A Childrens Film Foundation film.
Rachel Clay's debut.
At the end of the film 'Beauty' boards the SS Uganda (saluted by two somewhat bemused but giggling extras). Built in 1952 at the time of filming the ship was a cruise ship but the SS Uganda went on to have a place in the hearts of many children who for a number of years enjoyed educational cruises on her. In 1982 the SS Uganda was requisitioned as a hospital ship whilst on an educational cruise, having to discharge almost 1000 children in Naples before being quickly refitted for its new role and sailing to the Falklands. It returned to its role in educational cruises, eventually being broken up some time in the 1990's.
Towards the end of the film two police cars are chasing the stolen van. There must have been a shortage of police uniform costumes for hire as two officers are wearing Inspector insignia and it's very unlikely that two such senior officers would be randomly patrolling in two separate police cars. The Metropolitan Police district that covered Hampstead in the 1960s was S Division.
