Sex & Nudity

  • A young man and woman are shown kissing several times.
  • Fantine is fired at her job because of having a child outside of marriage. She then works as a prostitute to provide money for her daughter.
  • Fantine is seen lying in bed covered by a blanket, she uncovers herself to offer her body as payment for rent. She is seen wearing what looks like an old-fashioned bikini. She isn't naked, but you can see some cleavage, her stomach and her legs hiding the rest of her body.
  • Prostitutes are seen soliciting. One man says that sleeping with Fantine is like sleeping with a corpse. A group of men rough up Fantine and put snow down the front of her dress.

Violence & Gore

  • One man slams another's head into a wall repeatedly, causing blood to spill. The man is not killed and is later shown with a bruise on his forehead.
  • A prisoner is shown being hit and kicked by a group of guards.
  • Women are smacked several times throughout the film.
  • An older man is truck in the face and later shown with a bruise on his eye.
  • Very little blood is shown in the movie. For a short part of the film there is a revolutionary uprising that takes place and some minor battle sequences are portrayed related to this, which involves some people being shot at a distance and slashed with swords. One child ventures out to collect items from dead soldiers and is shot. One character dies of an illness. One character kills himself by jumping into a river.

Profanity

  • God's name is used in vain at least once.
  • Many uses of the word whore, prostitute, slut, and bastard. As men are harassing a prostitute on the street, the phrase "lets give her tits a little colour" is used as the man grabs a woman's nipples through her clothes, which is seen from a distance.
  • A man calls a woman a 'b*tch'.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Drinking is shown in a few scenes throughout and a few drunk people. This would not be obvious to most children.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Characters are threatened with guns throughout the film..
  • Fantine looks very sickly when she is ill which may be difficult for some viewers.
  • Several incidents of assault and hitting, some against women. Characters are shown running away from the police jumping from a roof and climbing a wall which is intense. Some child peril.
