SWAN LAKE Was Nothing Like This

Painlevé returns his cameras to the sea thirty years after his first documentary, to take a look at star fish in this typical professorial short on these underseas creatures.

His photography is just as brilliant as ever, and in this one he and his co-director,Geneviève Hamon use the usual array of microphotography, high-speed cameras and now tinted lenses to bring their subjects into clearer focus. Despite their weird appearances and counter-intuitive life cycles (the feather stars seem to be unusual in that they go from a fixed, sessile phase of life to a mobile one), the film makers make evident the grace and beauty of these animals.

This is one of the few movies in which Painlevé's sense of humorous not just black, but determinedly mawkish, as if he is trying to be funny in a shocking manner, but fails. Well, not all jokes work.

Warning: Spoilers
"Les danseuses de mer" or "Sea Ballerinas" is a 1960 13-minite documentary short film by Jean Painlevé. Even if over 55 years old now, this one was among the Frenchman's later works already and you see it by the use of color which did not occur yet in his works from the previous decades. It is about starfish from start to finish and basically all about the procreation. This is an animal group I am not too interested in, which is why I did not enjoy this little documentary too much. It is just personal preference, so if you find this peculiar group of animals more interesting than I do, you will probably also have a better time. Still it is not a film I would recommend people who plan on getting to know Painlevé's work. Apart from that, the ending was the weirdest thing ever. Lots of science fiction there.
