Hmmm… read the following tweet from Cannes Film Festival insider, Cédric Succivalli, who tweets as @OnTheCroisette, stating: “An African film is reported to be in competition this year, which is very rare these days.”
Of course, my brain began racing, trying to figure out what film that could be. First of all, he’s right, it’s Extremely rare for an African American film to screen in competition at Cannes.
The last time a film by an African American filmmaker screened in competition at Cannes was in… drum roll… 1991!! The film was Jungle Fever, directed by Spike Lee. Wow! We have to go back almost 20 years! Last year Precious screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival, not in competition, so it doesn’t count.
Far more films by native African filmmakers have screened in competition at the festival than those by and about African Americans.
