Once a blockbuster staple, the power ballad was the ultimate movie accompaniment. We look back at some of the classics...
For a glorious period from the mid-80s throughout the 90s, the biggest summer blockbusters were only worth their salt if they had an equally gargantuan song at the head their soundtrack. Often the success of one was inexorably linked to the other, with the likes of Four Weddings And A Funeral's feats matched and even exceeded by Wet Wet Wet's accompanying Love Is All Around.
The greatest and most successful songs belong to the power ballad genre, and are as emotionally charged and forceful as the gods of epic balladry such as Journey, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and Meat Loaf. As the 90s became the 00s and the charts became increasingly irrelevant, the movie ballad became almost defunct, with even the song-dominant film soundtrack being...

It's Girls Gone Wild this month at The Film Experience. To coincide with the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, here's Chris on von Trier's wild women from Cannes past.
We miss you, Lars!
It's been five years since reigning Cannes bad boy Lars von Trier debuted a film at the festival - practically eons by the festival's standards for their many favorite auteurs. But he lost their favor for his glib Hitler comments during Melancholia's Croisette visit. The resulting Persona Non Grata Status has left us too long without a Cannes Von Trier (Anti)Heroine. Some call him a misogynist, but the provocateur has consistently given us fully-faceted women fighting against circumstance however they must. Let's take a look at their bad behavior:

Norma Bengell controversies (photo: Norma Bengell in Walter Hugo Khouri’s ‘Eros’) (See previous post: “Dead at 78: Norma Bengell, First Actress to Go Full Frontal in Mainstream Films.”) Norma Bengell found herself embroiled in numerous controversies throughout her life. For instance, besides her not infrequently "scandalous" anti-establishment screen roles of the ’60s and ’70s, she took to the streets to protest against both censorship in the arts and Brazil’s military dictatorship. At the 1985 edition of Rio de Janeiro’s Fest Rio, Bengell got into a verbal match with American actress and fellow jury member Ellen Burstyn (Oscar winner for Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore) following alleged improprieties at the festival’s awards ceremony and Bengell’s role in the jury. Presumably to justify her worth as a jury member, the native Portuguese-speaker Bengell bellowed in Spanish: "I am a great actress!" Norma Bengell: Controversial filmmaker In later years,...

Back in the '80s and '90s, it wasn't uncommon to see a tune lifted from a popular movie soundtrack become a colossal hit and spend many glorious weeks atop the singles charts. Whitney Houston did it, Celine Dion did it. Heck, even Bryan Adams managed it thanks to his link with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves!
For reasons unknown to us, this phenomenon doesn't seem to happen anymore. This hasn't stopped some fairly prominent contemporary artists from trying, though. Britney Spears has a song on The Smurfs 2, Jessie J is doing Kick-Ass 2 and Lana Del Rey crooned all over The Great Gatsby.
Digital Spy has shuffled through our movie soundtrack playlist to revisit some of the big tunes, and see who stands up and who falls down years on.

Lady Antebellum, "Golden" (Emi Nashville)
After pulling out the stops with the heavily orchestrated grandeur of 2011's platinum-selling album "Own The Night," Lady Antebellum heads in the opposite direction with the stripped-down sound of "Golden."
The country vocal trio hinted at its new direction with the sparse, soul-strutting groove of "Downtown," one of the spring's most engaging country hits. As usual, Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood deal with the complexities of modern relationships – in this case, a woman asking why her man doesn't take her out for a fun night on the town, like he once did.
The bare-bones arrangements also work well on the emotionally moving "It Ain't Pretty," about a woman living out her heartbreak in public, and on the roots-rocking "Better Off Now (That You're Gone)," which is reminiscent of classic Tom Petty.
The album occasionally recalls past successes: "Long Teenage Goodbye" has the sunny...

There are many films/roles that have, by virtue of the convoluted happenstance of Hollywood history, become institutions of the film world, but perhaps none of them are such odd creatures in themselves as Anna Karenina. Garbo brought Anna to the forefront in 1935, and that was already a remake of her own role, when in 1927 we decided to call the thing Love. Vivien Leigh gave it her spin in 1948, which added some weight to the cultural mountain, and there have been well over a score of efforts (depending on how “legitimate” something needs to be to count – or from what country) at bringing the haunting Russian to life besides.
The reason Anna Karenina stands out as such an odd creature, with respect to her/its place in the film world, is that the real story is beyond the scope of what movies dare to convey, and this was never more...

It’s not often that we get a guest-star centric episode on Supernatural. It’s a pity that it took until the middle of season 3 for us to finally get some insight into Bobby’s history (Bobby....*sob*). And it took a while for us to get a Castiel-centric episode as well. This year, the writers are remaking the rules because this was only Benny’s second episode and we’ve already gotten his backstory. That’s a good thing. It’s refreshing, sometimes, to realize that the characters who exist in the Supernatural universe don’t only revolve around Sam and Dean. Obviously the Winchesters are their focal point, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have their own personalities and stories to tell. One of the amazing things this show has always done was expand the series beyond the brothers. Sure, I want this to be the Sam and Dean show,...

We've already kicked you five rather surprising things you need to know about Paul W.S. Anderson's 3-D take on "The Three Musketeers," strange things like how Orlando Bloom based his flamboyant character on Ziggy Stardust and that Milla Jovovich's breasts are method actors.
If such kooky facts aren't enough to convince you to check out the flick this weekend, then knowing this take on the classic Alexandre Dumas story contains quite a few other surprises might. While you get fair maidens in corsets and sword fights galore, Anderson introduces a whole lot of contemporary bling into the mix: steampunk airships, excellent 3-D effects and more. So here are five reasons to see "The Three Musketeers."

While it has a distinct lack of music by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and/or Sting (aka "The Three Musketeers of Soft Rock"), the new trailer for The Three Musketeers still winds up looking pretty rad. It's definitely a more steampunky approach to the franchise than we've seen before, but luckily appears to be clinging to the good parts of steampunk (basically just airships), while ignoring the less intriguing parts of the genre (annoying broads in goggles, Apple products with gears glued to them, top hats, etc.).
The film was directed by "Thinking Man's Uwe Boll" Paul W.S. Anderson, with a cast including Rome's Ray Stevenson, Inglourious Basterds' Christoph Waltz, Orlando Bloom and Milla Jovovich, among others. Check out the trailer below and let us know if you think it would work with "All for Love" playing in the background (it totally would).

One of our most anticipated announcements regarding Peter Jackson's two Hobbit movies was who would be selected to voice the villainous dragon Smaug. The main heel of the story, Smaug is typically portrayed as far more intelligent than your garden variety rampaging fire-breathing lizard, and will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch in both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
In addition to having the most absurdly British name we've ever had the "pleasure" of hearing, Cumberbatch portrays Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock. Unfortunately we haven't seen it yet though because we have a rule about watching no more than one British-directed Sherlock Holmes adaptation every five years, and Guy Ritchie beat everybody to the punch this time around. Fun Fact: Cumberbatch will also be voicing Necromancer, another character in The Hobbit.
A scene from Sherlock...or Doctor Who. All skinny British...

Two adaptations of Alexandre Dumas' 17th-century adventure tale "The Three Musketeers" are racing toward the big screen, but only one will be presented in 3-D. And as MTV News has learned, that version — directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich, Logan Lerman, Orlando Bloom and Christoph Waltz — will not only be shot in three dimensions but will utilize the camera technology pioneered by James Cameron for "Avatar."
"Shooting in 3-D. We're not converting," star Lerman told us last week during the run up to the MTV Movie Awards. "We're really going to be popping out at you.... We're using the Jim Cameron technology and all that. It's going to be nuts. It's going to look really cool. And trust me, from everything I've seen, it's going to blow people away."

The only thing you may remember about 1993's Three Musketeers was bad Chris O'Donnell hair and the love theme "All for Love" by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting. But block it out.
