Amusing Columbia Color Cartoon
boblipton6 August 2016
When they were not turning out Krazy Kat cartoons for Columbia Pictures, Ben Harrison and Manny Gould tried their hands at the occasional non-series project. This is one of those, concerning itself with a horse race in the rain.

Besides the horses themselves, this one offers the viewer the bread-and-butter of Hollywood cartoon. We get a series of caricatures of movie stars -- this one has a lot of shots of a cartoon Hugh Herbert. All the cartoon studios did this at least occasionally, even Terrytoons, which was based in suburban New York. The cartoon is well paced and the character design and color work is very lush, as was typical for this era, when everyone wanted to produce Disney work except for a few maniacs at Schlesinger's studio.

Even with that in mind, Harrison and company were mostly interested in making a funny cartoon. They have succeeded fairly well with this one.
