18 years after making his directorial debut, Troy Duffy only has two movies under his belt, and they’re both Boondock Saints movies. In the eight years since the last sequel, Boondock Saints: All Saints Day, he’s worked on a few projects, including another Saints sequel and a TV series based on his cult ’90s movie. His next project, though, has […]

“The Boondocks Saints” franchise is still alive and coming to your TV.
Troy Duffy’s 1999 film starred Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus as Irish American twin brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus, who took it upon themselves to take on the evil Russian mobsters in Boston. Despite critical panning and only getting an initial release in five theaters for one week due to the Columbine High School massacre, the film gained a cult following from its international release and DVD sales. In 2009, Duffy released a sequel, “The Boondocks Saints II: All Saints Day.”
While details about the plot are under wraps for “The Boondocks Saints: Origins” TV series, Don Carmody Television (Dctv) launched its fan-focused pre-order campaign that is seeking donations at BoondocksBack.com. While fans can donate any amount, the campaign has also created merchandise incentives in three increasing tiers. All three tiers will receive a box of “The...

Paper Girls #2
Written by Brian K. Vaughan
Art and Cover by Cliff Chiang
Colors by Matt Wilson
Letters and Design by Jared K. Fletcher
Published by Image Comics on November 4, 2015
Paper Girls #2 picks up immediately after the close of issue #1. One of our mummy-ninja mystery men is making a mad dash with his bag of stolen devices. The issue then goes on to offer deepening characters and relationships, developing themes, and more than a few surprises. Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang maintain the excitement, intrigue, and childhood nostalgia established in the opening issue while giving their readers much more to munch on.
The issue’s opening page gives text in the mystery men’s language. Decoded it reads: Nostalgia Is Death. The language is a simple substitution cipher. For a decoder key, click here. This appears to be the title of the issue and certainly captures both plot and theme of the narrative.

City of the Living Dead (1980) is not where my relationship starts with Italian director Lucio Fulci. Also known as The Gates of Hell (a way better title, and what I saw it as), Cotld was not released in North America until 1983. By this time, my eyeballs had already been assaulted by Zombie (1979), and The Beyond (1981). This film was made in between, and it shows – it’s a fascinating fulcrum between the flesh eating exploits of the former and the surreal dreamscapes of the latter. It’s a creepy classic from one of the Italian masters of the genre.
Released in 1980 in his native Italy, Cotld was released in the U.S. by North America Marketing in May of ’83. Derided by critics at the time, it’s never up for re-evaluation by the mainstream. And that’s okay. What fellow horror fiends have known for decades is that Fulci at his...

He plays a contract killer for the CIA who enlists the help of an old-school friend (Kevin Hart) to "foil a plan to sell military secrets." There are surprise franchises and surprise franchises, and then there's The Boondock Saints. The 1999 vigilante action comedy that nobody initially saw became a cult hit on video. Then there was a straight-to-dvd sequel in 2009, and now Boondocks mastermind Troy Duffy is taking his franchise to TV. He's prepping a prequel series for Im Global TV, and will also direct the pilot. The original film saw Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery as Irish-American brothers taking on the Russian mob. Willem Dafoe played a weird FBI agent, and Billy Connolly was the berserk Il Duce: an assassin with a coat full of arsenal. Reedus, Flanery and Connolly all returned for the Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, and were joined by Peter Fonda.Reedus and Flanery are both in talks to be executive producers on the TV iteration, although it's unclear at this point if they'll also appear. “For years I...

I used to work at a store where some of us employees liked to dress up for Halloween. One year the young woman I worked with that day dressed in her full Goth regalia (this is someone with a spiderweb tattoo), and when one customer said to her, "I love your costume," she replied, coldly and seriously, "It's not a costume." Ever since then I have thought of Halloween as the one day each year when Goths "fit in."

The other night, My Mary and I were looking for something to watch on the tube. She had recorded Fly Away Home, the 1996 film by Carroll Ballard, starring Jeff Daniels, Dana Delaney, Anna Pacquin and Terry Kinney. We’ve watched it many times and I think we even own a copy of it. It’s wonderfully acted and beautifully shot; if you ever watch it, try to see it in wide screen. Some of the shots of Canadian Geese flying are breathtaking.
One of the things that struck me (again) was Mark Isham’s soundtrack and the haunting song that opens and closes the film, 10,000 Miles, sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter. Just as the growing season was beginning word arrived from the bishop that the pope had moved All Saints Day to November 1st tomorrow. In 1999, after an infamously turbulent development process that saw its script get snapped up and then cruelly jettisoned by Miramax, “The Boondock Saints,” a revenge flick about two avenging-angel Irish Catholic twins, Connor and Murphy McManus (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus), who cut a swath of retribution through Boston’s criminal underworld, came and went in theaters in barely the blink of an eye. On the nascent digital home video format, however, it became a huge if unlikely hit. A decade later, its writer-director, Troy Duffy, got a chance to make a sequel, “Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day,” that continued the McManus brothers’ story. This week, an exclusive [ Read More ]

Sometimes it seems like there's only two types of people in the world: those that really like The Boondock Saints and its sequel, and those that don't. But I fall a bit in the middle. The first one I thought was entertaining, but I didn't think it was nearly as amazing as many loyal fans made it out to be. As for the sequel...well I've seen it once and that's probably enough for me. The director's cut of The Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day...

If you want to bring down a crime ring, you have to start thinking like a criminal. Any good movie cop knows that, and Willem Dafoe’s Bud Carter is no exception.
In Bad Country, Bud Carter teams up with Matt Dillon’s Jesse Weiland, an incarcerated man with Aryan Brotherhood affiliations, to try to uncover a larger, more sinister organization plaguing the Bayou environs. “He’s the ticket to something big,” Bud tells his fellow cops. Bud needs Jesse, and Jesse just wants to get back to his wife (played by Amy Smart) and his kid, so he becomes...

If there’s any proof that fate has a sense of humor, it’ll come when Boondock Saints 3 starts rolling its cameras. The first film was a sleeper hit that was so perfect in its ridiculousness and bloodshed that it was impossible for it not to earn a dedicated audience. When a sequel didn’t come, but a lawsuit against Franchise Pictures did, director Troy Duffy became something of a legend. His low budget feature had scored big with video sales, but Duffy was also used as an example of what not to do when finding Hollywood success in the documentary Overnight where he acts like a complete jackwagon to his close friends and business associates. The noise calling for a sequel was deafening, but Duffy was unable to make it happen until ten years later. Unfortunately, Boondock 2: All Saints Day was the terrible kind of ridiculous, and it alienated all but the most hardcore of...

RoboCop: The new version of RoboCop began filming in Toronto over the weekend, and the first photos of Joel Kinnaman in the newly designed robotic law enforcer suit sparked a flood of reactions -- mostly negative -- on various social media platforms. To be fair, movie costumes in real life rarely resemble their final appearance on-screen, but the remake seems to be fighting an unfortunate uphill battle when it comes to redesigning an iconic outfit. All Saints Day = Total Fail
Boondock Saints to this day is still one of my favorite poorly reviewed, under the radar films ever. The cult success of this action flick was epic, and led to a highly-anticipated big screen sequel (Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day) a decade later. And despite everyone, minus Willem Dafoe back for a sequel, it made no noise at the box-office and was woefully bad. Apparently the Saints crew is still feeding off the good vibrations from the first film, because they're reportedly all in for a third installment.

Some of you out there are fans of Troy Duffy‘s The Boondock Saints. Don’t worry, we’re not naming names here. But if you fall into that group you’ll be happy to hear a third film just may be heading your way in the near future. The first one didn’t blow up right away, but it eventually found itself a pretty healthy cult following. (And it even found a spot in our list of the 14 Most Mundane Movie Murder Weapons, so that’s something at least.) The movie follows the blood-spattered, bullet-strewn, revenge-fueled adventures of fraternal twins Connor and Murphy MacManus (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus). It’s not a great movie, but it has its charms thanks mostly to the two leads and the support of Willem Dafoe in a fairly goofy role as the detective on their trail. It was followed a decade later by the even less kindly received...

Can’t get enough of the MacManus brothers and dying to see a third installment? Well, you’re probably going to have to wait a little while longer. Although it opened to middling box office ($10 million from an $8 million production budget), “Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day” has gone on to clear $23 million from DVD and Blu-ray sales alone. Just like the original, audiences just seem to love this franchise more when they can watch it at home — preferably in the comforts of their living room with a six-pack and some buddies to goof around with. With that kind of success, you just know a “Boondock Saints 3″ is around the corner — in some form or fashion. According to writer/director Troy Duffy, a part three in theaters may not happen anytime soon … since he’s eyeing a TV series instead. Speaking to We Got This Covered while out promoting the...

2011 is the year of the sequel. Like most years, it seems. But this year, it really is. There will be 27 sequels released this year, topping the record of 24 sequels set in 2003. And why not? Back in the day (and by the day, I mean: The 90s), I remember hearing something along the lines of, "If the sequel does 70 percent of what the original made, then it's considered a success." Now? The sequel needs to make more money than the original, and that's very often the case. There tends to be a drop-off after the second film, but it's not atypical now for the second film to improve upon the first film's box office gross.
And that's why there are 27 sequels this year.
But historically, which movie franchises fared better their second time out? Here's a list of the ten movies with the biggest box-office improvement.

['Treme' Season 2 Premiere: 'Accentuate the Positive']
The second season of 'Treme' opens on All Saints Day, set to the somber sound of a struggling trumpet being played by a lonely kid trying to teach himself to play. It's fourteen months after Hurricane Katrina, and the show's characters are all at different stages of piecing their lives back together. Some have left New Orleans, chasing opportunity in other cities or chased out by broken roofs, but most are hanging in there, trying to make things work in their struggling hometown.
The direction David Simon may be trying to take the show's second season emerges early on. Sonny's getting a drink at a strip-club when two gunmen walk in and start firing, hitting five people and killing one. It's a scene that could have happened at Avon Barksdale's Orlando's in Baltimore, and offers a clue about where 'Treme' is going: in the vacuum of progress,...

Trick or treating has long been a Halloween tradition, and the beauty of the yearly holiday in general is that it can be hilarious, spooky, and fun all at the same time. That's exactly what Paramount in banking on for its new upcoming look at All Saints Day, Fun Size.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Thomas Mann (It's Kind of a Funny Story) is close to signing onto the Paramount Halloween comedy being described as a cross between Superbad and Adventures in Babysitting that is set on Halloween.
The comedic script, by Colbert Report scribe Max Werner, centers on a sarcastic teenage girl (Justice) who is forced to take her little brother trick-or-treating on Halloween, then loses him and must find him before their mother finds out.
Mann will be a potential love interest for Justice, playing a naive teen with two lesbians as parents who named him after Eleanor Roosevelt.

Just in case the sharp snap in the air, the World Series or the trick-or-treaters didn't give it away, it should be noted that it is now officially November. That means that 2010 is almost over, and that everything in culture will be moving towards an endgame. Oscar-baiting movies will roll out by the truckload, high-profile artists will drop shopping soundtrack albums, big-time video games will try to take over the holiday market and television will (mostly) stay exactly the same. In the meantime, it's time to start planning for your holiday travel, working out your Christmas list and making reservations for New Year's Eve. Because before you know it, the year will be gone and we'll have to do all of this all over again.

Uso shows are a staple in entertaining and bringing smiles to the faces of our military's troops as they serve our country, and countless stars and celebrities have made their way to these shows over the years to do their best to keep spirits and morale as high as possible during tough times.

“I am little scattered brained right now,” says Clifton Collins Jr. in our phone conversation this afternoon. Over the past year Clif has become an awesome friend and supporter of Fusedfilm.com and when he asked me to talk with him about his upcoming projects, how could I say no?
Scatter brained is simply a comment on one of the hardest working actors who says that “variety is what I love.” There is no doubt he has variety in his career ranging from genre roles like a Romulan in Star Trek to a zany vigilante saint in Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.
Collins shows up in roles and parts you wouldn’t expect and though garnering critical raves in Capote, he doesn’t let that get to his head. “I just work. I love movies, I love what I do and my manager has such a great hold on...

At Comic-Con 2010, we got the chance to catch up with one of the coolest actors out there, Clifton Collins Jr. (Star Trek, Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, Southland), who was around to promote NBC's new drama, The Event. Collins spoke a little bit about why The Event is going to blow your mind and what we can expect to see of his character Thomas. Thomas will be a key player that's deeply involved in the conspiracy President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood) will attempt to unravel. Besides the new show, he also mused about his budding music-video directing career (he won a Cmt award for directing a Zac Brown band music video) and the possibility of directing videos for Slash, who just released his debut solo album this Spring. The Event, which had the world premiere of its pilot today at Comic-Con, will debut on NBC on September 20. [jambovideo id="229343" wide="yes" /]...

An image like the one you'll find after the jump could only have come from the halls of San Diego Comic-Con. Right? Today's Daily TwitPic features "Boondock Saints" star Sean Patrick Flanery in what appear to be his final moments. A pair of Spartan super-soldiers, from the "Halo" video game universe, have the actor held at gunpoint for reasons that aren't made clear. Maybe that had issues with "Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day"?
The MTV team on the ground in San Diego will be keeping an eye out for Flanery today as they continue our ongoing coverage of Comic-Con's biggest panels and most sought-after interviews. You'll of course be able to see some of it later today when the second of our three MTV/MySpace-sponsored livestreams gets underway at 3pm Et. There's still time to send along your questions; just tweet them to MTV Movies managing editor @JoshuaHorowitz. Hit...

The brothers McManus returned to deliver their own brand of righteousness in Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day and M&C is giving away a prop from the film - the shirt and tie that Concezio Yakavetta (Judd Nelson) wears in the action scene in his hideout at the Prudential Tower. M&C is also giving away a copy of the Boondock Saints comics .The Lost Gig. and .In Nomine Patris.. From Troy Duffy, writer and director of The Boondock Saints, comes the much anticipated sequel to the tough, stylized cutting edge saga of the MacManus brothers (Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery). The two have been in deep hiding with their father, Il Duce (Billy Connolly), in the quiet...

Independent film’s most recent cautionary tale, Apparition, may still have a life to live – they’ll just half to kill off about half their ship to keep on keeping on. Ever since the surprise exit of Bob Berney, co-founder of the independent distribution company, the other half of that equation, Bill Pohlad, has been reeling to get Apparition back on its feet. In order to do this, Pohlad has let go 15 Apparition employees, or 60 percent of his workforce. [Deadline]
Meanwhile, Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, hangs in the balance of Apparition’s survival. Still set set for a late 2010 release date, Pohlad has brought in ex-Lionsgate president Tom Ortenberg to make sure the company’s most high-profile acquisition gets into the right place to win awards come Oscar time next year.

Trick or treating has long been a Halloween tradition, and the beauty of the yearly holiday in general is that it can be hilarious, spooky, and fun all at the same time. And that's exactly what Paramount in banking on for its new upcoming look at All Saints Day, Fun Size.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Paramount has picked up Fun Size, a comedy spec from "The Colbert Report" writer Max Werner that is being described as a cross between Superbad and Adventures in Babysitting that is set on Halloween.
"I grew up on John Hughes films and miss those great character-based comedies that make you feel something. 'Fun Size' is about real characters who are smart, funny, and a little bit offbeat," says Werner of the project.
We don't know exactly how much horror will be making it in with the comedy just yet so this may be the...

You know who’s pretty good? That, rapper Drake. You ever hear his mix-tape “So Far Gone”? It’s pretty good. If you Google it or something you can download it for free. It’s a mix-tape, so it’s perfectly legal. I don’t think his studio album will be very good, but at least we’ll have the mix-tapes.

Director/producer/writer/actor Tyler Perry follows up 2007's couples' therapy-styled rampage, Why Did I Get Married? with a surprising minimum of misogyny and racism. And admittedly, there's a halfway decent lesson to be learned in this sequel, that is, if you live in a glass house (that necessarily contains a bunch of glass tables, shelves, and decor) and are married to a tightly-wound woman who sells millions of relationship self-help books yet cannot express her own emotions -- for the love of all that is even remotely decent -- do not keep a set of golf clubs on the premises. If you're looking for anything more profound than that mere bit of common-sense, then don't see this movie. All credit goes to Perry for his recognition of what his own audience wants and willingness to adhere to their desires. Still, a filmmaker must walk a fine line between wanting...

Chicago – The first “Boondock Saints” was so over-the-top that its abundance of style actually became substance. While I certainly don’t bow to the film like so many of its devoted fans, I totally get the obsession with it that led to a surprising sequel and even a comic book. The movie is fun. And that’s where the sequel fails. “Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” is bloated and boring, missing the spark that made the first a surprising cult hit.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
The relatively simple script for “Boondock Saints” was one of the main reasons it worked. The Tarantino-esque structure of a lawman (Willem Dafoe) retracing the steps of two vigilante killers largely through slow-motion flashback wasn’t perfect but it was fun and structurally clever.
Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day was released on Blu-ray and DVD on March 9th, 2010.

Troy Duffy has been promising for years that the Saints would again come marching in, but for a while it looked like Halley’s Comet would show up before a sequel. After a limited theatrical release last fall, “Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” hits wide distribution via the home video market, proving the boys are back in town-albeit in a film that focuses more on plot instead of stylized carnage. Worth the decade long wait, “Boondock Saints II” is as potent as Irish whiskey. The MacManus brothers have retired to a quiet valley in Ireland, living the simple life of farmers. But men like these can never indulge in simple lives for long, and a brutal murder of a beloved priest brings them back to Boston to mete out bloody justice. But this is not just a simple street killing, it’s part of an elegant plan devised by...

Not a particularly exciting week for new releases on DVD and Blu-ray, with the exception of a couple Academy Award-nominated films trying to capitalize on their Oscar exposure (Up in the Air and Precious). Other major releases include Michael Moore's most recent film Capitalism: A Love Story and Troy Duffy's Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, the Robin Williams/John Travolta comedy Old Dogs and the CG-animated Planet 51. Some other alternatives include a documentary from the producers of Moog called The Heart is a Drum Machine, the Sarah Michelle Gellar direct-to-dvd horror flick Possession, and the Richard Gere tearjerker Hachi: A Dog's Tale, about the iconic Japanese dog. Sean Patrick Flanery – When I told Heidi I’d set up an interview with him for Pretty/Scary, I think her heart might have stopped momentarily. Mine may have skipped a beat too. There’s a lot to love. He had that cute and creepy thing going for him in Powder. He was simply adorable (I mean, very manly) as Young Indiana Jones. He had the honor of getting ganked by Christopher Walken in Suicide Kings. He’s brought us some serious (and not-so serious) scares in Demon Hunter, The Masters of Horror’s The Damned Thing, Kaw, and The Insatiable, as well as episodes of Charmed, The Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone, and more recently, The Dead Zone. And he’s got some more sf/f and horror in the works: Deadly Impact hits DVD this April with Mongolian Death Worms and Scavengers slated for later in 2010. Plus,...
