Universal’s “Dark Universe” may have gone up in flames right out of the gate, but that’s not stopping other studios from (unofficially) making their own Universal Monsters mashups.
All the classic monsters unite to brawl in The Asylum’s Monster Mash, which is coming to select theaters as well as VOD outlets at home on the same day, Friday, March 29, 2024.
Who brings them all together, you ask? Michael Madsen, of course!
In Monster Mash, “A dying Dr. Frankenstein is determined to meld the world’s strongest monsters into a singular, unstoppable creation. Now the monsters—including Dracula, Werewolf, and the Invisible Man—must work together to stop him before it’s too late.”
The film will be opening theatrically in the following locations:
Laemmle – Glendale, California Hickory Ridge Cinemas – Brunswick, Ohio Trylon Cinema – Minneapolis, Minnesota O Cinema – South Beach, Miami, Florida Aurora Cineplex – Roswell, Georgia

As Easter Sunday approaches this weekend, we thought we’d “die” your eggs a little a differently. That is, we’re on the great hidden treasure hunt for some of the most colorful and delicious horror movie Easter eggs found in some of our favorite titles. But here’s the thing. We aren’t talking about obscure cameos from people that are hard to miss, or even secretive foreshadowing within a single movie, a la the entire Final Destination franchise. Nor are we talking about mere verbal references to other horror movies. Rather, we’re interested in visual crossover clues found one horror movie that pay homage to another, found tucked away in the background or even hidden in plain sight. You see the distinction. Good. Hopefully you haven’t already seen what’s to follow. Happy holiday y’all, here’s our Top 10 Favorite Crossover Horror Movie Easter Eggs!

Not too long ago, IMDb introduced a new feature to their website called the Parents Guide. The goal was to give parents a quick rundown of risqué, violent or suggestive scenes from films, and allow them to make quick decisions as to whether or not they should allow their child to watch said movies. Parents who felt aghast that Spielberg would show a scene where a father was unable to reach his child’s outstretched hand, as in the 1991 classic Hook, might choose to skip ahead, while other parents who are appalled by children debating whether or not Wolfman has “nards”, could forgo all of Shane Black and Fred Dekker’s 1987 monster mashup Monster Squad. However, should one day their children ask them if they can sit down and watch a screening of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil’s new film Krazy House, the Finnigan’s Wake length...

Have you ever had a vacation so iconic that people are still talking about it over two centuries later? Mary Shelley sure did, with her infamous getaway alongside Percy Shelley, John Polidori, Claire Clairmont and their host Lord Byron resulting in some of the most influential genre fiction of all time. And while Byron’s Darkness and Polidori’s The Vampyre have their merits, it’s pretty clear that Frankenstein remains the most enduring product of that fateful literary holiday.
That’s why it’s no surprise that we’re still seeing fresh adaptations of The Modern Prometheus well into 2023, with Yorgo Lanthimos’ Frankenstein inspired Poor Things proving that there are still new ways of exploring the tragic horror of Shelley’s immortal yarn. And with so many great adaptations to choose from, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the best modern Frankenstein retellings for your viewing pleasure.

Bloody Disgusting is going to satisfy your nostalgia sweet tooth with the brand new Screambox Original Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, which gives loving homage to classic gateway horror like Monster Squad, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Ernest Scared Stupid, and Beetlejuice.
First reported by Variety, Cinedigm announced today they have acquired all North American rights to the buzzed-about horror-comedy Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2023 Midnight Section to rave reviews.
Our very own Meagan Navarro attended the World Premiere, writing in her review that Onyx is an “endearing comedy-horror [that] embraces the ‘80s horror kid,” while RogerEbert.com called the film “a handmade horror gem.”
Based on writer, director and star Andrew Bowser’s viral internet character of the same name, Onyx tells the story of an amateur occultist who learns that sometimes when you raise Hell…you get a little burned.

With all the sequels, reboots, and “requels” we been getting lately come perhaps the most prolific follow-up of all: prequels. Lately, we’ve been seeing A Lot of those – to variable degrees of success. Orphan: First Kill is a lot of fun, but it has issues. The Cabin Fever prequel from years ago is better left in the past, and the Leatherface prequel is still splitting fans in the love it and hate it camps. However, the Predator prequel Prey is getting rave reviews and most fans seem to love it. These are just a few and we have much more coming soon including Furiosa, a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, and Pearl, a prequel for X that was shot back-to-back with its original. With these two and a few more coming up that look really good, what are the horror prequels we want to see?

Fred Dekker, the writer and director of the 1986 horror film Night of the Creeps, is planning a sequel that will bring back the original cast! That cast of the original film includes Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, Allan Kayser, and Tom Atkins.
The news about Night of the Creeps 2 came from Tom Atkins during an interview with JoBlo. He said:
“I would like to see Detective Ray Cameron become resurrected somehow. And Fred Dekker and I, every time we see each other, we talk about that. And he's determined to do a sequel with the three kids and myself. I mean they're no longer kids, they're all in their 50's, but they're all still kicking and healthy and looking good. I would love to do that again. I love Detective Ray Cameron.”
It would be pretty cool if this film project actually ended up happening. I love the idea...

It seems safe to say that if one mentioned this movie to the kids of today they’d look at you funny and wonder if this was a new cartoon they hadn’t heard about. Those of us that remember though can recall the Monster Squad when it came out and why it was so great. Unfortunately for those of us that might have liked the movie, Germain Lussier of SlashFilm and many others have reported the idea is Doa. That might be why it’s a good and a bad thing that we won’t be seeing any more of it, since quite

Rebooting or adapting 1980s television and movies is hot business right now, from Child’s Play to the troubled Lost Boys series, as well as a new prequel for Gremlins. One property that didn’t get the green light though is The Monster Squad, as it’s been revealed that a planned TV adaptation of the 1987 movie couldn’t get off the ground at Paramount. According to original director Fred Dekker, the studio were interested in reviving the much-loved film, but development was limited.
Dekker spoke to Moviefone about why The Monster Squad series didn’t happen, commenting as so:
“I’ll be completely honest, Shane Black and I have both been approached about adapting The Monster Squad for television. Was it my first choice? No. But I’m a big fan now of long form television. And figuring out a way to take Monster Squad and turn it into...

When Stranger Things became a hit, producers wanted to tap into that 80s nostalgia that has become very popular today in the Radcore movement. Turns out, one property that producers were interested in adapting as a TV series was the classic 80s hit The Monster Squad!
The film’s director Fred Dekker recently revealed that in an interview with Moviefone, he was approached to bring Monster Squad to the small screen. The is certainly something that I would have been interested in seeing! I love the concept of a group of kids coming together to face off with a team of legendary monsters. It had such a cool and perfect blend of comedy and horror.
While it would have been pretty rad to see the franchise revived, Dekker ended up turning down the opportunity. He explained:
"I'll be completely honest, Shane Black and I have both been approached about adapting The Monster Squad for television.

One of my favorite horror movies to watch when I was growing up was a 1985 film called House. Outside of my family, I don’t know a lot of people that are familiar with this movie, so I thought I’d bring it to your attention just in case. If you have seen the movie… congratulations! You win! And now you can go watch it again.
The movie was written by Fred Dekker (Monster Squad) and Ethan Wiley and it was directed by Steve Miner. House also had a great cast that included William Katt (Greatest American Hero), George Wendt (Cheers) and Richard Moll (Night Court).
The story follows a character named Roger Cobb, a Vietnam vet with a career as a horror novelist, whose son Jimmy mysteriously disappears while visiting his aunt's house. As Roger doesn’t give up looking for Jimmy his marriage comes to an end and...

In 1988, after working for the legendary Stan Winston, two of the most talented practical effects artists in the business started their own shop, Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (Adi). Since then, Tom Woodruff, Jr. and Alec Gillis have helped bring iconic creations to life in the innovative realms of horror and sci-fi cinema. To celebrate 30 years of "make-up, monsters, and magic," the amazing creations from Adi will be featured at a new exhibit at The Hollywood Museum.
Kicking off on October 3rd and running through the rest of 2018, the Adi 30-year retrospective exhibit will feature a display room brimming with practical effects from the company's past three decades. Over the years, Woodruff, Jr., Gillis, and their talented team of artists have worked on some of the most memorable movies in cinema, including Tremors, Alien 3, Starship Troopers, The X-Files, Hollow Man, Spider-Man 2, Godzilla (2014), and It (2017). I'm not the biggest fan of director Eli Roth. Cabin Fever was a decent film but I haven't really cared for anything else that he's done, especially the Hostel films. The guy is mostly known for his style of hardcore horror and torture porn, so it was shocking to see that he was going to be directing a family horror movie for Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment called The House With a Clock In Its Walls. I was even more shocked by the fact that I actually enjoyed the movie!
Look, The House With a Clock In Its Walls was far from perfect, and there were certain aspects that bugged me about it, but for the most part, it was an enjoyable movie! I'd even go as far to say that it's my favorite Eli Roth film and probably one of the better movies he's made. Remember, this is coming...

Stars: Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Sterling K. Brown, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, Yvonne Strahovski | Written by Shane Black, Fred Dekker | Directed by Shane Black
Co-written and directed by Shane Black (who co-starred in the original 1987 movie), this sci-fi action thriller is either the fourth Predator movie or the sixth, depending on whether or not you count the two Alien Vs Predator films. In keeping with Black’s proclivities as a writer-director, The Predator plays like a shameless throwback to the 1980s, though the results are somewhat mixed.
Narcos’ Boyd Holbrook stars as U.S. mercenary Quinn McKenna, who first encounters the Predator when it crash-lands in the Mexican jungle and promptly slaughters his entire unit. Escaping with his life, McKenna manages to mail a load of alien tech back home before getting picked up and debriefed by a sinister government...

Forget Predator 2. Forget all that Alien Vs Predator nonsense and forget that dud with Adrian Brody a few years back– The Predator is the sequel that the beloved Arnold-powered ’80s actioner deserves. It’s been over thirty years since director John McTiernan delivered the original, and while I wouldn’t exactly say The Predator was worth the wait, it is far more enjoyable and well-made than the aforementioned sequels. Don’t go into this new update expecting much more than your average bloody, fire-powered action film and you’ll find it worth your while.
Boyd Holbrook stars in The Predator as Quinn McKenna, a specials ops sniper and the only survivor of a Mexico-set prologue where his platoon is ambushed by one of the dreadlocked title beasts. Some time later (a sense of time is not one of this film’s strong points) Quinn and his autistic son Rory...

The excitement level for The Predator seems to have died down since those first initial reviews for the film hit the Internet. Those certainly didn't do the film any favors. Regardless, I'm personally still looking forward to seeing the movie. My expectations may have been lowered a bit but that doesn't mean I'm not going to enjoy it! I still think the film looks like it's going to be a blast!
We've got a fun new promo video for you to watch today, though! This one puts the focus on The Ultimate Predator and it points out what it is that makes it so ultimately badass. I do like the idea behind the Ultimate Predator and how it was created from the collected DNA of the universe's most badass species.
Watch the video and tell us what you think. I also included some official anime-style art that was done to help promote the movie.

The first initial reviews for Shane Black's The Predator haven't sparked a lot of confidence, but I'm still looking forward to watching the movie because in the end it still might be a fun and enjoyable movie.
The first clip for the film has been released and it features the Ultimate Predator and the regular Predator facing off with each other. As you might imagine, the Ultimate Predator kicks its ass. Check it out:
From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

We've got a great new extended TV spot for The Predator for you to enjoy today as it treats us to some exciting bloody action as the alien hunter goes ballistic hunting down its human prey and brutally destroying them. We don't have to wait much longer for the movie to be released!
The movie stars Boyd Holbrook (Narcos, Logan), Thomas Jane (The Punisher), Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse), Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight...

This latest promo spot and poster for director Shane Black's The Predator comes to us from IMAX. They obviously want you to see this movie in the best way possible and IMAX has set the standard for the best movie-going experience. I'm just excited about finally being able to watch The Predator! It seems like it's been forever since I got a first look at the film at CinemaCon. Not a lot of people cared for that first trailer that was released, but over time a lot of fans have warmed up to the film. Now, hopefully, it delivers something completely awesome! We'll find out in less than two weeks!
