10. On The Waterfront (1954)

9. Chinatown (1974)

Disney’s and Pixar’s movies are full of easter eggs, which are a popular way of entertaining fans, as they are not just looking for them, but are also interpreting them and the meaning of their presence in the work. Such easter eggs are present in other works as well, not just movies, but this discussion is about a very special easter egg that potentially connects two big franchises created by Pixar.
The first one is Toy Story, which basically launched Pixar into orbit and became a critically acclaimed and beloved animated franchise with a fifth installment on the way, while the second one is Monsters, Inc., a very popular series as well which managed to become a standalone franchise with some beloved moments and characters. And while Pixar has never officially connected any of its individual animated universes, some fans think that a Monsters, Inc. easter egg confirms...

It’s been five years since Toy Story 4, the critically acclaimed fourth installment in one of Pixar’s greatest animated franchises, was released. While a sequel was announced back in February 2023 by Bob Iger, the movie is still not even close to being released, but we are happy to say that we finally have an official release date for the upcoming Toy Story 5 movie, which is set for a June 19, 2026 release. Yes, it’s a long wait, but Toy Story fans will have gotten used to it by now since the shortest span between two movies from the franchise was an enormous four years, which passed between the release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2.

It's astonishing to look back at John Lasseter's 1995 film "Toy Story" and regard how rudimentary it looks by today's standards. "Toy Story" was the first widely distributed CGI-animated feature film, and it felt overwhelmingly revolutionary at the time. Many were astonished at how expressive and fun CGI characters could be, and the film's success effectively ushered in a sea change in the animation world. In 2024, traditional cel animation is incredibly uncommon, and CGI is the naturally assumed standard.
CGI characters are designed to essentially be "puppets," in terms of their elasticity. Animators, at least at the time, were forced to stay on-model, only able to expand eyeballs or raise eyebrows so high. It wouldn't be for years that CG characters could mutate, squash, and stretch the way hand-drawn characters could. "Toy Story" benefitted from being about, well, toys. Its characters were all made of plastic, so there was an...

While David Zaslav and Bob Iger’s tax-optimization strategy of deleting films and TV shows from their streamers has triggered plenty of agita among creators, the custodians of Hollywood’s digital era have an even greater fear: wholesale decay of feature and episodic files. Behind closed doors and NDAs, the fragility of archives is a perpetual Topic A, with pros sweating the possibility that contemporary pop culture’s master files might be true goners, destined to the same fate as so many vanished silent movies, among them Alfred Hitchcock’s second feature, The Mountain Eagle, and Ernst Lubitsch’s Oscar-winning The Patriot.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Disney not only announces Moana 2, but reveals that the film is arriving this November. More here.
How’s this for a surprise announcement. If you go by the rule of thumb that a Walt Disney Animation Studios movie takes three to four years to bring to fruition at the very least, then to learn of major new release with roughly ten months’ notice is quite something. Especially in the modern era of leaks and internet gossip.
Yet at its shareholder meeting overnight, Disney sprung the news that not only is a Moana 2 animated movie coming, but we’ll be seeing it this very year.
It comes off the back of two commercial disappointments for Walt Disney Animation Studios on the bounce: 2022’s underappreciated Strange World and last winter’s 100th birthday celebration movie Wish.
Moana 2 must be very welcome tonic for those who count the money around the place.

Theatrical movies truly came back in 2023. Despite a major strike and the ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic, audiences returned in droves to watch big releases. From the twin tentpoles of Barbie and Oppenheimer to the more niche faves such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and John Wick: Chapter 4, the cinematic slate of 2023 gave fans of every variety a reason to get back to the cinemas.
Moviemakers hope to continue this trend in 2024, and the key strategy seems to be sequels, prequels, and remakes. Some of these movies come from the artists who captured audiences’ hearts in the first place, while others come from fresh faces, hoping to infuse a familiar tale with new energy.

As always, the hosts of “The View” went all out with their Halloween costumes on Tuesday, this year celebrating their parent network. In honor of the Disney100 celebration, the women hosted the day’s show dressed as their favorite Disney characters.
Granted, the episode started in a fairly spooky way. In the opening minutes, viewers were treated to footage of a horse strutting up to the studio, ridden by none other than The Headless Horseman — er, in this case, Horsewoman.
As the episode kicked off in earnest, it was revealed that host Whoopi Goldberg opted to go with the Headless Horseman as her costume..
You can see photos of the women in costume below.

Streaming has forever changed the way we consume and experience movies and TV. One of the small joys (and anxieties) that has all but disappeared in the streaming era is channel surfing — the joy of discovering something new by chance, and also the pressure of not knowing when you might watch a certain title again.
Except, the essence of channel surfing is still there, in the way streaming platforms remove and add titles every month. The pressure of only having a certain amount of time before a title disappears forever is still there, only you have a month's notice. With October almost over, it is time for another round of movies and shows Netflix is taking off the platform and replacing with new ones. Like with everything streaming-related, there are a lot of soon-to-be-gone shows and movies. So I'm here to help break down the titles you do not want...

Film fans talk about the 1990s as another Golden Age of cinema. Not only is there the jam-packed year of 1999, which gave us classics such as The Matrix, Toy Story 2, and The Talented Mr. Ripley, but the 90s also saw the rise of new auteurs, including Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher, and Guillermo del Toro. Hollywood turned its attention to indie and foreign films, enriching a moviegoing experience that still featured fan-favorite blockbusters.
But to really see how good the 90s were, we can’t just look at the hits. Rather, the flops tell us the true tale of the decade’s quality – the movies that audiences skipped at the time but have proven their worth in the years that followed. Here are the best flops of the 1990s; films that couldn’t find a wide enough audience upon release, but still deserve attention today.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the sequel to Aardman Animation’s 2000 stop-motion hit, is arriving 23 years after the original. Mused director Sam Fell during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders London, “At the end of the first one, you’re kind of a bit sick of chickens. It takes about three or four years to make these things so I think everyone wanted to do new things.”
At the time, he also remarked, “Animated sequels weren’t a big thing back then, Toy Story 2 was probably the first great animated sequel.”
A follow-up had been “in the background” and there were “brainstorming sessions,” but the original Chicken Run “is so brilliant, you can’t do something less than that,” Fell said.
Fast-forward to 2016 and Fell ran into the previous film’s co-director Peter Lord who told him, “We’ve got it, we figured it out.” The trick was a single line: “This time,...

Since the Writers Guild of American and Screen Actors Guild are both still on strike, this year's Destination D23 convention down in Orlando, Florida didn't really have much of anything to showcase. Disney just announced the release of the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, featuring 100 animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. It’s packaged together as a three-volume set that unfolds into your own storybook.
The set is festooned with original poster designs and comes with digital codes for every movie, alongside a lithograph from Disney’s upcoming feature “Wish,” a certificate of authenticity and crystal Mickey Mouse ears engraved with the “Disney 100” logo. The limited-edition collection will be available on Nov. 14, with pre-orders beginning on Walmart.com on Sept. 18. It has a retail price of $1,500.
What’s fascinating about the set is that it includes a wide array of classic Walt Disney Animation Studios features, along with beloved Pixar favorites and a smattering of films (many of them direct-to-video sequels to earlier masterworks) created by the since-shuttered DisneyToon Studios. That includes “Tinker Bell,” “Return to Neverland,” “The...

Barbie takes a ride from her dream house to reality as Little Women writer-director Greta Gerwig takes another cultural icon and lovingly subverts it
Writer-director Greta Gerwig’s cinematic reinvention of Mattel’s most (in)famous toy comes on like a sugar-rush mashup of Pixar’s Toy Story 2, Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, the cult live-action feature Josie and the Pussycats and the Roger Ebert-scripted exploitation romp Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. It’s a riotously entertaining candy-coloured feminist fable that manages simultaneously to celebrate, satirise and deconstruct its happy-plastic subject. Audiences will be delighted. Mattel should be ecstatic.
After a heavily trailered 2001-parody opening, we move to a pastel pink haven in which, “thanks to Barbie, all problems of feminism and equal rights have been solved”. This is Barbieland – a fantasy world in which big-haired dolls can be anything, thereby inspiring equivalent feminine achievement out there in...

Believe it or not, there used to be a time where movie sequels were actually an incredibly rare thing. As it was, audiences felt that movies and even tv shows should have definitive stories and points that they were trying to make and why would anybody bother making a sequel to what should have been a conclusive story? But now, in an era where Hollywood values established IP and fanbases more than any potential original project, sequels have become the norm.
It isn’t necessarily a bad thing that sequels have taken over cinemas, provided that the sequels are just as good as the originals and come out with their own original plot-lines. Like all movies, whether or not a person might enjoy a surplus of sequels is preferential and is more so dependent on the subject material, especially if it’s regarding a franchise that the audience has taken a liking too.

The recent Disney layoffs that shed 7,000 employees company-wide included 75 positions at Pixar, marking the animation studio’s largest jobs cut since 2013.
The restructuring plan originally announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger in February to consolidate the company’s film and television divisions and save $5.5 billion in costs was executed on May 23rd. According to Reuters, Lightyear director Angus MacLane and long-time producer Galyn Susman — who was credited with rescuing 1999’s Toy Story 2 after nearly every file of the film was accidentally deleted during production — were among those eliminated from the animator’s 1,200-member staff.
The decision follows the troubled release of 2022’s Toy Story spin-off film Lightyear, which barely broke its $200 million budget with a worldwide gross of $226.7 million, along with less-than-stellar reviews and at least one case of existential crisis. Similarly, Disney’s last round of Pixar layoffs was initiated in 2013 following the delayed production and creative overhaul of 2015’s The Good Dinosaur.

Most of the nation’s critics loved the film, including Moira MacDonald in Seattle Times, who said it’s “enchanting; written with an effortless blend of sweetness and silliness, and animated with such rainbow-hued beauty, you may find yourself wanting to freeze-frame it.” And Lou Lemenick in New York Post called it “a dazzling, computer-animated fish tale with a funny, touching script...

Tom Hanks’ role as Woody in the popular Toy Story series is one of his most memorable characters. But his contributions towards the franchise go beyond just lending his voice.
If it wasn’t for Hanks, the rest of Toy Story might have been straight-to-dvd status.

Hanks had a good feeling about the concept of Toy Story when he was first presented with the idea. The movie would be animated by Pixar, a studio which has delivered several highly praised animated blockbusters since its inception. But at the time, Hanks had never seen or heard anything like what Pixar was attempting to do with Toy Story. And that was what attracted him to the film even more.
“There were two things about it. One: it was like, ‘I’m not sure what this is,'” he told BBC Radio 1.

When Lee Unkrich was 12, he saw “The Shining” for the first time. He remembers less from the screening than what happened shortly afterward, which set in motion a lifelong obsession with Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece of horror.
On his way to summer camp, Unkrich bought the movie tie-in edition of Stephen King’s novel. “There were photos of Wendy cooking breakfast in the kitchen,” he tells Variety. “I realized that wasn’t a scene that was in the movie. And that got a bug in my head — I wanted to know more about that world.”
For Unkrich, a 25-year Pixar veteran, that deleted scene would beget decades of collecting Kubrick ephemera, a stream of Easter eggs in his work from “Toy Story 2” to “Coco,” a website cataloguing his findings, and now, “Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining,” a 12-years-in-the-making, 2,200-page account of the creation of Kubrick’s film that Taschen...

This year, Docter will be honored with the Winsor McKay Award at this year’s Annies, presented by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, Asifa-Hollywood. Busted’s Charlie Simpson has been crowned the winner of The Masked Singer.

Simpson performed three times across Saturday’s finale show and beat Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson, who was disguised as Phoenix, and All Saints star Natalie Appleton, who was hiding behind the Fawn mask.
The Busted star admitted he did not expect to win the show and just tried to “remember the lyrics and have fun”.

Toy Story 4 grossed a cool 1 billion during the summer of 2019. This was achieved after a nearly decade-long hiatus following the previous film in the Buzz and Woody franchise, Toy Story 3 (2010), which also earned 1 billion. The lack of box office fall-off between installments was remarkable. So this week’s news from rechristened Disney CEO Bob Iger wasn’t exactly a shock: Toy Story 5 is on the way. Apparently with both Tom Hanks’ Woody and Tim Allen’s Buzz Lightyear, if Allen’s social media posts are anything to go by. Still…

This story about “Lightyear” first appeared in the Awards Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Pixar’s “Lightyear” is built around a nimble, ingenious premise: Instead of just another entry in the “Toy Story” franchise, it is the movie that young Andy watched and became obsessed with the Buzz Lightyear character (here played by Chris Evans) before the events of the first “Toy Story” film. As envisioned by co-writer/director Angus MacLane, “Lightyear” is a muscular science fiction movie (MacLane’s professed favorite is “Aliens”) that also must exist within the preexisting framework of the “Toy Story” franchise and the cumbersome mythology that has already been established. One of the more delicious thrills of “Lightyear” is watching it bump up against the mythos and gleefully subvert the audience’s preconceived notions.
And nowhere is this push-and-pull greater than when Buzz comes face-to-face with Zurg, the movie’s big villain.

Another hot-mic moment has Billy Bush under scrutiny, but it seems the leaked audio won’t cost the TV host a job this time. On Friday, January 6, The Daily Beast published audio of Bush making a sexualized joke about Kendall Jenner on the set of Extra on October 31, 2022. As he looked at a photo of Jenner dressed up as Jessie from Toy Story 2, Bush made a wisecrack referencing the Toy Story character Woody. “Kendall goes as Jessie and, believe me, there were a lot of woodies,” Bush said in the audio, with production staffers laughing in response. In the segment that made it to air, however, Bush gave a toned-down comment on Jenner’s Jessie get-up, saying that it would “be hard to see Toy Story ever the same way.” But the Extra team is supporting Bush, who has hosted the syndicated newsmagazine since 2019. “As with many forms of production in the entertainment industry,...

Prior to this year, only 11 sequels had ever been nominated for either of the Golden Globe Awards for Best Film (Drama or Comedy/Musical). Over half of them were added to the list after the turn of the century, and three have joined the group within the last decade. This year, an unprecedented total of three continuation films are competing for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s top honors. If “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” succeeds on its comedic bid or the drama prize goes to “Avatar: The Way of Water” or “Top Gun: Maverick,” the number of Best Film Golden Globe-winning sequels will rise to four.

2022 was a landmark year for horror media across the board. From theater screens to home consoles, we’ve been blessed with plenty of quality content during these past 12 months. However, with tentpole releases piling up as gamers struggle with their ever-expanding backlogs, we thought that this would be the perfect time to organize the major releases of the year in a single comprehensive list so that readers can sort out their horror gaming priorities.
That’s why we’ve decided to rank the 10 best major horror games of 2022, as even the most devoted of horror hounds might need a little help keeping up with the bountiful harvest of scary media from this past year. And while this is a ranked list, I’d argue that every single title here deserves a playthrough – so remember that even our last placed entry is still worth checking out!
As usual, we’ll be following a couple of rules.

At the 67th Golden Globe Awards in 2010, James Cameron’s “Avatar” triumphed on two of its four nominations, in the categories of Best Drama and Best Director. At the time, the groundbreaking sci-fi epic was one week away from becoming the highest-grossing film of all time and, in Cameron’s mind, was just the start of an expansive series. Now that its first sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” is finally complete, there are new box office and awards records on the horizon. For instance, the “Avatar” franchise could be the first to ever achieve two top Golden Globe wins.
Gold Derby’s current Golden Globes predictions show “Avatar: The Way of Water” being this year’s seventh likeliest Best Drama Film contender, with Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” being the solid frontrunner. Cameron’s history with this category dates back to 1998, when his “Titanic” won this and three other awards,...

Disney Animation has not had a good year. The studio has followed disappointing box office for last summer’s “Toy Story” spinoff “Lightyear” with the big-screen bomb “Strange World” that is projected by analysts to cost the studio 100 million-plus as one of Disney’s biggest failures ever.
The flop is so big that it is on par with another historic bomb that the studio released on Thanksgiving weekend two decades ago: “Treasure Planet,” the most prominent in a string of theatrical busts that helped lead to the ouster of then-ceo Michael Eisner and paved the way for the rise of Bob Iger, who is now returning to take charge of Disney after the brief, tumultuous reign of Bob Chapek. Unlike Eisner and “Treasure Planet,” “Strange World” doesn’t entirely fall on Chapek’s shoulders. (The new film had been in development under Disney Animation head Jennifer Lee prior to Chapek’s rise as CEO.

When Pixar's "Toy Story" first hit theaters in 1995, it was pure magic. Making close to 30 million during its opening weekend, the film went on to inspire a full-on franchise with "Toy Story 2" coming out four years later. Today, there are three true sequels to the original film, as well as the recently released spin-off, "Lightyear," that serves as the actual movie that the Buzz Lightyear toy is supposed to be based on. (Think of it as the Buzz version of "Woody's Roundup" if "Woody's Roundup" had gotten its own actual movie.)
With so many sequels to its name, "Toy Story" has become a Disney and Pixar creation that is truly beloved by people of all ages, and while each one of the sequels has its merits, the second installment in the series really sets the bar high as far as follow-ups are concerned.

With Halloween in the rearview mirror, the theatrical box office looks ahead to the normally profitable holiday season that includes Thanksgiving at the end of this month. We’re also continuing the rollout of a number of prestige films that will be in the awards conversation for the next few months, including the latest from a guy named “Spielberg.” Read on for Gold Derby’s November 2022 box office preview.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Marvel/Disney) – Nov. 11
What is likely to be the biggest movie of the month and maybe even the year is director Ryan Coogler’s return to the Marvel Universe and the world of Wakanda he helped visualize for 2018’s “Black Panther” movie, which grossed 700 million in North America alone. Of course, the big tragedy surrounding the sequel is that Chadwick Boseman died of colon cancer in 2020, leaving Marvel and Coogler having to figure out how to make a sequel without him,...
