This beautifully filmed Australian silent film is a tribute to the famous Australian writer Adam Lindsay Gordon, who, frustrated at his inability to have his work published, took his own life. After his death his work was published to great acclaim.
Not all of this film still exists, but the surviving 37 minutes reveal a film of great beauty and subtlety. Thankfully the final scenes exist, so that we can still see the magnificently lit scene where Gordon sits by his fireside contemplating his end, and the extraordinary long shot of the despairng Gordon passing a fisherman on a lonely beach in the early morning. A hauntingly beautiful shot.
The film ends with real footage of crowds gathering at a tribute to Gordon by his graveside, filmed the day before the film was released!
Overall this is a beautiful film - very advanced in lighting and cinematography for 1916.
