- Alex, a seductive woman with a violent boyfriend steals a car and entices a teenager boy Lincoln to join her in robbery and more.
- The film begins with a woman named Alex struggling out of handcuffs one afternoon near the woods, and fleeing. Next we meet Lincoln,an overachieving,super-responsible teenager who has never really done anything exciting,or broken any rules and is teased by a lot of his friends because of it. His mom is obsessed with Christmas even though it's August and is a June Cleaver type, and his dad is a big mouth pushy type who's always wanting him to be the best. That night Lincoln is persuaded to go out with two of his friends even though he has a test to take tomorrow and is trying to choose a good college. They stop at a convenient store with a hip, sardonic clerk (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.)and Alex is inside stuffing her face with things without paying. The clerk quickly spots Lincoln's fake id, but when he gets outside Alex gets him some booze and the other guys are so impressed they persuade her to go with them to one of their houses. Alex quickly sees the other two guys are horny jerks and convinces Lincoln to take their car with her to get more booze, but she has no intention of coming back, and she and Alex go on a road trip, and she robs mostly by persuasion instead of violence, although she does manhandle the young stoner clerk at the next convenient store. She quickly convinces him to give her the money in the register, and she'll stash $300 of it for him in a nearby gas station men's room, which she does, after she and Lincoln sneak out of the store when his father arrives to get Christmas stuff for his mother.Alex calls the other two guys on the car phone and claim she's got more women coming over, but she and Lincoln actually get a motel by themselves and make out. Lincoln becomes upset the next day when he finds she peaked at his scrapbook full of obituaries that he claims to be keeping for a school project while he was asleep, but he ultimately forgives her, and at the next convenient store the clerk Hector is being picked on so much by the bullying manager who also hassles them, that she convinces him to rob the cash register with her. Lincoln's friends call wanting the car back, and he says he'll get it back to them when he can.Alex confesses to Lincoln that she has a cold, distant mother and her father, who did care about her died when she was little. She wants to get away maybe to Europe and start over. Alex and Lincoln go to a bar that night, and Alex wanders off when she sees another woman hitting on Lincoln. Lincoln thinks Alex has left him,and he and the other woman drive off but when a cop pulls them over and shows them a couple of wanted posters, Lincoln is stunned to see Alex is one of the wanted. He drops the other woman back at the bar and he returns to Alex, having protected her and denied knowing her,and now he wants to help her. Alex and Lincoln go to her mother's house that afternoon, and the woman is sick but fed up with Alex's antics, although she is cordial, but she's not too concerned if Alex wants to go to Europe. Alex tells Lincoln their journey is over and wants to give him a cut of the money they've taken. He breaks down and admits he had a brother who was even more of an overachiever than him and he couldn't take it anymore and committed suicide, and now Lincoln is trying to make up for his parents' loss, but also wants to get away from his parents so he won't end up like his brother. Alex's aunt convinces her to take her mother to the hospital. Lincoln waits at the house, but then Alex's violent unstable boyfriend Teddy shows up and gets buddy buddy with Lincoln and they drink beer and play poker. Lincoln doesn't reveal that Teddy was the other person he saw on the wanted poster.Alex returns and wants Teddy to go,but he turns violent and knocks Lincoln out and kidnaps him and Alex, and he has the handcuffs, which he puts on Lincoln. It turns out Alex was fleeing from Teddy in the beginning. They stop at a convenience store. Teddy goes in and gets into an altercation with a talkative, overly friendly dimbulb security guard. Alex manages to get Lincoln free and tries to convince him to run. Teddy sees Lincoln free, and races outside to stop him and Alex, and ends up in a gunfight with the clerk, who wants him to pay for his stuff, and the security guard. Teddy kills them both, but the security guard fatally wounds him before he dies.Teddy manages to shoot Alex before he dies. Lincoln tries to drive her to the hospital but she dies in the car. He takes her back home, wipes the blood off her, puts her in bed and covers her."You're safe now." He gets the money they took out of the scrapbook where he had hid it,and drives back to his neighborhood. For a moment he thinks a police car is following him with its siren going, but it goes past him when he pulls over. He arrives back in his neighborhood that night, returns his friends' car,and walks back home where his mother has the house decorated for Christmas even though it's August. He tells his mother he never applied to the fancy college she thought he did, but she already knows. He says he wanted to get away from his family but now knows they need him and he wants to go to a local college and stay with them. His mother says his father will ultimately understand. His father has secretly overheard the conversation, and seems to accept it. The next night Lincoln goes to a convenient store and buys some young girls some beer in the final scene
