February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.
Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. That’s followed by the Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl-starring Firefly Lane on Feb. 3 and Behind Her Eyes on Feb. 17. Perhaps the biggest sleeper this month, however, is Tribes of Europa. This post-apocalyptic adventure series premieres on Feb. 19.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

Netflix, in its latest effort to convince people to keep paying for the service every month, is letting users know what titles will be coming its lineup up to a year in advance.
The company on Monday launched the “New & Popular” tab on TV devices globally, after it had been testing out the feature since this past April. The tab brings together rows customers have long used to find content to watch, now in one place.
The tab includes New on Netflix, Coming Soon, the Top 10 titles (ranked daily per country) — and a new row called “Worth the Wait.”
Worth the Wait will give members a first look at titles coming to Netflix in the next 15 to 365 days. The feature also will let customers set a reminder for shows and films that interest them ahead of time. For now, the Worth the Wait row will be available only on connected-tv devices.

The Clive Barker renaissance is now officially in progress. The latest news is that the long-developing TV series based on the horror/dark fantasy author and filmmaker’s 1990 movie Nightbreed has landed a director — and it’s Michael Dougherty, who helmed last year’s underrated kaiju epic, Godzilla King of the Monsters.
Originally announced back in 2018 for Syfy, the series will presumably focus, like the movie, on Midian, an underground world where outcast creatures and human/monster hybrids attempt to live in peace out of sight of the world above. The original movie was a box office and critical disappointment but has gained a cult following over the years.
Nightbreed was based on Barker’s 1988 novella Cabal and was the author’s second directorial effort after he made Hellraiser in 1987. But the film had a troubled production and the studio, 20th Century Fox, asked Barker to remove nearly an hour...

As SVP of creative at Prescription Songs — the publishing company home to pop singer-songwriters like Doja Cat, Kim Petras and Emily Warren — Sara Walker is used to getting a lot of licensing requests for ad campaigns with the same buzzwords: “upbeat,” “…with a build” and the old standby “swagger.”
So when the Covid-19 pandemic led to nationwide lockdowns in late March and a month of glum, piano-laden commercials, “the word ‘swagger’ certainly disappeared, which was a word you’d see in campaign briefs quite often,” she says. “Those first few weeks during the quarantine were maybe the only time in my almost 20 years of doing this where I didn’t see ‘swagger’ on a daily basis.”

Netflix was ahead of the game for October, releasing its “Netflix and Chills” horror lineup in anticipation of the Halloween season. Now the streaming giant has unveiled its full lineup for October, and believe it or not: horror remains at the forefront of its strategy.
The biggest release this month is undoubtedly The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited followup to terrifying Haunting of Hill House. That arrives on Oct. 9. The film side of things is where most of Netflix’s other horror originals reside, with Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7), A Babysitters’ Guide to Monster Hunting (Oct. 15), and Rebecca (Oct. 22) all making their debut.
Some non-horror originals of note this month include high school drama Grand Army (Oct. 16) and the Anya-Taylor Joy-starring chess story The Queen’s Gambit (Oct. 26). Aaron Sorkin’s latest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, arrives on Oct. 16.

With cinemas closed in much of the world and viewers watching films via streaming platforms, genre filmmakers at this week’s Frontières could be forgiven for primarily looking to Ott services to distribute their projects.
Genre films, of course, have increasingly found a home in recent years on SVODs. Mainstream platforms like Netflix have enjoyed success with the likes of sci-fi thriller “Bird Box,” while specialist platforms like AMC Networks-owned streamer Shudder, which features horror, thriller and supernatural fiction titles, have emerged as significant buyers at festivals and markets.
Yet, despite the inexorable rise of streaming platforms and the struggles of theaters amid Covid-19 cinema shutdowns, many of the producers and directors pitching projects on June 25 at Frontières – the annual Cannes Film Market dedicated to genre film – say they remain keen on a theatrical release alongside streamer distribution.

Happy Death Day was a huge hit for Universal back in 2017, but – ironically, considering the time loop nature of the franchise – history wasn’t repeated twice when 2019’s Happy Death Day 2U failed to rake in as much cash. Because of that, a closer to the trilogy may now be in question. Anyone who’s seen the sequel knows one was intended, though, and star Jessica Rothe isn’t giving up hope that Happy Death Day 3 will arrive eventually. Even if it takes 20 years.
While speaking to Coming Soon, Rothe revealed that she’s still hoping the threequel happens, as writer/director Christopher Landon has got plans ready to roll. The actress is trying to keep a realistic perspective on it, though, as she knows it all depends on whether there’s a desire to make it from studio’s higher-ups.

The upcoming Dark Phoenix is set to round out the rebooted series of X-Men movies that began with 2011’s X-Men: First Class, which was directed by future Kingsman filmmaker Matthew Vaughn. Fc remains one of the most popular entries in the franchise thanks to Vaughn’s typical verve and panache, so it’s a shame that we never got another X-Men film from him. If things had followed his plan, though, we could’ve had a complete trilogy.
While speaking to Coming Soon, the director opened up about why he walked away from the franchise. In short, he planned to do another film in between First Class and Days of Future Past. Apparently, the second one would’ve been centered around the introduction of a younger version of Wolverine. However, once Fox got wind of the time-traveling crossover of Days, that’s all they wanted to make.

It’s strange to think that the casting of Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam was announced back in 2014, almost two years before the Dceu had even released its second entry. Cut the present day, when the comic book universe is seven movies strong, and we’re still waiting to see The Rock portray the popular supervillain. But until the Fast and Furious star finally takes the character in front of cameras, we have this new fan poster from BossLogic, which lets us imagine how Johnson might look as Teth-Adam.
“I said it first,” reads the tagline of the recently shared artwork, presumably in reference to the fact that Adam had the powers of Shazam long before Billy Batson did. As he holds up a defeated-looking Superman, Adam stares out from the darkness of his hood, while the text at the bottom simply reads, “Coming Soon.”

Pretty much every assassin in New York will be coming after Keanu Reeves in next year’s John Wick 3: Parabellum, so perhaps it was inevitable that this highly anticipated sequel wouldn’t find screen time for all the familiar faces from the character’s previous outings.

The recent X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer was a sign that things were starting to come together for the upcoming superhero flick. But as is often the case with this troubled production, it was one step forward and three steps back as it was shortly thereafter announced that the film’s release had been once again delayed, with the date pushed from February 14th next year to June 7th.
While you could take this as a bad omen, director Simon Kinberg views the delay as an opportunity to ensure that this X-Men sequel is up to the highest possible standard, while also increasing the movie’s chances in the China market. Speaking to Collider, the long-time X-Men writer and producer offered a whole list of reasons for pushing the release back to the date once held by Gambit.

Ten years. It’s been 10 years since Christopher Nolan erased the stigma that comic book movies are strictly for kids with the release of The Dark Knight. His nuanced Batman crime drama – which also served as a subliminal tribute to Michael Mann’s Heat – defied all expectations as it became the new standard bearer for superhero affairs. Plus, it helped that it was a bloody good movie, regardless of its genre or assumed target audience.
Gary Oldman, who portrayed Jim Gordon, told Coming Soon how The Dark Knight could’ve terribly gone off course if it weren’t for Nolan’s vision and guidance.
“In the hands of a less talented director, I think, you might watch this and think there’s too much going on. It’s overloaded. Lots of plot. Two bad guys. There’s the Chechnyans, the mob, the Lao, the money, The Joker – who doesn’t...

Though 2019 will certainly boast its share of superhero movies, I must confess that one of the films I’m looking forward to most is that of John Wick: Chapter 3. Well, at least that’s what we’d been calling it up until today.

This week, Netflix revealed a new upcoming original series, and it might just have you quivering in your stilettos. According to the trailer's official description, Super Drags tells of three drag-tastic superheroes who "tighten up their corsets and transform into the baddest Super Drags in town, ready to combat shade and rescue the world's glitter from the evil villains." We're getting some Powerpuff Girls and Sailor Moon vibes, for sure. Netflix has yet to drop any additional information (we only have a "Coming Soon" at the moment as opposed to a release date), but you can bet we'll keep you posted, honey. In the meantime, let's all cross our fingers for an inevitable RuPaul cameo.

13 Reasons Why took the world by storm when it hit Netflix last year, and it is safe to say it connected with people on a deep level. As many shows tread lightly on heavy subject matters, this teen drama (which is based on a book of the same title) truly shines light on devastating topics and experiences teenagers are faced with. This leads us to the question... Is 13 Reasons Why a true story? Although author Jay Asher's story is not a true story, the situations that occur are all based off of real-life situations that have happened to him or people around him. "All of the reasons Hannah describes were based, at least loosely, on situations I’d either experienced or heard about, mostly from my wife or close female friends," the author said in an interview with Coming Soon. Is Hannah Baker a real person? Despite the fact...

Next week, Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story will finally be released in theaters. While the arrival of a new film set in that galaxy far, far away is normally a cause for excitement, many people are skeptical of this Han-centric pic. Today, though, Lucasfilm hopes to put fans’ doubts to rest, as a new critics TV spot for Solo has been unveiled, and it has nothing but positive things to say about the movie.
Set against previously-seen footage, the promo wastes no time lauding the flick’s quality. With large, white text, it’s revealed that io9 thinks Solo is “incredibly fun,” packed with “huge action,” and filled with “big surprises,” while Entertainment Tonight is quoted next, saying the latest Anthology film is a “fun and bold adventure.” It all concludes with a rather on-the-nose statement from Coming Soon, who claim that “You’re going to want...

You would think that Simon Pegg was just going around solely to speak about “Star Trek.” Even though Pegg is out there promoting his new film, “Terminal,” starring himself and Margot Robbie, it seems like all anyone wants to do is talk about “Star Trek.” In a new interview with Coming Soon, Pegg is again asked about ‘Trek,’ and sheds some more light on what we might expect from director Quentin Tarantino’s take on the franchise.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to get even bigger in a few years’ time as, once the Disney-Fox merger is completed, Marvel Studios will at last have the rights to the entirety of the X-Men universe and the Fantastic Four. It’s a matter of the utmost interest for fans, then, how the studio will go about folding mutantkind into the established history of the McU, so any official word on the subject is highly scrutinized.
With that in mind, get ready to start analyzing, as Marvel chief Kevin Feige has given a fresh response on the subject while in conversation with Coming Soon. First off, the producer revealed that discussions currently aren’t happening in “any way, shape or form,” but he did say that he believes they’ll be able to handle the challenge of introducing mutants into the franchise, as they’ve been tying the various...

Director Francis Lawrence has been chatting about his planned Battlestar Galactica movie...
Pretty much as long as this site has been going, there’s been talk of a big screen outing for Battlestar Galactica. At one stage, it was a project on the docket of director Bryan Singer. Yet back in 2016, Francis Lawrence – director of the incoming Red Sparrow, and the last three The Hunger Games movies – was hired for the project.
What, then, is the status of the film? “I’m working on that, that’s something I’m developing”, Lawrence has confirmed in a new interview with Coming Soon.
“I’m working on that with Lisa Joy, who is one of the creators of Westworld. The original series was actually one of the first sets that I ever went on… I loved that show as a kid. I loved the Ron Moore show too”.
