Brian Helgeland was one of the writers working on a Game of Thrones spinoff that George R.R. Martin signed off on but one that HBO did not pick up.
In a new interview, Helgeland discusses why the tentatively titled 10,000 Ships series didn’t happen despite his saying his script “came out great.”
“I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original. That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is ever dead,” Helgeland said in an interview with Inverse.
The Man on Fire and L.A Confidential writer says his script, “was based on Queen Nymeria and this little blurb about her that was in a Westeros encyclopedia. Essentially, it was the story of Moses but swapping him out for Nymeria. Her country gets ruined and her people are forced to live on the water, which...

Brian Helgeland is a popular name in the industry for his works in films like Mystic River and L.A. Confidential. The latter even blessed him with an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The renowned screenwriter and producer was near to having his Game of Thrones spin-off series. However, the Ten Thousand Ships series never got a green light from HBO.
A scene from Game Of Thrones
The idea of Brian Helgeland’s Ten Thousand Ships was planned to be based on the mythological story of Moses. The structure and tonality of the story would have been very different from the main Game of Thrones series. Although Helgeland has stated that his script is still there and HBO can pick it if they want, it is highly unlikely due to the present political milieu of the world.
What was Brian Helgeland’s planned Game of Thrones spin-off series about?...

Despite the disappointment of its finale, Game of Thrones undeniably had a successful run, leading many to consider the possibility of spin-offs due to its immense popularity. Brian Helgeland, an Oscar-winning screenplay writer also entertained one such idea and recently discussed why his spinoff script failed to be chosen and the challenges it encountered in a recent interview.

Brian Helgeland elaborated on his involvement with a certain Game of Thrones spin-off which focused on expanding the world of Westeros. Based on Queen Nymeria, who is a legendary figure in the history of Westeros, Queen of Rhoynar, who later founded the kingdom of Nymeria. Although not a lot is known about her, she is known for her strength and leadership.

All "Game of Thrones" fans know the words Valar Morghulis, a Valyrian saying for "All men must die." That phrase almost proved prophetic when it came to HBO's attempts to whittle down the many spin-off shows at various stages in development over the years. Although "House of the Dragon" survived the culling to earn a second season, several others -- the Jon Snow-centric series, an untitled prequel starring Naomi Watts (which actually filmed a full pilot episode before being scrapped), and even a show set in the slums of King's Landing, Flea Bottom -- were doomed to the chopping block.
One of the more fascinating concepts, however, involved a famous figure from Westerosi history known as Nymeria. Titled "Ten Thousand Ships", this, too, never coalesced and we've never known why. Luckily, the folks over at Inverse recently had the chance to sit down with writer Brian Helgeland, known for "A Knight's Tale,...

Brian Helgeland’s Game of Thrones spinoff, Ten Thousand Ships, is getting docked as HBO shelves the project before it can set sail. Helgeland, the director behind films like L.A. Confidential and A Knight’s Tale and screenwriter for the Tony Scott-directed crime drama Man on Fire, spoke with Inverse about the defunct project, saying it would have focused on Queen Nymeria, the warrior-queen who led the Rhoynar refugees to Dorne.
Helgeland speaks with Inverse and makes Ten Thousand Ships sound biblical in scope and story. He likens Queen Nymeria’s tale to the story of Moses, with survivors from a ravaged country setting sail for a new home.
“It came out great, but I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original,” Helgeland explained to Inverse about his spinoff. “That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet,...

Brian Helgeland’s illustrious Hollywood career includes winning an Oscar for writing “L.A Confidential,” directing Heath Ledger’s beloved 2001 comedy “A Knight’s Tale” and scripting films such as “Man on Fire” and “Mystic River.” It also could’ve included a “Game of Thrones” spinoff series had HBO moved forward on his pitch, which was titled “Ten Thousand Ships” and centered on Queen Nymeria.

Fans of the original were ecstatic when Supergiant Games announced Hades 2, and rightfully so. The isometric roguelike quickly climbed the charts after release, becoming one of the best games to release in 2020.
With all the critical and community appeal of the game, along with several accolades, a sequel was only a matter of time. The Greek mythology setting is represented masterfully, and we have the narrator setting the stage for what becomes an intense fight for survival. But who is the narrator? Well, that question may have been answered by the sequel!

Epic Games made a revolution in gaming with Fortnite. The battle royale title went beyond just the collaboration and is forming its own universe within the actual game. Various very popular franchises have been in Fortnite, like Marvel, Star Wars, other videogame characters, and even music stars like Ariana Grande and recently Lady Gaga.
But new leaks are pointing to what will be coming next in Fortnite. It appears that a Greek-themed season is near with the popular gods of this mythology as protagonists; this could also mean a famous Homer to be in the game and not the one from the odyssey.
The Odyssey, Homer of The Simpsons, and Greek-themed Season Could be Coming to Fortnite Artwork of the next season has reportedly leaked.

Born on March 9, 1949, in New York, Fitzgerald was born into a literary household. Just what is the fanboys’ beef with the director’s cut of The Warriors? Walter Hill’s 1979 cult classic, an adaptation of novelist Sol Yurick’s grungy take on Xenophon’s Anabasis, was always about as close to street-gang realism as West Side Story, regardless of the incidents of urban violence that accompanied The Warriors’s original release. And, by our count, more main characters die violently in the musical.
In 2005, after Hill took the opportunity to insert a few Creepshow-esque comic-book linking segues to stress the film’s dystopic gothic fantasy, the same demographic that undoubtedly didn’t even think twice when purchasing the extended, extra-bloated Lord of the Rings bookshelf set suddenly scrounged up their ethical faculties to howl about the desecration of the “original work.” And it sounded fishy.
Our guess is simply that Hill’s vibrant, “sez you” actioneer strikes full-grown little boys right in the socket.

Vuelta Group, the rising European film studio which recently launched with the high profile acquisitions of France’s Playtime, Germany’s SquareOne and Scandinavia’s Scanbox, is expanding its footprint in Italy and France.
Spearheaded by media finance veterans (and childhood friends) Jerome Levy and David Atlan-Jackson, Vuelta has bought Indiana Production, a leading Italian company founded by Fabrizio Donvito and Marco Cohen, which had Giorgio Diritti’s “Lubo” playing in competition at Venice and just teased its big-budget Netflix series project “The Leopard” and Sky’s “Unwanted.”
Vuelta has also taken a stake in France’s Pan (formerly called Pan-Europeenne), the well-established production and distribution banner headed by Nathalie Gastaldo, Philippe Godeau and Camille Gentet, whose credits include the hit franchises “Largo Winch” and “Legendaries.”
Vuelta bowed last year with more $100 million provided by a U.S. private equity firm and has now diversified its backing through its European partners.

There’s a certain image that comes to mind when you hear “‘The Walking Dead’ set in France.” It’s one filled with undead zombies tearing through Parisian streets and the Eiffel Tower framed by panic. Perhaps shockingly, that ambitious visual language is exactly what the second episode of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” delivers.
“Any filmmaker will tell you one of the hardest things you can ever do is take over the center of a city to create chaos and mayhem,” Daniel Percival, the director of four episodes of “Daryl Dixon” including Sunday’s “Alouette,” told TheWrap. According to Percival, it took “months and months” of negotiating with Paris and city authorities to produce the opening of Episode 2.
“Alouette” opens on a flashback. The series wordlessly follows Isabelle (Clémence Poésy), documenting her life as a thieving party girl. The episode starts with Isabelle perched on the edge of a club’s balcony,...

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
The title of Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 4 — “Among the Lotus Eaters” — is a reference to Greek Mythology, specifically, the idea of lazy, memory-hazy people called “lotus eaters” from The Odyssey. Star Trek referencing older books and myth is nothing new, but, as Trek approaches its 60th anniversary in just three short years, it now commands its own rich mythology.
In “Among the Lotus Eaters,” Strange New Worlds goes back to the roots of Star Trek, both in style, but also, in its deep cuts. Here are all the best references from Trek canon, which, really, we should all start calling “Star Trek mythology.”
USS Cayuga
Captain Batel’s ship, the USS Cayuga appears here in another joint mission with the USS Enterprise. This previously happened in the season 1 finale, “A Quality of Mercy.” Whether or not the Cayuga is a...

“Stan Lee” — a documentary on the man who, along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, created Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther and many other iconic Marvel characters —
selectively focuses on the comic book legend’s career and, to a much lesser extent, his personal life, pruning considerable information about his other ventures and legal disputes as seen on Wikipedia. It’s co-produced by Marvel Studios, so the film, which receives its world premiere at Tribeca Festival and streams on Disney Plus on June 16, expectedly sings his praises.
Lee himself posthumously supplies the first-person voiceover narration, albeit indirectly through various archival interviews and speeches given over the years, which filmmaker David Gelb (“Jiro Dreams of Sushi”) has carefully spliced together based on the chronology of seminal events in his lifetime. To illustrate the narration, Gelb has employed conventional archival footage and photos as well as not-so-conventional comic strips and clay figures.

Ryan Reynolds has some thoughts on why he wasn’t “completely chewed up and spat out” in the showbiz industry early on in his acting career.
The “Deadpool” actor spoke to Et Canada’s Morgan Hoffman at Sunday’s 2023 Canadian Screen Awards, with her mentioning how much he’s accomplished over the years.
Hoffman asked what he’d tell his younger self when he was starring in ’90s TV series “The Odyssey” about everything he’d end up doing in life.
The Canadian star insisted, “I wouldn’t tell him a thing because what was so great about all of that is that my expectations have always been, you know, almost at the floor. So, everything’s been gravy since then.
“And I think my career and my life has been sort of measured in aggregate, you know… I never had this overnight success or anything like that. That’s really allowed me,...

This article contains mild spoilers for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."
"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has hit theaters, and fans like me have been scouring the film to find Easter eggs. Luckily, we don't have to go very far. Though you don't need to know a single them about them, there are plenty on display. The Mushroom Kingdom is bursting with references to the Mario games of yesteryear, especially as Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) takes his new friend Mario (Chris Pratt) to the castle.
Toads (don't ask me to explain the naming conventions ... one of them is called Chanterelle) use golden blocks as sort of an Atm that requires you to smack the block with your head. Another moment has a Toad bringing a Cheep Cheep (the giant goldfish in the game) home as a pet in a bag of water. There is an antique dealer who mentions blowing into...

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 6, "Guns for Hire."
Droids took center stage on the latest episode of "The Mandalorian," at least in terms of the morality and science fiction presented on the show. Oftentimes, "Star Wars" has skirted around the issue of droid rights and the morality involved in using droids for labor, but this installment of "The Mandalorian" took it on as the undercurrent for the episode. Naturally, it borrowed from the work of Philip K. Dick, featuring touchstones from "Blade Runner" throughout the episode.
Titled "Guns for Hire," the episode sees Din Djarin and Lady Bo-Katan Kryze tasked by the elected rulers of Plazir-15 with investigating an odd rash of droid malfunctions plaguing their planet. They live in a veritable utopia where the droids handle all of the labor, leaving the organic beings to lives of art and leisure. What's causing these violent malfunctions...

Austin Butler will star in Sony 3000 Pictures’ adaptation of “City on Fire.” The Don Winslow-penned novel, the first in a series, uses elements of “The Iliad,” “The Odyssey,” “Aeneid” and other Greek dramas and puts them in a contemporary crime sandbox. Butler will play Danny Ryan, a street criminal-turned-ruthless leader amid a gang war between Irish and Italian crime families in New England.
The film will mark the actor’s first role since his Oscar-nominated for playing Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” as well as his first as a producer. Butler will produce the picture alongside David Heyman and Shane Salerno.
3000 Pictures exec Drew Reed was instrumental in tracking the series, while Elizabeth Gabler and Marisa Paiva are overseeing for the studio. All parties hope that the first film will be successful enough to justify feature film adaptations of the next two novels in the series.

This article contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
The original "John Wick" was a fairly straightforward action-packed affair that didn't necessarily offer up any deep meaning or contain some profound philosophical message. The casting of Keanu Reeves, coupled with innovative fight choreography, was enough to make a simple revenge tale seem a little more profound than it actually was. With the introduction of the assassin's hotel, the Continental, a chaotic world was suddenly given some parameters and a set of rules. It was just enough to make it appear as though there was much more going on underneath the surface.
Now, ten years on, "John Wick: Chapter 4" has crafted a mythic construct around the character of John Wick as the man who can't seem to outrun or out-shoot his past. For all his efforts, the body count keeps going up and Wick gets farther and farther away from home,...

1977's "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope" was a huge hit when it came out. In other news, the sky is blue. Part of its appeal was, despite featuring sentient droids, villains in very large and oddly-shaped helmets, space battles, and a battle station that could destroy a planet in moments, it was ultimately a simple tale. Whatever trappings were around the main characters, it was really the story of a young man who dreamed of adventure. He met a guide (Obi-Wan Kenobi), saved a Princess (Leia ... though one could argue that she saved him), and found a roguish friend (Han Solo) who pushed him to do better. He battled evil (Darth Vader) using the power of his mind and belief in himself to win the day. It's the classic hero's journey that humans have been seeing and hearing versions of for millennia, in stories like Homer's...

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the second episode of "The Mandalorian" season 3.
Lightsabers have been a staple of the "Star Wars" franchise since Luke Skywalker saw one for the first time in the Tatooine cave of Obi-Wan Kenobi in "A New Hope." Over the decades, we've learned about the different styles of lightsabers, the Kyber crystals needed to create them, what the different colors might mean, and how to wield them. The Darksaber is a bit different than the rest, however. It was created by Tarre Vizsla a thousand years before "The Mandalorian" takes place. Tarre was the first to be both a Mandalorian and a Jedi, despite the fact that those two groups have a less-than-friendly history. The Jedi held it in their Temple until the Mandalorians freed it. Now their lore says the wielder of the Darksaber has the right to rule Mandalore, but only if they win it through combat.

"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is almost in theaters, and in the new DC movie, there is a brand new threat to our world. The Daughters of Atlas -- Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and Anthea (Rachel Zegler) -- are out of their realm and in ours, looking for an artifact that has the potential to destroy life as we know it.
If the names sound familiar, it's because these are characters from Greek mythology. Their origins have changed a bit: Anthea is actually the Roman name of one of the Graces, and Kalypso is the one who imprisoned Odysseus in "The Odyssey." In the film, they need the wizard's (Djimon Hounsou) staff to complete their task ... and to get those pesky superhero kids in adult bodies out of the way.

China’s Lunar New Year film rush is on par with the holiday film rush in the West, with dozens of premieres jockeying to be the season’s number one blockbuster. In the Chinese queue for this year are films like Donnie Yen’s Kung Fu fantasy Sakra, The Wandering Earth II, the prequel to China’s visionary 2019 sci-fi, and the eagerly anticipated action comedy, Everything Under Control.
It often takes a few months for new Chinese films to cross the pond to the West, and they seldom get theatrical showings. However, Western theaters are becoming increasingly aware of the drawing power of the Lunar New Year and have begun to showcase some special releases in honor of the holiday. This year the U.S. market is treated to a...

For the author, teacher and content producer trio – one of three goals of the grueling and challenging trip was to see Argentina and Messi winning the trophy, which is just a match away.
The trio, who spent 177 days on the road covering 10,000 km and 15 countries between Cape Town and Doha, was joined by Matias Vercesi in Egypt but again has been reduced to a trio with travel agent Silvio heading to Australia, after watching a few matches due to work commitments.
"We want to get to Messi. We are Lucas, Silvio and Lea and we are giving it all for the Scaloneta. We travel by bike to Qatar, crossing Africa and the Middle East. We started in South Africa and we want to see Messi caress the trophy.
"The Odyssey has 3 goals: Get to Qatar to look for the trophy next to the Scaloneta, record a documentary, plant a tree...

Today, Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" is mostly remembered and still revered for the groundbreaking Oscar-nominated visual effects from Phil Tippett's Tippett Studio and Sony Pictures Imageworks (Spi). Losing the Oscar to James Cameron's "Titanic," the incredibly self-aware space epic has stayed in the public consciousness mostly due to the biting satire and enduring soap opera appeal that Verhoeven and the chiseled actors injected into the film. Based on Robert Heinlein's overtly pro-war book of the same name, Verhoeven and his writing partner Ed Neumeier took what they had learned making the dystopian action classic "Robocop" and applied it to their overblown version of "Starship Troopers."
Plans of making a big-budget parody of a sci-fi action blockbuster became even more apparent with the casting of Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards, two classically beautiful actors that looked like they walked out of the pages of a comic book.

Joel and Ethan Coen are some of the most consistent filmmakers around. Nearly every film they put out seems to be just as intelligent and well-written as the others, with tons of memorable characters. In 2000, coming off the great success of hits like "Fargo" and "Raising Arizona," the Coen brothers were hot as they'd ever been. It's no wonder that, for their next project, "O Brother Where Art Thou?," they were able to get huge star George Clooney on board without him giving it a second thought, which Clooney spoke about in a 2000 interview.
"They brought the script and set it down and said 'We wrote this, do you wanna do it?' and I said 'Yeah.' And they go, 'Do you wanna read it?' and I go, 'Well, alright, but I'll do it.'"

New Delhi, Sep 17 (Ians) In an unusual move, Meta-owned WhatsApp is venturing into the film-making business and will premiere its first original short film titled ‘Naija Odyssey’ on Amazon Prime Video and YouTube.
The 12-minute short film tells the story of NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was born in Greece to Nigerian parents.
“The Greek Freak. That’s not me, that’s not all of me. Naija Odyssey, the cross-culture story of Giannis by WhatsApp. Stream Sept 21 on Prime Video,” WhatsApp said in a tweet.
The 12-minute short film signifies WhatsApp’s foray into entertainment, a first for a social media messaging platform.
However, ‘Naija Odyssey” appears to be a way to promote WhatsApp as Antetokounmpo recently signed an endorsement deal with the company, another first for the platform, reports Variety.
“‘Naija Odyssey’ is a story that reinforces how WhatsApp helps us embrace our multifaceted lives. In navigating relationships,...

Jean Luc-Godard, who died Tuesday at the age of 91, was widely known as the King of the French New Wave. Since coming onto the scene in the 1960s, his seminal films such as “Breathless,” “Masculin, Feminin” and “Pierrot Le Fou,” introduced avante-garde techniques that have been since been replicated by innumerable filmmakers in the following decades.
In addition to a scathing intellectualism and stubborn stance against “the establishment”, the Franco-Swiss director was best known for changing the rules of cinema — his use of long-takes, jump-cuts and actor asides are just a few of the innovative practices he employed in his films that are still used to this day.
Thankfully, Godard left behind dozens of unforgettable films, many of which have been restored on Criterion. Below, check out some of Godard’s best films to celebrate the late director:
