- Henry is about to jump off a bridge when he hears a cry for help. He helps Karen, who had also planned suicide. They're both on Tower Bridge, London, because somebody wronged them. Revenging each other gives them a reason to live.
- Depressed businessman Henry Bell (Sam Neill) and aristocrat Karen Knightly (Helena Bonham Carter) save each other's lives one night when they are ready to jump off London's Tower Bridge. Karen invents a revenge plot. She will punish Henry's enemy Bruce Tick (Steve Coogan) and Henry will destroy the life of Karen's enemy Imogen Staxton-Billing (Dame Kristin Scott Thomas).
- Col. Marcus walks into a church where an organist is playing music more suited to Halloween than a church. He begins telling God about Henry Bell, admitting He already knows. Occasionally Col. Marcus narrates what the audience sees, or he is shown again at the church.
Henry is on London's Tower Bridge with a suitcase filled with papers. He climbs over the railing, appearing likely to jump. Before he can, he hears a cry for help. The suitcase and papers fall into the Thames as he tries to find where the cry for help is coming from. It is Karen Knightly, who got caught as she was trying to jump and is now hanging over the river. Henry rescues her.
Henry and Karen get into her red MG and they go to a restaurant where Karen changes into a sexy dress and makes herself look prettier. The working class men react as expected. Henry explains that he lost his wife and moved from a house into a flat, his secretary Elaine was let go, and his company replaced him with Bruce Tick. Karen says Tony cheated on her with Imogen. She says since she hates Imogen and Henry hates Bruce, each one should kill the enemy of the other. Her angry comments give the men the impression Henry is mistreating her but she indicates she can take care of herself.
Karen drives Henry to a large house in the country, with the architectural style of a castle, to give him a place to sleep. Henry wakes up naked except for a furry toy covering his genitals, and tied to the bed. The elderly maid Winnie does not seem surprised by this and asks if Henry wants breakfast. More than anything, Henry wants clothes. Winnie finds him a frilly fluorescent green shirt and bright blue pants. The dining room has birds flying around, and Karen's brother Oliver is driving his motorcycle through the house. Norma is the awkward young trainee maid and she has difficulty serving breakfast.
Karen returns and Henry asked what happened to his clothes. Karen says she burned them so he wouldn't leave. and that they had a great time even if Henry can't remember. She then introduces Henry to a group of people on horses for a hunt, claiming he is the accountant. The hounds harass Henry. Imogen is rude when she meets Henry, but she and Anthony appear to be back together. Karen gave the impression Tony (Anthony) was her husband, but he is Imogen's husband. Col. Marcus is Imogen's uncle and doesn't seem impressed with Henry.
In the city, Bruce is frustrated on his first day, claiming Henry left things a mess. He demands Lydia find him a secretary. Lydia says they have found him a very qualified girl to fill in temporarily. In fact, it is Karen, with thick glasses, fake teeth and conservative clothes, acting nerdy. Earlier, she had visited Elaine and found out how to get the job.
Back at the castle, Henry asks Oliver about a burned house on the property. Oliver explains when he was about ten and Karen was thirteen, their parents died in a fire there. While this was hard on them, they had Winnie and the other servants to take care of them.
Henry is in the woods when Imogen passes on her horse Silas, who is hard to handle. Imogen falls off and Henry takes her to the castle to take care of her injury. They seem interested in each other, which dismays Anthony when he arrives. Anthony blames Imogen for having a horse she can't handle, and seems less than concerned about how his wife is. Henry gets a phone call from Karen, who is in the loo, explaining what she has done.
Later, Henry visits Imogen, who feeds the pigs at her farm. Their potential romance is clearly happening.
Bruce asks Karen to tell his wife Hilary he will be on a different train so she won't worry. Karen calls Hilary and while playing loud music gives the impression she and Bruce are fooling around. Later Bruce has an asthma attack while signing papers.
During a competition, Henry and Imogen sneak into one of the buildings used for horses and Anthony catches them. Tony warns Henry that Imogen is his, and Henry says that's up to Imogen. Anthony challenges Henry to a duel and Henry is told he must go through with it, but the reward if he wins is that he marries Imogen.
Bruce upset Hilary somehow so he tells Karen he bought something nice for Hilary. He puts the present in his coat, but Hilary removes a pair of sexy panties and sneaks those into the coat, and disposes of the present. Hilary is furious when Bruce gets home.
Henry finds out Anthony was having multiple affairs, and his latest was Norma, so he visits Norma's mother Daphne, who does women's hair at her house. Daphne is furious and attacks her punk rocker daughter, who looked so much more respectable at work. A client watches the whole incident. Daphne goes after Anthony and the commotion upsets the entire neighborhood, resulting in visits by cops and an ambulance.
Meanwhile, Hilary's wife throws Bruce's stuff out the window. Later, Karen and Bruce met at a restaurant. Karen gives the impression she will help Bruce when his wife and her mother arrive, but Karen comes out like Madonna and makes it appear she and Bruce are fooling around. Hilary demands a divorce. Bruce has an asthma attack and Karen can't find his inhaler, or at least that's what she says. Henry is dismayed when Karen says Bruce is dead.
In the woods, the experienced Anthony and the novice Henry prepare for the duel. Col. Marcus, Oliver and Percy are there to witness. Percy is the referee. Henry tries to stop what he finds ridiculous in the 20th century, and his gun accidentally goes off, mortally wounding Anthony.
Back at the castle, Karen is acting erratically. She says Imogen must die and will not accept that Henry can be with Imogen. She drives Oliver's motorcycle through the house and soon the castle is on fire. Karen cannot be found and Henry brings Oliver outside, despite the fact Oliver wanted to save his beloved motorcycle. Winnie is also safe. One of the firefighters thinks there will be little left to save. Imogen arrives, having seen the fire from a distance, and she and Henry appear to be happy now.
Col. Marcus finishes his talk with God, asking that Henry not be considered a cheater, and reminds the organist she is supposed to be playing for a wedding, not a funeral. The audience, but not Col. Marcus, discovers the organist is Karen, wearing those thick glasses, with a sinister expression on her face.
