The Land of the Rising Sun
The Black Cat visits Japan, where he rouses the ire of the authorities by getting everyone sitting in chairs rather than on tatami mats in this fine late Felix cartoon.
Although the gags will probably be perceived as racist when it comes to the Japanese portion of the short, this one is up to the inventive standards of the series, with lots of bizarre yet logical transformation gags. In addition, whoever did the background work for the cels took a careful look at actual Japanese art and used a lot of effects, a bit simplified for the cartoon. Although the series was running out of time and becoming erratic in execution, there were a few excellent Felix cartoons in 1928 and this is one of them.
