A gentleman enters a hotel and tries to register. There's no one there, but the registry opens before him, his baggage whisks in front of him, and his room is all filled with items that work automatically. Well, almost.

Ten years earlier, a movie like this would have imps and demons doing somersaults, but Emile Cohl and Etienne Arnaud have advanced the tricks in Melies' THE HAUNTED INN into a series of mechanical marvels that work perfectly. Well, almost. In this manner does the new film grammar come into existence, when the bits and bobs of the old one are redefined and repurposed. Now it's not eerie, but funny.
