land sees the Dane play a hard-up veteran, Ludvig Kahlen, who is determined to turn the blasted heaths of Jutland into a thriving farmland. It’s a Western of sorts, which becomes noticeably clearer when Kahlen starts to cross swords with a competing local landowner, but, for Mikkelsen, it’s a subversive alpha male story of the kind he does so well, from the brutal Viking fantasy Valhalla Rising to the white-cold survival drama Arctic.
In his homeland, the film has a much more blunt title, Bastarden, which drills much further down into the essence of the character. “The literal meaning in English is being the illegitimate son of someone,” the actor explains, “but it also means, obviously, to be an asshole.

There’s Violent Mads.. And Quiet Mads..
And now there’s Very Quiet Mads.
In his fifth Danish Oscar entry, “The Promised Land,” a Nordic pioneer Western from Nicolaj Arcel (Mikkelsen’s director from a decade ago on the nominated “A Royal Affair”), Mikkelsen delivers an almost silent, stoic, physical performance as captain-turned-potato-farmer Ludvig von Kahlen as he tries to tame the 18th-century Danish heath.
As the bastard son of a nobleman and his maid, making something of a piece of turf is the only way for the veteran to move up into the upper class. “He so desperately wants to become part of something that he hates, nobility,” Mikkelsen told IndieWire during a recent interview in Los Angeles. “They don’t deserve it. They haven’t worked for anything. He decides that he wants to be part of it.”
Back then people didn’t talk about their feelings. “His range of emotions is limited,...

Exclusive: There is a little-discussed Hollywood rumor, explains Nicolas Winding Refn and his long-time collaborator Matthew Read, that Scooby Doo only came to be because Warners failed to land the rights to adapt The Famous Five.
And when you look at the two properties and their uncanny similarities, this argument does begin to hold some weight. Both have daring female characters from a bygone era, ridiculous story-of-the-week capers that always end neatly, and, of course, those lovable pooches — in the former case Scooby and in the latter, Timmy.
If the rumor is true, Winding Refn is thankful for how things played out, as he credits both generation-traversing works with influencing his career and driving his love for the screen. Now, more than 50 years on from when Warner Bros. allegedly failed to land the rights, the Denmark-born director has become the latest to take on best-selling English children’s writer Enid Blyton’s iconic novel series,...

Don’t trust Mads Mikkelsen with your script.
“‘Casino Royale’ was the first screenplay with my name on every single page. Which also means that if you lose it, it’s on you. I got on a plane, started to read it and I fell asleep. Then I got out and just left it there,” he told the stunned audience at the Zurich Film Festival.
“I was lucky some cleaning person threw it away and didn’t know what it was. That could have been the end of my career, right then.”
In Martin Campbell’s 2006 smash that marked Daniel Craig’s debut as 007, Mikkelsen went on to play Le Chiffre.
“The ‘smartest’ Bond villain? He lost $100 million to a man who couldn’t play poker. Not that smart.”

When Lucasfilm announced that Mads Mikkelsen would play the main villain in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," there was much rejoicing. Over the last 20 years, Mikkelsen has established himself as a master of menace. He's a skin-crawling masochist as Le Chiffre in "Casino Royale," a deliciously evil master of the Mystic Arts in "Doctor Strange" and a creepily seductive cannibalistic psychiatrist in the frustratingly short-lived NBC drama "Hannibal."
That Mikkelsen could put a fresh spin on a character who'd been portrayed by such thespian giants as Brian Cox and Anthony Hopkins left viewers breathless. We thought we knew Hannibal Lecter, and we were so very wrong. Mikkelsen could've become a go-to Hollywood bad guy at this point, but he kept a foot in the Danish film industry that vaulted him to international stardom and turned in what is, to date, his best performance as a milquetoast high school...

Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn is infamous for being one of the most provocative filmmakers working today, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that several of his favorite films are some of the most disturbing movies ever made. Over the years, Refn has given wide-ranging interviews that don’t hide the influences that have driven his feature films, from “Pusher” to “Bronson,” “Drive” to “Only God Forgives,” “The Neon Demon” and more.
Born in 1970, Refn made his directorial debut at 26 years old with “Pusher,” a violent crime thriller that introduced the cinematic world to the talents of Mads Mikkelsen. Two sequels followed in 2004 and 2005, and 1999’s “Bleeder” was another Copenhagen-set crime drama starring Mikkelsen. His initial excursions into English-language filmmaking, including the John Turturro-led “Fear X,” the Tom Hardy vehicle “Bronson,” and another Mikkelsen film “Valhalla Rising,” were all moderately well received, although most failed to entirely take...

Théo Jollet's Meet Doug is now showing exclusively on Mubi starting July 12, 2023, in the series Brief Encounters.I've always been fascinated by the spaces where I grew up, wedged between the average town and the countryside. I spent my teenage years around municipal football pitches, snack bars and other multi-purpose halls. The way that these human traces, concreted and poorly maintained, come in direct contact with forests, rivers, and peat bogs, all form the ground that nurtures the imagination of my films. Later on, I met Martin Maire and Thomas Trichet, with whom I still work actively on a number of projects, including Meet Doug. Together we discovered works such as Nicolas Winding Refn's Pusher trilogy, and shows such as The Wire by David Simon and Ed Burns, or The Sopranos by David Chase. These early inspirations gave rise to Doug, a young loser, delinquent through petty crime,...

It’s safe to say that no one saw this one coming. Danish enfant terrible Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive, The Neon Demon and the Pusher trilogy, has been tapped to reboot The Famous Five, based on Enid Blyton’s classic series of children’s books.
Blyton wrote 21 books on the adventures of the group of four children — Julian, Dick, Anne and George, along with their dog Timmy — beginning with Five on a Treasure Island, first published in 1942. The books have been adapted for television multiple times.

The third season of "The X-Files" featured a memorable episode titled "Pusher." Penned by none other than "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan, the story pitted Agents Mulder and Scully against a guy who had the ability to "push" people with his mind and a few suggestive words. Needless to say, the titular pusher uses his ability to manipulate people for evil, and only Mulder and Scully can stop him — unless he alters their minds, too!
It's a pretty good episode, and it's pretty clear that it must be a favorite of Robert Rodriguez because he rather shamelessly rips it off for his new movie "Hypnotic." Working with co-writer Max Borenstein, director Rodriguez creates a film that frequently feels like an extended "X-Files" episode, and when it's not doing that, it's rather liberally borrowing from the work of Christopher Nolan. As many of you Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fans know, before Vince Gilligan became a demi-God of modern television in the late aughts, he was learning the ropes under the hands of Chris Carter, the father of The X-Files. Gilligan wrote or co-wrote 30 episodes of the classic sci-fi series, which undoubtedly played a key part in his success many years later. Carter gave Gilligan enough creative freedom that allowed him to play out the full scope of his ideas ranging from suspenseful to touchingly dramatic to campy and downright hilarious. As a result, he’s written some of the most gripping and beloved episodes in the show’s history.
Gilligan had great talent to begin with, but it was the versatility of The X-Files that permitted his creativity to flourish in numerous ways. Now, we’re here to highlight some of the finest work he’s done for the series through nine seasons.

Though you’ll undoubtedly forget many times while you’re watching it, Prime Video’s music drama Daisy Jones & The Six is not based on a true story. At least, not really. Adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel of the same name, this series about the titular band was inspired by the real life drama of classic ’70s rock group Fleetwood Mac.
While Fleetwood Mac is very much real (and great!), Daisy Jones & The Six is not real (though also great!). Still, that does not make the Behind the Music-esque drama they experience in these 10 episodes feel any less real. Contributing to that sense of verisimilitude is that the cast of Daisy Jones & The Six all fit their roles to a tee.

The series introduces a brand new young heroine, Miu, who travels through Copenhagen's criminal netherworld. He adds in this video that the original pitch was to extended his Pusher series, but it's actually about a woman becoming a "superhero." The series stars Angela Bundalovic as Miu, who's joined by Lola Corfixen and Zlatko Buric, plus a big supporting cast featuring Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang, Dragana Milutinovic, Mikael Bertelsen, Mads Brügger, and more. We don't usually get to see lengthy, full-on videos like...

Films are a form of escapism. Some people gravitate towards slice-of-life dramas, while others enjoy bone-chilling horror. Whatever the genre, when executed correctly, a movie should whisk you away from your day-to-day routine.
Anxiety cinema is guaranteed to erase everything around you. You may be surprised that distracting yourself this way is also quite beneficial. Mental health experts confirm that watching something stressful like a horror flick is a brilliant way to channel and release your worries. Of course, watching a film that makes your chest pound isn't always therapeutic. Sometimes, we're merely out for an adrenaline rush or even bragging rights that we're able to sit through something psychologically grueling.
Nail-biting cinema uses everything in its arsenal to leave us on edge. Overlapping dialogue, frenetic scores, and head-spinning camerawork are all trademarks of this subgenre. I love assaulting my senses, so I'm here to guide you to your own state of panicked euphoria.

The first time Nicolas Winding Refn returned home to Denmark from L.A., it was out of financial necessity.
After the barnstorming success of his first two films, Pusher (1996) and Bleeder (1999), Copenhagen-set crime dramas starring a then-unknown actor by the name of Mads Mikkelsen, Refn went Hollywood with the ambitious psychological thriller Fear X (2003) starring John Turturro and Deborah Kara Unger. But Fear X bombed so badly, it forced Refn’s film company Jang Go Star into bankruptcy and sent the director home to try to repay a 5.5 million, in Danish currency, debt with a pair of Pusher sequels.
Late-career redemption came with Drive (2011), starring Ryan Gosling, which won Refn the best director honor in Cannes (and picked up an Oscar nomination for best sound editing), and The Neon Demon (2016), another LA-set film, which established Refn’s trippy, neon-tinged aesthetic among a growing based of art-house fans.

Il Buco (Michelangelo Frammartino)
With Il Buco, Michelangelo Frammartino returns to the Calabrian countryside 12 years after Le Quattro Volte. Oscillating between a shepherd slowly dying and a nearby cave-diving expedition, Frammartino and cinematographer Renata Berta capture the movement inside their static frames with elegance. A soccer ball is kicked back and forth over the cave entrance, upping the stakes of an errant kick, burning magazine pages float down into the darkness illuminating the cave depths for the explorers and the audience—Il Buco is an experiential ode to death as the final frontier. – Caleb H.

Copenhagen Cowboy is a noir-thriller series written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, starring Angela Bundalovic, Zlatko Buric, and Lola Corfixen.
An odyssey where the mystical meets the mob on a neon colored stage. Harsh, brutal, stylized and very aesthetic – this is not a series for the faint of heart.
About the Series Copenhagen Cowboy (2022-)
A peculiar number that will be to the liking of Winding Refn and Lynch fans alike. The mystical merges with the most crude of the underground world of crime.
In six episodes we follow Miu, the young woman who is believed to have special powers, and is used as a charm of sorts. Initially by the superstitious “medieval” mob auntie, a middle-aged woman who yearns to get pregnant. And so, it takes off in the dank setting of a brothel, where Miu will work subtle magic while she observes the strange goings-on. Her journey does not stop there,...

To understand modern Russia, it’s essential to understand the rise of gangster culture in the 90s, as traditional structures were eroded in favour of a lawless, wild East. In many ways Russia still maintains a gangster-like structure, right up to the higher echelons of the government. With Gypsy Son, directing duo Robert Mentov and Dwight Jantzi combine to recreate the murky, morally comprised world of the post-Soviet union, telling the story of a gangster reconciling his dark duty with religious guilt. Aided by a gorgeous film tone, lived-in supporting actors, an evocative use of light and colour and a mesmerising synth soundtrack, this short has a spiritual, holy feel despite the horror of its subject matter. Dn alum Mentov returns to tell us about setting the film in the 1990s, recreating Russia within Canada, finding new lighting sources at the last minute and being inspired by the Pusher series...

A pandemic and the closure of cinemas didn’t stop Cannes Film Festival-winning Nicolas Winding Refn from creating, the Drive filmmaker hunkering down with his family to make the new noir Netflix series Copenhagen Cowboy which drops on Thursday, January 5.
The six-episode series follows Mui, a lone wolf protagonist much like the crime crusaders in Refn’s repertoire, i.e. Ryan Gosling’s Driver in Drive and Julian in Only God Forgives, and Mads Mikkelsen’s Tony in the director’s Pusher franchise. Known to possess a gift, Mui is bought as a “lucky coin” to help cure a much older woman’s fertility problems.

In recent years, Nicolas Winding Refn has become known to many domestic audiences for his neon-tinged, Los Angeles-set films such as “Drive” and “The Neon Demon.” But before that, the Danish director rose to prominence for documenting the criminal underbelly of Copenhagen in the “Pusher” trilogy. When the Covid-19 pandemic prevented him from traveling outside his home country to work, he set his sights on Copenhagen once again.
Refn’s latest project is “Copenhagen Cowboy,” a new six-episode Netflix series that he previously described as a “poetic neo-noir.” The project recently wrapped production and is set to premiere later this year on the streaming service, following its official debut at the Venice Film Festival. The series, which Refn created and directed, stars Angela Bundalovic, Lola Corfixen, and Zlatko Buric, as well as Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang, Dragana Milutinovic, Mikael Bertelsen, and Mads Brügger.

It took a pandemic and a lockdown for “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn to make a directorial comeback in Denmark, where he had delivered the “Pusher” trilogy early in his career.
“Sometimes the strangest things come in mysterious ways, and this is one of those,” Refn says of “Copenhagen Cowboy,” his Netflix original series, slated to world premiere Sept. 9 at the Venice Film Festival.
Since “Drive,” Winding Refn has directed the Bangkok-set thriller “Only God Forgives,” with “Drive” star Ryan Gosling; “The Neon Demon,” with Elle Fanning playing an aspiring model in Los Angeles.; and the Amazon Prime Video series “Too Old to Die Young,” starring Miles Teller as a grieving cop in crime-ridden Southern California. He was preparing another project set abroad when the pandemic hit.

Although Mads Mikkelsen arrived at the Sarajevo Film Festival to receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award for his outstanding contribution to the art of film, many of the crowd who attended the event’s morning “Coffee With…” event on Monday seemed, rather worryingly, to be fans of the Danish star’s TV work — notably NBC’s cannibal drama Hannibal. Nevertheless, the actor took their questions in his stride as part of a wide-ranging conversation that embraced his early career in Danish indie cinema, his move to the U.S. and the MCU, his affection for Pink Floyd, and his love of football. “I always wanted to make money out of sports,” he quipped. “It never happened.”

Vince Gilligan’s sole script on the 2005 ‘Night Stalker’ reboot is the perfect stepping stone between the writer’s two television universes.
“There are countless stories in the city, about the lives lived here, about how the fates of others intertwine with our own in ways we can never expect or predict.”
The X-Files was one of the most significant cultural touchstones to come out of the 1990s and it forever changed the shape of genre storytelling on television. Breaking Bad and its prequel spin-off series, Better Call Saul, have very much done the same for television in the 2010s and ‘20s, albeit in very different ways. Vince Gilligan is the common factor between these completely unique worlds, but he also wrote a single episode of 2005’s reboot of the totemic supernatural procedural series, Kolchak: The Night Stalker.

What do a baby with lasers for eyes, a man with hammers for hands and a girl with personified poop all have in common? They are all superpowered characters featured in “The Boys Presents: Diabolical,” the insane animated anthology series set in the world of Amazon Prime’s hit live-action Nsfw series “The Boys.” Like its distant cousin “Invincible,” also created by Eric Kripke, “Diabolical” is a violent, bloody adaptation of an equally violent and bloody graphic novel with a star-studded cast of voices. But that’s where the similarities end.
Where “Invincible” primarily pulls from its comic book canon directly, “The Boys: Present: Diabolical” is a series of shorts set in the universe of the superheroes The Seven, their merciless corporate benefactors Vought and the rogue CIA squad nicknamed The Boys – without making much use of them.

The white-hot moment of the Romanian new-wave film renaissance is long in the past. “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu” came out in 2005, “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” in 2007. Other landmarks of Romanian cinema also now go back quite a ways, like “Police, Adjective” (2009), “If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle” (2010), and “Graduation” (2016). That’s not to say there haven’t been good Romanian films of late — earlier this year, I championed Two Lottery Tickets, a kind of droll Romanian Jim Jarmusch film. The bitter truth, though, is that over the last decade the profile of international impact and acclaim that Romanian cinema once held has radically diminished.
It might jump-start again with the appearance of “Miracle,” one of the best films I’ve seen at the Venice Film Festival. It’s the third feature written and directed by Bogdan George Apetri, and it shares many of the classic qualities of Romanian cinema.

Magnolia Pictures has nabbed U.S. rights to “Anais in Love,” a French-language comedy that marks the feature directing debut of Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet. The film is a Cannes Critics’ Week selection and centers on a spirited young woman who falls in love with the novelist wife of the man with whom she’s having an affair. Anaïs Demoustier, who previously appeared in “Les Grandes Personnes” and “Marguerite & Julien,” leads the cast.
“Anaïs Demoustier is spectacularly incandescent in this incredibly entertaining film about the vagaries of love as only the French can do,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles.
The film has earned strong reviews since screening at the festival.

Video Version of this Article Photo/Video: Nicolas Winding Refn attends the Cannes Film Festival/Andrea Raffin/Shutterstock/Hollywood Insider YouTube Channel Soon after his low-budget Danish crime saga ‘Pusher’ hit the market, there has been little doubt of this man’s ability to paint truly effective and realistic portraits of the underground world. Nowadays, the Pusher trilogy means as much to Scandinavian cinema as ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Reservoir Dogs’ mean to Hollywood and just as dialogue is the cornerstone of every 90’s Tarantino movie, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Cinema revolves around its flawed characters. As one watches the trilogy giving us a peek at a day in the life of three everymen of Copenhagen’s criminal underbelly, one is left with an exact blueprint of the origins of the vehemently colorful, fatalistic Film-Noir of ‘Drive’. The vast majority of characters in Refn’s films are represented by criminals and...
