Most of the inside jokes shown (Bing Crosby's connection with Del Mar racetrack, Dagwood Bumstead's famous sandwich) would have been familiar to cinema audiences of the day, though modern viewers might not get the humor.
Despite being pictured as a celebrity hot-spot, Malibu was still a rural enclave at the time, though itself beach was well known. What would become Malibu Colony was just a collection of little beach shacks frequented at the weekend by busy industry folk and their families. Ranches and horses were common in the surrounding hills and the iconic (now sadly gone) Trancas Cafe hosted its share of real life cowpokes.
The Three Stooges make a quick appearance at the celebrity baseball game. Such contests are still popular in the 21st century.
